- Thanks for your efforts to include me. I read the exchange, but I have no strong opinions yet. I'll be at The Symposium and I'll be interested to hear what the gist of the discussion is on Sunday. I am a very active Wikipedia editor, but I have no bright ideas about organizational issues, and I will need to weigh the discussions before I can form any intelligent opinions. I'll be happy to tell you what I think on Sunday night. If you look at the last meetup page, you'll see my photo. All the best. -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Move
I think I will move back the article about Judeopolonia to this name, since the name League of East European States doesn't appear on any google search outside of Wikipedia, the term Judeopolonia has been adopted (rightly or wrongly) as the widespread name of this concept. While some may feel discomfort at this, Wikipedia is not a place to judge accepted naming, similar situation is in Polish Corridor article which is a propaganda term that describes an area of Polish administrative region with different name, yet the propaganda name has entered widespread usage. Also a proper move should be be made after voting and discussion. The term Judeopolonia is widespread enough that I thin is notable to have an article on wiki.--Molobo (talk) 04:19, 16 January 2008 (UTC) Perhaps a an article about Attempts to create Jewish state in Central and Eastern Europe ? But at beginning they will be similiar to each other.--Molobo (talk) 04:23, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up about this. At the moment interest is a bit low in the PA chapter because of all the delays, so there isn't much to talk about. Hello Pharos,
I am the archivist for the language subcommittee. You sent a message to the language subcommittee on January 29th 2008 about historical languages. Discussion with the subcommittee is regularly copied to a public archive for transparency. Since you have not agreed to archival, your messages are currently replaced with the message "<this user has not agreed to public archival>".
Do you agree to the public archival of all your emails? Even if you do agree, you can mark any email or comment as private and the message will be replaced by an appropriate note to that effect. The archives can be edited at any time to remove a message you forgot to mark as private.

[edit] Wikipedia Signpost article
Thanks for your contribution to the Wikipedia Signpost article. I think it was considerably improved by the changes. There are couple of things that I think needed to be corrected, however:
- "according to Ratzinger's 1991 book Turning point for Europe?"
- The date of the English translation (Turning point for Europe?) was 1994. The date of the Italian edition (Svolta per l'Europa?) was 1992. Since the Wikipedia article cites the Italian edition, I have gone with that.
- "It is their consideration of the date discrepancy that led L'Osservatore Romano ... "
- No. Since they (mistakenly) thought that the date given was correct, it could only have been the discrepancy in the location which they based their conclusions on.
- "The date and location mentioned in the petition could have been based on a later version of the Wikipedia article, which had been altered considerably since the scientists' petition was written."
- I don't understand this at all. How can anything in the petition have been based on a version of the Wikipedia article that was not written until later? The original point of this paragraph, which disappeared with your change, was that L'Oservatore Romano must have based its accusations on a later version of the article that was not available when the petition was written. I have restored the original and tried to clarify it.
I have made a few other cosmetic changes which I don't think alters anything of substance. The main one was a shifting of the text
- "Ratzinger in fact repeated this speech several times in different cities about this time, and it is possible that the slight difference of wording might reflect a different deliverance of the speech."
to a later part of the article which seemed to me to be a more logical place for it. —David Wilson (talk · cont) 12:37, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Muhammad Captions & Conjectural Images
I think we agree more than disagree. Certainly there are some who raise the conjectural images innocently enough, but it seems that there are others who persist in arguing against them do to their inaccuracy even after acknowledging that they are conjectural images. While a caption would catch the former, I'm not so sure it would do much to dissuade the latter. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MasonicDevice (talk • contribs) 01:07, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Academy
Hey Pharos, while I responded to your Village Pump article, I do want to say that I think your idea is neat and if you feel that the subject of Wine would meet your criteria, the Wine Project would certainly be interested in helping to facilitate the event. We could help the content drive with creating lists of good reliable sources (online & offline), tips on writing wine related articles on different topics (grapes, wine regions, wine history, wineries, wine bios, etc) as well as creating a list of new articles that are needed. The nice thing about wine is that it is such a broad and diverse subject covering everything from history (Colonial British wine trade-responsible for Bordeaux, Maderia, Port & Sherry being famous), literature (Thomas Jefferson and wine), business & law (Three-tier (alcohol distribution) could be expanded as well as articles on various states/countries' wine laws), Science & biology (Winemaking technology and expansions of the grape disease and wine fault sub topics), as well as culinary (Wine in cooking and several splinter articles could come out of Wine and food matching like Wine and cheese). Oh and the Long Island wine article (as well as other New York and New Jersey wine topics) could always use some expanding and local pictures. I think there could be a little something for everyone. :) AgneCheese/Wine 08:21, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose I should take the lack of reply as a sign of disinterest, but I do want to point out one thing that may interest your group and the students helping. The motivation for a lot of people in Wikipedia is to create something of lasting significance and value that people can use to enrich their lives. While topics like Humanities, Literary History and Academics are certainly important, the "overall impact" that your project will have via its involvement with Wikipedia will be smaller due to the lack of audience. Take for consideration the article traffic for the main topic page in each category.
-
- Wine - 139,000+ page views in Feb
- Humanities - 26,000+ page views in Feb
- History of Literature - 5000+ page views in Feb
- Academics - 1430+ page views in Feb
-
- Again, while I will not discount the importance of those categories, I think its pretty fair to say that the sizable portion of unwritten and unexpanded wine articles will have a broader audience than those articles in the Humanities, Academics and Literary History sphere. The Columbia University students and your group will have an opportunity for time and effort to have a larger impact and reach more people with a subject like wine. Just some food (or wine :p) for thought. AgneCheese/Wine 16:41, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- Hi Agne. I appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in this project, and I'm going to definitely raise this option when I go to the Columbia Free Culture Meeting tonight. Though I'm not sure if an alcohol topic would be OK with the university, when most of the students will probably be under 21. And, I'm a little skeptical of your numbers above, because people tend to be interested in specific topics in the Humanities (authors, books, artistic movements), rather than the academic discipline itself. But your willingness to help with sources, etc., definitely will count in the Wine Project's favor.--Pharos (talk) 20:13, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

| New York City Meetup
|
In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, and have salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).
Well also make preparations for our exciting Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, a free content photography contest for Columbia University students planned for Friday March 28 (about 2 weeks after our meeting).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
You're also invited to subscribe to the public Wikimedia New York City mailing list, which is a great way to receive timely updates.

Hi. I went to Wikimedia Commons and signed in so I could upload the pics I took, but there's no "Upload file" function in the left hand menu as there is on the 'pedia. How do you upload files to the Commons? Also, what was the website you had me upload the videos to? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 04:17, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- I just uploaded the pics to the Commons, and posted 20 of 'em on the 3.16.08 Meetup Page. Btw (shameless plug), I just posted my latest figure drawings on my MySpace page. I'd have to add you as a Friend, but if you're interested, I post them from the sessions I go to every Wednesday night, as well as other artwork too. The ones I just posted are the sixth this year. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 06:36, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Adding names to the photos on Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC
Hi Pharos. A brand new editor, User:Bluelight2b, has reverted some names that Science Apologist added to the photo captions. Do you have an opinion on this? I could add some names from my own recollection (only adding names that are already given elsewhere on the page) but won't do so unless it's clear that it's the right thing to do. Bluelight didn't give any reason for his concern, and hasn't provided an email address. EdJohnston (talk) 03:15, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
- I think the issue is that some users like Brad and Josh have followings at WikiReview/WikiTruth. Granted it didn't take Brandt more than a day to ID them from this Meetup's gallery. I'd say leave them blank unless we're certain the person has disclosed their physical identity on-wiki. MBisanz talk 17:34, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Article writing drive
Hi. Any article writing scheme in principal of course is an excellent idea particularly if it is Columbia students. More lecturers and school teachers in my view can use wikipedia as an educational tool not only for reading but for writing practice. As you may be well aware there is significant uneveness all across the project but inevitably some areas are far weaker than others, particularly in relation to the domination of Anglo-Centric/American articles in proportion to the content of the rest of the world. For me personally, geographical articles are very important to an encyclopedia and if you browse through some of the categories of African cities for example the number of articles and indeed depth of them is nowhere near what it could or should be. I doubt very much though that any new articles would have enough references to develop it beyond a stub, but I sincerely hope eventually countries in Africa will develop enough to increase the relaying of info on the web.
What I would recommend however, is to point them to the core list, Wikipedia:The Core Contest/Articles, which lists encyclopedia articles which many of us consider a core article but at present is shockingly lacking either in content, conciseness or quality. Veropedia for one has highlighted some of these articles many of them only a start class which need a great deal of development e.g River Seine etc which should ideally be a lot more detailed. It may of course depend on the subject as some of the teachers/lecturers may recommend work in a given subject. Other than this I would link them to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedia articles where there are detailed lists (far from complete though) a missing articles. Also perhaps see the categories which have been tagged as requesting for expansion by populating with new articles; I'm certain there are many.
Other than this I believe as suggested above the focus should be on Non western articles. For me counteracting systematic bias is perhaps the most important goal of this project.
If you have any further questions feel free to give me a bell. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:27, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I was aware that the event had been postponed. Well, sorry to be bearer of bad news, but it looks like you will need to postpone the event, yet again :( . - That's unfortunate. A friend and I intended to participate, but I don't think that we'll be headed up to New York to walk around in the rain and take dreary photographs. I suspect that others will be similarly reluctant, and I hope that this doesn't significantly affect the turnout.

I agree that the play should be mentioned in adaptations, the only reason it hasnt been added thus far was because we did not have a reliable reference for it. I believe that you would be looking for User:TexasDex, the organizer of Philly meetup 6, in this case. Regards and good luck with your project. --ImmortalGoddezz (t/c) 22:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Re:Meetup thread?
Did I get incivil with David Shankbone? I thought I was presenting a legitimate concern. BusterD (talk) 04:22, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- My primary concern is unintentional harm done to uninvolved parties, as was the case with Brad. One photographer's stridency isn't relevant to whether a user chooses to put others' safety at risk. No mere policy or page consensus is relevant to such an actual life or death issue. In my comments I never made a statement of policy, neither did I characterize anyone's motives. I simply reported my experience, and made a predictive generalization. Hey, I liked the idea of meeting some of those I know online, but all this drama will keep me from participating. You can run your events anyway you want, but be aware your choices will determine attendance. Sorry if this conversation has been negative; I've been paid to run large (somewhat political) volunteer-driven events before (and done it for free, too), and I thought I might offer a varying perspective, based on hard experience. BusterD (talk) 12:51, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well, one paid political operative's dramatic "life or death in photos" and cluelessness is not going to trump our "mere policy or page consensus". Both Pharos and I have told you, in no uncertain terms, that it was Brad who put himself at risk, and that it was *not* a case of "unintentional harm done to uninvolved parties". It was a case of Brad willingly being photographed, indeed, joining photographs. What part of this do you just not understand, and how many more links to photos do I need to give you? At this point, I just find you offensive and I am thankful you will not be there - the Meet-Ups are enjoyable social occasions, and we can do without your drama and your clinging to false notions, which have been dispelled repeatedly. --David Shankbone 13:05, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Again with the spinning and characterizations. I wasn't talking to you, David Shankbone. I have heard quite enough from you. If you knew how highly I valued your opinion, you wouldn't waste your time expressing it to me. I was trying to explain my concerns civilly, outside of a more public discussion area, to the person who's been talking real-world responsibility for these events, the fellow who has to deal with consequences and with his legal name attached. BusterD (talk) 13:20, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- No, I'm more concerned with you stoking undue fear in people. You aren't my target audience, BusterD, and you are not nearly important enough on the site to anyone who doesn't like Wikipedia to be a target. The truth is, the vast majority of people on here have nothing to hide, and even people who are loathed by the enemies of Wikipedia, like User:Cberlet, User:JoshuaZ and User:David Gerard are out about who they are in real life, and haven't had their children, dogs or family members threatened with death. If the stakes are so high for you, or anyone, in editing an online encyclopedia, you *really* should not be here. Brad was targeted for his position as an ArbCom member and Admin, and, to be honest, because he had made it clear he valued his anonymity. If editors act like there are consequences, then people will target them. This is wisdom, and surely you must know that once you reveal a weakness in yourself, it gets exploited by people who don't like you. You are starting to sound ridiculous, and if your hysteria is warranted, then I will put it to you plainly: you shouldn't be here. Right now I see you stoking fear in 19 year olds who edit Pokemon articles, when there are people who have put far more on the line than you who would disagree with what you are saying (including, I might add, some of the people whose names you throw around - and I'm in a position to know).--David Shankbone 13:36, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

- Oy vey. Look, I don't fully understand why the conversation between you two has devolved in this way. I can only say (1) There is zero chance that anyone will photograph someone who does not wish to be photographed, for all the reasons explained, (2) we are not turning the chapter into a secret society (3) everyone always has been and remains welcome to come to the meetup, and (4) as interim Chapter President, I officially declare all New York meetups a wikidrama-free zone (you'd be amazed how the tone is shifted when human beings actually have faces).--Pharos (talk) 16:07, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Planning for the 7th Wikipedia Meetup
The planning for the summer Philadelphia meetup has begun. We would appreciate your input.
You're getting this invitation because you're on Wikipedia:WikiProject Philadelphia/Philadelphia meet-up invite list. BrownBot (talk) 21:44, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] ITN candidate page mockup
Please take a look at User:BanyanTree/Sandbox. I couldn't figure out a way to automatically update the Current events templates AND put conversation under the relevant day's template without getting someone to make a bot to create a specialize discussion template that transcludes each day's current events template. I also took a stab at a timer, though I'm not sure I got the coding right. Feel free to play around in the sandbox to make it conform more closely with your vision. - BanyanTree 01:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] NYC Meetup: June 1, 2008
| New York City Meetup
|
In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).
We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).
This has been an automated delivery by BrownBot (talk) 00:22, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I am likely to come but I have yet to make the arrangements. Sorry for being so out of the loop ... we got less nagging this time, which does help remind us. And yes, I should sign up for the mailing list; I don't have an excuse anymore.
As for video, my camera could do it but it only has 512MB on it, and I don't know how long that lasts. If someone else has, say, a 2 or even 4GB card, that might work. Daniel Case (talk) 21:23, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] ITN/C changes
Hi. I noticed you changed the format of ITN/C, in accordance with BanyanTree's suggestion. While I am not outright opposed to the change, I do not think it is a great idea to make the change without a larger discussion. I know the idea was fairly well-received on the ITN 2.0 talk page, but a larger discussion at ITN Talk would have been nice. Perhaps you could temporarily revert yourself until a more formal agreement is reached? Random89 09:01, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Fair enough, BOLD action is probably needed in the case of ITN, and seeing your comments on the ITN talk page, perhaps we should at least try it for a few days. On the other hand, many of the "regular" contributors which deal with ITN on a more ongoing basis had not necessarily commented on the format, which is where my hesitance stemmed from. Random89 18:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Ooh, look at me commenting before realizing you had been reverted. The "I ignored your reminders of the ongoing discussion but because nobody asked me directly what my opinion is, so I'm going to revert"-aspect gets to me. Despite my initial impulse to go risk my adminship, it looks like we're going to talk some more. <sigh> This is precisely why I have largely removed myself from policy/process discussions - you spend an eternity trying to get people to step outside their preconceptions and personalities rather than discussing actual topics. Though of course the same could be said of myself. Heh. - BanyanTree 00:11, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] DC-Baltimore chapter
I'm not really much involved in the chapter formation; Swatjester seems to be leading the effort. I've posted your note on his user talk page; if you don't hear from him, you might want to follow up directly. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:57, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia Takes Nashville
Thanks for catching my cheat sheet errors :) I've made handouts and registration forms for the event that I'm going to genericize to put on Wikipedia Takes The City next week. I'll let you know how everything goes tomorrow. Thanks again for all your help! Kaldari (talk) 23:13, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] May, 2008
This edit[3] was certainly unhelpful. You seem to know that the article in question is the subject of an WP:AFD. Blanking an article in the middle of an AFD discussion is, to say the least, improper. 09:12, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- Wow. I see you're an administrator who has deleted this article before, no less. You should know the proper procedure, I think. Someone is rebuilding it constructively. I would simply have reverted. Wikidemo (talk) 09:14, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] ITN/C
Okay, thanks. SpencerT♦C 20:51, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] ITN
I suggest the wording of the first item be fixed to (changes in bold): "In the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake, Chinese officials evacuate 100,000 people from Mianyang as engineers prepare to drain the landslide-created Tangjiashan Lake." It still may need to be tweaked and "drain" could link to drainage, but that's up to you. SpencerT♦C 23:10, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've modified it, taking your suggestions into account (some folks probably not like it, though, if I linked "Chinese" to People's Republic of China).--Pharos (talk) 23:20, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- One more thing: you might want to fix the landslide dam-created link to [[landslide dam|landslide-created]]. SpencerT♦C 23:22, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- I kind of like it the way it is, because it advertises to people that there is a distinct "landslide dam" article, and the link isn't hidden.--Pharos (talk) 23:27, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- One more thing: you might want to fix the landslide dam-created link to [[landslide dam|landslide-created]]. SpencerT♦C 23:22, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Main page
Hmm... is my screen too big? What size are we aiming for?--Pharos (talk) 19:22, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- I feel as if I am answering Sphinx's questions. You see, the main page balance is not an exact science; it is dependent upon various factors, such as screen resolution, window configuration, font size and browser. I have been told so many different complaints by different users, I really don't know which tune I should dance to. I guess what we can do is to tolerate small, insignificant blank spaces on Main Page (on our screens), and fix any seriously big chunk of blank space. --BorgQueen (talk) 19:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Edit Feud Problem
Some time ago I received a weird email, requesting assistance; I tried to resolve the problem, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrators% 27_noticeboard/Incidents&diff=prev&oldid=214315379 on administrators board. I tried to resolve the problem; User Mkil and somebody else have been at war with a guy named boxingwear.
You can see the history here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:MKil&action=history
- It is obvious privacy violation is a problem here, I do not think Mkil has the right to do what he is doing, doing this on purpose and he knows it. There is also 3kk warning on his site and many other warnings.
I am not sure what to do here, you are administrator so see what could be done.
- In the above link edit feud has been reported but nothing has been resolved.
thank you for your time Whatsupdoggy (talk) 21:11, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
The above user thinks everybody is boxignwear, i simply reverted his page: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:MKil&action=history privacy vilation, mkil is using names, not name of the account he is not supposed to use, now he even posted same reply on noticeboard, this problem truly violates wikipedia rules, i simply reverted the name, nothing more and nothing else, is that a crime? 64.107.220.166 (talk) 21:43, 30 May 2008 (UTC) Antandrus as an administrator should enforce those rules, he is not, he is supporting mkil on this minor problem, i do not care if library or indonesia is blocked, privacy rules do not seem to matter to some people here...I reverted again name calling and mkil is responsible for his actions, he knows the rules, he has 3rr warnings on his talk page, he should not be allowed to edit, this is only about name calling, i am not reverting anything else! He had 3rr problem before http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MKil#3RR
—Preceding unsigned comment added by Whatsupdoggy (talk • contribs) 21:50, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Reeves, projects and the rest have nothing to do with each other, except boxingwear is one and the only and thank you so much for help, you cant even take care of simply privacy violation, such good deed will be always remembered...you are doing great job!

[edit] NY/NYC Museums
Pharos, as we talked about on Sunday, here are the links:
- List of museums in New York (beautifully organized table of red-links that I'm working on blue-ing)
- List of museums and cultural institutions in New York City, blue but a mess. Most of the blues need serious clean-up, am slowly working my way through. Was nice to meet you Sunday, looking forward to the next. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 13:13, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Template talk:In the news
Can you please look into implementing the solution I suggested on the ITN talk page? I really don't see why the discussion couldn't be tied directly to the ITN/C page so that the watchlist would more accurately track discussion there. Just make the portal template show the portal items, while the formal nomination, wording, and discussion remains text on the page. I don't think there would be anything wrong with that. -- Grant.Alpaugh 17:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hey Pharos, I finally visualized what Grant was trying to describe at Template talk:In the news. He has a valid point about watchlisting ITN/C. The original design that you came up didn't require a bot because it was all hardcoded. However, since the most recent changes you implemented in response to feedback require bot maintenance anyway, I'm actually OK with Grant's proposal. We'd lose some of the integration with the portal, in particular the ability to watch new portal items being added and modified, while gaining watchlist functionality for ITN/C, as well getting rid of one transclusion a day. It seems like a decent trade. What do you think?
- On a side note, I don't know if I've ever been this argumentative on the wiki. The amount of real world work I'm not getting done is astonishing. <sigh> - BanyanTree 03:34, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Page I'm working on
I built the Gloria Yip article from scratch. It's been quite a challenge due to the languge barrier. It's easy to talk about her film roles because they're subtitled. I'm guessing it can never reach GA status without a picture, though. It would probably need someone who speaks Cantonese to make it better, and one of my sources is in an illegible text that I can't Babelfish, so I'm taking for granted what Chinese Wikipedia claims it says s true. I recently added all the Chinese titles of her films (except for the Japanese film, which IMDb doesn't even have in its Japanese title)--I'm not sure if I should have done that. --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 14:57, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
