Morocco has only participated in the Eurovision Song Contest once, in 1980 when Israel did not participate in the contest. After a poor result, Hassan II of Morocco vowed that the country would never return to the contest[citation needed]. Although not geographically in Europe, Morocco is eligible to enter the contest as a member of the European Broadcasting Union.
