KQRC is a radio station in Leavenworth, Kansas, which serves the Kansas City metropolitan area. Their morning show, hosted by shock jock Johnny Dare, is regularly top ranked in Arbitron ratings. Its transmitter is located in Shawnee, Kansas.
The station, with the brand name 98.9 The Rock, broadcasts an Active Rock/ Album Oriented Rock format consisting of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Acts. They tend to play heavier rock than modern rock/alternative rock sister station KRBZ with such artists as Pearl Jam, Godsmack, Staind and Shinedown mixed with older rock acts like Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Def Leppard and Van Halen. Metallica is frequently played, and at 9:00 p.m., The Rock features "Mandatory Metallica", with three consecutive songs by the band. Monday Through Saturday, at 10 P.M., the station plays "Cyber Sets," which is a series of songs that is submitted online by fans. At 10 P.M. one cyber set is picked, the submitter called, and if they answer, they are awarded prizes. If the submitter does not answer, then the listeners can call in, and one caller gets the prizes. At 11 P.M., "The Pit" airs, which is an hour of heavy metal, and death metal. On Sundays, at 10P.M., the radio program Hard Drive is aired, and then the rest of the radio stations hours are normal.
Every summer, KQRC hosts a giant (50,000 people) all-day music festival called Rockfest. Past headliners include Godsmack, Staind, Seether, and The Stone Temple Pilots.
[edit] History
The 98.9 MHz frequency shuffled between formats when it first went on the air in 1974. Starting out as a country station, it tried to topple KBEQ in the Top-40 market in the mid 1980s, but to no success. In 1987, The Wave debuted, becoming one of a multitude of adult contemporary stations. However that station also did not last, against longtime competitors KUDL and KMXV.
Since debuting in 1992, The Rock has lived up to its name in the stability of its format, surviving a rock format shuffle in 1997 that claimed KYYS "KY-102". Despite success, the station has seen many program directors come and go.
