Norway debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, and since then has only been absent twice: in 1970, when they boycotted the contest over disagreements about the voting structure, and in 2002, when they did not qualify.
Norway has twice won the contest, in 1985 with Bobbysocks' performance of La det swinge (Let It Swing) and in 1995 with Secret Garden's mainly instrumental, Celtic-influenced ethno-piece Nocturne. (This song forced a rule change due to the comparative lack of lyrics in it.)[citation needed] Despite these successes, the country also holds the unfortunate distinction of having scored the most "nul points" (zero points) in competition history, namely four times. They have also came last ten times, this is also a record.
Until its win in the 1985 Song Contest, Norway struggled to gain recognition from its European fellows, finishing in last place six times. Since then, the country has had mixed results; low placings in the early 1990s were followed by a string of top-ten finishes, peaking with Secret Garden's 1995 win.
Since the introduction of the semi-final round in 2004, Norway's highest placing was in the 2008 contest, by Maria Haukaas Storeng performing with the song Hold On Be Strong, which came in 5th, thus being the best Western European song of the year. The second best placing after the introduction of the semi-final round was in 2005, by glam metal band Wig Wam and their song In My Dreams. The performance, featuring exuberant choreography and costumes, became a crowd favourite and earned the band a top-ten placing, thus automatically qualifying the country for a spot in the final round of the following year's Song Contest.
The Eurovision Song Contest is broadcast in Norway by NRK, which also broadcasts Norway's national selection competition, the Melodi Grand Prix.
