California's 2nd congressional district is very large geographically, containing much of the far north of the state of California, north of Sacramento. The district covers all of Colusa, Glenn, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, and Yuba Counties, and parts of Butte and Yolo Counties. The current Representative for this district is Republican Wally Herger, who has represented the district since 1987.
[edit] Voting
George W. Bush received 62% of the vote in this district in 2004; John Kerry received 37%.[1] The district voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger 71-24% in 2006,[2] Richard Mountjoy 52-42% in 2006,[3] Bill Jones 56-40% in 2004,[4] recalling Gray Davis 70.5-29.5%[5] and Schwarzenegger 58-19%[6] in 2003, and Bill Simon 58-31% in 2002.[7]
[edit] Competitiveness
This sprawling seat covers almost all of interior northern California with the main cities in the district being Redding and the college town of Chico. Other than some Democratic-leaning areas of Chico, the GOP holds exclusive sway in this Sacramento Valley seat.
