The card featured defenses of two UFC champions - middleweight champion Anderson Silva and lightweight champion Sean Sherk, who both won their titles at UFC 64. They defended their titles against former King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt and former WEC champion Hermes Franca, respectively. Former PRIDE heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira made his UFC debut against Heath Herring, whom he had already defeated twice before in the PRIDE organization. Nogueira defeated Herring by unanimous decision after three rounds. Eddie Bravo, who was there to give his opinion on the scoring of the fight for the audience, said that he believed the referee could have stopped the fight at the end of the first round, after Herring scored a solid kick to the head of Nogueira that knocked him to the mat.
Sherk defeated Franca by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46) after five rounds. During the start of first two rounds Franca attempted multiple flying knee strikes on the champion, in the second round Sherk was dropped to the canvas after a knee landed flush. However, Franca was unable to capitalize on this and was flipped on to his back and controlled by the more powerful Sherk.
The CSAC later announced that both fighters tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.[6] Sherk was eventually stripped of the title.
Evans and Ortiz fought to a unanimous draw after three rounds. In the first round Ortiz was warned by the referee to not grab the fence. In the second round Ortiz grabbed the fence again to prevent himself from being taken down and was penalized a point, ultimately leading to a unanimous 28-28 score. At the post fight conference the next day, both fighters were heated towards each other, and had an exchange of words.
