Because Belgium is a nation where both Dutch and French are spoken, Belgium alternates the languages of its entries each year. Even nowadays the French-speaking (RTBF) and Dutch-speaking television (VRT) stations take turns to choose the entry. In 2007, the French-speaking part was responsible for their entry, although the chosen song was sung in English.

In 2003, Belgium was represented by Urban Trad, a band who sang in an invented language and they finished second. Belgium's 2008 entry is also in an imaginary language. In 2005, Belgium was represented by a Portuguese singer who sang in French. In both 2004 and 2006, Belgian entrants were considered favourites to win [1] but both Xandee and Kate Ryan fared badly on the night. The only ever Belgian victory was from Sandra Kim in 1986, also the youngest ever Eurovision winner, she was thirteen years old at the time.

Because of an extremely low score in 1993, Belgium was not allowed to participate in the 1994 contest. The same happened in 1997 and again in 2001.
