AfD footer

This section describes how to list for deletion articles and their associated talk pages. See the related pages for templates, categories, redirects, stub types, pages in the Wikipedia namespace, user pages, or images and other media, or use copyright violation where applicable. As well, note that deletion may not be needed for problems such as pages written in foreign languages, duplicate pages, and other cases.

Note: Users must be logged in to complete steps II and III.

To list a single article for deletion for the first time, follow this three-step process:

I.
Put the deletion tag on the article.

Insert the tag at the top of the article if it's the article's first AfD nomination, if the article has been nominated for deletion before use instead.

  • Please do not mark the edit as minor.
  • Please include in the edit summary the phrase
    AfD: Nominated for deletion; see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
  • You can check the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. This allows you to notice if the AfD tag is removed by a vandal or a new user unfamiliar with deletion policy.
  • Save the page.
II.
Create the article's deletion discussion page.

The resulting AfD box at the top of the article should contain a link to "Preloaded debate" in the AfD page.

  • Click that link to open the article's deletion discussion page. Some preloaded text and some instructions will appear.
  • Give a reason for the deletion and a category for the debate (instructions will be on the page).

OR

  • Click the link saying "this article's entry" to open the deletion-debate page.
  • Insert this text:
     ~~~~
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion, Category with a letter indicating the category of the debate, and Reason... with the reasons you think the page should be deleted.
If you used template  instead of , use "PageName (2nd nomination)" instead of "PageName" for a second nomination, etc.).
  • Consider adding an appropriate deletion sorting template to the nomination.
  • Consider checking "Watch this page" to follow the progress of the debate.
  • Please use an edit summary such as
    Creating deletion discussion page for PageName
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
  • Save the page.
III.
Notify users who monitor AfD discussion.
Open the articles for deletion log page. At the top of the list on the log page (there's a comment indicating the spot), insert:
replacing PageName appropriately.
  • Include the discussion page's name in your edit summary like
    Adding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName
    replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
If you used template  instead of , use "PageName (2nd nomination)" instead of "PageName" for a second nomination, etc.).
  • Save the page. Your insertion will be automatically expanded to the same form as the preceding lines in the file: .
To list multiple related pages for deletion see this page.
Once listed, deletion discussions can, optionally, also be transcluded into an appropriate deletion sorting category, such as the ones for actors, music, academics, or for specific countries; which helps attract people familiar with a particular topic area. Please see the list of categories.
ReportVandal
I.
Warn User
  Before adding a vandal here be sure the user has been warned.
On the user's talk page, warn that his/her behavior is not appropriate and is considered vandalism. Use the appropriate warning template, adding 'subst:' before each. For example, instead of using test, use . This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Wait to see if the vandalism continues. Only add users to the list who continue to vandalize after being warned.
However, users known to be vandals (those who vandalize the same article with similar material, for instance) may be reported immediately.
II.
Determine Severity
  Determine the severity of the vandalism:
Severe: Hateful; critical subtle edits (such as changing dates); stating lies; redirects; etc.
Moderate: High-profile (such as article blanking); spam linking; disruptive; etc.
Low: "Stupid" edits (such as adding the word "penis" to every sentence); non-critical subtle edits; etc.
III.
Add Vandal
  Using the edit button next to the appropriate section, add the vandal at the top of the list.
Enter the following text:
IP or username of vandal ~~~~
If the vandal has a username with spaces in it, instead use:
Username with spaces ~~~~
If the vandal is operating under an anonymous IP address, report under IP Addresses. If the vandal is a logged-in user, report under Registered users. Include a brief description of the nature of the vandalism. Use the vandal account name or IP address as your edit summary.
IV.
Monitor Vandal
  Determine that the vandal has been warned on his or her talk page. If vandalism persists after five minutes:
Determine if the vandal has been blocked by visiting Special:Ipblocklist.
If the vandal was blocked, but vandalism persists, file a new report under Possible sockpuppets.
If the vandal was not blocked, visit WP:AIV and post the report there.
TestTemplates
The template TestTemplates is deprecated. Please use  instead.
These templates should always be used with the subst: keyword, as suggested on Wikipedia:Template substitution. They are shown without subst: here to reduce the space occupied by this large table. For example, type , not test, to warn common first-time vandals.
To coordinate numbers, the previous blanking 2, 3, and 4 templates have been moved because they were out of sync with the numbering usage with other templates. The old templates, though not listed, can still be used as they redirect to the new name and number.
The numbering system being used across the templates is simple:
0. Good faith edit
1. General note
2. Could be seen as vandalism
3. Warning to stop
4. Final warning
5. Blocked
6. Blocked plus severe warning
If you are creating new templates, please follow the numbers above, even if you are not creating templates using all the numbers. That way, by using the right number, users will be able to know automatically what category of message the template refers to.
The template TestTemplates is deprecated. Please use  instead.
USAtags
Looking for the right copyright tag?
See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for a full list of tags available. The following are applicable within the United States.
  • money-US—for images of the official currency of the United States. These are in the public domain. (See also money.)
  • PD-art-US—for images of works of art published in the United States prior to 1923.
  • PD-US-flag—for images of U.S. state, federal district, or insular area flags
  • PD-US—for copyright-expired images in the US (mainly those published pre-1923). Also for works not eligible for copyright under US law. (May be preferable in some cases vs. PD-old for US-originating images.)
  • PD-Pre1978 — for images published in the United States prior to 1978 without explicit notice of "copyright, year, owner" or "©" attached.
  • PD-US-patent—for images from descriptions of US patents. These are in the public domain, though the actual inventions depicted might be encumbered by patents. [2] This does not prevent us from describing them, since we are not trying to construct or sell the inventions.
USA federal government images
Note. There is an upload form for items "from a U.S. federal government source." It is linked from Wikipedia:Upload. If you use one of these tags there don't forget the double curly brackets on each end of the tag!
