- Yeh I noticed that LOL!!! But please don't get offended when some editors say something wrong. You know, not every user on here knows of your brilliant work. You know that thousand editors on here are big fans of yours... And I'm a big fan of yours. I'm still stuck in Talk:Jodhaa Akbar... I did a great analysis and this user (who was a sockpuppet btw) doesn't even look at it. It's OK that historians say something. But Wikipedia is not here to make conclusions about tall claims. Historians say something, but their words aren't facts, but views. So my opinion is to write, "according to several historians... Jodhaa wasn't the nae of Akbar's wife" rather than "Jodhaa vever existed".

[edit] French communes
Hey Stavro, good to see you back! I plan to make an automatic map using the decimal "longitude" and "latitude" fields in the French infobox, but it will be for in a week or so, because I'm going on holidays (to France actually). Keep up the good work! Markussep Talk 19:11, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- Do you mean this one? I rather like it, but if you have something better, show me. Markussep Talk 19:18, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

- Hmmm, the map is not completely north oriented (it should be rotated a bit counterclockwise), so I can't use it. This one is, but it doesn't have the regional borders and the elevation shading. We can use France blank.svg, or we could try to rotate the France jms.png map. Markussep Talk 12:46, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

- If the infobox data has "longitude" and "latitude" with plain decimal formatting (like the articles in fr: have), it creates a map and title coordinates, without any extra work. But the test infobox is still in my user space, I asked for comments at the infobox talk page. Markussep Talk 18:17, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
- Nice picture above, by the way. How you got it I have no idea, I'm afraid. :) John Carter (talk) 16:29, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

- Which France template do you mean, the one that's on the talk page of all France-related articles? What I plan to do next is make a manual for the infobox template. We have to determine the minimum contents requirements for the infobox (my proposal: department, arrondissement, canton, coordinates, map, population). We can use the Wikipedia:WikiProject French communes/Status page for progress, if everyone checks the departments alphabetically, we could write "checked until Foissiat" in the last column of "Ain" for instance. I see my German/Austrian accomplice Ksnow is working on Ain now, great! Markussep Talk 13:02, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

- AWB may help adding project tags. I'm not sure whether AWB has an option to access the talk page of articles in a specific category (I'm not on my own computer now, so I don't have access to AWB). If there isn't an automatic option, you could save a list of articles in a category, find-and-replace add "Talk:" to the names, and use the new list. Markussep Talk 13:21, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Argentina settlement box
Hi, glad to see you back in action, I think an occasional break can help relieve the stress, I hope you did something worthwhile during your break. I'm not sure if you remember the discussion about adding in provincial map and Greater Buenos Aires map parameters to the Argentina settlement box, I reckon it's a good idea but don't know how to do it myself. The problem is that User:Moebiusuibeom-en doesn't like the current layout and removed the box from Tigre, Buenos Aires. I left a message on his talk page and reinstated the placebox, he has then subsequently me of vandalism. I'm not massively upset about it since I know I have made a valuable contribution to the project, but I do think it's out of order for people to resort to name-calling (of the worst kind for this place) over a simple content dispute. Putting that aside, do you think it would be possible to add in the extra maps in order to resolve the situation, I know you are busy with France at the moment, but new maps would make a big difference to a whole stack of articles. If you are too busy perhaps you know someone else clever at adding maps to the settlement box, Kind regards. English peasant 12:14, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- They use this one on Dutch wiki Image:Buenos aires province.png, They also have this one Image:Buenos Aires outline map.svg for GBA. Could you set them up, or should I ask MJCdetroit to do it? Regards English peasant 13:31, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- I cant figure out how the Dutch wiki settlement box knows which additional map to use. See nl:Lanús_(Buenos_Aires) and nl:Mar del Plata for examples. So for future reference, how will we make the box on en:wiki display the correct secondary map, "Greater Buenos Aires=yes" or something? English peasant 13:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- I think that map would be better for Mar del Plata, the Greater Buenos Aires map would be better for Tigre, could you set that up too please, and ignore my question above I see the answer after your edit to Tigre. English peasant 13:49, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

- Yeah I saw you removed the country map from Tigre, I wikilinked Greater Buenos Aires, it would be good if the Greater Buenos Aires article showed it's location in Argentina though, I'll have a look for a map that illustrates this. I agree the provincial settlements should have 2 maps, I think they could be a bit smaller though, the settlement boxes are pretty big as they are, I'll have a px tinker before I run through the Buenos Aires settlements later today, I've done Depertment cabeceras for Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Chaco, Chubut, Corrientes & Mendoza, other people have done Neuquen, Santa Fe & Entre Rios, (they will all need maps sooner or later) I'm going to have a go at Entre Rios and Jujuy next. - Hello English peasant and Blofeld of SPECTRE, sorry for any misunderstandings, I have nothing against Place-boxes in absolute, i think in most cases they definitely should be there, my concern was that the map had no relation for a small town in suburbia Buenos Aires and that it seemed oversized, but now with the latest version we are getting somewhere, current map looks much better, but i believe it still lacks some precision, provincial map would not be necessary since it is within Grand Buenos Aires, anything outside the Grand BA city limits would certainly be provincial and would require such map, in both cases I truly i don't think the Argentina map would be necessary, nevertheless, we have many maps from different sources and i find a lot of inconsistency design wise, please let me see if i can design a set of maps for the whole area.

- regarding the Category thing, I made the Cat:Settlements in.... ones because city doesnt properly describe the majority of places in Argentina and CAT:Cities in .... was all that was available. All of the articles in the city categories are contained in the settlement categories too so you could just burn the city categories. I'd actually prefer to stick with Settlements in.... as a name because Cities, towns and villages in .... is a bit long winded and means the same thing essentially. What do you say? LOL Thanks, that's a very encouraging recognition. I still don't know how to make this user (who is now using a sock puppet also LOL) that we can't write "Jodhha Bai was not the name of Akbar's wife" but only "according to several historians... Jodhaa Bai was not the name of Akbar's wife..."
The claim has no factual approval, and we can't regard historians' views as facts... He keeps adding his POV..

- Blof I really need you to comment on Talk:Jodhaa Akbar. Please do it for me. As you said, the claim is not factually approved, there are only historians' views, and we cannot regard them as facts.

- Sarvagnya's articles tagged as copywright. Ha Ha Ha. LOL, as you said, quite ironical!!! ;) There is not much going on these days as I have just been really busy with University. I think I am done by the end of this month and exams begin at the beginning of April. So there is roughly about a month left. After university is done, I will be able to come on Wikipedia more often but again not as much as I used to. I am not sure but I might be taking courses in the summer as well. Furthermore, it is about time that I start looking for a part-time job. Well, there are a lot of GA's in the pipeline, and the most important one being Kareena Kapoor. LOL, there are no surprises. However, I was also thinking of collaborating with you and Shahid in improving the pages of top Bollywood actors/actresses (Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Karisma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit). Shahid has so far improved the pages of Kajol and Salman Khan. After some minor edits and touches, Mukerji's page is also not far from being a GA. There are also other actors/actresses pages I want to improve (Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan). LOL, quite a lot of goals to accomplish on Wikipedia!!! --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 20:57, 1 March 2008
- Hey Blofeld, I needed to ask you a question! If I use a magazine scan from a fansite as a ref [to prove something on [Kareena] Kapoor's page], something along these lines, would that be okay?? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 01:53, 7 March 2008

[edit] Am I Here?
Barely. Yesterday I actually spend most of the day reading The Old Gods Waken by Manly Wade Wellman, which is basically like a better Stephen King novel, but shorter and with a rural North Carolina accent, and didn't actually hit the net at all, and today spent the beginning of the day working on archiving the Proposals page. I didn't want to interrupt myself in the process, considering it's an extensive cut-and-paste job, and waited until I finished with that to start anything else.
Recognizing that certain individuals, one whose name begins with an S comes to mind, have at best a weak grasp of the concept of civility in general, and certainly on wikipedia, yeah, it does help to get a little encouragement when dealing with such people who like piling on something else that begins with an s.
Regarding the 3-D maps, they do look very nice. I'm sure the Geography project in particular would love to be able to set up a few of those, particularly for the various areas where it can be used to indicate relative height or relationship to sea level. Regarding the idea of "interlinkable" photos, where one can click on an item in the photo to access an article, I can see how useful that would be, particularly with a few 3-D effects to indicate, among other things, former and extant national borders for a given area. It'd help a lot to be able to have a few such maps for the areas which have been under several governments over the years, and it would be great to be able to just hit with the mouse a few buildings in perhaps Manhattan and get the article on it, or anything similar for most of the cities, states, provinces, and whatever. And certainly seeing 3-D photos of perhaps Rainbow Bridge National Monument, the Grand Canyon, and others would communicate the subject much more effectively than "flat" pictures do. It might take some effort to get the photos in some cases, but I know the results would be worth it. John Carter (talk) 18:35, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Places
9000 separate named places in Eritrea is actually more than a bit scary, but I agree with you. The only things I might consider to add would be to try to tag the various articles with the relevant project's banner and maybe, if I can get some support on this idea, maybe try to work with the about to be proposed Featured Lists group at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Featured lists to get at least a few lists of these places up to FL status. That might help ensure that a few more people become aware of them, and should help their likelihood of getting attention as well. John Carter (talk) 19:02, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome Back Blofeld!
I'm so glad your back. The French communes are almost done, now we all are going to have to do the tough work of adding infoboxes and demographic info etc. But since you'r a lot better than me, I'll probably let you do that and I'll work on some other communes (probably Algeria). Few people know much about Paraguay, or, for that matter, much of the rest of the world, specifically including Africa, Asia, and the non-English speaking parts of it. It is stunning to realize just how much information there is out there, even on comparatively smallish countries. The only thing I guess I could add would be that, if you wanted to try to make a few as long as the 1500 character minimum, you'd probably have the biggest DYK count in history. John Carter (talk) 17:06, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Bot requests
Wouldn't be a bad idea. I know we've already had a few bots autopopulate articles on various congressmen. If it would be possible to find a public domain source with some information on some of them, that information could be added by the bot to the article like was done with the congressmen articles. It might be more than a bit controversial to some, and I would probably want to ensure that the articles are all tagged as well, but I say go for it. John Carter (talk) 20:02, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Burkina Faso
How about this? Same colour scheme as in my other maps. – Sadalmelik (talk) 17:37, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Sure, no problems. These maps are actually quite easy to make, if I have the up-to-date data for administrative divisions already. Especially Gambia is an awkward-shaped country, though - lets see how it turns out. – Sadalmelik (talk) 18:18, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- Well, Gambia is not really nice, but at least there should be more room for labels. The country is just so long and thin... – Sadalmelik (talk) 15:09, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- I changed the map for Tanzania, and created new templates {{Location map Lesotho}}, {{Location map Cape Verde}} and {{Location map Sao Tome and Principe}}. The one for Sao Tome and Principe is semi-useless though, as there is simply too much water. Cheers, – Sadalmelik (talk) 18:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

-
- I changed the Chad template, and there is now {{Location map French Guiana}} - it's not in relief, but I don't have the SRTM data on this computer. I'll see if I can do something nice during the weekend. I have actually done maps for South/Central America before, and also almost as many for Asia as for Africa (e.g. Buton).
-
-
-
- Regarding on your bot request – I don't think it's a good idea to use Fallingrain as source, as it's indiscriminate on what it contains. I think it simply includes all the populated place names from US gov. sources ( I might be wrong in this, though). It makes no distinction between villages with population of 100 and town with population of 100000. The problem then is that we end up with tens of thousands of new articles per country, only classified by first level administrative divisions. And that classification is not enough. That's why I suggested using government data instead, as it's hierarchical from the start (country level -> provinces -> counties -> towns or something similar). This hierarchy simply has to exist if one wants to find their way through tens of thousands of articles. And the hierarchy should be correct from the start, so government (official) sources are required. Wikipedia is big enough to ask and get the data, if it's not available on-line now.
-
-
-
- By the way, the altitudes in Fallingrain are not reliable. I did check a few when I started stubbing Malagasy communes. Generally I think they are correct within 100m or so... The worst case among those I checked was Ambalahonko - Fallingrain claims 321m[1] while SRTM shows 15m. I don't really understand how it can be that far off. – Sadalmelik (talk) 23:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Things are going well. I made those two articles because they were redlinks on an article I was working on (Barthélemy Boganda). I will remember to add the infobox, coordinates and image next time. In the future, could you simplify the infobox template? It's unnecessary to include the entire template. See my fix at Bobangui. I think for these small towns and villages, that's all you need in the infobox template. Thanks and keep up the good work! Nishkid64 (talk) 21:04, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks for the tip. I used [2] and [3] for Grimari. I'll check your sites out for future articles I write. Nishkid64 (talk) 21:10, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] AWB
Ever consider trying to do some things with Wikipedia:AWB? I think it'd make your job a lot easier.
I'm trying to get used to using it myself; give me a list of redlinked settlements and I'd be more than happy to work on it. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:20, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- It's actually pretty easy, and doesn't require any sort of programming knowhow; I figured out the program myself within a few minutes of opening it up. And God knows I'm not exactly a computer whiz.
- In any event, if you have a bunch of redlinks to fix up I'd be more than happy to feed them into the machine and create some stubs. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:27, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- I was thinking more along the lines of the French commune articles we were working on; take a list like that, and work from it, and that would lay plenty of groundwork. Having a "list of settlements in X district, Zambia", say, would make it easy to create plenty of stubs off of it saying, "Y is a settlement in [[X district]], Zambia" . Not a whole lot, perhaps, but it might make a good start. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:33, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- Tell you what. Let me make a few Azerbaijani stubs with AWB for you, to show you what I mean. Then you can decide whether or not you think that's what you'd want to be doing.
-
-
-
- And please don't think I'm trying to push you into something you don't want to be doing; I'm just trying to come up with ways to make your life a bit easier. Lord knows you do so much around here that you've earned a little rest. :) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- As you please. But don't be surprised to encounter a few handfuls of things I've done with the program from time to time. I just downloaded it; now all I need's an excuse to play with it for a while :)
-
-
-
-
-
- And may I say that the French commune articles are looking spiffing?
- I may?
- Good, because I just did. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:40, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
Oh, this is going to be an even more phenomenal project than it is now, once it gets a little more global breadth. The sheer magnitude of what's left to add in, though, boggles the mind.
That said, I think you can leave the French communes be for a while; others will be working on them, too, and I doubt anyone would fault you for turning your attention elsewhere. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:52, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Argo Aadli
An editor has nominated Argo Aadli, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Argo Aadli and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to say that, but it's a complete mess, see Anton Chekhov. I suggest you place {{db-author}} there to have it speedily deleted. Oth (talk) 11:56, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry again, I didn't mean to be rude. I only wanted to say this article is a "paras segadus". I still suggest deleting since Anton Tšehhov is the name in Estonian and this is an English encyclopedia and Chekhov is a Russian writer. Oth (talk) 12:20, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

You can always ask help at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Estonia. However, there is not much activity in recent times unfortunately. If you don't feel confident using Estonian language sources it is probably easier to resort to tasks that don't require it. As for your request, I will be very busy IRL for the next few days, then I'll see what I can do. Best wishes. Oth (talk) 14:47, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Chengji Jiang.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Chengji Jiang.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rossrs (talk) 11:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Mr. and Mrs. Iyer FAC
Hello friend, the article on the film Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (singlehandedly upgraded by User:Mspraveen) is up for Featured article candidacy here. Please express your opinion in the FAC. Have your say!!! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:25, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hello Blofeld! I'm doing good..just a tad busy with a few cinema articles. How about you? Whats keeping you busy these days? Thanks for your nice words about Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Dwaipayanc seems to be doing a fairly good job on the copyedits. I'm doing the same wherever I feel, I could. Thanks for your comments as well! Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 16:49, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- Good to know of your Wik-tivities :) Thanks again for your nice words. Well, I'm fan of good cinema, parallel cinema mostly and I'd rather work on these untouched, stable articles than the biggies. Well, I was going to put it up for a GA, but I paused to ask my favorite reviewer if he has the time to do so. I saw him active and so now I have it up for a GA nom. FA-class requires a good copy-edit and sadly, I feel that Mr. and Mrs Iyer is not yet ready for it. Anyways, let us see how it fares. For Dor, I'd be more than happy if you can copy-edit it and then it can be put up for an FA. Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 17:03, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ola! Dor is a GA now. I was surprised at the pace at which it was passed. No hitches whatsoever. Also surprised to see no objections really from the reviewer - something that I am not used to. :) Would you be interested in copy-editing it? I further think that this should be put up for a peer-review at WP:Films. Thoughts? Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 18:17, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] John Brim
Hello. I received the following e-mail from a fellow Wikipedia reader/editor, relating to the image attaching to John Brim's article.
- "Hello Mr. Bullamore, I read the wikipedia article of john brim. The article is ok but the picture is not John Brim. It's a photograph of Elmore James of the archive of Willie Dixon.
- If you're interested in a photograph of John Brim you can find one on the backside of the LP cover.
- Best regards, Simon Leinmueller"
Whilst I have recently significantly expanded and sub-edited the article (presumably that is why Simon Leinmuller contacted me), I believe that you posted the 'picture' of Brim.
Simon's comments seem to hold water as the Elmore James article uses basically the same image. Can you revisit this one (perhaps you have the album cover in question). Many thanks,

[edit] Cities, towns and villages in Sierra Leone
A tag has been placed on Cities, towns and villages in Sierra Leone, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. ✤ JonHarder talk 23:56, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Gabon departments
Good job with creating these articles, but just a heads up: per naming conventions you don't have to put the 'Deparment' on the end if just the name of the department (eg Etmiboue, Nbougou) isn't in use. :) Regards, AllynJ (talk | contribs) 13:43, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- I get what you mean, but in this case I think it's pretty clear through the template & the intro to the page. Not sure. I did the ones for Angola a while back and went for <Article Name> and added (province) where required, so I dunno. With redirects I would think it's ok, and obviously if there's somewhere else with the same name you can add (department) on the end, but as I say I'm not sure. [edit] Kitties
Kirill had previously referred to being the lead coordinator of the Military history project as being the equivalent of herding cats, so it's a bit of an in-joke. But that site does look reliable, and I think a bot could be worked to be able to extract the information from the tables for use in creating at least small stubs for, probably, all the places listed, including the airports . I don't myself have a clue what the aviation waypoints are supposed to be, but they might be notable as well. If it were me, I'd probably check with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation about that first, though. John Carter (talk) 17:08, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
==Global gazetteer==
I'd say that perfect. it gives enough context to not be an empty article and is formatted in a standard enough manner that a bot could read it. I'll support any bot that wants to add these. MBisanz talk 17:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'd only ask that you remember to ask the bot to automatically tag any articles it creates with the relevant geographical project banner, so that the projects will know the articles exist. John Carter (talk) 17:14, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Bots have automatically created articles before, like several short articles on US congressmen based on the public domain biographies the US government maintains, so it's not exactly a new idea. It might be required to indicate which articles already exist, though. Knowing not to create an article might be one of the few things it isn't capable of for all I know. John Carter (talk) 17:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Well Ram-bot did all US counties and cities, but it was smaller back then, so less chance of doubling up. I'd imagine that could be hand-sorted later. And the region info is probably more detailed and standardized than we'd normally find. I don't code, but I'd try User:Snowolf or just another Bot request. Maybe an AN post since this is a Big Thing. MBisanz talk 17:25, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Well bots work off task databases as best as I can understand them. So we'd need to download the html files from that site (I know there are tools that do this), and then extract the data. I suspect it could be ported to some sort of database and rules using delimiters and what-not could fix geo-issue (like we fixed the ISBN issue). If only Ram-man were still around here. User:Coren seems to know some webscanning stuff. User:Dinojerm also apparently does web to wiki translation. User:The Anome seems to know geo-coding. MBisanz talk 17:44, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I consider the several freely available geospatial databases (GADM, Digital Chart of the World, and more) superior to Fallingrain and similar sources. I would not use even GADM or DCW as base for article creation, as I believe for most part they represent the status on mid-1990's, and of course there is not population data. The benefit of those sources is that they are hierarchical from top to bottom.
Let's take Mozambique for example. There is a database available in Moz. gov. site with the size given as 330 MB. How much information is there? I don't frankly know, as the download is slow and fails for me, but judging from the size, it has to be fairly detailed. And no, we should not use that file for anything at the moment, as Mozambique is currently still compiling the results from 2007 census, so a better source is on the horizon. The local governments need a lot of data for their internal planning – coordinates (possibly even with GPS coordinates), populations, details about health care and education, some economic indicators etc. For them, this is vital information. Most developing countries have statistical agencies and map making divisions, and I strongly feel their data is the one the bots should be run on. In most cases this data is not available on the web, simply because internet is not cheap for developing countries and these databases can be large. I would be suprised if Mozambique had added all their available information to that database. And remember: this is Mozambique. The situation for richer parts of Africa or Central-Asia is likely to be better. Another example: GeoHive gives population data of Malagasy districts citing the Malagasy Statistical Office (or whatever it was called, in French). I have not been able to find that data on Malagasy webpages, so either it existed at some point and has now been pulled from the web, or GeoHive has gotten the information from the office directly. Wikipedia is big, much bigger than any of the gazetteer sites. We can ask for data, and expect to have it.
I'm repeating myself here, but I do feel it's much better to ask the local governments what they have, and then run a bot on that data. There could workgroup or task force created for this purpose, with a clean, professional looking page to contact the authorities and organise the work. – Sadalmelik (talk) 09:14, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- One reservation comes to mind, unfortunately. I've heard several times that the assessment bot is already facing regular problems with the half-million articles of the biography project. The million settlements in China, and probably similarly large numbers for Russia, India, maybe Bolivia, and lord knows what else, might create a situation where regular assessment updates are no longer practically possible. Also, on a possibly related point, I'm not sure if you've ever seen that we have right now have wikipedias in over 250 languages, as per Wikipedia:Wikimedia wikis. It might be possible to have the bot autocreate articles in every one of those languages, if we could get someone to write the "base" text for the standard article. I think that this might be very useful for many/most of those wikis, as it would help them get a series of "base" pages for all parts of the world, if they want it. Maybe the best thing to do at this point might be to have one of us create a page in userspace regarding the proposals, and what we think can and should be done with them, and ask for input from various other parties before starting in earnest, particularly regarding assessment and interlanguage links.
- Also, if you haven't noticed, the next wikimania is scheduled for Alexandria, Egypt. If your passport is in order, I can't help but imagine that you might even be able to get funding to attend. John Carter (talk) 15:43, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Wasn't intending to, because, stupid American that I am, I don't have a passport right now and don't think I'll be able to get a replacement in time, given our love of bureaucracy over here. I think Alexandria was chosen because for the symbolic value. Having said that, if I can get the passport through in time, I'd love to go there.
- Regarding some of the difficulties you mentioned, the problem of duplicate names is a very real one, particularly in former colonies. I do think it would be useful to at least try to discuss with a lot of the other languages the possibility of helping them get a few basic articles, because I think a lot of them still don't even have articles on all the individual extant countries out there. And, unfortunately, there is always the real chance that at some point the smaller articles might be deleted or merged into another article anyway. And this isn't taking into account how Oleg and his assessment bot would react to seeing all those new articles out there. A few ideas come to mind, but they are still rough ones. One, at the minimum, we could create lists of settelemtns in wherever for every country, region, subdivision, etc., listing the reliable information from the gazetteer you found and keeping each of the locations as a red link. A lot of these could be fairly easily translated into at least several of the other languages fairly easily. Then, after they're created and we see just how many places out there have seemingly identical names, go on to create the individual articles on all of those places where there's sufficient cause to think that they won't qualify as deletable, or maybe even all of them right out. But I do think that we would be best advised to at least check with a few of the more established editors regarding any reservations they might have, particularly Oleg and his assessment bot, and give them at least a bit of warning so that they can adjust to the new situation. Also, I would like to check with the interlanguage people to see if there's any way we can get the interlanguage links color-coded for the quality assessments of the articles in the various languages. I think that would be really useful in several cases. John Carter (talk) 16:09, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: countering systematic bias
Whilst I agree with you that any number of small setllements in North America do not deserve recognition that does not make it a good reason for the new article to exist. TO claim it should exist on the basis that similar articles shouldn't if anything aids the case for deletion. As you have reoved the prod I will proceed to AfD. BigHairRef | Talk 23:53, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Having read your suggested page it appears to add no weight to your claim, the box at the top only suggests that thay may be notable, not that they automatically are, even so it is still not a policy, merely a suggested one. BigHairRef | Talk 00:01, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- As you reccommend I will so waste my time. I don't have any preconceptions, but your initial message that the area is like any small town in America (which you said you didn't believe worthy of articles) suggested to me you were only including it as you wanted to "counter[...] systematic bias" BigHairRef | Talk 00:09, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Lequaidesbrumes.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Lequaidesbrumes.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 00:13, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] re: flickr
Hey Blofeld, could you possibly give me the user's flickr username - I can look better then. :) ~ Riana ⁂ 12:29, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ah Ok, I see the problem with these flickr agreements. The problem is that none of these users have agreed to specific licenses. One thing you can do is ask them to send you a statement saying 'I release <name of image> under the GFDL license'. Another thing you can do is to ask them to change the licensing on Flickr itself to CC-by-2.0 or CC-by-SA-2.0. If you are busy, I can contact these users myself (I have your list of users in my inbox, so that shouldn't take me too long). Cheers, ~ Riana ⁂ 12:38, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

re Joshua Kucera - I've sent him the following email.
Hi Joshua, I was told (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Riana#New_agreement) that a fellow Wikipedian, [your name redacted], has spoken to you and you have agreed to relicense your photos so that Wikipedia can use them. First of all, thank you! Secondly there are 2 ways you could actually go about making this relicensing concrete. The first option is to go to your flickr preferences and relicense your images there to Creative Commons Attribution or Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike. These are free licenses which Wikimedia projects allow. Your other option is to send an email to permissions@wikimedia.org stating that you are releasing your photographs under either one of the above licenses, or the GNU Free Documentation License. This is entirely your call. :) Thanks, Riana
I think that's sufficient, and you could use that as a boilerplate for any permissions you may wish to receive in the future. Another helpful page is located here. PS: Archive your talkpage! It's getting loooong! :) Cheers, ~ Riana ⁂ 14:45, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Thank you for uploading Image:Tancredi Pasero.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 15:24, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for adding the images in Varanasi. They were causing the article formatting to go "CRAZY!!!". The article already has a lot of images in it. So I removed them. I was going to reply you but nature called me :p.
Anyway... if you look, I have replaced an old image with one of the images that you uploaded. One of the other two images were in the article for a really long time but was replaced a long time ago (so there is no need to upload it again). The third image in the "Transportation" section was not aesthetically pleasing, and as I said too much for an article which is low on content and high on images.
Sorry though... I hope to incorporate the images once we have some text to accompany them. --æn↓þæµß¶-ŧ-¢(I prefer replying to each other's talk pages.) 23:09, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] World Gazetteer
Hey I heard you didn't yet get to Algeria and Sudan. Since we know all the communes of Algeria that one's out. As for Sudan well we don't. However, I have discovered this great site called The World Gazetteer for population statistics. I have copypasted the sudan entries (the top 124 largest alphabetically) from there to User:Blofeld of SPECTRE/Missing Settlements/Sudan. I don't think its a copyright violation because Its a table but hey, you can fix it. Editorofthewiki 22:41, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry I have to work on Algerian communes for now but I would be glad if you do it. Take notice, however: Some of these towns have articles under differant spellings. For example, Umm Durman is Omdurman, a pretty well written article compared to some other African ones. (see Libreville and I'm sure ther's more.) Africa is the most neglected continent of all in terms of articles on towns. That is, beside Antartica, but the penguins don't have official statistics. :) Editorofthewiki 23:05, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

In Karnataka, divisions hardly hog as much limelight as districts and taluks do. Divisions are composed of districts which in turn have detailed Wikipedia articles of their own. [edit] AfD nomination of Bura-Chaty
An editor has nominated Bura-Chaty, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bura-Chaty and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 15:59, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Algeria
I'm going to take the create-now-expand-later approach to Algerian communes based on the fact we have over a thousand without articles, similar to France except there was ~35,000. Tell me what you think. Editorofthewiki 22:45, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- That's okay. I simply don't have the time to do it the log way. Most of the countries you've been working with such as Kyrgystan have only several hundred known villages while Algeria has 1,500. I'll be happy if you get the maps and population from Municipalities of Algeria. I will after I get around to creating all the stubs. Editorofthewiki 23:06, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Argentine films and more
Hey amigo. Are you still conqering the world? Bet you are. I've been meeting some very super people these days (one even sent me a DVD of an old film we both admire), and a couple of nasty ones; probably my bad, as how I've reacted towards the nasty ones. I've always considered you my mentor on Wiki. I've got you on my watch list (not this page, per se, but in the past as well) so I know of all the situations you get involved in. How do you handle it all? After reading the comments on this page...man alive. I guess I'm too soft skinned? I may be taking a lower profile, for a bit. Regroup, and all of that. Other than Skier, cool cat, but I don't want to bother him all the time... do you know of another Admin? I can use a pep talk.... Your amigo from Southern Calif. Oh yeah about Argentine lists, I'm not good at that....what I'll do as I chill is work ONLY on Argentine films, and the ones you've started....much more work than film noir, the research is never ending and I think difficult because it takes so long...film noir is so easy, but I've build a solid number of films with good C-plus articles (see User:Luigibob/Filmnoir).... [edit] Silly request
I know this is a strnage request, but my graphics talents are nil. Do you know of, or could you acquire, an image containing, say, a book, CD, DVD, television, radio, and a theatre ticket? We need an image for the Fictional Series project banner, and that seems to me to be the most inclusive way of indicating its scope. John Carter (talk) 16:37, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan
Sorry for delays... Kazakhstan is easy, but Kyrgyzstan proved to be a bit trickier. The trouble with that is all these enclaves and exclaves - the border data I normally use for drawing the national borders does not show them at all. I did find something that includes the larger enclaves, but that border data then draws the western border twice - effectively the west border of Kyrgyzstan does not match with the east border of Uzbekistan exactly, so the line marking the border is thicker than the lines elsewhere. It should be straightforward to fix that. – Sadalmelik (talk) 18:31, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Kyrgyzstan is now finished, too. Not all the enclaves are visible, but I think it's ok for use as locator map. They need to be kept simple in any case. I noticed the map of Kazakhstan has an unrelated problem, though: the Aral Sea has not looked like that for 50 years. I don't think I can fix that, though... Again, sorry this took so long! – Sadalmelik (talk) 19:11, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oops - I'm becoming confused about the order I need to run the commands! I uploaded a new version, but do not seem to be able to purge the cache.... I have done a few districts here and there, and will do them all eventually. They are still easy to stub. The real problem, at least for me, is Districts of Madagascar. There are now several hundred links to it, and the only thing I can write about it is the list of districts. I guess that will have to do, though, there is not that much information in Regions of Madagascar either. – Sadalmelik (talk) 19:36, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I can make (or rather modify) those raion maps, no problems. I'll upload them sometime during the weekend - I think I'm going to have a look how those image upload scripts work. I already have 100+ maps for Malagasy districts ready to be uploaded. – Sadalmelik (talk) 16:57, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

OK - the raion maps are done and added to articles. I also made locator maps for Sudan and Western Sahara (shown in the gallery below). Bewarned, though, that the regular editors of Western Saharan and Moroccan articles tend to edit war over maps. The most recent episode that I'm aware is here - this looks like an image used in stub templates. I would expect, that once the Moroccan location map is widely used, there will be an edit war over what map is shown. I'm not really sure whether the Western Sahara would attract similar attention, though. Cheers, – Sadalmelik (talk) 15:25, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Towns in Kyrgyzstan
Hey, I noticed you working on Kyrgyzstan as well. I've been there a few times, and I can read some Russian and decypher Kyrgyz cyrillic. I've been looking for an accurate list of municipalities, but it doesn't seem to exist. There is a well defined number of municipalities/places with a local government though. Kyrgyz wikipedia (I can't read Kyrgyz, but I can read numbers, and I know some words) has numbers of cities (шаар/shaar), urban-type settlements (шаар тибиндеги айыл/shaar tibindegi ayyl), municipalities (айыл кеңеши/ayyl kengeshi) and villages (айыл/ayyl) in every district article, for instance ky:Баткен областы. I have found a list of cities (the ones marked "city" in the List of cities in Kyrgyzstan I updated yesterday), but the rest may be troublesome (the urban-type settlements might be relatively easy to find, Batken oblast even has an English webpage that names cities and uts'es). Note that many spelling/romanization variants are possible, both for the Russian (I think most of the fallingrain names you used are Russian) and Kyrgyz names. Something to do after Germany and France ;-) Markussep Talk 16:26, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

- I think you're right about Nookat and Iski-Naukat. "Iski" means old (compare Turkish eski), and the shift from "au" to "oo" is common (alatau/alatoo, Daraut-Kurgan/Daroot-Korgon). Probably Naukat is the Russified version of the Uzbek or Kyrgyz name, and Nookat the new Kyrgyz name. I'll merge them to Nookat. Markussep Talk 17:33, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] French communes
There's already a post on the talk page of WikiProject French communes about maybe using the France template at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject French communes#Project banner question. No one responded, so I guessed that the project wanted to use an entirely separate banner. Having said that, if there is an interest in using the France banner, I can try to work up something today to create assessment parameters for the French communes project in it. John Carter (talk) 16:28, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Re: French communes
Yvelines isn't the only département that is badly served in the English Wikipedia! Unfortunately, I'm devoting most of my "great translation skills" (thanks for the compliment) to French castles at the moment, and there are a great many of them to get through. When I finish a castle article I tend to have a go at the relevant commune article if it needs some work, as I did with Montrichard yesterday, but, to be honest, I simply don't have time to systematically take on communes as well as castles. Well, not yet anyway. (Incidentally, just took one Yvelines commune at random - Orsonville: there was no link to the French Wikipedia!) Emeraude (talk) 16:31, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Sadly, another editor has recently been pushing an alternate opinion on certain India-related issues I don't know anything about one way or another, and Amar got blocked for reverting that editor's edits. Yeah, it should. It should definitely be included in the Signpost, and it might even be reasonable to try to add some sort of top of the page template like we currently have for the Wikimania Call for Participation, although I'm not sure how to do that. But mentioning in at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom/Suggestions, and maybe suggesting a template like that be used there, would certainly be called for. Yeah, and I'll start adding them now. There were a few people indicating interest in Umm al-Quwain and Ajman, so I added all the locations from there, and then started on Sharjah, where there wound up being a lot more, so I chickened out for a while there. The articles also give a bit more reason for the projects on those two areas, as well. I'll go back and add everything now. You know how it is, you start something, messages come in about something else, so you stop for a while, and then have trouble remembering what it was you were doing in the first place. [edit] You keep asking me
I accidentally left out the French wikilink because I mostly copied one from there and replaced each link with {{subst:PAGENAME}}. I frankly forgot about adding that one until I was halfway through because the French don't link to their page. Also, it does strike me as odd that you only add fr and nl on the articles. Anyway, since you keep asking me about this I decided it is time to answer. Editorofthewiki 14:04, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Coordinators
I think the purpose of having the "lead" coordinator is, in effect, basically just saying "the buck stops here". Also, the lead coordinator is supposed to be the person, according to the MILHIST example, the one doing, as it were, most of the coordinating, with the others either being more focused in a particular field or "helping out". And I'm working on the France banner now. Elections are done, like has happened with Films, so that people who aren't even remotely qualified don't appoint themselves and later screw things up, I think. By the way, I've just proposed a similar set up at the Biography project. There, that group really could use some coordinated management. John Carter (talk) 16:10, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] French castles
You asked: "Isn't there a category for chateaus or castles in france". Châteaux, yes. Castles? There used to be. It was a category called Castles in France, which sat quite nicely beside Category:Castles in Italy and Category:Castles in Belgium and Category:Castles in Spain etc etc etc. But some bright spark decided to delete it and a bot was then used to recategorise 175 articles about castles into Category:Châteaux in France. This was done without consulting the Wiki Projects on castles or France. The justification was that the French word château could mean castle or palace or stately home etc! I objected after the event, and attempted to have it reversed. A small group then came up with the on the grounds of 'consistency' (i.e. different from every other part of the world!). 'Fortified French châteaux' is absolute nonsense; as you are no doubt aware, in English a castle is a castle and a château is a palace/home, and separate categories are needed to diffentiate the two for an English reader seeing the title Château de Somewhere. A 'fortified château' is, presumably, a building constructed as a palace and later fortified, and, of course, there are none. In the meantime, alone of all the countries and regions of the world, there is, according to Wikipedia categorisation, no such thing as a castle in France!!! Emeraude (talk) 17:40, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
The discussions will still exist somewhere on Wikipedia. Perhaps it's time to recreate the category, remove the castles from the Châteaux category, and repopulate castles. Meanwhile, List of castles in France does the job. Emeraude (talk) 17:49, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
It's obvious to me. It was obvious to my son from the time he was 5 or 6: driving through France he waould say "There's a castle" or "There's a châteaux". I did bring it up at categories for discussion - that's where the decision was made on 'fortified French châteaux'. Emeraude (talk) 17:55, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

- I've not been really active as before, as you knoe, I enjoy my time here --- The sea is bluer than ever. But I'm quite proud of new articles like Sameer (lyricist) and Anees Bazmee..

But above all, I just can't wait for Zinta's releases in May, especially her arty films. I also look forward to seeing some screenshot from heaven on earth. - I will definitely take it to FAC soon, but I first need a break and do other things (I also cleaned up the Akshay Kumar article, expanded Manisha Koirala's one etc). I want to do other things now - it's too much for me to revolve around the same article all the time. Now you tell me, what's (for example) wrong with "Zinta's first release"? Does this soubd as if she is the one who released the film? Shahid • Talk2me 21:24, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Divisions of Sudan
Oh bugger... those regions are not current. It seems Sudan started with 8 provinces, increased slowly to 18 (which I'm showing), cut back to 9 states before deciding more was better and reorganizing into 26 states. I'm not using any commercial software for map making, so basically I have to use the data which is available freely. I tried to search whether I could fix the map, but could not find anything usefull (=current) data... I'll have to nuke the map, as it's too misleading (of course historical maps have their uses too, but not under the current name Sudan_Locator.png). [edit] Cinema template
Hey, how's it going? I think that it would probably be a good idea to have a hide option since the template is getting really long. I'd recommend bringing it up first at the talk page of WP:FILMS first in case there may be some opposition with valid rationales. Good idea though. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 23:19, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of Estonian actors
My first response on seeing the list in question, "H*** s***", is not one I am very likely to repeat in full, because I very rarely use that sort of language. I think I saw six or so blue links in the entire list? Oh, well, at least we can say that someone has a lot of ambition for this field. But, if you wanted to, well, trim the list a little, :), it could certainly be indicated that many of the red-letter names have not demonstrated their notability, I don't think anyone could object. It would trim the list rather a lot, but that might not be a bad thing. John Carter (talk) 20:46, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- I was under the impression that you had found the list in question as one already extant, not had created it yourself, because I've seen several "wish list" articles like that one elsewhere. I have no doubts about the notability of the subjects however, as I know how you check through all the names before you add them. I wish that the Estonian wikipedia at [11] had more articles than it does, which right now seems to be about 47,000 pages. If you knew which of any of them have articles there already, though, if you can read the language better, creating links to those pages might not hurt. Certainly, Wikipedia:WikiProject Estonia could be notified of the existence of the list, and the rather appalling dearth of blue links on it. Personally, I've always found that I have a lot fewer reservations about creating an article that already has red links than in creating one on my own. And, having seen the article in question, I cannot help but commend you on the work that went into it. Having said that, though, providing a list of references at the bottom indicating what sources were used compiling the list would certainly not be amiss. If you have the capacity to generate any other such lists for other countries, I think we wouldn't object to seeing them. And it does open up the gates for "article creation" projects for several projects. I know a few projects already have their own red-link lists, and it wouldn't hurt for others to have them as well. John Carter (talk) 21:08, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- One other option for all the geographic projects is to create in their project space a list of missing articles. Many projects could do with such lists, believe me. One problem a lot have is the believe that they've gotten everything done already. A little reminder that they've got a lot left to do would probably help stimulate activity in some of them. So Wikipedia:WikiProject Estonia/Missing articles, or whatever project is in question, might not be a bad idea to create if it doesn't already exist. John Carter (talk) 21:22, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- Well, two examples out there are probably Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Missing articles and Wikipedia:WikiProject Saints/Missing articles. The red links to be added to any of them can be added however one might want to, although User:Seth Ilys/Seth's Massive List of South Dakota Things gives an idea of how to lay out such a page for particular types of articles. John Carter (talk) 21:42, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- I know. Remember, up until I added a few, we had only one article on Umm al-Qawain, the main article itself. Our coverage of the parts of the planet less popular in the English-speaking world is frankly pathetic. I am more than a bit surprised by the lack of content regarding Vienna, though. I would have thought the other Germanics among us would have added more to it. I guess that's probably due to the Austria Project's lack of activity lately, though. John Carter (talk) 22:30, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:DopravnýpodnikBratislava.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
[edit] Mining in Africa
The articles look good. The idea of a series on mining in Africa sounds to me like a very one. You might want to tell the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mining about the articles. Also, for what it's worth, the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Moldova has now been created, leaving, I think, the only independent state on the planet without a dedicated group Mongolia, where that work group covers both independent and Chinese Mongolia. John Carter (talk) 17:06, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- The other assessments and countries will probably be added to the banner as soon as I'm finished with the directory, and adding the other newer projects, like Bermuda, to the other relevant banners. That'll give time to figure out what to do with the ethnic states of Russia, as well. As soon as that's done, though, I think there will probably be more work done over in that part of the world as well. John Carter (talk) 17:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I never said that the subject was worth an article. I tagged the Harry Heard with {{hoax}} because I realized that it was not true. I will like to provide you a suggestion, you are doing good job in many of the templates. But may I suggest you that you remove the pictures added in the templates. [edit] Liberia
Hi. Yes, unfortunately the digital divide, WP:systemic bias and all that makes the coverage of many parts of the worlds really poor. Liberia isn't really my area of expertise, I just created that article because I saw the news about the census on BBC News and I thought that the agency that is organizing the first census since 1984(!) definitely deserved an article. But sure, I'll join the project. Why not? :) By the way, I'd like to take this chance to say that I've seen you around Wikipedia (how could I not?) and I want to congratulate you for the amazing work I think you've done. If we had more of you (ever considered cloning?) I can't even imagine what kind of encyclopaedia this would be. ;) Cattus talk 18:18, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Some really nice photos on Gambia. Prose is good for information, but a picture really makes a big difference in getting a feel of the place, it "takes you there", so to speak. By the way, that country has the most interesting geography I've seen, it's basically a strip of land following the path of a river! The Mozambique maps would be great, there is already this one, maybe it will be helpful. Cattus talk 20:24, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
78?! My country is not much smaller and only has around 30 protected areas. Cattus talk 20:43, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

- You're welcome! By the way, I'm really glad you turned blue all the red links on this template I had created long ago. Something I should have done myself (blame my Portuguese laziness). I will now add to some of those stubs some pics I have of them. Expansion, yay! :-) Best regards, Húsönd 22:30, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sure, count on me! This website has all the information about the Portuguese Protected Areas by the way. I'll use it for expanding the stubs. Regards, Húsönd 22:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Admin tools
I have to tell you that it's high time you understand you are the most indicated editor to become an admin. Why don't you wanna become an admin? Well..
Apart from that, didn't you tell me that you had admin tools? You have a rollback, no? Isn't it sufficient? Or it's only for vandalism reversions? Shahid • Talk2me 15:01, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- So why not becoming an admin? Wouldn't you like to become an admin so that you can make whatever you want? I really think it's the best option. You have been offered adminship so many times, I think it's the perfect time to accept the offer. Shahid • Talk2me 15:15, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- So what? And why are you so sure? Every editor has his tiffs with other ones. And every editor has his enemies LOL!! But as Churchill said once, "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." !!! There is nothing wrong in attempting. Shahid • Talk2me 15:30, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

- You have nothing to lose... And you have so many editors who appreciate you - your award page is FULL!!! You are very active here, it's obious that there will be some editors who sign their oppose, but there will be thousand times more editors to support you, and back them up. And everybody knows that you would never utilise your admin powers if you became an admin. Shahid • Talk2me 15:36, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

- WOW that's a great developement!!! I knew that it would happen sooner or later... Now you have a great way to shup up others' mouths LOL... Listen I'm taking a short Wikibreak of one week now... I'm gonna have a short trip over Australia... Shahid • Talk2me 19:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] UAE
What makes you think that!? :) Actually, spent most of yesterday there. I decided to not include the wadis and wells, as I'm not at all sure they qualify for inclusion, but the mountains, islands, and any inhabited places they mention the global gazeteer didn't I wrote down. John Carter (talk) 16:32, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Library. Meant I spent most of yesterday in the library with the US Defense Department's gazeteer on the UAE. Sorry about the confusion. They've even got a separate gazeteer on Andorra. What all it might include, I haven't a clue. I didn't look at that one though. John Carter (talk) 16:36, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Slovenia
I could set up the Europe banner for separate assessments for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia. An example of the outcome is at User talk:John Carter/Europe banner. Granted, the categories would have to be created too, but would that work? John Carter (talk) 17:23, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Mauritania should work now. There was a misspelling in the banner earlier. Regarding your going for adminship, what thought is required. RUN. I have real trouble seeing you not being confirmed. The only thing I would add is that they will ask you what particular admin functions you see yourself doing, and they'll want a good answer. Other than that, I can't see any reasonable reservations. John Carter (talk) 20:17, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean by "Council" stuff, so I can't answer that directly. But, in general, maybe just saying you'd help close XfDs, maybe help with speedy deletions once in a while, etc., should be enough. Just indicating that there is something you specifically intend to do with the admin tools once you become an admin is pretty much what they're looking for, along with some demonstration of having been involved in such matters before. I've nominated a lot of MfDs, so I already know a little about that and could say I was invovled there. But closing XfDs, or protecting pages as requested, doing speedy deletions, etc., fairly regularly, if not entirely often, is what they're looking for. Basically, proof that you're requesting adminship for something other than egoboo. John Carter (talk) 21:58, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Ride Him,Cowboyposter.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. [edit] Re: Battle of Valle di Cadore
The topic is perhaps of some interest to me—although the article happens to be incorrect, since the battle took place before the war—but I don't think I have any substantive details on the battle itself in any of my usual sources, so I doubt that I'll be writing a full-blown article on it anytime soon. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.
This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. I agree that the individual probably doesn't warrent an article (per WP:BIO and WP:NN) but being a record holder is an assertion of importance (even if it isn't a very good one) so the article is not - in my opinion - an A7 candidate. Guest9999 (talk) 21:32, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] CSBot and stubs
Hey there.
You've attracted the attention of CSBot because of the very high similarity between the stubs; they get tagged because there is no way for the bot to know those aren't cut-and-paste copies (which are a copyright problem because they loose the contrib history).
Just removing the tag does the trick. CSBot doesn't delete anything. — Coren (talk) 15:40, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

- Negotiating agreements is probably even a bit beyond the average admin, unfortunately. What we'd probably have to do first is ensure that all the sources listed at Wikipedia:Public domain image resources on the subject are exhausted first. If we can verify that there aren't any useful images there, that would help a lot. But I think everyone would just about demand that those be gone through first. [edit] cantons of France
Hi there,
if you're planning to create navbars for French cantons, this would be helpful: de:Kategorie:Vorlage:Navigationsleiste Kantone in Département. French wikipedia doesn't have navbars for cantons. Dickeybird has created articles for all cantons of Somme. For the other departments, nearly all cantons are missing. I just created Canton of Le Catelet (Aisne), and there's a few more scattered around, see the subcategories of Category:Cantons of France. There's an awful lot of cantons BTW: 4,032 according to Cantons of France. Markussep Talk 15:47, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Can you retrieve the Thunderball diving apparatus image?
I am asking again. We'd better remove Bond's face (Adds hardly anything informative per WP:IMAGES) or Largo (this one's in Domino's article) as the GA reviewer pointed at excess nonfree use. Ultra! 16:14, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
- But the boat image will be deleted! I would prefer Largo and Domino. Diverting these pics to character pages is an alternative and a GoldenEye peer review favours stunts or any action scenes to explain plot better. The boat is good enough. Ultra! 16:22, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Spam in NIVEA Soft
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on NIVEA Soft, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because NIVEA Soft is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.

Okay I certainly do think that you are entitled to state your case - this is precisely why I asked for it in the first place (in terms of license to speak about its colors, it is irrelevant to me that you originally crated it.) If you want to me to change the color of the text, that would be fine with me, but 1.) white text may not print and 2.) colors for links other than browser defaults (usually blue) are confusing. Both of those guidelines are web usability no-nos. I appreciate what you're saying about maintaining a culturally-significant colo(u)r scheme, so how about one that includes the red hue of the robes, but does not have blue text on top of that color, as it will invariably difficult for me to read (I am assuming that my experience is not simply my own, but is shared by other users); does that sound sufficient? [edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Choroid plexus papilloma.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Choroid plexus papilloma.jpg.
Thank you. Visor (talk) 09:56, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey thanks man, I really don't know what that means or anything but it is welcome. You play guitar too I see. Go to the states man, LA, right after christmas, boxing day sales are intense. I bought a gibson les paul for 2700 dollars
MARKED DOWN FROM 5000 BUCKS. That is a very good deal unless I am very much mistaken. What sort of music do you play? Blues? Rock? Metal? etc. Doctor Will Thompson (talk) 12:24, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
You are pretty much the coolest person I have ever met, in real lfe, or on wikipedia. I watched the whole directors cut of woodstock. I am listening to The End by The Doors right now. - Love the cream, hate the pink floyd. I love the Beatles, and I hate more than hate metal, like all this crapp emo crap that has come out recently. I just got back from San Fran, it was great, so much history within a city. I just got into the rolling stones about four days ago. I was in a store and I said, "blow it (I didn't use one of those words, which one was it?) I am going to buy a stones album. I bought beggars banquet, and went back the next day and bought 4 others. - Good Day Sunshine is my favourite beatles song at the moment. I like the cheesiness of it. I also like how their next album, and even some songs on Revolver (album) were so influenced by pot, shrooms, mescaline, and acid, and they coud produce something as simple, catchy, and cheesy as good day sunshine. I also love Sympathy For The Devil, and yes, I am the walrus is a great example of how great drugs are. I want to transfer to Harvard to finish my masters and maybe do my doctorate. But instead I will probably just get drunk and punch a tree, which is what I usually do in those situations. At the moment I am learning the slide solo for What Is and What Should Never Be by Led Zeppelin. Which I know is not the hardest solo, but I have rarely played slide, so I have to start somewhere, what are you playing at the moment? And have you heard a song called Itchycoo Park? Doctor Will Thompson (talk) 12:49, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

- I added some new comments right before you replied to me, I mentioned Itchycoo Park etc. My history teacher from year 10 was a mad hippie. He was a such a mad guy. At one point we were doing the civil rights movement, he said "Will, go outside and play the blues on your acoustic guitar (which I had with me)". It was great, I love the blues. When I was in year 11, he asked my band to play blues in front of the whole of year 10, which consists of about 160 people, I had my band to back me up. DO you like the doors, or do you find them too dark and uninviting? Doctor Will Thompson (talk) 13:03, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

- The Who are the shit, I love the who like Ilove breathing, it keeps me alive. The Doors are some of my all time favourites, Morrison's voice was great. Have you heard Tommy by the who, it is fantastic. Moon was a better drummer than I think even Bonham, who was the best. Hendrix was great, you have heard the drumming on Fire I can guess? How good is that, I reckon that is some of the best druming in rock and roll history. Bob Dylan was great too. My history teacher took a boat out to alcatraz in the 60s, 69 I think it was, with a group of friends at night. They all dropped acid and they told him he was a demon or posessed or something, and he jumped off a cliff into the water below. Have you heard of a band Called Quicksilver Messenger Service? They are fantastic too. Doctor Will Thompson (talk) 13:15, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh Yeh I came back today... Had to be shortened.... How are you? Shahid • Talk2me 14:04, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- Well I'm still not sure if it's completely prepared... See what happened with the Che Guevara article... How come an article of 130+ KBs has now only half of the original FA version, is now in terrible conditions and is also listed pn WP:FAC??... Shahid • Talk2me 14:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- That's great... Listen, I think the Madhubala article has immense potential. She is considered to be a legend and one of the best actresses of Hindi cinema ever. One editor who was not really aware of Wikipedia's policies, such as inline citations, expanded it substatially, relying on books. It is exetremely well written, and the editor listed all the books in the refs section... What do you think? Shahid • Talk2me 15:17, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

- What?????? Ha ha ha ha!!! I love films of all times!!! Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis!!!!! Awara, Shree 420, Mother India, Dhool Ka Phool, Phool Aur Patthar, Arzoo, Arandhana, Anupama etc., are some of my all time favourite films... The list is endless... Also good to note that during 1998-2001 I really disliked new Bollywood films because they seemed very stupid and idiotic to me. During this period I was watching only old classics of the 50s-80s and to some extent the 90s... Only then I began watching new films more often, and I started watching new releases weekly in cinemas in Mumbai. BTW, during this period, I noticed Zinta with films like Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and Dil Hai Tumhara... Regards, Shahid • Talk2me 15:38, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

- Hey Blof... I wanted to ask you, can't there be an image rationale for images of yeasteryear actors/actresses. For example, see this image. I've added a rationale, and a tag was still added by some user, which is pathetic. Isn't this image considred to be replaceable? Shahid • Talk2me 14:00, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

- No problems, have a great day!!! Only two things.
- 1) So, in other words, when it comes to yesteryear actresses who are now relatively old, and there are not replaceable free images of their young days and past career, we can add images?
- 2) I just wanted to tell you that all these image templates you created, a user has added a special tag to all of them {{Filmr|article name|source}}... The problem is that when we use this spacial tag, it always shows the DVD/poster template, whether it's a template for a screenshot or an image for a deceased person... - Blof, when you're here, please help me with the images. The problem is that images are being tagged anyway. And I'm not sure how to write it because I'm not an expert, but as one who is knowledgeable regarding the issue, maybe you can help with some rationale (ie Babita) (her image is from 1967!!!! As of nor, I've added another FU rationale with a commentary). Your explanation to me was brilliantly written, but apparently a FU rationale doesn't suffice for these images to be featured on the actors' articles. To make it possible, I guess we can create some template which will explain that these images are irreplaceable, old, cannot be replaced by freely licensed ones, and actresses are old, and these images illustrate the part in their life which the article discusses. I really need your help. Please reply when you're back. Regards, Shahid • Talk2me 16:55, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

- Image:Waheeda Rehman.jpg is an example of an image that is still tagged. Image:Zeenat aman in her young days.jpg too. I think we can create a template that will explain all of what I told you in the above message. Shahid • Talk2me 17:37, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:Madhubala.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. [edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Choroid plexus papilloma.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Choroid plexus papilloma.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:19, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:MattiMantyla.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:MattiMantyla.jpg.
[edit] Japanese villages, towns, and cities
Unlike some of the recent discussions at CFD, the classification of villages, towns, and cities in Japan is well-defined; and, I can't think of any reason that would prompt us to eliminate that distinction in the categorization here. Before making changes to any more prefectures, can you bring up your rationale at either WP:MOS-JA or WP:WPJ ?? Thanks. Neier (talk) 13:19, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. I reverted the categorization changes, and, will let the empty cats sit a few days so they can be speedied. As far as infoboxes go, I like your idea of two maps; but, the image in the template you linked to seems a bit large for Japan, since it includes a great deal of China and Russia, and also does not include the southern islands like Okinawa. Standardizing the infoboxes of Japanese articles (cities, railroads, prime ministers, whatever) with the rest of the world always seems to cause issues of one sort or another; so, I try to keep my nose out of that. :-) Neier (talk) 01:12, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of Slovenian astronomers
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of Slovenian astronomers, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of List of Slovenian astronomers. - Other than this, the lists serve as an excellent way to build content on wikipedia and to identify the notable biographies that are missing. If given time to develop I think they provide an excellent overview of people by country on wikipedia. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:18, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- I added the {{prod}} tag to List of Slovenian astronomers because I think that it is a list which has an underlying concept that is non-notable. You should create a Category|category for Slovenian astronomers, then if any of them are notable, add their articles to that category. Stifle (talk) 16:20, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- Category:Slovenian astronomers already existed but due to the huge uneveness in knowledge as yet we only have one article but this isn't to say that no others are not "notable". Identifying what is missing is the most important thing we can do to develop this encyclopedia and plan for future growth and I am not the only one who agrees with me, many administrators and good editors have also agreed with me. Other than this many editors find such lists useful . I doubt I could have made 136,000 edits to wikipedia and not learned a thing or two about how to build this site ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:25, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

The problem is that I don't speak Slovene so if I start the articles they are likely to be small stubs until somebody can translate later, which is likely to attract editors such as yourself who will try to delete them and plaster them with tags. [edit] Re: List of Slovenian architects
Hi:
that's great! I only think the list is a little overinflated: there are a lot of absolutely unimportant architects there. I think we should try to cut it down to the essential. I don't believe every architect who ever designed a house deserves his own article, so I see no point in putting them on the list. I suggest we do the same as with the List of Slovenian writers or List of Slovenian language poets: concentrate on grouping together the articles already written plus adding the really important ones that are missing. Viator slovenicus (talk) 17:04, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- It's a big question when is it reasonable to have a list when a category suffies. If there are only blue links, a cat is enough. If there are reds, let's put them on the taskforce :-) --Tone 17:45, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- I kind of agree with user Tone on that. The Lists of Slovenian people on the Slovenian wp are sometimes competely senseless, I'm sorry to say. The List of Slovenian architects was a preposterous thing before I edited it. It was mostly spam. I even found a neighbour of mine on the list (a certain Niko Jurca), who is indeed a fine person and an architect by education, but as far as I know he hasn't projected a single building in his life. On the other side, several crucial architects were missing from this enormously long list, such as Boris Kobe, Viljem Treo or Gregor Maček. I guess someone just copy-pasted the membership list of some Slovene architects association from their homepage or sth. and then added some famous dead architects who already had an article on the Slovenian wp (Plečnik, Ravnikar, Vurnik, Šubic, etc.) I'm afraid most of those lists are useless. Also many biographies on the Slovenian wp are not really that important to be translated into English. I would strongly suggest not to start translating them to English from scratch: we first have to identify crucial articles. If we don't set priorities, we'll find ourselves spammed by useless long lists, which is the same as not havnig them at all, or even worse.
- About the template List of Slovenes: I think the categories can be reduced to at least a third or a quarter of the original or even to a tenth. I don't see much point in the category, say, "Slovene cymbals players". Viator slovenicus (talk) 17:57, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- Re: I wonder, too. However, I doublechecked on Google and on the webpage http://www.arhitekturni-vodnik.org/: if they're not there, they are definetely not notable (this is a comprehensive list of virtually all important Slovene architects of the post-WWII period; although only of those who worked in Slovenia: and I don't think all of them deserve an encyclopedic article, but if they're not there - unless if they worked outside SLO - then they definetely don't fit into wp). Viator slovenicus (talk) 18:12, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
-
- Well, the easy way to claim someone is notable is to put a good reference to it. (obviously, you can see I am still showing effects of a certain recent incident :P ) Those lists at sl: are often edited by anons adding themselevs and their friends and they stay there either because the community there is too small to evaluate every such edit or because the community does not pay such attention to lists (this is more likely since the article about no-names get deleted quickly). So, I disencourage copying those lists or making stubs of them, at least for now. We have missing articles section on the taskforce already. --Tone 18:25, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

- Agreed on the LDC issues. When I went through and assessed the first lot of bot-added articles I found a significant number from SE Asia where we had nothing more than one sentence. I'd love to expand those if solely for educational purposes but I wonder how we're going to get info from places like Burma. Expanding the smaller museums/museums in non English dominant countries is a big part of the project scope. Language issues are big so I started a member sub section for those who speak/read something other than English, museums in the former USSR are almost as much of an issue. It's sad. But some have interwiki links so I'm hoping with a little nudging of the right poeple we can get help translating from the original language/s. - Agreed. And for all we know, any of these Burmese museums are the cultural equivalents of the Met, Tate, etc. I think the African museums are less of an issue simply because travel is done more freely there and journalists and others are able to write about the museums on press trips, and they've been covered in travel publications. It's still not extensive, but it's far better than those in China, North Korea, Burma and other locations where information is stifled at best. I hope that the other editor is able to make contact through the library in Yangon because more information is wonderful. TRAVELLINGCARIMy storyTell me yours 19:45, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re
Hi, Blofeld, and sorry for not getting in touch earlier. Your message came while I was away on a rather long, and I have a two-mile long backlog staring at me. That and I was afraid that you were just trying to lure me into a shecret volcano ;). I was thrilled that we now have an article on Cesereanu, so I expanded it - I tend to focus on one article at a time, obsess with it for a while and build it to an almost GA level, then I more or less move on (which is why Alexandrescu will have to wait: there is much to say, and it's, oh, not that interesting at the moment). But you do deserve a kudos for filling those redlinks.
To answer your question (though the Cesereanu expansion probably answered it before me): yes, i do speak Romanian. If you have any questions about any stuff written in that language or need me to look into anything else in the meantime, I'd be happy to oblige. Later, Dahn (talk) 18:06, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- To your last question: it's definitely "Maria Baciu". I'm not sure how and where the other came up, but Romanians may invert the two personal names in common but unusually bureaucratic instances - in school or in the army, they would turn a, say, Mircea Cărtărescu into a "Cărtărescu Mircea"; another instance outside this context is a horrible "patriotic song" of the 70s, where a reference was made to one Ceauşescu Nicolae. The habit is quite recent (not sure just how recent, but some say the communists introduced it), and appears to be dying out.
- On the larger issue: I don't mind stubs at all. I just prefer to come at the second stage in the process you outline, or move from nothing to GAish in just about one edit. I feel more comfortable with covering a topic than with stubbing, and I may just slowly but surely do that for most stubs you create. I would however advise against mirroring Romanian wikipedia indiscriminately: as any reliable editor here will tell you, the whole section is riddled with major problem, and some are likely to affect your your project. For example, among the article it has on writers, there are three cases, all unacceptable: 1) articles that are riddled with POV statements, weasel words, trivia etc. that may make it to FA level there without so much as a single citation (!); 2) articles that copy large clumps from copyrighted works (such as from George Călinescu's History of Romanian Literature), which also imply that the plagiarists may pass a writer's opinions for facts; 3) overblown and under-cited articles on authors who may not actually merit any entry. I think that a good system would be to stub mainly or even only for those that are redlinks over here. Dahn (talk) 18:56, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

- Cool. I've actually had Baconsky in my sight for a long while now: I have a draft around for an expansion, but I never got around to doing it. Yes, he is definitely notable (and quite controversial, given some of his political choices). More on this soon, hopefully. Dahn (talk) 19:17, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
I certainly would not call your messages "bugging", and I'm making mental notes of those articles (some I have noticed or will actually notice as filled redlinks in various article I've watchlisted over the years). So, again, feel free to let me know if there's any quick way in which I can help - I only use "quick" because a more focused editing on my part may take a while, and will move at a slower pace, but I'm willing to look over, double-check or translate anything you may ask me to as time permits.
On your list, I see Dimitrie Anghel, Aderca and the aforementioned Baconsky, all of whom I would like to revisit really soon (for a glimpse of where Anghel fits in, see my Traian Demetrescu or Christian Rakovsky; as for now, it could do without all the redlinks at the end, most or all of which will probably never be articles).
I feel I should clarify this: I never meant to imply that you could not tell who was notable and who wasn't. I'm convinced you are. However, I felt I needed to underline that rowiki takes absurd liberties which, I feel, should not be imported here, but which may try to deceive the untrained eye. Such was the case of one Romanian author who considered himself notable, and who created a scandal on two wikis some two or three years ago. I was not aware of the discussion you had about Slovenian writers, but I now see how my words of caution were redundant. If there is anything I would still highlight when it comes to this topic, it's this: whatever wikipedias like the Slovenian one may be, the Romanian one is worse, because it was for long assailed by a small set of interest groups (part of this was revealed to honest users when they explored the attempted use of rowiki as a tool for propagating neofascism). But anyway.
Keep up the great work, and best regards. Keep in touch, Dahn (talk) 19:50, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Recent activity
The past week has been, well, problematic. I've now finished the articles for inclusion in the Biography rotation, finished today luckily, have been trying to arrange the possibility of coordinators for the Christianity project, and been working a bit more concentratedly on getting the new draft of the project directory out in that section. Sorry about the rather more "focused" (other less pleasant words apply as well) person I've been lately. I've been trying to fix all the directory links to the Assyria project the past few minutes or however long it's been at the same time, and only found your message was deleted before I even got a chance to respond to it. Unfortunately, with some of these, there are a lot of places they're listed under. The new articles do look good, though. I hope to be able to return to normal in the next few days.
