In their previous encounter at UFC 45, referee Larry Landless had stopped the fight prematurely after a miscommunication. The ring side announcers commented that Phil Baroni looked exhausted for most of the fight.
Matt Hughes defeats B.J. Penn's training partner, Renato Verissimo, by unanimous decision. Judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27. Verissimo had Hughes in trouble when he secured a Triangle Choke in the first round but Hughes managed to escape.
  • For the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship belt

Frank Mir defeats former champion, Tim Sylvia, by technical submission (armbar) at :50 of round one. Referee Herb Dean called a stop to the bout when he noticed a break in Sylvia's arm which appeared to Sylvia and the audience as an early stoppage; it was later revealed that Sylvia had indeed suffered multiple fractures to his right forearm. [4] Mir becomes the UFC Heavyweight Champion. Sylvia had earlier relinquished his championship belt after testing positive for anabolic steroids after UFC 44.

Trigg defeats Hallman by technical knockout (punches) at 4:15 of round one.
In the main event of the evening, Ken Shamrock defeats Kimo Leopoldo by knockout (knee strike to the head) at 1:26 of round one.
