UFC 69: Shootout was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday, April 7, 2007 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.[1] UFC 69: Shootout was the first UFC event ever held in the state of Texas.

The card was headlined by heavy favourite Georges St. Pierre defending his welterweight title against The Ultimate Fighter 4 welterweight winner Matt Serra.[2] The co-main event was a rematch held between top welterweight contenders Josh Koscheck and then-undefeated Diego Sanchez. Sanchez defeated Koscheck by split decision in the semi-finals of the original Ultimate Fighter 1 series in the middleweight division; as with all TUF bouts prior to the finals, this was an exhibition bout and is not on either fighter's record.[3]

[edit] Preliminary card

Cummo defeats Haynes by knockout from a punch at 2:45 of round two. Haynes would protest the stoppage, but it was clear he was unconscious, as when he woke up he immediately tried to shoot in on the referee and took him down, with Luke Cummo looking baffled next to them. This preliminary bout was aired on the broadcast.
Davis defeats Spratt by submission (achilles lock) at 2:57 of round two. This preliminary bout was not aired on the broadcast.
Leites defeats Sell by unanimous judges' decision after three rounds. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Leites. This preliminary bout was not aired on the broadcast.
Herring defeats Imes by unanimous judges' decision after three rounds. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Herring.[4] This preliminary bout was not aired on the broadcast.

[edit] Main card

Grove defeats Belcher by submission (D'Arce choke) at 4:32 of round two.
Okami defeats Swick by unanimous judges' decision after three rounds. The judges scored the bout 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27 for Okami.
Huerta defeats Garcia by unanimous judges' decision after three rounds. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Huerta. The match was later awarded Fight of the Night honors by the UFC.[5]. During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Huerta again asserted the legality of the controversial knee that he threw at a downed John Halverson during UFC 67. Garcia was a short-notice replacement for Huerta's original scheduled opponent, Alvin Robinson.[6]
Koscheck defeats Sanchez by unanimous judges' decision after three rounds. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Koscheck. Both fighters employed an unaggresive style that was poorly received by the attending audience, who booed throughout the match. Koscheck used his superior reach to win the kickboxing exchanges, while Sanchez made no attempt to take Koscheck to the mat.[4] This fight marked Sanchez's first professional loss.
According to Dana White, Sanchez falsely tested positive for Hepatitis C and nearly announced his retirement the day before this bout. When further analysis came back with negative results, Sanchez was cleared to fight. Sanchez was diagnosed with a staph infection the day after.[7]
In the main event, Matt Serra defeats Georges St. Pierre by technical knockout due to strikes at 3:25 of the first round. Serra first caught St. Pierre with a damaging right hook, then executed a flurry of punches as St. Pierre struggled to recover. St. Pierre eventually fell to the mat, where Serra continued striking until the referee stopped the fight. Serra became the UFC Welterweight Champion. This was considered a tremendous upset, as Matt Serra was an 11-to-1 underdog against St. Pierre.[8]
