[edit] Anarchism: Nashville connection to Haymarket affair
Ryan, I have just found an item in an 1886 Nashville newspaper indicating that Adolph Fischer, an anarchist ultimately hanged for a supposed role in the Haymarket bombing that year, had spent time in Nashville and was the brother of a local printer.
Just asking because I know you have interests in both Nashville history and 19th-century anarchist movements: Do you know whether anyone has covered this connection in past historiography. I'm thinking of featuring it in my weekly history column at NashvillePost.com.
All best, Tom

[edit] Interview of sorts
As you have been involved in Wikipedia for a substantial length of time (relative to most wikipedians I know!) and have been willing to enter into controversial disputes, I was wondering if you would be willing to let me "interview" you over email for my Wikimania paper. I am planning on writing a paper on "online collaborative writing". I'm trying to collect as many perspectives as possible. I would really appreciate it! Awadewit | talk 01:48, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] GGB Reflection in Raindrops
Hi, Kaldari, Avter you voted for the image GGB Reflection in Raindrops it was added to refraction article. I've also added it to lens article. If you saw it and still stay with your vote, it is of course absolutely fine, but, if you have not seen it yet, may I please ask you to take a look and maybe reconsider your vote. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 21:41, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Gennaro Rubino (cont.)
Thanks for that...I have seen her today and will pass it on to her. I think she is as much in the dark about dates as I am...I presume the family are descended fom him when he was here early in life. From what I gather about him he would've been quite capable of abandoning them for some greater cause. Jack1956 (talk) 12:11, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Deletion of images
Do you know how to delete images? I know nothing and have tried to delete this image, but I think I messed it up big time. It is an image that is not of Mary Shelley (it is some unknown person). Since we can't identify it as anyone, I see no reason to have it around labeled as "Mary Shelley" confusing everyone. Can you fix what I messed up? Sorry! Awadewit | talk 19:12, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Seeking your advice on usage of flag icon
Under my talk page I am in a discussion regarding the proper use of flag icons on article. Initially, I placed the flag on the intro sections for 2 US presidential candidates. Another wiki user TVOZ advised me to not use these flag icons on any individual articles because they could be viewed as too political and against NPOV. I asked him why the flag icon exists if users should not use them (waiting response). I see you have worked on this issue and wanted to see your advice on the proper usage on the flag icon. Prior to TVOZ comment to me, I had added the flag to a Nigerian politician, Austrian politician, 2 American publishers, and a British art historian. Your advise is appreciated. It is me i think (talk) 20:06, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for helping me better understand the flag icon use policy. It is me i think (talk) 20:21, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia Takes Nashville
Hi, I've already sent you a general e-mail through the 'e-mail this user' function. So you should check whatever e-mail that points to. I'll also send you another e-mail with contact info for who I talked with at O'Reilly Media and addressing your other questions.--Pharos (talk) 00:52, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Did you get my e-mails? I would like to correspond with you more, if I can help.--Pharos (talk) 20:36, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- The Goals page looks great, but should consider adding more items if you can (you only have about 60). I'm concerned though, about the level of organization; have you approached other people and local institutions yet (as I mentioned in my e-mail)?. You should also put a request on Wikipedia:Geonotice, and write in to the weekend sections of local newspapers and magazines. I see you have a Facebook page, but you should be aware that only a small percentage of Facebook signups will actually come (speaking from our experience). You might consider delaying a month or two so that you can establish a good organization, advertise well, and ensure a good participation. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 20:24, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
- OK, it's great you've made those contacts, I hope you can improve on our experience. I really do think you should make that request for Wikipedia:Geonotice, a great tool which can notify every Wikipedian in your region on their watchlists. And by the way, do you understand all the crazy templates and stuff I did on Commons?--Pharos (talk) 22:44, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- {{WTM}} creates a template showing an image is part of the project, attributing it to the right team, putting it in a category for that team's pictures, and putting an appropriate license tag on.
-
- {{WTMid}} inputs a code number and outputs an article name. We decided the make a code number for every location ahead of time, so you can write this simple number on the index card when you're taking the "context photograph", and also using that number when you upload the picture.
- Hi again. Have you tried Commonist? Also, you might be interested in our point system, which gave 5 extra points if you got an interior shot as well as an exterior shot (the baseline was 10 points for the near goals, and 20 points for the far goals). By the way, I've e-mailed Gmaxwell a couple of times now; I'm not sure what's delaying him.--Pharos (talk) 00:58, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- You might want to contact this Nashville blogger, who has run a sort of online photo contest for a couple of years. She might help you publicize this to the Nashville blog-reading community.--Pharos (talk) 01:00, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- If you have any last questions about the technicalities of uploading the and tagging the images (I notice you haven't created any templates), or anything else, I'd be glad to help from my experience; keep in mind that Commonist is a great tool, but it doesn't work perfectly 100% of the time, and you might have to re-upload a picture or two. By, the way, do you understand the thing at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes The City about renaming the files so they show up in the right order? Someone wrote a Mac program for us to do this, and I guess I could try to e-mail it to you if you want it.
[edit] Images and accuracy
Hi. No, I don't think you're harassing me. I see the point you are trying to make and I completely agree with you that images on Wikipedia should be as accurate as possible. The thing is, I think you're sometimes seeing things that aren't there, like the assumption that I used HDRI on an image when I didn't. You're making big assumptions about the accuracy of an image without having been there at the time and perhaps without fundamental understanding of photography (as you alluded to). Now I know that a layman should be able to use common sense to determine when something looks realistic or not, and sometimes it is obvious and possible. Grossly exaggerated colour saturation to make a photo look 'pretty' is easy to spot, as is overdone HDR tone mapping such as this. But most of my photos are not significantly processed at all, beyond brightening and enhancing contrast where it is weak. This is not falsification of a scene. Technically a camera is inherently incapable of capturing all data from a scene accurately - it does processing internally to turn signals into images. There will always be situations where extra processing is necessary.
We could always argue back and forth about what looks accurate and what doesn't, and nobody could ever prove or another who was right. It seems as though you associate documentary photography as being unprocessed and 'pure', but this is definitely not the case. Of course documentary photographers are not going to include or remove content from a scene (and when they do, they're in big trouble), but they will enhance existing detail to ensure that it stands out.
Anyway, I could go on and on, and I will take on board your wish that post-processing be toned down, but if I'm faced with the choice between losing detail in the highlights or shadows (because a single exposure cannot capture it or because the camera's default response curve means it is lost), I will continue to do my best to recover it. Isn't THAT commitment to the accuracy of a scene, given that our eyes capture more dynamic range than a camera can? In my opinion, putting up with whatever the default settings of a camera spit out is putting up with mediocrity. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 09:42, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:Birth Control cover.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Birth Control cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? [edit] Rejecting obsolete
Yes, I do routinely mark these obsolete pages as rejected. Rejected is a harsh term but it is the tag we use for proposals which have not been accepted. Please read the policy page on proposals. I typically prune old proposals each month or the list of proposals becomes clogged and worthless. If your proposal has died out you might want to advertise it at the Village pump or at related project pages. Good luck! --Kevin Murray (talk) 22:49, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:Silence and consensus
Wikipedia:Silence and consensus is an essay. I've asked for feedback at the Burma project. I've no objection to your proposal, but I do have an objection to your actions and sensitivities around this, so I will now become more involved. --Kevin Murray (talk) 23:04, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, having faith works both ways, and your status as an Admin holds no weight in this discussion. You could have just reverted the routine tagging and be done with it, but now you've made it an unpleasant issue. Just show a bit of support for tagging it as a guideline and be happy. Cheers! --Kevin Murray (talk) 23:18, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Burma
I entirely agree with your comments on the recent name change of the article "Burma" to "Myanmar." I do not understand how one person, acting unilaterally and without democratic support, can change the name of an entire country. And I'm talking about both Nichalp and the Burmese Military Junta here. Incidentally, the "Straw Poll" Nichalp used to justify his decision now stands at 17 votes each. Where does that leave us?Angstriddenyouth (talk) 19:38, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Rewards
Hey, that would be fine as long as you're definitely sure you're willing to honour the commitment (it would be a bit awkward if someone made an FA and didn't get the reward they were promised!). Does your offer include other currencies (i.e. the equivalent of $10 in whatever currency)? naerii - talk 20:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well then that's awesome - thank you for your generosity! :) I'll make a note on the page now. I will probably be expanding the list slightly in the future (to one more column) - please watchlist the page and let me know if you have a problem with any of the additions. Thanks again! naerii - talk 21:09, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggstion! The list there was just a few things that came off the top of my head. I'm going to revise it in a bit and it should hopefully be something along the lines of countries, important events and the cultures of Africa, Asia and (maybe) Latin America. Things like the Second Congo War. I just recently started flicking through high priority articles in areas of systemic bias lately and was absolutely amazed by the breadth of our shortcomings. I'm having to contain myself and not make the list a massive huge thing :) Is there a limit that you'd like the list to stick at? Feel free to edit it yourself! naerii - talk 21:22, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. What do you think of the current list? :) naerii - talk 21:46, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Authorization for CountryBot?
Hi, User:CountryBot was identified on WP:UAA as an account ending in "-bot" that was not an authorized bot. It does not appear in Wikipedia:Bots/Status or Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. I have blocked it until this is cleared up. Please advise. --MCB (talk) 19:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
