[edit] Plot
In this episode, the radio station KOZY 102.1 is sponsoring a "Halloween Haunt". The children are excited about Halloween, except for Cartman who begins to celebrate the fact that it is only two months to Christmas. The fifth graders soon play a prank on them. Stan decides to prank them back to retaliate. To get back at the fifth graders, the children decide to dig up Kyle's dead grandmother, Cleo Broflovski, much to his dismay.
Meanwhile, Korn are driving in their "Mystery Machine", in a style reminiscent of Scooby-Doo. As Jonathan plays a game, the bus crashes when the band spots "Pirate Ghosts" on the road. After digging up the corpse, the boys leave it at the harbor, where the corpse is promptly eaten by a stray dog. At the docks, the children meet Korn, who have been wandering around. Soon, Priest Maxi appears and condemns the band for appearing in town. The following morning, the grave watchers appear at Mrs. Broflovski's house and report the news that Grandma Cleo's body is missing. The grave watchers then presume that her corpse has been stolen by a necrophiliac.
Cartman receives a lifesized blow-up Antonio Banderas Love Doll. Even though it is his mother's, he believes it is his early Christmas present and subsequently elated, he goes to town with it all blown up. The children return to the docks in their costumes hoping to win the contest for best costume, with Kenny wearing an ED-209 robot costume. To Kenny's disappointment, everyone is able to clearly recognize him. They find that the corpse is missing and go to Korn with their findings. Korn "infers" that the missing body is connected to the appearance of the Pirate Ghosts. At the town square, the grave watchers are explaining the concept of necrophilia very explicitly until the Pirate Ghosts show up and terrorize the town. A few citizens are blown up and one ghost decapitates two others, making it seem that Priest Maxi was right about the holiday being "Satanic".
Korn and the children go investigate the "Mystery of the Pirate Ghosts and the missing body." After a few mishaps, it is revealed that Priest Maxi was involved with the Pirate Ghosts. The mystery of Cleo Broflovski's missing corpse is solved when the dog regurgitates the body, whole. The Halloween Haunt goes as planned, with Korn playing "Falling Away from Me", a big contrast to their cheery personality in the episode. The boys get their revenge against the 5th graders while Korn is playing, scaring them with the corpse. Unfortunately, Kenny's ED-209 costume doesn't win him first prize in the best Halloween Costume Competition, and he ends up getting killed during the closing credits.
[edit] Censorship
- The part where Cartman sticks his hand in animal intestines was cut in syndication.
- The constant erect penis on the Antonio Banderas blow-up doll is not shown in the syndicated version.
[edit] Korn's appearance
Korn's album Issues was released shortly after this episode aired and featured the song "Falling Away from Me" in this episode. The band contacted the show's creators saying they wanted to premiere their first single on South Park. All members of Korn voice themselves.
[edit] Cultural references
- Many phrases and actions in this episode are references to Scooby-Doo; additionally, at many points a remake of the background theme can be heard.
- When being pursued by the angry mob, Korn assume "form of corn," a reference to the Wonder Twins.
- As with the previous Halloween episodes, "Pinkeye" and "Spookyfish", this episode uses the same opening. It is the last one to do so. "Hell on Earth 2006" uses the regular cut out characters intro with the techno theme tune.
- Wendy winning the costume contest for her Chewbacca costume is a throwback to "Pinkeye", where she also won the contest with her Chewbacca costume, even though almost everyone else had the exact same Chewbacca costume.
- This episode marks the reformatting of the disclaimer from the start of episodes.
- Alabama Man, the toy from the previous episode "Chinpokomon" can be seen in Cartman's Christmas catalogue along with a Phillip doll from "Cow Days" and a Mr. Hankey Playset as seen in "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo."
- In the movie RoboCop, the robot ED-209, which is the costume worn by Kenny, malfunctions and kills a man named Kinney. Later a fascismile of the same robot appears in episode 604 as Chef's malfunctioning new TV.
- There are various references to past singles from Korn, including "Blind" (The pirate ghost leader, Captain Blind) and "Clown" (Fieldy says that he hates to see clowns cry.)
- A transformed Leonard Maltin (from the "Mecha-Streisand" episode) costume can be seen walking around the docks in one scene.
[edit] Continuity
- When the group splits up, Munky originally joins the group on the left, but is later seen with the other group.
