Schlanders (Silandro) (Italian: Silandro; German: Schlanders; Archaic: Slaranusa, Slanderes) is a comune (municipality) in the province of Bolzano-Bozen in the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located about 70 km northwest of the city of Trento and about 50 km west of the city of Bolzano (de. Bozen). As of 31 December 2006, it had a population of 5,928 and an area of 115 km².[1]
The municipality of Schlanders (Silandro) contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Göflan (Covelano), Kortsch (Corces), Nördersberg (Montetramontana), Sonnenberg (Montemezzodì), and Vetzan (Vezzano).
Schlanders (Silandro) borders the following municipalities: Latsch (Laces), Laas (Lasa), Mals (Malles Venosta), Martell (Martello), Schnals (Senales).
Schlanders (Silandro) is well-known because of its church tower (92 meters), which is also the highest in Bolzano-Bozen. Another attraction is the renovated castle, which now serves as a civic hall (including a public library).
The locality was mentioned for the first time officially on 13 June 1077 in a deed of donation, where the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich IV. handed over the town to Altwin, the Bishop of Brixen.[citation needed]
