California's 48th congressional district is located in Orange County in southern California, and includes the cities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest (formerly known as El Toro), Tustin, and parts of Newport Beach, San Juan Capistrano. Republican John Campbell has represented the district in the U.S. House of Representatives since the special election of December 7, 2005. He replaced Chris Cox who had resigned on August 2, 2005 to become chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

George W. Bush received 58% of the vote in this district in 2004; John Kerry received 40%.[1] The district voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger 72-24% in 2006,[2] Dick Mountjoy 50-46% in 2006,[3] Bill Jones 51-44% in 2004,[4] recalling Gray Davis 73-27%[5] and Schwarzenegger 65-16%[6] in 2003, and Bill Simon 59-33% in 2002.[7]
