California's 5th congressional district currently covers Sacramento, California and the surrounding area, is currently represented by Democrat Doris Matsui.

John Kerry received 61% of the vote in this district in 2004; George W. Bush received 38%.[1] The district voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger 50-44% in 2006,[2] Dianne Feinstein 67-27% in 2006,[3] Barbara Boxer 65-31% in 2004,[4] keeping Gray Davis 50.4-49.6%[5] and Schwarzenegger 43-36%[6] in 2003, and for Davis 50-35% in 2002.[7]

Incumbent Robert Matsui died January 1, 2005. In a special election held on March 8, 2005 to fill the vacancy, Matsui's widow, Doris, won the seat with more than 68% of the vote. She was sworn in on March 10, 2005.
