- Light Heavyweight bout:
Forrest Griffin vs.

- In the highly anticipated rematch, Forrest Griffin defeated Stephan Bonnar by unanimous decision. Judges scored the bout 30-27 for Griffin. Even though the match was anticipated and the audience was cheering throughout the whole match, while Joe Rogan was post-fight interviewing Griffin the audience jeered until he left the Octagon. Following the bout, Bonnar tested positive by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for boldenone, a banned anabolic steroid, and received a nine-month suspension and a $5,000 fine. In a later interview, Bonnar stated that he took the steroids to help him heal from a previous elbow injury that has been nagging him for many months. He believed it would've been out of his system before the fight and said the fight was on one month's notice.[3]
- Light Heavyweight Championship Bout: Champion
Chuck Liddell vs.
Renato Sobral
- In the main event of the evening, Chuck Liddell defends his championship and defeats Renato Sobral by technical knockout (referee stoppage, due to strikes) at 1:35 of round one. This was the second meeting between the two, the first match occurred at UFC 40.
- The match was given heightened importance as a potential superfight set in November between Liddell and PRIDE Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva hinged on a Liddell victory at UFC 62. That superfight however did not materialize as negotiations between the UFC and PRIDE broke down.
- Although Sobral only pocketed a purse of $21,000 (according to disclosed figures released to the NSAC), he was given a bonus check from the Fertittas, owners of UFC, at the ambulance that later took him to the hospital that night, according to CNNMoney.com. Although its not known how much that check was for, Sobral appeared quite appreciative and was told by the Fertittas that they "were going to see [him] again." [4]
