The Republic of Macedonia participates in the Eurovision Song Contest as the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia,[1] often abbreviated to FYR Macedonia.[2]

It débuted at the Eurovision in Eurovision Song Contest 1998. The country first took part in 1996, but did not qualify through to the final. The best result the country reached so far was a 12th place in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 final. The Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro are the only former Yugoslav states to have never finished in the Top 10 at Eurovision.

FYR Macedonia has come through all the semi-finals since 2004, although never reaching higher than 9th place in the semi-final, as well as the entry not among the ten best in the final, leaving them to participate the Semi-Final again next year. This record, however, was broken in 2008, when the FYR Macedonian entry failed to pass through to the final. They were voted as the 10th qualifier by the televote, but the juries chose Sweden to pass.

The pop music festival Skopje Fest was often used as a national preselection. The show, both the national preselection and the international Eurovision Song Contest is always covered by the national Macedonian Radio-Television.

Prior to becoming an independent state, as a part of SFR Yugoslavia, SR Macedonia was taking part in Jugovizija, the Yugoslav national preselection but was the only federal state who has never represented Yugoslavia at Eurovision Song Contest. [1]

But after the Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia, all countries that once were Yugoslavia wanted to enter to Eurovision. Maja Odzaklievska was known to be the candidate for Eurovision Song Contest 1993, with the song Ne Me Dopiraj, however the reason is unknown why the country didn't participate. In Skopje Fest 1995 Karolina Gočeva took part with the song 'Me sakas'. She won the jury vote, but lost out on the Grand Prix to Lidija Kochovska. There was a lot of discussion over who MKRTV would send, however the entry Me sakas sung by Karolina Gočeva was withdrawn. 1996 was the first time that the contest would be used as the country's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Karolina took part at the age of 15 with the song 'Ma ajde kazi mi' (Come on, tell me), and although her final placement is not known, it is known that she won the prize for 'Best Interpretation' from the jury. The winner was Kaliopi with the song 'Samo ti' (Only You). The song took part in the preselection for Oslo, but only came 29th, and therefore did not compete at Eurovision.
