Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Cell Signaling. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. [edit] Title

WikiProject on Cell Signaling

[edit] Scope

This project is dedicated to improving and organising the Wikipedia articles on cell signaling to provide a convenient and reliable reference of the known signal transduction pathways. It covers the pathway pages and individual protein pages related to them.

[edit] Goals

  • Creating comprehensive articles for each known cell signaling pathway
  • Organising cell signaling articles with navigation boxes like these: Wikipedia:WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology#Protein topics navigation boxes.
  • Organising and creating articles on notable proteins involved in signaling pathways.
  • Providing each pathway with a clear diagram of its structure.
  • Clearly citing sources, especially for active research topics

[edit] Target audience

  • Introduction to pathway articles should make minimal use of jargon and be kept relatively simple
  • Subsections and protein pages can be more technical

[edit] Parentage

This is a daughter project of WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology

[edit] Open Tasks

To-do list for Wikipedia:WikiProject Cell Signaling:

Here are some tasks you can do:
  • Requests:
Recruit people from MolBiol projects and people who list signaling as an interest on their User pages. (See Recruitment on the Talk Page).
Design a convention for drawing pathway diagrams. (See Cell Signaling Diagrams on the Talk Page).
Build a sample pathway article: Hedgehog signaling pathway
Resolve the Cell signaling/Signal transduction merger, no merge
Come to a consensus regarding cell signaling article style. (See Article Structure on the Talk Page).
Templates (See Templates on the Talk Page).
Create a Talk template for use on Talk Pages. (See Project Banner on the Talk Page).
Figure out why this task template isn't working quite as nicely as it should.
Create a userbox for this WikiProject.
    Create more signaling templates.
Create more navboxes. (See Wikipedia:Navigational templates)
Find existing navboxes and add to the Template section.
Categories (See Categories on the Talk Page).
Propose Category Merge: Category:Signal Transduction and Category:Cell Signaling
Wait for discussion/consensus on category merge.
    Assess and label/categorise Category:Unassessed_Cell_signaling_articles
  • Wikify:
WikiProject banner. Add the WikiProject banner using {{Template:Cell Signaling Project}} to the Talk Page of all applicable articles. This will help with recruiting volunteers as well as categorising articles for easy reference. (See Project Banner on the Talk Page).
Add Infoboxes or navboxes where appropriate.
    Wikify internal links (wiki-links)
Improve articles by creating lead paragraphs and/or section headings.
If you do not have time to wikify, you can still assist by tagging an article for Wikification. To do this, add {{wikify}} to the top of the article.
  • Merge:
Merge Articles: Cell Signaling Networks and Cell Signaling.
  • Verify:
Mark articles that need verification by using {{fact}}, {{Unreferencedsection}}, {{refimprove}}, {{unreferenced}}.
  • Cleanup:
    Mark articles for cleanup using {{cleanup}}
  • Stubs:
    Propose a new stub: {{cell-signaling-stub}}.
Wait for approval of new {{cell-signaling-stub}} (Discussion this stub proposal here. Also - anyone got a nice picture we could use for this stub?)
Add {{signaltransduction-stub}} notices to all stubby articles.
Make sure main article of all Category:Stub-Class_Cell_signaling_articles have {{signaltransduction-stub}}. It may seem redundant to have a stub template on the main page when the project banner also lists the article as a stub, but some people into de-stubbing don't look at project pages or talk pages - just main article pages to get a list of stubs they can work on. The more ways to recruit people to help, the better.
    Expand {{signaltransduction-stub}} articles.

[edit] Article Structure

Proposed structure of a pathway article:

  • General introduction - keep it simple and clear
  • History/Discovery - discovery, seminal papers
  • Mechanism - the proteins involved and how they interact.
  • Role - the role of the pathway
  • Human disease - alternatively this can be incorporated into the previous section
  • Current research - recent advances, future directions

For individual proteins, see suggestions in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Molecular_and_Cellular_Biology#Structures

Proposed scheme for pathway diagrams is described here. Please do comment and contribute.

No classification of this project has been defined.

[edit] Projects

Cell signaling and signal transduction is a very broad field. This section breaks this WikiProject down into smaller, more manageable "mini" projects, with a more specific subject set. Please feel free to add a mini project according to your expertise, or jump in and help on a specific mini project.

  • Tyrosine kinase signaling.

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
