- I don't really get the matter with this site... Are these images copyrighted or not???? If they are, so there is nothing else to do. If they aren't, so what's the exact problem? There is no reason to be upset. If the images are indeed not copyrighted so we can bring them back later. Don't be upset please! I think we had a great time with this wonderful period of images on every article. But if they are copyrighted, there must have been an end to it. If not Sarvagnya, it would have been another guy who has nothing substantial to do on the Wikipedia.
- I'm personalyl immensely grateful to you for your hard work and dedication. I'm aware of every step you took forward to have images. I'm impressed and full of admiration at the same time. You have done a great job, and we are all aware of that: Yamla, Riana, Rahul etc... and myself, and NOBODY can take it from you.

Omg, I just managed to read about it. Why would he do such a thing? Anyway to get rid of this Sarvag? And btw, I've got a document claiming that kollywoodtoday don't copyright their material, and is free for public use. Would that help, if the case is proceeded with? I don't want to start on Sarvagnya personally, just incase, he rolls in to every little detail of my past like he did to Shahid. People like Sarvagnya make Wikipedia totoally suck. Universal Hero (talk) 23:52, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- Please don't take him too seriously! I don't give a damn for his acts and these images at all... He also has quite a documentative past, and you can see that in several ANI discussions, as well as his talk archives LOL! Many great editors know that and would agree with me on that. Just be cool in this case friend.:) Shahid • Talk2me 00:17, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

- HHHHHAAAAA... Hey Blofeld! Welcome to Wikipedia!!! HAAAA... The guy was apparently shocked to know that you have over 100,000 edits on the Wiki with many FAs and numerous GAs and DYKs to your credit... Plus, you have created articles more than every other editor here EVER! LOL... That's why he is the the one to close this discussion... It was so funny... He was freaked out! She is perhaps immensely ahamed of starting this discussion... He started it and then was the one to say, "Thank you Blofeld for..."! The world is full of chameleons isn't it? I think it's weird that he doesn't know you! Blofeld, he himself! Oh Blof, I hope you do take as fun, because it's funny. I liked how you said, "Use your head. This is wiki. Articles won't remain "useless stubs" forever. They are here to build up into full articles.

[edit] French communes
I have Hautes-Alpes, Cher, Corrèze, Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse ready for you now. Enjoy Markussep Talk 21:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- I discovered the list comparer in AWB, that makes it a lot easier to find the missing articles (false blue links) after you've done the bulk. I don't like the French infobox very much, it doesn't even have an automatic map like the Austrian, German, Belgian and Greek ones. Maybe I'll look into that if I get very annoyed with it. But first: finish the German infoboxes (only half of Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia to go!) and creating articles for all French articles! Markussep Talk 23:00, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

-
- I just finished Lot-et-Garonne, that is, I left some red links with disambiguations (e.g. Rives, Lot-et-Garonne. But you'll see when you need to change the interwikis, nearly all of these are like Rives (Lot-et-Garonne) in fr: and nl:. All blue links are "real" blue links now, and the ones you create won't have to be moved. Markussep Talk 15:47, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes.

[edit] Back on line
Hi Ernst! Just to let you know I am back on line after a wonderful 3 weeks holiday filled with relentless shopping, elbowing strangers at January sales, visiting volcanic lakes and vents, and losing all my in-mail due to a misguided attempt to try to compete with a teenage girl for control of an old-fashioned dial-up service and the use of the telephone. Thank Mercury for broadband!!! So, I will try to get back to work on the Wikipedia as soon as I can - though I have another column and an interview to do for the Japanese on-line mag "Groovin' High" and a couple of academic articles on early Central Asian history to edit and comment on for friends - so forgive me if I don't snap smartly to attention immediately. Hope all is well in Wales. Cheers, John Hill (talk) 10:08, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Slow down a bit! Having trouble keeping up with the patrolling! How about adding the portal to the talk page, that should do it! :-)) Mjroots (talk) 14:08, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- Have already been on the talk page! What it needs is more people patrolling. Another suggestion, if you and Markussep can arrange to be active at the same time, you could list 20, then patrol each others entries. Mjroots (talk) 17:06, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe you can slow down a bit by adding only the notable communes. The others are just clogging the newpages up.contribsSTYROFOAM☭1994TALK 17:35, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, adding content without citing a reliable source is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. This is especially important when dealing with biographies of living people, but applies to all Wikipedia articles. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are already familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources, please take this opportunity to add your reference to the article. Thank you. Tim Vickers (talk) 20:25, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- I had assumed you were new, since creating a mass of unreferenced stubs is not consistent with our policies. If you can add infoboxes and references to these stubs, please do this as you create them. Tim Vickers (talk) 20:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Hello, Blofeld of SPECTRE. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding your creation of unreferenced stubs. Yes, this may be fine, but this is creating a great deal of work for other people to come and clean these up afterwards. It might be a great deal better to create fewer and more developed stubs, rather than creating them all forst and then making sure they conform to policies later. --Tim Vickers (talk) 20:39, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again, my concerns have been allayed and I trust you to do this correctly and come back to the articles and expand them with infoboxes and links. Sorry for the hassle, but you can see why I was concerned! Tim Vickers (talk) 22:50, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
So you had, nevermind! If you need any admin help with these stubs (unprotecting deleted pages, moves etc..) please don't hesitate to get in touch. I owe you a few favors. :) Tim Vickers (talk) 17:32, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Internet in Thailand sucks no matter what, but I've noticed being especially bad since the cables were cut. I'll do what I can with the Madagascar map. Simply because I made a mistake and put the wrong page up for deletion does NOT mean that you can go and do the same to mine. That was definitely not the way to handle a problem. [edit] Co-ordinate madness
The co-ords you're posting on La Roche-sur-le-Buis et al are somewhat over-precise. I hazard a guess that 10dp is enough to identify the location of the left corner of the teabag in my teacup. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Precision, for instance. --Tagishsimon (talk) 17:55, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Clearly, I'm all for blaming the French, but it does appear that you are the perpetrator, in that you're making the choice to provide 10dp when composing the page. Perhaps you have Gallic antecedents? --Tagishsimon (talk) 17:59, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
"The best is the enemy of the good" - I think that such typographical niceties as the number of significant figures could easily be left to a later stage in article development. Tim Vickers (talk) 18:05, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Umm, well, I appreciate the sentiment, but would quibble at over-precision being a "typographical nicety", especially if it is an elective input, the cost of correction of which will be long. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:09, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Well try looking at the latest ones without the coordinates. Either way a bot will come along and add it anyway. ♦ King of Baldness ♦ $1,000,000? 18:10, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- I slide further & further away from understanding. Clearly with co-ords (of any length) is better than without. What I do not understand is why anyone - super-criminal or otherwise - would elect to plug co-ords in with a sub-millimeter accuracy. I'd like you to know that I'm relaxed about it either way. Wouldn't wish to you feel persecuted as you go along making the wikie better & all. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:14, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Heavens now you're really taking the cookie!! Yes boss, I will stick to 2 decimal points then cool? ♦ King of Baldness ♦ $1,000,000? 18:16, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Mmm, yes, 2 (~ 1 km), even 3 (~ 100 m) would be excellent! Pleasure doing business with you. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:19, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Precise co-ordinates will be necessary later in the "deletion process", but perhaps I've said too much. Tim Vickers (talk) 18:20, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Thats what I originally thought. Notice on french wikipedia despite having ten decimal places this doesn't actually appear in the infobox only when you go into editing it. I believe it is coding to support the map, which doesn't seem to work on here, otherwise I'd start them with the map too ♦ King of Baldness ♦ $1,000,000? 18:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yup, I'm not quite understanding why the infobox does not make more use of the co-ords (of whatever length), such as to drive a hyperlink to the map page, as per the coord template. Somewhat cheese eating :( --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:29, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- Yes, I too am not happy that the co-ordinates aren't being rendered as clickable to take you to corresponding online maps. Unfortunately, I don't have enough expertise to work out why. I do hope someone can fix it.--86.149.53.196 (talk) 13:22, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Villages in Botswana
I consider infoboxes a bit redundant in this case, as there is so little information to summarize. I don't feel strongly either way, though... I can add them. It will take a few years before these stubs will start growing, though. They are difficult for non-natives to expand, and as far as I know there is exactly one active editor from Botswana (I have never even been in Africa, myself). Cheers, – Sadalmelik (talk) 20:46, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Botswana is probably one of the best African countries as far as web resources are concerned. Government appears to upload absolutely everything into web, including the grades of school children, and local press agency has published their daily news stories in web since 1999... It would just take huge amounts of effort and time to piece it all together. I have not even tried to see how far these stubs could be taken. – Sadalmelik (talk) 21:12, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:KujtimCashku.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:KujtimCashku.gif. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. [edit] Speedy deletion of Template:HKfilmlist
A tag has been placed on Template:HKfilmlist requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes.

[edit] Non-free use disputed for Image:AlCapone.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:AlCapone.jpg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 11:23, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:LaneChandler.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:LaneChandler.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 13:57, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pushpin maps
Thanks for the indications on that. It is rather a cool function. It'd be even nicer if the outline map showed state borders: any idea if that's possible? Aille (talk) 16:13, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- That'd be astounding, thanks. And I'll have a stab at putting maps on some of those other articles later. Aille (talk) 16:25, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- The relief map? It looks attractive and does provide some additional information over the boring yellow one (ok, it's geographical vs. political, but I'm sure that's just my personal preference showing; certainly better than nothing). Aille (talk) 16:31, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Shame about the political map, but I'll be happy to include the relief one as I work my way through obscure Mexican towns. I suppose the sort of people who don't know the country's divided into states won't know about the 5000m+ mountains either ("I thought it was all one big desert"), so it's all education at the end of the day. Regards, Aille (talk) 16:45, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

- Re the coords for Aconchi -- perhaps that was me; I just did Ejutla, Oaxaca, and I proved myself incapable of copying 2-digit numbers without making a mess of it. Sáric looks good: I've come across a few of those gray state/muni maps and have included them when I can, but the set is far from complete, unfortunately. Aille (talk) 17:33, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Nooo... in my first attempt, I wrote 99 instead of 96 for the °W. Number blindness. I was blaming the Enciclopedia de los municipios for getting it wrong. Putting the figures between <!-- was just supposed to help me copy them right and (on Villa Pesqueira, for example) doesn't appear to have broken the code. Aille (talk) 17:43, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Mexico
Actually, I had a bot tag all the Mexico articles a few weeks ago. It has about 8000 now, although 7000 haven't yet been assessed yet. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Mexico/Assessment for the current figures. John Carter (talk) 18:56, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Categorization, and miscategorization, can certainly be a problem. If the articles clearly do relate to Mexico, feel free to add the project banner and an appropriate category to indicate a relationship to Mexico. John Carter (talk) 19:00, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Map brag
I've just added a multi-pin map to Sistema de Radiodifusoras Culturales Indigenistas. Other than wanting to show it off, have you got any comments on the execution or ideas for improvement? The location for Xpujil looks a bit off, but that's a technical detail I can check tomorrow. Regards, Aille (talk) 07:37, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Bannerizing
First wanted to ensure that there weren't any other projects I didn't know about which had to be included as well. Should probably get the bot requests out for most of the newer projects out later this week. Betacommandbot is able to generate category lists automatically, which would be wonderfully useful, but it's I think still blocked for a few more days. As soon as I get the cat lists, though, I figure we will be having major tagging taking place. John Carter (talk) 21:55, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Talk:Preity Zinta
It failed GA. Please see my comment on the talk page. I disagree with the review for the simple fact that I'm not forced to add any other reviews from Western critics, and it is not supported by any GIAFA criterion. And if you see with some more observation, in the NYT site, there are no other reviews describing her film performances at all. She is an Indian, I can't see why we must add Western reviews when A) Western reviews cannot describe her better than Indian ones. B) There are not many Western reviews describing her. Shahid • Talk2me 17:21, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

- Your message on the reassessment page contradicts your message on the talk page. I didn't say, "Why should I care for Westerners"; I said, "Why should I care for Westerners/Easterners". And finally, there are three Western reviews on the article, from Variety and one from NYT. It is sufficient. BTW, these three reviews decribe her performances in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer Zaara and Salaam Namaste, all of which were successful overseas. Shahid • Talk2me 18:28, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

- You are completely free to express your opinion whatever it is. It was just that your message started a bit.. "I don't much like your statement 'why should I care for westerners'. You state many times in the article..." That's why I reacted like this. I was a bit surprised. I have no problems against western reviews. If there were more, I would happily add some. But she is an Indian who works in the Indian film industry, so we obviously should try to present the way she is preceived mainly in her own country, and only then outside. Sorry for everything. [edit] Stubbing Madagascar
Yeah, I grew bored with Botswana, and the database for Madagascar I stumbled on has quite a bit of information. I'm generating the text with a little computer program I wrote, so it's not very fluent English. Still, this is the only way I can manage to spell those Malagasy names :) By the way, if you have any comments on those stubs, please tell me. I was in any case planning to do Diana Region, and then ask WP:Africa for comments. Better now than after creating 1000+ article mess :) Especially as the database is actualy in french... I'm not even sure whether commune should be translated as town, municipality or simply commune.
True, pink maps are ugly. I don't know why I actually started to use it... I think I made a half a dozen or so pink maps. I like yellow better even though it's not really pretty either. I also experimented a bit with relief, but it was a bit too crowded. – Sadalmelik (talk) 19:06, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cambodia commune articles
wouldn't it make more sense to initially just create redirects to the section page and list there each commune and phum in the section? right now all the many commune articles are just duplicating info that's on the section page (which already lists all phums--the only content in the commune articles!) and are unlikely to be expanded any time soon, given the lack of attention to cambodia-related articles. it seems better to have good merged pages that are easier to keep track of and can be spliced off of if needed than a million distributed articles that are extremely short. i do think the redirects are an important part of this plan though, because if readers type in the commune, they should be going somewhere. Calliopejen1 (talk) 00:23, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again, I didn't mean to upset you, I was just trying to offer a friendly suggestion. I agree that Banan District (Cambodia) could be a model of what the district articles should look like. I just think it would be more appropriate to expand the district articles for now with the listing of communes and phums, and wait to start the commune articles until there is something more (like a locator map) than would be found in the article on the district. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:58, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- That's good--where did you get the info about the commune location? Right now I'm on google looking for decent maps of Cambodia and it seems like there really aren't any. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:15, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- I just found a good directory of communes and villages at http://www.stats.nis.gov.kh/areaname/vill_pro02.htm that lists Khmer names and village codes too and let me flesh out Bay Damram to something that looks respectable. Their names for communes seem that they put them all in one word (ឃុំបាយដំរាំ) whereas km.wiki separates them into two (e.g. ឃុ ំបាយដំរាំ), which seems to get more google hits. (There are km.wiki articles for what looks like all the commons, for interwiki linking.) I don't think Khmer normally has spaces between words, so I'm not sure why this is being done but I just went by google and did it anyways. Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:48, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

An editor has nominated List of James Bond henchmen in The Living Daylights, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of James Bond henchmen in The Living Daylights and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 16:59, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Stu Hamm.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Stu Hamm.jpg.
Thanks for uploading Image:KaukoHelovirta.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. GDonato (talk) 11:57, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Maps & boxes
OK. I just did exactly that on Calkiní. I thought it might be a bit disingenuous to use the pushpin maps to pinpoint entire municipalities (1000s of km2), but most of these articles about towns that share names with the surrounding munis cover both (albeit badly), and then there's the scale of the Mexico locator map, so it's not really an issue. So, when you've finished the French communes, fancy starting on municipalities of Oaxaca? Aille (talk) 20:21, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Vaucluse, Doubs
A tag has been placed on Vaucluse, Doubs requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Hey! Hoe are you? I have to tell you something.
124.125.208.23 (talk · contribs) keeps on reverting the Jodhaa Akbar article to his version. His version means -- some unreferenced claims, reviews from unreliable sites and above all -- the full history of the name "Jodhaa Bai" (and what historians think about it) which he thinks belongs to this article, while it is irrelevant here because it is an article about a recently released film, and the history of this name belongs to another article called Akbar. In this article it's irrelevant. I was reverting his edits, warning him, discussed the issue on the talk page, and even another editor told him that this info was more relevant to the page of Akbar, but he keep reverting. That's how the page looked in his version. Total violations of WP:LEAD, WP:N and WP:UNDUE
Not only that, he also reverted all the edits by all editors, while there were numerous constructive edits in between, like formats etc. I turned to User:Riana yesterday but she didn't respond. During the night, he took my request to stop adding it and moved the so called info (which is referenced, but irrelevant) to the synopsis section... Imagine to yourself, the history of the name Jodhaa Bai and what historians have to say about it in a synopsis section! See the version after his night edits - [2]
Today I requested for page protection because of heavy vandalism, and was sure that he would stop with that, but now I see another editor, Itihaaskar (talk · contribs) who is a clear sock puppet of this IP, reverting the page to this IP's version! Again, reverting altogether, with no consideration of the in-between edits, even the protection template was removed -- see that comparison.
I think this guy should be blocked for his disruptive behavious and him being a sockpuppeter.
I turned to John, and added his opinion on the talk page. Could you tell me what do you think? I'm losing my temper, and this guy is going to violate WP:3RR if he reverts once again. The full history of the name Jodhaa Bai, is irrelevant to this article. Annoying!
Best regards, Shahid • Talk2me 18:19, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- It is not vandalism but he keeps reverting to his version even if there are important edits in between. He also used a sockpuppet account, and he will make his third revert (violation of WP:3RR) if he reverts again.
- As for the name Jodha Bai, it has definitely nothing to do with the film article. Does it? Shahid • Talk2me 18:34, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yeh I see... [3] - if you look at these links he gave you - I reverted additions of unreferenced films, which were not confirmed. If you look through the history of these pages - I did ask for sources in the edit summary, but repetitious additions w/o refs drove me to revert with pupups. That's what I get from trying to clean pages.:( But I'm also not that curious to get a rollback. When I feel I need it, I'll nominate myself. Shahid • Talk2me 14:23, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] France
I do believe you. Like I've said, having seen the number of tour guides on France in the local libraries alone, I know I could probably create a three or four paragraph article on virtually every village in France just on the basis of the tour guides in the local libraries alone. And this isn't dealing with the historical developments, unique products (including cheeses), people from the area, churches, other buildings, and on and on and on, which could be garnered from history books and the like. Like I said, the same thing could probably be said about most similar areas in Western Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, etc. Certainly, from what I've heard the French wikipedia deals primarily with France, so I have no doubt that there is a great degree of good content over there. I just can't read French. —Preceding unsigned comment added by John Carter (talk • contribs) 00:32, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Translations
The idea has a few problems, unfortunately. There have been projects before, I think regarding Spain?, dealing with automatic translation. The problem lies in the fact that the translations can often be faulty. I'm not sure if you ever heard about the dishwashing soap advertising campaign in Quebec which offered women "squeaky-clean 'French euphemisism for female genitalia'", and was remarkably popular as a result, but that was a several hundred thousand dollar advertising campaign that made the mistake of using the wrong synonym of "dish". It's a virtual certainty that the same sorts of mistakes would be made by us. Having said that, if we could get some dedicated editors who knew other languages to add information to other wikis, that would be wonderfully helpful. I'm not sure about this, but I think maybe the best place to go for that sort of thing would be Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination, as a way of maybe getting some foreign language classes to translate articles from the language they're studying. Let me post something there and see what if any results we can get. John Carter (talk) 00:46, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the barnstar as it came at the right time. I've been getting a bit frustrated with the abogados at Wiki. But I'll keep trucking on! I've been tyding up the Artentinian articles and checking that all the images are okay. I love your intestinal fortitude on Wiki and that you edit all sorts of artilces. As for me: just films and a few actors. I'm going to start articles on Argentinina actors. At least one or two per film. I'm going to take a break from film noir. I'm so glad that I got a chance to see those 15 Argentinina films last month. And I thnk I can find a few more. Well, again--THANKS YOU-- for your kind thought. Hi Ernst! Thanks for the note and all your tireless work! It is indeed a great thing to get rid of those huge annoying boxes! The article on Tenzin Gyatso looks much better now.
I will certainly try to get to them as soon as I can. Unfortunately, at the moment, all my "spare time" seems to have disappeared - I am having to rewrite sections of my book, edit a very complex 99 page historical article (in 5 languages - of which I can only read 3!) for a friend, as well as writing a new article for "Groovin' High!" (Not to mention all the domestic chores I have been avoiding for yonks). I hardly get time to eat my morning bowl of magma these days!
But greetings - and thanks - and I will try to be back on deck asap. Cheers, John Hill (talk) 06:58, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

- Blofeld of SPECTRE; Ok, I would include the national map and the province map and in the case of Buenos Aires, also a City map including Grand Buenos Aires, Béccar for example is not strictly a city but a suburb of Buenos Aires City and it wouldn't make sense to pin point it from the Province!

[edit] Photo question
There is one country on the planet, which, understandably, has really poor coverage. That country is the extremely small nation of Niue. You are much better at placement of pictures than I am, so I'm asking you this rather than trying to do it myself, but I was wondering whether you might know of any way to perhaps contact the government there and maybe obtain public domain images from the nation which could be used in articles relating directly to the nation and other articles as appropriate. I think, given the status of the economy there, they would probably be willing to release a lot of decent photos, in the hope of maybe having them attract a few more tourists to the island. John Carter (talk) 16:57, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- No, actually, we don't need images, because we don't have a lot of content related to the subject in the first place. But the country's economy has been in deep trouble for some time, and most of the residents are, from what I've read, employees of the government (most everyone else seems to have moved to New Zealand for work), and it seems to me that we could probably use a lot of images of, for instance, atoll formations, bays, trees, etc, which they would probably have. The country is trying to develop tourism, but at this point only has one flight from New Zealand per week. I do tend to think that there is a real chance the government down there would love to have appealing images of the area strewn about wherever so that they might be able to better publicize themselves and maybe draw in a bit more money. Also, you might be interested in the new thread at Wikipedia:Administrators' Noticeboard/Incidents regarding User: Sarvagnya]]. John Carter (talk) 17:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- I wish I could provide a more direct link, but the creator of the section titled it in such a way that it can't be made a functional link. It's heading 38, though. And I saw that matter regarding Shankbone. I don't much about the details yet, but it is very unfortunate when anyone gets pressured to leave, except when, perhaps in the case of some editors, we'd be better off without them. - Not a good idea. We have to figure out a way to move the article to Politics of Kosovo. But then again, I guess that could work. Kudos. --Prevalis (talk) 18:53, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

I have nominated Pál Balkay, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pál Balkay. [edit] France stubs
There are a lot of French editors out there. I've heard that most of them have been working primarily on the French wikipedia, but if they see more content over here, and if the Echo project can point out those articles to them, that'll help a lot. John Carter (talk) 22:24, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- Look at it this way. Anyone who takes Sarvagnya's side regularly is siding with someone whom several other editors, as per the ANI thread, have found at best unpleasant, and that can call into question their own character. To paraphrase various people, if they're shooting at us, we must be doing something right. And I am hoping to get a reply from Durova and others soon about trying to get some high school and colleges classes trying to translate foreign articles, which shouldn't hurt. I'm also going to contact the one teacher I know in Mexico who has had classes writing articles lately. With any luck, we might be able to fairly soon have a few more editors involved in at least some translation efforts. John Carter (talk) 22:38, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

So true. Well, an administrator has suggested I try RfC instead of the ANI. Either in the RfC, or in the next step, more complex violations like gaming the system to ones convenience, would be looked at more critically, or so I've heard. In any case, at my request, the administrator has given me some guidance on the matter on my talk page. [edit] SK films 2008
Hi, Blofeld. Yes, I've been wondering what to do about that list too... I might look around and red-link some of the more prominent new releases, but I'm cautious about starting up articles on films which will have little-to-no sourcing, as these things tend to get put up for, ahem, deletion. Then we have to waste time either arguing against its deletion, or in repeating the work a couple months later when the inevitable sourcing becomes available. So, I guess my attitude towards it is, it can wait a while... Dekkappai (talk) 17:22, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
- Since we don't yet have any articles for 2008 SK films, I don't think there is any hurry to create this list; we already have one list of red links for SK films (which I update reguarly), so another one would be redundant. Having said that, we're now two months into the year and about a dozen or so films have already been released. I'm sure ample sources can be found, even for forthcoming films like Kim Ji-woon's The Good, the Bad and the Weird. PC78 (talk) 22:48, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] New Ecuador banner
It looks like User:TAnthony decided to create a separate banner, and ignored the existing categories. It looks like he based it on the Uruguay banner. It also looks like he never bothered to ask anyone in advance. Personally, I think it might be best if someone other than me were to ask why this was done. John Carter (talk) 19:59, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
- No, that actually is an older banner which I hadn't seen before. It is probably more complicated than it even remotely required for such a small country, but that's what they evidently want. John Carter (talk) 20:16, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Laos pictures
Those shots of the scenery should definitely help encourage people to visit there, particularly the "misty" ones. The more images of that kind we can get, the better. And the maps showing locations are very useful as well. This is what I like seeing location articles look like.
Oh, for what it's worth, an English professor in Mexico has agreed that she will have some of her students work on translating articles too, although initially from English to Spanish. They will then try to write articles for English later. If we can get more of this sort of work, we may well be able to improve the content on many countries. That's one of the reasons I thought of Niue first, actually. It's the only country on the planet that has free wireless high fidelity and mobile phone usage for everybody, basically because it's so physically small. I still haven't gotten a response there, though, although I'm still hoping.
I'm also considering adjusting my sandbox of the Africa banner to remove the importance assessments. With the bot that Walkerma and others said should be available soon, we'll be able to have more generalized importance ratings for most countries anyway. [edit] Brynjar Aa
Hi Blofeld of SPECTRE, I have nominated the article Brynjar Aa for deletion in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brynjar Aa. As a routine maintanance task, I google searched many times for this article, but could not find enough references that can establish its notability. So I think it do not meet the general notability guideline. Even the IMDB entry has litttle information about the biography. The basic criteria for notability of biography "If the depth of coverage is not substantial, then multiple independent sources may be needed to prove notability; trivial coverage of a subject by secondary sources may not be sufficient to establish notability". There is no award etc which can prove notability. So I have nominated this article. You have done an excellent job in other articles, created all the articles about french communes and various places. Please do not take it personally. You had created the article in 2006, may be you were not aware of the notability guideline at that time. I am just doing a routine job. Hope you will not take it personally, Best regards. You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 09:59, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

- If I see some notable name I have no problem to start an article, but in infoboxes, there is no problem with removing RLs, because if it isn't a blue link, it clearly indicates that an article on that person is missing.

We need a lot more articles for every country in the world. I wish there was a way to do a RAM-BOT for other countries, but most of them don't have a census site like the US does to make it easy for the bot. Corvus cornixtalk 21:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

- Cool. What things are you looking at?? I borrowed a copy of the Lonely Planet Vietnam book and I'm surprised that most of the landmarks in the LP book don't have articles on VN. I also created an article for all the 650 odd districts. I'm suprised that 3 weeks later, about 6 of them had been expanded by random anons. I had no idea that anons like to add content to stubs but apparently only once the stubs exist and that they seem unwilling to register so that they create an article. So, I might do more stub creating drives... Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:35, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Need suggestion
Need a suggestion. When I am creating any article on "Crime in X country", then what will be the lead sentence of the article - "In X country, crime is present in various form" or "Crime in X country is present in various forms". For example, in the article Crime in Russia, the lead sentence starts with "In Russia, crime is present in various forms". Another format is possible: "Crime in Russia is present in various forms". All the crime related articles I created follow the first structure, I think the second structure will be better. I will like a opinion from you. [edit] Replaceable fair use Image:NicholasMcGaughey, jpg.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:NicholasMcGaughey,jpg.jpg.
If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rossrs (talk) 13:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Image source problem with Image:Florence LaBadie.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Florence LaBadie.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:49, 22 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. The Evil Spartan (talk) 20:49, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Saint-Waast
This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Saint-Waast, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Monceau-Saint-Waast. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.
This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 22:47, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] A Don
Disambiguating between the two villages through use of (1) and (2) is not acceptable- is there no way to disambiguate between them by location, or, at a pinch, date? Also, dab pages which don't link to any articles can be deleted- I assume you intend to create articles for the two villages? J Milburn (talk) 17:34, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- There's no need to be so defensive, I'm not accusing you of anything. An article on two villages that are linked only by their name would not be a good idea, either- perhaps, as I suggested above, you could disambiguate by their foundation date? J Milburn (talk) 17:40, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Central Asian banner
I left a message on that project's talk page and made a link to the new banner which exists separately, indicating to them that all they had to do to use the new banner was a copy and paste and that the various attendant acts were already accomplished. This was after some rather hysterical ranting from one particular member of that project. So, at this point, the ball is basically in their court. Evidently, they have decided not to change the banner, and as it is their banner, that's their decision. I can try to create separate banners for the individual national projects later, and probably will do so. However, I have also been specifically asked in the interim to do the assessments for a small new project in Christianity in India group, less than 600 articles total, and I'm trying to finish that so they have some idea where they stand before trying anything else. John Carter (talk) 19:22, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- He was the one who actually proposed all the subordinate projects for deletion, actually. Got it in one. Also, there's someone else who seems to be fanatically obsessed with the idea of Tuva, population 300000, getting its own work group, despite the fact that no one else has shown the slightest degree of interest in joining. I proposed to him on the work group page he created that trying to make it a subproject of Russia would make more sense, but I doubt he listened. Frankly, it looks like the banner may have cracked open a hornet's nest over there, and I think that it might be a better idea to just leave that part of the world alone for a while. Like I said, when I finish the assessments for the new Indian Christianity group, I'm going to try to consider finding a way to get the assessments for the other projects incorporated into some other banner, although I'm not entirely sure how yet. John Carter (talk) 19:35, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, yeah. If you have the time, I'd appreciate any feedback regarding Wikipedia:The Problem with Projects. Thanks. Regarding the missing content, there is a good idea there. The only question might be whether we might wind up scaring people away with too large of a list. I saw a similar list for a state once some time ago, and got very intimidated by it. Maybe the best way to go might be in list form, with maybe the individual article names following after the main name. So, for example, "Presidents - (1), (2), (3); Settlements in "X" (region of country) - (4), (5), (6)" or something along those lines. If it were said at the top that each of the entries was worthy of an article, that might help a lot. And, of course, they could all be red linked, which would be very useful. The more red links there are for anything, the more likely someone will create it. John Carter (talk) 20:34, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- Separation by commas would probably work best. If you do have an encyclopedia or other type source on any given nation, listing all the other entries in the book would be very useful too. That would be an indication that the articles are notable, and in some of the smaller countries that can be a question, given the limited press access many have over here. Oh, and, for what it's worth, in a real sense I wouldn't object to seeing a "bookkeeping" project on Tuva, but I can't imagine that any banner will be complicated enough to support all the regions of Russia. John Carter (talk) 20:48, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- One thing I remember reading earlier is it is, at this point, pretty much accepted that an entry in an encyclopedia of any kind is basically sufficient to establish notability. That's why I suggested that kind of source. Whether it's long enough for a separate article might be a different matter, but encyclopedia entries are evidently a de facto indicator of notability. John Carter (talk) 20:54, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Charles Matthews
I have to admit that whilst his contributions are greatly appreciated to the project that his writing isn't the best. Many of his articles are hard to read, or may require cleanup and he doesn't bother to use stub categories on his short articles on various religious figures. Yet as an admin his pages are automatically marked as patrolled. I don't see why admin automatically should have their pages patrolled as there are many editros who don't want to be admin and consistently add useful content ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:40, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

No ,I noticed you tagged one of Charles's articles for cleanup and I have to agree with you. Its a good un potentially but was quite scruffy looking and not that easy to read! Yes French villages are going well but are actually manually edited. I'm super fast!!! Once they are all started then they can be built upon. Hopefully we'll eventually have 36,000 have decent articles by the end of it! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:51, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

- Aah, now i get it! Sorry for not realizing earlier, im doing new page patrol and tagging at the same time. On the villages: Why on earth don't you let a bot handle those?!? Its pretty simple to write a bot to create those pages for you. At most, its a few hours of coding, even less if someone already created similar code. [edit] Districts
- This tells us that 24,182 settlements exist in Vietnam - I wonder what percentage currently have articles? I think it would be a good idea to draw up a list of cities, towns and villages in Vietnam A-Z. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 01:30, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- User_talk:Blnguyen/Archive73#Re:Districts_of_Vietnam - All the 650 odd districts have their articles, but I haven't inserted the population and land area stats in there yet. The raw data comes from here but the site is very slow to navigate. The site is slow and it is in map form, so you have to clcik on the coloured object to get the popn and area for the given district. Mercifully, another fellow has written down all the district stats here. The first government site also has all the stats for communes/wards (phuong/xa), the next level down from the districts. However, there has been nobody who has compiled a list of stats for us, so someone would have to click on each of the coloured blobs to get the info out (or go to vi.wikipedia and get it from there if it's quicker). I can help you to understand the navigation procedure if you want. You click the province from teh scroll down list, then you see a map of hte province. On the RHS, you choose "Phuong/Xa" from the click box and then click on the "i" icon on the LHS on the map to go into info mode. Then you click the various blobs to get the population (Dân số ) and area (Diện tích, in hectares) in the RHS. "Tên hành chính" is the name of the zone, and "Kiểu hành chính" tells you what type of zone it is, in this case "Xã" and below it will tell you the district (Huyện) and province (Tỉnh) that it belongs to. [edit] My apology
You have obviously made tremendous contributions to Wikipedia, and I think that is wonderful. When it comes to my comment, it is not the type of incident that should result in the tragedy it would be if you left the project. I have a strong dislike for microstubs such as the one which you had created. For reasons shared by many, and that you are probably to some extent aware of. However, I know that this is one position and that others have a far more positive opinion of these articles. Perhaps it would be a good idea if someone created an essay on the pros and cons of this type of article creation (sometimes also done by bots, at least on other-language projects). Sincerely, meco (talk) 08:18, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Don't leave. Seriously. The work you've done here has been tremendous and amazing; hell, the only reason I've put in so much of my own effort in recent weeks is because I've seen, in watching you, that it means something, that it can make a difference. I know that's a big statement, but it's true.
You've been an incredible asset to this project; without you here there wouldn't be nearly enough geographical coverage, and Lord only knows when it would happen. Don't let that all fall through. Without you, things may get done around here, but it's going to take a whole lot longer. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 07:10, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Don't go, or if you want to, come back later. All the best anyway. I have no idea what the row was about; I've only just seen this. Johnbod (talk) 19:38, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Wholeheartedly agree with both of the above. In terms of images and content regarding "less notable" locations on the planet, you're probably at least among the most valuable contributors we have. Your recent activities regarding France alone have probably been the biggest step forward for that country in the English wikipedia for some time. I can understand if external circumstances may have developed such that you no longer have much time, if any, to give the project, but the quality of your input, even at a greatly reduced rate, is probably more than equal to that of several others, myself included.
