Follow the Leader (FoLLoW The LEADEЯ as type-set on album cover) is Korn's third album and a departure from their first two albums in sound and production. The album has sold over 9,000,000 copies worldwide. It was released on August 18, 1998. It is generally recognized as their breakthrough album, and the album that ultimately ushered nu metal and re-ushered Heavy metal into the mainstream. At over 5 million copies sold in the U.S. and 4 million copies sold out of the U.S., it is their best selling album and is also featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
The album features numerous guest vocalists, including Ice Cube on "Children of the Korn", Tre Hardson of The Pharcyde on "Cameltosis" and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst on "All in the Family". Actor Cheech Marin provides vocals on "Earache My Eye", a cover of the song from the Cheech and Chong movie Up in Smoke, with the rest of the band trading instruments for the song.
The album begins on track 13, following 12 tracks of silence. No official explanation for this has been given. One idea thrown around is that it forms a minute of silence for Justin, a child with intestinal cancer whose dying wish was to meet the members of Korn, and was able to do so via the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The song "Justin" from the album is also about him.
The B-Sides "Camel Song" (released on the "End Of Days" soundtrack) and "I Can Remember" (on the "Got The Life" single) were both recorded during the album sessions.

[edit] The album artwork
The front cover (the girl in the red dress playing with her friends at the end of a cliff) was illustrated by long-time Spawn penciller Todd McFarlane and inspired the beginning sequence to the music video for Freak On a Leash. There are a few differences though. There is no security booth seen, but there is an expanding trail of more children not seen in the video. The disk tray picture is the front cover in black and white but without "Korn" and "Follow the Leader" seen. The picture in the booklet shows the band in a green room. Jonathan Davis is seen tied up with strings and there is a girl behind him. The rest of the band is on the other side of the room sitting down on couches and tables (except Head, who is standing up instead). If seen closely, the pictures on the wall are paintings of naked women. The floor can easily tell that the room is run-down. The rest of the album booklet shows special thanks notes and credits covering black and white clouds.
