Cyprus made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981. Cyprus' best result, fifth place, has been achieved on three occasions: in 1982 with Anna Vissi, 1997 with Chara & Andreas Constantinou, and 2004 with Lisa Andreas.
Since its first entry, Cyprus has participated every year except 1988 and 2001. In 1988, Cyprus withdrew its entry after broadcaster CyBC determined that the intended entry was ineligible; the song had been entered (but not selected) in the 1984 national selection process, which was a violation of the Cypriot selection rules. In 2001, the country did not qualify for the contest due to insufficiently high average scores in previous contests, according to the qualification process at the time.
Most of the Cypriot entries have been sung in Greek or English; the exceptions are in 2000, in which the song Nomiza included both Greek and Italian, and in the 2007 contest, in which Evridiki performed "Comme Ci, Comme Ça" in French. Although Turkish is one of the official languages of the country, no Turkish lyrics have ever been used in a Cypriot Eurovision entry.

[edit] Voting
Cyprus is famous for always exchanging 12 points to Greece in the Semi Final and Final, and Greece is also well known for reciprocating. In the past years, there were rare occasions that Greece or Cyprus were giving to each others less than 12 (usually 10). There were occasions that Greece or Cyprus gave to each other even 6 points. Last time that Cyprus gave less than 12 points was in 1996, when Cyprus gave to Greece 10 points and last time that Greece gave to Cyprus less than 12 was in 1995 when that country gave Cyprus 8. Since 1998, when televoting took place in Eurovision, the two countries exchange always 12 points permanently.
It can be noted that Cyprus and Turkey, another participant, never voted each other until 2003, due to the political issue because of Cyprus Problem for the reasons that since 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupies since then 37% of the island illegally. Turkey does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus. In 2003, Cyprus made a big step by giving 8 points to Turkey through televoting, which contributed to Turkey's first victory in the competition. The following year, the contest was in Istanbul and both Cyprus and Turkey exchanged votes for the first time.
