[edit] Professional career
Marvin Harrison was selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 19th selection in the 1996 NFL Draft, a selction which was obtained in a trade that sent Jeff George to the Atlanta Falcons. Harrison has gone on to become the most productive receiver from that draft class, surpassing fellow wide receivers Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn, Eddie Kennison, Eric Moulds, Amani Toomer, Muhsin Muhammad, Terrell Owens and others. Harrison is generally considered among the top five wide receivers of all time.
In 2002 Harrison broke Herman Moore's single season receptions record by 20 receptions. He finished with 143 catches, and he also had over 1,700 yards receiving. In December, 2006 Harrison became just the fourth player in NFL history to record 1000 receptions, joining Jerry Rice (1549), Cris Carter (1101), and Tim Brown (1094). He is also one of only seven wide receivers in NFL history to reach 100 touchdowns.
Harrison was involved in one of the most infamous blunders in the history of the NFL Playoffs. In a 2003 wild card matchup against the Denver Broncos, Harrison caught a 20 yard pass from Peyton Manning across the middle. Deltha O'Neal, former cornerback for the Broncos, had forgotten to touch Harrison down, and Harrison stood up and continued running, eventually scoring on a fifty-yard touchdown play. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was infuriated with O'Neal and the rest of the Broncos defenders that were around Harrison, who helped clinch victory as the Colts went up 28-3. Indianapolis would eventually win 41-10 in a blowout. Harrison would finish that game against Denver with 7 receptions for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns, in his finest post-season performance to date.
Marvin Harrison is generally considered one of the more upstanding players in the NFL. In a recent episode of "The Top Five Reasons You Can't Blame" on ESPN Classic concerning the excessive celebrations of wide receiver Terrell Owens, former Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy said this about Harrison: "Terrell Owens is a guy that has to go out there and get recognized for his antics and celebrations, while a guy like Marvin Harrison wants to be recognized for his play on the field, not his antics or celebrations. That's the kind of receiver you want on your team".
Harrison underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in January 2008, and it is expected he will miss training camp. GM Bill Polian says Harrison will be ready for the season opener, and that all the news is good.
[edit] Police investigation
On May 2, 2008 it was reported by radio station WIP that Harrison was questioned by police concerning a shooting that occurred several days before at a bar owned by Harrison in North Philadelphia. Philadelphia police claimed they do not currently have any suspects.[2][3]
According to ESPN's unnamed sources, the alleged victim came into Harrison's bar at around 5 p.m., argued with Harrison, then left. Harrison allegedly followed and gunfire broke out. The victim was hit in the hand, with five of six shell casings found at the scene being linked to Harrison's gun.[4]
According to Marvin Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, he has spoken to Harrison and his attorney, and the reports are erroneous. Both have stated that Marvin was not involved in any shooting, and he is not the subject of this investigation.[5]
- There was a shooting on the highway at 25th and Thompson Streets in North Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at "around 5 pm." Two people were injured: a small boy struck by glass below the eye and a man grazed in the hand. Neither injury is considered serious and both have been released by the hospital.
- Marvin Harrison owns two bars at 28th and Cambridge Streets, about 4 blocks away from the shooting. It is believed that his family owns a car wash at the location of the shooting, however that detail is unconfirmed.
- Six bullet were casings found at the scene of the crime, and were linked to Marvin Harrison's gun.
- In regards to the shooting on 25th and Thompson Streets, Liuetenant Frank Vitore claims that Marvin Harrison is being interviewed as a possible witness. He is not the subject of the investigation and he is not the only one being interviewed.[6][7]
