This page should not be confused with requests for checkuser or documentation about the renaming of pages.

This page is a forum in which users can request, and bureaucrats can consider and carry out, username changes. It is usually only possible to rename an account to a name which is not yet taken. Renaming is carried out in accordance with the username policy.

[edit] Instructions

  • First, take a look at the username policy to make sure the username you are requesting is appropriate. Also, please note that for technical reasons, your username cannot begin with a lowercase letter, nor can it contain any underscores.
  • Check to make sure the username you are requesting is not already taken. Do this by searching for the name in this list. If the name appears in the list, even if the link is red, it is taken. Do not create an account under the new name. We'll do that for you.
  • Log in to your present username in order to place your request.
  • Click here to place a request.
    • Replace the text "CURRENT" with your present username.
    • Replace "NEW" with the username to which you wish to be renamed.
    • Fill in a reason where indicated but do not add anything in the "subject/headline" box.
If that doesn't work, simply copy the following text to your computer's 'clipboard':
{{subst:Renameuser|CURRENT|NEW|3=Reason for requested renaming.}} ~~~~
Go to the "Requests" section of this page, click the "edit" link, and paste the text at the very bottom. Modify it as indicated above.
  • Make sure that you have spelled both names correctly. Save the page.
  • Check back periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Do not be surprised if you suddenly cannot log in to your old account; this merely indicates that you should log in under your new name as the request has been fulfilled.
  • Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed.

Effects of a username change
  • When the rename has been completed, your account will have been renamed, and any contributions you have made (including deleted contributions) will be reattributed to your new account as a background process. Your account preferences, watchlist contents, password, etc. will all be preserved, and your user and user talk pages will have been moved to the new name.
Note: The process responsible for reallocating old contributions is currently dependent upon the job queue mechanism. As such, you may find old contributions do not immediately appear under your new account; this is perfectly normal. Updates should take at most a day to complete, although the length of time will vary according to the size of the job queue on this wiki, and the status of the server processes which process this queue.
  • The change will appear in the user rename log and the request will be moved to the archives in the interest of transparency. It is not possible to rename accounts without an entry being created in the log.
  • This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.
  • Be aware: Once you have been renamed, your old account will no longer exist and may potentially be recreated by a third party. This is true even if your old account pages have been redirected towards your new account. To guard against impersonation, you may wish to recreate the old account yourself.

[edit] Notes

  • It is not possible for bureaucrats to merge two accounts, or to reattribute edits from IP addresses. Only registered accounts can be renamed.
  • This page is for requests on the English Wikipedia only. To change your username on another Wikimedia project, please ask a bureaucrat on that project or make a request on Meta.
  • As an alternative, please consider changing your signature. This will change your "public appearance" on talk pages and other places where you sign your username with ~~~~.
  • If you have not made very many edits, it may be easier for you simply to create a new account. You can then discontinue use of the old one. It does not need to be deleted; disused accounts are harmless and may be safely ignored. This will save you the trouble of submitting a request and waiting around for it to be fulfilled.
  • Account names requested here are regarded as being "reserved" until the request is accepted or rejected. If someone else registers the account while the request is here, it will be renamed if necessary to allow for the requested move.
  • Usernames cannot start with a lowercase letter or contain underscores; the first letter will be automatically capitalized and underscores replaced with spaces. However, you can change your signature to say whatever you like, within reason of course.
  • Of possible interest: the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy; "Right to vanish".

Several users provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help please read the linked page carefully.

[edit] Current requests

Add new requests to the bottom of the page.

[edit] Thomassampson → ThomasSampson

On hold - Your account is already unified across Wikimedia projects, so you will need to ask a steward to delete your global account before you can be renamed locally. Requests can be made at m:SR/SUL. WjBscribe 10:15, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] User:Elviajeropaisa → User:Albeiror24

  • SoxBot VI has analyzed this request, and renaming appears to be possible. SoxBot VI (talk) 13:33, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Please have a steward delete your global account so we can perform this rename. Andre (talk) 13:54, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] A4 → A1

  • SoxBot VI has analyzed this request, and a problem(s) was found. Requested username already exists, not eligible for renaming. SoxBot VI (talk) 18:24, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
On hold Are you A1 on the Ukranian wiki? If so, as your account is already unified across Wikimedia projects, so you will need to ask a steward to delete your global account before you can be renamed locally. Requests can be made at m:SR/SUL. WjBscribe 18:19, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I am uk:User:A1. I don't want my global account be deleted, I just wanted to merge my existing on enwiki accounts - User:A4, which I registered locally on en quite long ago and User:A1 - wich is global into one account - A1. --A1 (talk) 19:02, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
It is not possible to rename accounts to a name reserved for a global account. To do this you need to have the global account deleted, then I can rename you, then you can recreate the account. WjBscribe 19:13, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Shownearby → ShowNearby

Clerk note: Moved from USURP. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 19:22, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Delete your global account at m:SR/SUL first. Andre (talk) 00:33, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fearlith → Kris_Haamer

  • SoxBot VI has analyzed this request, and renaming appears to be possible. SoxBot VI (talk) 16:30, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Clerk note: You have two names stated (Krishaamer & Krish Haamer) which do you wish to be renamed to? Rudget (Help?) 16:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Clerk note: You appear to have a unified account and will have to request that it be deleted before a name change request can be fulfilled. Requests can be made at m:SR/SUL. Shereth 17:02, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
N Not done - Cannot rename user Fearlith locally as this username has been migrated to the unified login system. You will need to get a steward to delete your global account before this change can be made. You make that request here. Kingturtle (talk) 17:30, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
My real name is Kris Haamer so the user would be Kris_Haamer. I have requested the SUL delete. Thanks, --Kris Haamer (talk) 08:45, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Amcormack → Uccmin

N Not done - Cannot rename user Amcormack locally as this username has been migrated to the unified login system. You will need to get a steward to delete your global account before this change can be made. You make that request here. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:52, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
I can do this for you, Amcormack. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 21:50, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] BJinsect → InsectBot

Clerk note: The typical process for getting bots approved is to maintain one account for the operator and one for the bot itself. Since your edits under your current name consist only of creating the bot approval request, filing this request to change your username, and starting a user and talk page, you have the option of simply creating a new account for the bot (ideally using this page while logged in to the account that will run it) without worrying about renaming this one. --jonny-mt 01:43, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
once bot approved i will leave a note for this changing username to reallyget changed, thanks, cheers-BJinsect (talk) 22:12, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
N Not done file a new request when you are ready Andre (talk) 00:32, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Magic Guitar → Jienexfore

  • Current name: Magic Guitar (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Requested name: Jienexfore (SUL conflicts?) (rename user)
  • Reason: I was wanting to do an article on Jienexfore. I thought (wrongly I guess) that I could use any user name and then write the article. That's the reason for a name change request Magic Guitar (talk) 16:02, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Clerk note: The change name request is the user's only edit so simply creating the new account would be preferable - however I'm not certain using the new name would make sense given the reason. Will discuss on the user's talk page. Shereth 16:12, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

N Not done -- Andre (talk) 00:31, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RubenCharles → Ruben_Charles

N Not done - Cannot rename user locally as this username has been migrated to the unified login system. You will need to get a steward to delete your global account before this change can be made. You make that request here. Kingturtle (talk) 18:16, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ikco-webmaster → internetikco

N Not done, username does not exist Andre (talk) 00:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pradiptripathy → Pradip Tripathy

N Not done, you need to delete your global account first Andre (talk) 00:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tottidesign → Totti Design

Clerk note: The above three requests have been moved from WP:USURP as the usernames have not been registered. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 19:18, June 11, 2008 (UTC)
This is a promotional username. Please choose another one. Andre (talk) 00:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
N Not done. WjBscribe 17:27, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pugilistlee → Kristopher A. Lee

Pugilistlee (talk) 01:42, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

N Not done - Cannot rename user Pugilistlee locally as this username has been migrated to the unified login system. You will need to get a steward to delete your global account before this change can be made. You make that request here. Kingturtle (talk) 11:39, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lijojames → Lijo

N Not done The name Lijo (talk · contribs) is already taken. As the account has no edits, it can be usurped; to do so, place a request at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. Kingturtle (talk) 11:38, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Richardw nl → Richardw

  • Current name: Richardw nl (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Requested name: Richardw (SUL conflicts?) (rename user)
  • Reason: This is the username I use on serveral other Wikimedia projects. I could not choose this username when registering on enwiki but it seems it has never been used by anyone. Richard 08:47, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
N Not done The name Richardw (talk · contribs) is already taken. As the account has no edits, it can be usurped; to do so, place a request at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. Kingturtle (talk) 11:36, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Karin sanders → AAEON

N Not done Not only are role accounts not allowed, but being naming after a company is a violation of our username policy. Furthermore, your edits make your intentions perfectly clear; Wikipedia is about building an encyclopedia, not promoting your company. Goodbye. EVula // talk // // 13:12, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pbarsamian99 → armeniankid09

I decided my current username doesn't reflect my identity the way I would like it to.

Thank you for considering this change.

N Not done You've only made three edits, one of them being this request, and none of them are to the actual encyclopedia portion of Wikipedia. You can just register another account. EVula // talk // // 17:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] SU2C → Cat from SU2C

Bureaucrat note: The company name is still in the name... I'd rather you request something unique that doesn't reference Stand Up To Cancer at all. I'd also recommend you read our conflict of interest guidelines. EVula // talk // // 18:17, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Greenmonstah927 → GREENMONSTAH927

  • Current name: Greenmonstah927 (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Requested name: GREENMONSTAH927 (SUL conflicts?) (rename user)
  • Reason: I would like it to be in capital letters. Supposedly, there is a way to do this with AIM, but I am not able to do it. Thanks in advance for any help! Imeagleeye (talk) 21:22, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Bureaucrat note: do you mean to change Imeagleeye to GREENMONSTAH927? User:Greenmonstah927 does not exist. Kingturtle (talk) 21:28, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
I think he thinks that this is to get his name on AIM changed, which we don't do. CWii(Talk|Contribs) 21:31, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
N Not done You don't have any edits aside from this (rather confusing) request. Just register a new account. EVula // talk // // 21:35, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wingedunicorn123 → Lanoria

Please delete your global account at m:SR/SUL first. Andre (talk) 01:48, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RR' → RR

Y Done EVula // talk // // 13:20, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sam Bellamy → Daniel Cull

Y Done, however please note that "expertise" has no bearing outside of how you conduct yourself. Editors aren't judged by their off-line educations, as it's very difficult to prove any such claims. EVula // talk // // 14:31, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Keving morgan studio → Kevin Morgan Studio

Kevin morgan studio (talk) 15:43, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Clerk note: The username appears to be promotional. Use of a company name as a username is prohibited by the username policy. Please choose another name. Section was amended here. Rudget (Help?) 15:48, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
N Not done Self-promotion is not what Wikipedia is for. EVula // talk // // 15:49, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Bureaucrat note: Client? Someone's paying for someone else to do a WP:CHU? Kingturtle (talk) 16:38, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
