Untouchables is the fifth album by Korn. It was officially released on June 11, 2002 and featured the Grammy-winning single "Here to Stay", as well as "Thoughtless" and "Alone I Break". The album marks their second to use alternative metal in place of the hip hop-influenced nu metal of their early albums, although there are some nu metal songs such as "Bottled Up Inside". New techniques were used on this album as well: Untouchables featured elements like undistorted guitars and electronics on some songs, giving the album an overall mellow but spooky feel, with one critic calling it a "purgatorial symphony". Songs of this variety include "Hollow Life" and "Hating". This is the only Korn album that does not feature bagpipes. Untouchables debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 with 434,000 copies.[1] The album received positive reviews from respected music magazines.[2]
The album was leaked onto the Internet five months before its official release date. After the leak, there was much speculation about the authenticity of the album's material, and whether or not songs would be added, removed, or modified on the official release. Upon the album's official release, however, the only differences between what was available on the Internet and the official album were the songs' titles (with the exception of "Here to Stay"), chronological order of tracks and the intro to "Beat It Upright" and outro of "Embrace" removed for unknown reasons. Not available via the Internet before the album's release, however, was a remixed version of "Here to Stay," which was included on the initial pressing of the album for the United States, dubbed as the "limited edition." Untouchables was also released in a "clean" version, which used a form of backmasking to remove profanity and excluded the song "Beat It Upright". The album has been named, by Korn, on many occasions, as their favourite to date.

[edit] Demos
In addition to these songs, Korn also wrote several more songs for this album that ended up being scrapped. Excerpts of these songs can be heard in "making of" style footage of this album which can be found on the internet. Another unfinished demo, Did My Time, was later finished and released on this album's follow-up, Take a Look in the Mirror. This is Korn's only studio album which does not include any bagpipes.
[edit] After the official release
Untouchables sold over 400,000 copies in its first week, but was unable to surpass the sales from The Eminem Show, so thus its debut came at #2 on Billboard. The band blamed internet piracy for the drop in sales, but most blamed it for the band's change in songwriting since Follow The Leader. Despite initial cold reception from fans, many well respected music magazines regarded it as Korn's "best work". Eventually, the fan reception started to rise over time.
