[edit] Press Corps?

Hi PZFUN,

One of these days we *will* manage to meet up in New York. I notice you don't go anywhere without your camera; please consider adding yourself to the list of photogs at m:Press Corps, and adding events (games, festivals, rallies?) you're thinking about attending to the list of events there. [edit] FA candidate

Hi. Can you, please, look at this article again? Was it improved (some more complicated info on international tension, on her death, etc. added)? I said more on its lead section on that article's FA candidate page. BTW your questions also were dealt with. Cmapm 09:02, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The butterfly effect

A butterfly flitting in china can cause the hurricane that strikes San Francisco.

A complaint to a waitress can provide clues to solving the riddle of how to create a Simplified Ruleset. See if you can spot your contribution(s) :-)

Hmm, though mind you, come to think of it, its really subtle now. I could still do that a lot better.

Let me ponder on this.

[edit] Canal images

I moved the image of the canal crossings to make room for the pre-canal painting, which fits more topically in the 'history' section. Actually, I think the intro could probably be expanded somewhat, which would deal with all the format issues.--Pharos 18:18, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thank you for you message. I'll be more careful :)

I agree that there should be spaces between pinyin syllables. However, according to 'Basic rules for Hanyu pinyin Orthography' (Chinese national standard no. GB/T 16159-1996), pinyin syllables of geographical names, biographical names and er-ized words should be written connected.

[edit] Re: Your revert

Hi Páll. It is part of the names of the stations as at the entrances/exits. Adding the word station also helps differentiating station and line articles which share the same name. Thanks. — Instantnood 08:03, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Page moves

Hello again. I understand you created most of the articles, but as I know the way of presentation has never been agreed upon. Some new articles on new lines or stations are created with another format. I agree we have to reach a consensus and standardised all the articles. Let's keep all articles as they are at the time being until a consensus is reached. There was actually already a discussion at the talk page of WP:HKWNB. — Instantnood 08:09, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

If I have not misunderstood you have agreed not to make further edit or change the titles during the discussion. Please keep the articles as they are, and please don't move [1] or revert them [2] [3] [4]. Many thanks. — Instantnood 08:40, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

I don't think the page moves and changes to the format of the bolded title in articles have anything to do with the previous ArbCom case that I was involved. And FYI, the case was closed without any decision or action taken. — Instantnood 10:22, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Notes

The notes have been on the pages for a really long time, and I'm just trying to keep them as they were while moving the lists to templates. I hope they did not scare you. :-D — Instantnood 23:28, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

The notes were not added by me, but I spent loads of efforts to keep them as they were while creating the templates. Would you mind discuss it before trashing them? Many thanks. — Instantnood 23:32, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)
IMHO they provide useful and essential information that is not presented in the lists. Yes I made them more accurate and easier to read, and I helped rephrasing the notes, but I was not the one who started creating them. It'd better to discuss it at a common place with more people to participate, rather than a personal conversation between you and I. :-) — Instantnood 23:44, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] SA-geo-stub

Hi - I'm sorry about this, but I've just reverted the change you made to SA-geo-stub. Stub templates are meant to be as unobtrusive as possible, which is why none of them (not even stub) have boxes around them. The less space they take up, the better everyone seems to like it (there are frequent discussions about the general look of stub templates at Template talk:Stub and at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting). [edit] History of South Africa and Apartheid articles

Hi -- Your work on the History of South Africa article is very impressive! I did a little work on the images -- hope it was helpful. In the FA discussion, User:Maveric149 has volunteered to move some of the apartheid material out of the history article and into the Apartheid article. I think that's the right thing to do. It will probably improve the apartheid article immeasurably, and maybe get it out of the revert-war rut that's apparently been taking up all the energy that could have gone into improving the article. Do you agree with this whole course of action? I've left a message on Maveric149's talk page offering to help. If you'd like to make this a group effort, maybe you could post there too.--Bcrowell 23:46, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

"Hey there, thanks for getting back to me. Of course, moving some content off the HSA article and into the apartheid one is fine! Looking forward to seeing the results." (from Pall, quoted from my own talk page)
Hi Pall -- I'd like to talk more about what we want to happen, before going ahead and doing a lot of extensive edits that might not have a consensus behind them. I'm posting on the HSA article's talk page to try to get a discussion going, and I'll also put a heads-up on the apartheid article's talk page.--Bcrowell 21:33, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Concerning the "bloody image" in the article "Hong Kong"

I don't know what the article looks like on your computer screen, but on my screen (resolution: 800×600 or 1024×768), I see a huge empty space under the heading "History", which is why I moved the so-called "bloody image". Did my edit really make the history section turn into a column two words wide on your computer and looks horrible? Riddle | Talk 09:57, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

This is what the article looks like on my computer after your edit at 0940 : Image: Screenshot of the article 'Hong Kong' (0940, 21 Jun 2005; 1024 by 768).png (1024×768). Do you think that the empty space under the heading "History" is not a problem?

This is what it looks like after my edit at 0742: Image:Screenshot of the article 'Hong Kong' (0742, 21 Jun 2005; 1024 by 768).png

By the way, what is your screen resolution? Riddle | Talk 10:28, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I see you have added more images to the article. If this is an attempt to solve the viewing problem, I can tell you it does not work. The article looks almost the same as before, with two more images below the "Old Hong Kong" image. If you insist that those images should be aligned to the right, maybe you can try moving them downward (on my computer, this solves the dead space problem). Riddle | Talk 01:50, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Btw, does your self-nomination count as one vote? -- Jerry Crimson Mann 1 July 2005 19:47 (UTC)

You added two links to the following sentence: " Hong Kong has one of the world's least restricted economies, and is the world's 10th largest trading entity and 11th largest banking centre. "

I clicked the links, and those pages say Hong Kong is the 10th largest exporter of service, instead of tradiing entity, and 11th largest stock market, as oppose to banking. Is there any other information to justify trading is the 10th, and banking is 11th? — Instantnood July 4, 2005 20:51 (UTC)

 • As yours is the remaining opposition vote on this FAC, I'd ask that you speak now if you have any specific POV issues. I would be only too happy to address your concerns, so please feel free to jot down quotes from the article that you feel are POV (either on my talk page, the FAC, or the article talk page) and I'll address them accordingly. [edit] South African dialling codes

If you reply, please write here, not on my talk page. A thread split between talk pages is very difficult to follow.

Excellent work producing List of South African calling codes - well done. Re my changes to it:

 • My knowledge of South Africa is not good enough to tell whether Giyani or Valezia (for example) is the larger. So some of the rows may need some reorganisation.
 • I was glad to see how many blue links appeared but I have not checked all for ambiguity. Certainly George needs dealing with.

Regarding the separate "0xx (South Africa Calling Code)" articles and Template:South Africa Calling Code. Here I am much more dubious:

 • The titles are bad, they should be: "South African area code zz" (without a leading zero)
 • They are contrary to policy. See Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Area codes. Articles for the North American area codes are usually justified - each one covers a larger area and they have a complex histories of splits and overlays. None of these apply to South Africa.

We could start a new deletion policy debate for them but my recommendation is: stop now, don't create any more - just work on merging the list into South African Telephone Numbering Plan.

Incidentally, why is 5363 De Aar singled out for inclusion? There are many other four digit codes that could be included.

Once again, well done for starting the list. -- RHaworth 2005 July 5 13:51 (UTC)

Oh dear. I have now found out that your article was a fork. -- RHaworth 2005 July 5 14:33 (UTC)

[edit] Suburbs

Unless you intend to expand them, why not create those Johannesburg suburbs as a list (and redirecting the names to it) rather than separate pages? People would still be able to make a page if they want to add info. --IByte 7 July 2005 20:23 (UTC)

 • OK, fine if you expand them. --IByte 7 July 2005 20:30 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Hong Kong

Pàll, are you busy? It looks to me like the FAC vote could use some attention, it could roll off any time, presumably. Three people are still objecting it's too long, from before we shortened it. I've written to Harro5 and Phoenix2 to point out that it's shorter now. (I'd rather not write to Nichalp, the third voter, for reasons of my own.) And two voters, Piotrus and me, have left minor objections to the Lead section (too short, no history in it), and undertaken to support if that is addressed. That's two opposes that wouldn't cost much to turn into supports. I'm not familiar enough with the article to revise the Lead myself, I guess. Bishonen | talk 16:12, 10 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] In The News

Hi. You recently edited the In The News section of the Main Page with an edit summary of "It launched at midnight in every timezone, not syncronous with the UK", speaking in relation to the latest Harry Potter book. This is incorrect. As far as I know, the book only launched at midnight local time in the regions where the book is a Scholastic edition. Elsewhere, including Australia (where I live), the book went on sale at the precise moment it did in the United Kingdom, which meant a brisk early release of 7am (Perth time). - Mark 11:37, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Champagne Castle

Hi. Can you explain why you moved Champagne Castle to Champagne Castle, KwaZulu-Natal? The naming conventions being used by WikiProject Mountains is not to use the convention in use for inhabited locations. Is there another Champagne Castle that you know about? The project convention for disambiguating mountains is to put the province/state (rarely the country) in parenthesis rather than use the comma notation which implies a location inhabited by people. Hi -- I just noticed that some wholesale vandalism of the History of South Africa in the apartheid era a couple of days ago went undetected until today. An anon replaced the entire text of the article with the old text of the Apartheid article, including the bit about "diaspora Jews." [edit] Stop!

We do not put references to featured articles into the articles themselves. It is metadata that belongs on the talk page. →Raul654 01:24, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

There is however the slightly odd situation in that we are now showing little stars next to the interwiki language links for an article where that article is featured on another language wiki, yet we don't indicate the status for the language you are actually reading. See for example the comet article which has five stars for FeaturedArticle status in other languages and a page full of notices on the talk page.
Perhaps the solution is to allow self interwikis so that the Link FA template can be used on a dummy English language link for an article on the English wiki.-- Solipsist 11:43, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
I'd be in favour of adding some sort of a template to the FA articles. Smaller then the talk one - perhaps just sth like the barnstart with the words FA (like a medal) - but sth should be there to indicate their status. You may want to comment on: Wikipedia_talk:Featured_articles#FA_template_on_main_article_page.3F. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 11:59, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

It's about 50% done now, so you might want to start the cleanup and copyedit that is sorely needed, since I just translated away without too many concerns for style. I'll do it myself if you don't want to, but I'll have to wait until after I have translated the rest of the article, which might still take a while, because now I'm in the middle of a heavily technical section - and I am not a railgeek in the slightest. -- grm_wnr Esc 19:37, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

I think you did a good job in cleaning up, and I see that the new version has gone live now. I've redirected the temp page there. Also, I resurrected the longer "trains" and "depots" section for the subarticles you linked to - no sense in letting them buried in the history of a temp page. I've slapped them with cleanup. Also, I'll pass on the translation of the U-Bahn linie articles for now - for a topic I'm not really interested in, the U-bahn article itself was hard work, so I'm a bit tired of that topic at the moment. That might change rapidly, however. I'm keeping it in mind, in any case. -- grm_wnr Esc 03:55, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hong Kong at night

You got rid of my Hong Kong at night shot. I disagree with this. I think it's the first image that comes to mind when a lot of people think of Hong Kong, and so it's worth including in the article. Isewell 16:11, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

I understand and somewhat agree, but only a certain number of images fit on a page. The night shot was displacing all the other images in the article, and since the whole is greater than its parts, the image had to be cut. My apologies. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 18:09, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Arbitration case Instantnood 2 closed

The Arbitration case on which you commented, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Instantnood 2, has closed. The Committee's decision is as follows:

Instantnood, Huaiwei, and SchmuckyTheCat are all placed on Probation for topics relating to China for a year. This means that any sysop, in the exercise of their judgement for reasonable cause, documented in a section of this decision, may ban them from any article which relates to China which they disrupt by inappropriate editing. In doing so, the sysop must notify the banned user on their talk page, and a note must also placed on WP:AN/I. They may post suggestions on the talk page of any article from which they are banned from editing. This remedy is crafted to permit them to continue to edit articles in these areas which are not sources of controversy. In addition to this, Instantnood is restricted to proposing only one page move, poll of editors, or policy change relating to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese) per week, and reminded to make useful edit summaries.

[edit] Hugo Chavez image locations

I appreciate your efforts to make the article look better. However, I can say that most people working on the article like it the way User:Silence has positioned them (i.e., alternating between left and right). In addition, you are deleting image attributions in the image captions. You can understand how this can be contrued as vandalism, since we need to display such attributions in order to use the images. I used to prefer having images in one long column, by I was won over by Silence's method. If you really want the locations in one column, please raise the issue first on the talk page, where we can vote on it. Please don't make such changes without discussion. Thanks. Saravask 15:15, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

It is not construed as vandalism because the images are available for use as long as the copyright information is displayed on the image page. Also, I am following the standard set by every other featured article which is to have the images on the right and at a standard 250px. What ever happened to being bold? [edit] State admits USG denied Red Cross/Crescent access to detainees?

I feel very strongly that your edits to the main page's 'in the news' section were not appropriate. I can't find any headline story on the major news network websites or press releases/transcripts from state.gov that support your statement. Although I am sure that it was unintentional, some people could view that page and get the impression that wikipedia and its editors have an ideological axe to grind with the way that the USG has handled detainee rights and options for their legal recourse.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Polamstationoutside.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Polamstationoutside.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use article name or fairuse. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. [edit] Usenet

I just thought you might be interested in what Usenet is, so here are the first two paragraphs from the article :-)

Usenet is a distributed Internet discussion system that evolved from a general purpose UUCP network of the same name. It was conceived by Duke University graduate students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979. Users, sometimes called Usenetters, read and post email-like messages (called "articles") to a number of distributed newsgroups, categories that resemble bulletin board systems in most respects. The medium is sustained among a large number of servers, which store and forward messages to one another. Usenet is of significant cultural importance in the networked world, having given rise to, or popularized, many widely recognized concepts and terms such as "FAQ" and "spam".

Usenet is one of the oldest computer network communications systems still in widespread use. It was established in 1980 following experiments the previous year, over a decade before the World Wide Web was introduced and the general public was admitted to the Internet. It was originally conceived as a "poor man's ARPANET," employing UUCP to offer mail and file transfers, as well as announcements through the newly developed news software. This system, developed at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University, was called USENET to emphasize its creators' hope that the USENIX organization would take an active role in its operation (Daniel et al, 1980).

[edit] ITN

Hello, PZFUN. Since you insist on posting inadequately updated wikipages on ITN, may I ask you to please at least follow guideline # 1 on Wikipedia:In the news section on the Main Page and post relevant headlines on Current events, please ? And, please don't forget the external newslinks. I also want to say that I disagree that inadequately updated wikipages "being on the main page is the best way to encourage growth". The place to encourage growth of news-related articles is 'Current events', not the MainPage. MainPage is where we feature good contents of Wikipedia. Headlines can move from Current events to ITN after some decent growth, IMO. Substubs and articles merely updated with one or two sentences, IMO, aren't good enough to get featured on the MainPage. On the other hand, topic-wise, both your recent additions to ITN are good choices. I just think it's too early. As a reader, I get interested and excited when sth new appears on ITN, and gets very annoyed and disappointed when I click and can't find much updated materials to read. Hence my revert. -- PFHLai 23:32, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bolding in CPU

Re: Central processing unit

Hello, I saw that you were the one who added the bolding to the CPU article. I have removed it, as I felt that it made the article very difficult to read and was unncessary. No other article uses bolding in such a way, and it gives a bad feel to the article to have someone "shouting at you." While the Manual of Stype does not specifically state when not to bold, I also feel that it states when one should bold, and this is not one of them. What do you think? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 00:30, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

I think what I said in Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Central_processing_unit - that in an article with so many acronyms and terms outside normal english usage, limited use of bolding is needed just to make the article parsable to the lay. Note though, that I was not the person to add it originally, that was the main editor of the article, User:Uberpenguin. And er... article content/formatting debates are best held on the talk page in question, generally. --zippedmartin 00:45, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
I've largely reverted your bolding and image spacing changes on CPU. See the talk page for my justifications. -- uberpenguin 14:44, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cape Town map

Dear Pall: I'm currently working on the map, it seems to be taking me longer than I anticipated but I'll get it finished shortly; sorry for the delay. I have a question to ask you, though: Should the Peninsula Expressway roads be shown on the map (they aren't listed on any of the other three maps) and if so, how do you want me to show them on the map? [edit] moving stuff around

Hi, sorry about all the redirects. Is there any way of moving articles without creating loads of redirects? There had been a discussion on Talk:Provinces of South Africa before I started moving all the provinces' pages - everyone agreed with the move. But sorry if it's created problems Joziboy 27 March 2006, 09:27 (UTC)

Oh, I see you've been moving them back. You might want to comment on the proposed moves on Talk:Gauteng Province and Talk:KwaZulu-Natal Province Joziboy 27 March 2006, 09:31 (UTC)
I don't have much preference for one or the other, but at least Joziboy talked about his proposed moves. What is your reason for moving them back ? Wizzy 10:25, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Because every single instance where the provinces' names are mentioned would have to be re-written. I don't mind changing Western Cape Province to, say, Western Cape — but I think the idea of having parenthesies in a province's name is incredibly cumbersome everytime they are to be mentioned. Basically, I favour keeping them where they are until there's some kind of strategy to deal with all the re-directs such moves make. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 16:52, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Erhm, the only one which needed a dab term in brackets was Free State, anyway... And it doesn't really need them, if you add a dab notice at the top of what's now the Free State article. I've removed this as the United Kingdom article doesn't have FA status. The star on the article was an error and i've removed that as well.

[edit] Cape Town history section

Hi Páll, just wondering if you will be back on the Cape Town history section. You said something about continuing tomorrow, but it's been a while! Cheers, Zaian 20:10, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:FARC

Hi, I removed three of your listings there, but realized I had neglected to let you know personally. There's been a lot of discussions lately about improving the FARC process and one that has come out is that it is important to detail the deficiencies of an article on it's talk page to give the authors there a chance to fix them up and wait a reasonable amount of time for that, depending on the level of fixing requested. Better yet is after detailing the deficiencies, try to fix them the best you can and reference your talk page remarks to draw other editors in. So please leave detailed messages on the article's talk pages first. It is in the guidelines, but I know those can get a little tedious and easy to miss, hence this message. Otherwise, keep up the good work. - Taxman Talk 22:34, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] South African Corruption Levels

Please tell me why you removed the political corruption levels from the South African main page. There is nothing incorrect in those values and they come from a credible source. If you moved those facts to a more appropriate location you would find me in agreement.

However, I get the impression that you have removed them simply because you don't like the hard truth they reveal. I was about to correct many things on that South African page (with known and provable facts) but if unsubstantiated political bias is allowed to overpower researched facts then what's the point? - Eltharian Talk 23 April 2006

[edit] ==========================================

Thank you for answering me at my Eltharian Talk. Okay, I understand what you are saying that it belongs on a political page, but I don't agree. Corruption levels speak of how well the country is run as a matter of fact. It does not delve into the differences of opinion between parties (which I think is indeed appropriate for a political page).

Of course, corruption levels imply things about certain ruling parties which I imagine is why you want to remove it. BUT this is only an implication - readers should be able to judge for themselves what those figures mean.

If one uses such arguments (i.e. that anything slightly or vaguely reflective of a political party should be removed to a seperate political page) then much of the entire South Africa page needs to be removed or re-written. Crime is a typical example - I can't see how you can see to keep the crime paragraphs (which vaguely implies a mismanagement of the police and/or judicial system) but not see to keep corruption. After all, it is political corruption that may well give rise to the mismanagements of those departments and high crime. Of course, political corruption also gives tacit validation to much crime in the country - one only needs to watch TV reality shows which interview gangs or criminals to understand the excuses they use to convince themselves of their behaviour. Corruption and crime are the same disease! Social circumstances can not be divorced from political ones.

If you will allow me I would like to quote from Junius' first public letter to the people of Britain, in 21 Jan 1769, who were going through their own socio-political upheaval at the time.

The ruin or prosperity of a state depends so much upon the administration of its government, that, to be acquainted with the merit of a ministry, we need only observe the condition of the people. If we see them obedient to the laws, prosperous in their industry, united at home, and respected abroad, we may reasonably presume that their affairs are conducted by men of experience, abilities and virtue. If, on the contrary, we see a universal spirit of distrust and dissatisfaction, a rapid decay of trade, dissensions in all parts of the empire, and a total loss of respect in the eyes of foreign powers, we may pronounce, without hesitation, that the government of that country is weak, distracted, and corrupt.

I hope I am beginning to convince you. After all, looking at your profile, you should easily be able to testify to the low crime in Hong Kong and draw the same correlation with its clean corruption levels - 8.3.

(BTW, I am copying this discussion to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:South_Africa to invite others' views.)

Hi, I just noticed you removed some changes I had made to the South Africa article, after discussion with other editors on the talk page with the edit summary:

Can I request that you check articles' talk pages before calling changes 'strange'? I have reverted to my version; if you felt like changing it back, I very much hope you would discuss it with me first, either here or on the article's talk page. Thanks. Guinnog 10:31, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

I see you have once again reverted without discussion, in spite of my request above. Can you please reply this time, as this is really not the way things are done here. [edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

[edit] Your recent deletion nominations

For example Yisroel Avrohom Portugal and Kiddush Club: you don't appear to have actioned the AfDs correctly, as none of them have AfD notices on the articles themselves. --BillC 09:47, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] notability of hasidic persons

I have noticed that you have placed for AFD many Jewish topics and personalities. While some may not be highly notable, conventional tests of notability that you may be used to may not apply.

Particularly, Googling is not valid for multiple reasons:

 • These names often have alternative spellings as they are of Hebrew/Yiddish origin.
 • As stated at Wikipedia:Google, search engine testing is only really valid for modern subjects, while many of those who you nominated are not
 • Many of these personalities come from and particularly relate to communities where use of the internet is not prominent, as opposed to those of, say, American pop stars.

But this doesn't mean the character is not notable. It may be advisable in the future to query WikiProject Judaism before assuming the non-notability of a topic you are unfamiliar with and where the search engine test cannot be applied.

jnothman talk 10:34, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I just made a keep recommendation on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dovber of Mezeritch, where you have nominated what appears to be one of the absolutely most important rabbis in Chassidic Judaism. I looked at some of your other nominations, and don't know whether I will even bother to vote, as most of these are sure to be shot down by users more familiar with this topic than I am. Several of these rabbis have a number of tales about them in Buber's Tales of the Hasidim. At least a couple could be found in the Jewish Encyclopedia, and as those I found were located under very different forms of their names, this is likely to be the case with some of the rest as well. I am not involved in WikiProject Judaism, but agree with what jnothman writes above about consulting people who know more about a topic before starting a debate on AfD. Just as with Arabic, Indian and other topics which come up on AFD quite often, there is the problem with Jewish topics of transliteration. I think you should have done a bit more research before nominating these articles. Sure, some of these should have more references, but for that, unless you have serious reasons to believe that something is a hoax or libel, use unreferenced to begin with, wait a little while, then nominate.
It is not too late for you to withdraw these nominations. In fact, it would clearly demonstrate your good faith if you did so as soon as some good keep arguments or references appear. up+land 11:12, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Your lack of research before nominating Jewish community organisations for AFD is also astounding. Young Judaea for instance has many online references to its membership of 7000, which clearly makes it "utterly non-notable". Don't nominate articles for deletion on the basis of their quality; for that, see Wikipedia:Cleanup resources, etc. jnothman talk 11:24, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent AFD nominations

When I saw how Izak treated you after the last afd I thought he was out of line, but now after seeing all of the other articles you have nominated for deletion I am beginning to think his attacks were warranted. If you had done any research into the subject you would understand Hasidic rebbes are indeed notable. While I disagree with certain people that suggest one should have an understanding of a subject before editing an article about it, I do agree that one should have at least a vague awareness of the wider topic before nominating an article for deletion. Please reconsider you recent nominations. Thank you.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 12:46, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Pzfun, can you explain what's going on, please? Most or all of these are clearly legitimate articles. SlimVirgin (talk) 13:44, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
I've removed the tags from the articles you tagged today, which is not to say there are no legitimate deletion possibilities among them, because I didn't read them all, but a brief glance suggested they were okay. I'm sorry to have to do that. SlimVirgin (talk) 13:56, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

My own random sample saw several articles that actually might even meet CSD criteria. I might have looked at a different set of articles than the set Slimvirgin looked at, though. In any case, to prevent fighting, please hang on there and let me do some investigating, if that's ok with you. DO Talk with me before taking initiatives. I understand you're angry, but you did ask me to come in and look (which is very wise of you!), so let me do my job and I'll see what I can do! :-) Kim Bruning 16:02, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I didn't look through them all carefully, so there may indeed be some that were worth nominating. It was the number of them, and it coming so soon after the row with IZAK, that concerned me, so I just automatically closed them with speedy keep, though I did have to draw the line at Eurojews and left that one open. If others feel they should be renominated, I have no problem with it. My concern was more the circumstances than the articles as such (though many were clearly notable, it has to be said). SlimVirgin (talk) 16:12, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your note

Sorry, PZFUN, I just saw your note. I'm sorry this disturbed you; that wasn't my intention. I was bewildered, as were several others (as you can see from the notes on your talk page) about these articles being nominated, because many were clearly notable, well-known figures or organizations within the Jewish community. That, combined with the nominations following so closely on the heels of your dispute with IZAK, made the noms seem inappropriate, and to be honest, they looked like a WP:POINT. Perhaps you can say why you wanted to delete an article about, for example, one of the most important rabbis in Hasidic Judaism. You can see how that would look a little odd. However, once again, I apologize if the way I closed the nominations upset you. I've left a note on AN/I if you want to comment there. SlimVirgin (talk) 16:17, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

It wasn't a point, and if these people are genuinely so important, I am surprised that not a single one of them have any references. Perhaps, though, you could explain why you speedy kept them without discussion, when there were even copyvios that have been speedy kept. I am exceedingly worried that there seems to be a group of Jewish-POV pushers that band together to thwart any attempt to clean out their articles. Many of these important rabbi articles were either copyvios, horribly POV, or advertisements for books. There is no question that some of these people deserve articles, but not these articles, they are almost upsettingly poor quality to be found on Wikipedia and been edited so many times, while many of them have absolutely no place on Wikipedia. We do not need an article about every 10 Jewish people who get together and call themselves a group. There has to be some limit. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 18:13, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, I agree with the issue of sources and quality of writing, and I'm very sorry I upset you. I was trying to keep the peace by making the issue go away, at least until the heat goes out of this situation. I've already started the process of tidying the writing and requesting sources. I've also left a note on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism asking others to do the same. I think the problem may be that some of these figures are noted mostly in books, and if they're on the Web, there may be several ways to transliterate the names. But it may also be the case that the sources just don't exist, and if that turns out to be the case, I'll renominate them for deletion myself if that will help. SlimVirgin (talk) 18:37, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Not a problem, now that you've explained, I just thought it might have been a personal attack. No hard feelings :) However, there are some that you kept that need to be deleted as some are very unnotable (a book published in the 1800's with no hits, a Jewish student union with no Google hits, a Jewish summer camp). How do you recommend we re-list those that are not controversial? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 18:43, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi Páll, sorry for the delay in responding; I just saw this. The others have been relisted, it seems, by Dr. Zak. I'm not sure which one was the book, but I'll take another look. I tried to e-mail you when I heard your user page had been deleted, but you don't have an e-mail address specified. I hope you'll come back soon and won't let this business affect you; it was a misunderstanding and it'll blow over, as these things always do. In the meantime, I'll be working slowly on the rabbi pages, and I'll relist any that I can't find sources for, so that side of things will be dealt with. Please do come back. SlimVirgin (talk) 11:00, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
A grouped nomination of the summer camps and a second nomination of the NFTY regional pages seems like an adequate move. Really what it should be for those camps is a merge into something like North American Jewish summer camps. Remember that there is no cabal here. There are, however, interested and knowledgable editors who do know a lot about these topics. This whole situation needs a big dose of good faith and civility from any involved party. You say we do not need an article about every 10 Jewish people who get together and call themselves a group. You fail to realise that these groups, while created by a small number of people have expanded to, as shown in the AfDs, tens of thousands of members, clearly showing notability. Wes! • Tc 21:01, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
As I have detailed elsewhere, "that not a single one of them have any references" is simply untrue, so just be careful when using exactly the same justification for nomination on 16 articles. jnothman talk 01:59, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
None of them do have any references except for their own websites, which does not qualify them as being referenced on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Reference. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 02:01, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Sorry: I had accidentally placed that comment in the wrong thread. Now moved. jnothman talk 02:05, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] PZFUN and Jewish Summer camps

Why is it very hard to assume that you are acting in Good Faith when you basically nominated the entire contents (save one) of Category: Jewish summer camps for afd, but left the non-Jewish ones in Category:Summer camps alone? How can you claim WP:POINT? It's very hard to assume GF, this was a non-deniable, sustained, and discriminatory attack on a specifc population. If you were so worried about article quality, you would have cleaned up the whole summer camp cat. But you didn't. You can continue the discussion here on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. --Shuki 23:57, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Because I was cleaning out articles in , not summer camp articles. You are welcome to list articles in the summer camp category for deletion as well if you think they merit it. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 00:03, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
If I may comment, before hitting such a large group, I would check to see the context it's in. If the entire category is similar, then I think it makes more sense to raise the issue elsewhere instead of summarily dumping them all as AfD. Or at least put a notice in all of them first. At the very least, while checking the context, you'd discover the entire category is in the same shape and deal with them all equally, instead of singling out one sub-group. Otherwise it looks like POV, even if it isn't. Crum375 00:12, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
That's entirely true, but where else would I raise it? It seems the Judaism Wikiproject does not enforce much quality control. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 00:14, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I agree that most articles you nominated need serious cleaning and have virtually no sourcing. But if it's such a large group as a minimum I would check the larger context (i.e. if it's Jewish summer camps look at general summer camps etc.) to get a feel. And again for such a large group, esp. since we AGF, a warning notice would have made more sense IMO. But overall I hope this would be a good wakeup call for the respective contributors/authors to shape up or ship out. Crum375 00:45, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I would agree, but I did check the articles with other members on IRC, which of course I can't prove. I don't even remember who I asked anymore, but we had a discussion about campcruft. I'll see if I can find who it was, but it wasn't taken unilaterally. Thanks for the heads up, though! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 00:47, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
It is probably worth noting that the Judaism Wikiproject does not claim any relation to Jewish community topics. That wikiproject is focussed on Jewish religious topics, and hence may have bearing on the Hasidic articles, but not on the summer camps. jnothman talk 02:05, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your vote

No hard feelings — my only complaint was that I couldn't answer you in time to reconsider! ;) I was busy composing a reply yesterday, but gave up after it was closed. However, I will reply to your concern now:

Firstly, I'm also of the school of thought that adminship isn't a "big thing". I take a very pragmatic view of all of this, but as I said in my nom, this would be incredibly useful to have from time to time. I do RC checking, but it is a pain currently because popups aren't consistent; you might've noticed complaints on my nom from others about page truncation, and I've been unable to localise the problem. Having rollback will be a great help in that regard. Furthermore, at the moment its quite pointless for me to participate in AfD et. al., since I tend to stay away from the actual voting process (mostly having no opinion or knowledge to support a vote), but if I had admin tools, I would be an uninterested third party with the ability to close such discussions. I'm sure I will become more involved with various administrative functions once I have the ability, since I'm a sucker for the "meta" side of things.

I hope that answers you completely :) Best, dewet| 06:59, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

I only now read the small part of your message concerning "good editors shouldn't be admins"; while I agree in principle — certain people like the "organising" part better than the "writing" part, and vice versa — there is still an argument to be made for having a part of those tools for regular, long-time editors. As I mentioned in my Q1 (IIRC), its for the odd times that I do need it to try and sort out redirects/dab pages, or when I want to block an obvious vandal for a short time — by the time I've managed to report it to WP:AIV through our dodgy internet here, and somebody actually responds to it, the problem's gone and we need a big mop-up. I still want to focus on editing (hence my non-interest in the politics of deletion debates, etc.) dewet| 22:14, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Certainly, I live in Cape Town now, and just a few blocks from the train station. Tomorrow's a bit busy (and the weather's predicted to by sucky :( ), but I'll take a day out to go find some nice spots to photograph. Why do you want the station, specifically? I can think of a number of better candidates ;) dewet| 17:00, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Right, your wish is my command ;) If Sunday's weather holds up, I'll make an effort to find all those spots. There are some nice stations at the back of the mountain — Vishoek or Simon's Town. I'll keep you posted... dewet| 17:22, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm sorry too. I left a message on your talk page, IIRC, but then kinda forgot about it. But surely you must be planning on getting back here sometime? :) dewet| 20:49, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Naturally. I'm still waiting for the Department of Home Affairs to finish my citizenship registration. I've been waiting for over two years, then seriously thinking of moving back full-time. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 07:59, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
I know of a number of people in your situation, who're having the time of their life (quite literally) with our beloved DHA. dewet| 08:24, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
I take that back! I literally called the person I have been dealing with for the past two years and she asked if I could tell that she was smiling by her voice. She was calling to tell me that my application had been approved and that I was issued with a new ID number this morning. As of nine am this morning, I'm a full citizen of the post-1994 Republic of South Africa! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 08:26, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Not yet; the weather today is fine though, so I'll be taking off soon on a trip around the city. dewet| 07:11, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I drove around a bit today; its just a pain in the ass to upload to the commons, but I'll sort through it and let you know. dewet| 16:54, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Sure, or if you wanted, you can e-mail them to me and I'll do the grunt work, since I did ask! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 18:07, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm still uploading, though, but I'll let you know once I'm done. I think I've sorted out my technique now ;) dewet| 06:45, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Congratulations!

Well then, let me be the first to congratulate your on your shiny new S.A. citizenship! Those of us that were born with it are probably a bit blazé about it, but things like this remind you what a privilege it is to be living in such a great country. Veels geluk! dewet| 08:44, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Dankie, dankie! I should have been born with it, too. My father's South African, and I lived in CT for seven years or so. I just was a child and it was never registered, just assumed. So when I went to go for a passport, they said I had never formally become a South African citizen: Oops! I've been spending all this time trying to prove my father's identity and the time I spent in South Africa. But hey, this is so exciting :) Páll (Die pienk olifant) 08:47, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Well done, that must have been a mine field of bureaucracy that you had to crawl through. You are now offically one of us and I can't ignore you any more ;-) --Jcw69 09:59, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Border War

What? Your a citizen? Yay! ***fireworks and cheers*** Congrats!

Now, to business ... I can't recall all the sources I trawled through, but I'm pretty sure I got most of it (and the info for the border war military operations articles) from articles I found in The South African Military History Society Journal, which I have found to be a very good source for those writing about South African military history.

One other thing ... were trying to start an SA newsletter/bulletin board thingie at Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa/Bush Telegraph ... your participation and input will certainly be appreciated!

Kind Regards, Elf-friend 09:05, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you! I've been slogging away at getting all that paperwork done since January of last year. I saw the thing about the Bush Telegraph. On the whole it looks great, but what are you hoping for it to contain? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 12:05, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, news about items such as votes concerning SA articles (e.g. deletion), articles achieving good article status or featured status, votes about other things (such as the Africa award), news concerning SA editors (SA based or by inclination/main activity), such as adminship votes or adminship being granted, and probably important personal news (if the person concerned would like to make it public), such as births, deaths (hopefully not!), marriages, graduations, etc. What do you think? Elf-friend 12:54, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cape Town

I see you deleted a gallery of pictures - and I agree with that. However, is it maybe not appropriate to restore 1 or 2 of those photos as regular pictures within the article? I see your comment was "not free" etc. : yet the author claimed it was his own work (or at least some of it was). Is this the matter? We could do with some of his photos - what are your thoughts? I know there are plans to get this article to featured status - what can be done? -- Chris Lester talk 10:29, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

For featured status, all of the images must be explicitly free for use on WIkipedia. Until the original uploader chooses a licence to upload them under, they're pretty unusuable. I am never opposed to more images, but there is very little space left for more images in the article. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 12:02, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] user comes from

Your Userpage says you are from five countries but only states how you are from the United States and Denmark. So how are you from Canada, Hong Kong, and South Africa? Just wondering eh. - Rudykog 23:41, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding your nominations at WP:IFD

On pretty much every nomination, you wrote: "Per Canadian law, there must be clearly stated permission by a child's parents for their image to be used in a public forum. There is no such statement from any parent on this image, and thus can be considered illegal in the country it was originally uploaded from and taken in. Same law exists in the United States, where the image is housed." Which laws are we referring to here? If you could provide links, that would be appreciated.

By the way, please notify the uploaders that their images are on WP:IFD. Without following this procedure, neither I nor any other administrator can delete the image; they will have to be relisted instead, which means they will be on Wikipedia for an additional 7 days. Thanks. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. Think out loud 16:07, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] comment on your style

you proposed the deletion of the article on the Bread From Heaven Christian Fellowship. No harm done, it's your right. I scanned your contributed articles and they all looked fine and well done. However, your comments on "Bread" seem to be an apt description of your comments, more than anything else. No offense intended.

[edit] Johannesburg

Why did you change back to the old twinning section? Raker 06:37, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Because that is how the article has always been, and there is no need to have a section with only two items in a list. It's poor form. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 14:59, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cape Town Photos

Hey Páll,

I'd love to help with the photos (not to mention getting the article up to FA), but unfortunately I'm a bit "transport-limited" (i.e., dependent on the goodwill of others or the limited public transport system here) so getting around can be a problem. I can certainly take a nice picture of UCT and one of the M3. Weather (and my sometimes faulty memory) permitting, I'll take those on Monday or Tuesday. As to the other photos, have you considered asking some of the other people in Category:Wikipedians in Cape Town?

Cheers, htonl 13:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

I've taken a photo of the M3, which is at Image:Cape Town M3 passing UCT.jpg. I've also taken several pictures of the UCT campus, which are at commons:Category:University of Cape Town. Unfortunately the "canonical" picture of the Upper Campus which shows the full width of the campus (like they use on the adverts) needs a really wide-angle lens (or panorama stitching, I guess). - htonl 21:52, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Univerisities in Cape Town

Just a point of curiosity: I was always under the impression that a university and university of technology were two different things, in that a university has the aim of awarding degrees, whereas a university of technology awards diplomas. Due to this difference, are they still not classified seperately and use the broad term of "Tertiary Education" together? -- Chris Lester talk 18:42, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Photos of South Africa

Hi there, most of the photos are taken by myself... I'm crazy about South African scenery, some of them are from my mates, but most are me. Took a lot of pics of the Cape before I left to come work in the USA. Andresdewet 16:28, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

That's fine, but please, please state a copyright status, otherwise your great images will be deleted! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 17:59, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Design contest submission

On the project page for the design contest, it states that submissions may be coordinated through you. How, exactly do you prefer to handle the requests?

Requests, in what way? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 18:17, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Infobox Country

Hello. I truly believe that using dashes looks unprofessional and unbalanced. I'm open to changing the bullets to anything that makes the design looks more professional. If that's a little icon or some Unicode symbol, I'm open to that. But I think the dashes are just a very poor design choice. Are you willing to change the dashes? If so, what would you propose? Cheers. ☆ CieloEstrellado 05:26, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm willing to talk about it, too, but I'd like to know why you think the dashes look unprofessional? I'm a trained graphic designer, and I would never come to that conclusion. It would be interesting to know each other's take before we can make any other proposals. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 15:45, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't see your response until now. (It would be a good idea to post at my Talk page, so I know!) Anyway, I would really like to see a screenshot of how you see the box with bullets. I've posted mine at the template's talk page. Do you think the bullets in my screenshot look worse in comparison to the dashes in my other screenshot? ☆ CieloEstrellado 06:43, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to chat with you about Wikipedia of your language. Would you kindly drop me your email or IM (Skype, MSN, AIM or ICQ)? [edit] South Africa

Your comment about the South African expat community not been fully honest in their reasons for disliking SA makes alot of sense. Many of the expats in New Zealand are middle class Afrikaner families which seem to have a very negative attitude towards Blacks and the crime rate and they seem to be especially negative about Jo'burg. I do have a few questions for you that i hope you can answer for me.

 • Am i in danger of been mugged etc for been white?
No, South Africa pretty much is beyond race — it's about money. If anything, you're at risk for being mugged because either you;'re A) doing something stupid or B) wealthy. Wealthy black people are just as much at risk for being mugged as wealthy white people — it all depends upon your attitude and how street smart you are.
Well i guess i'm reasonably street smart, especially since i come from Rotorua.
 • Is Cape Town safe? (safe in comparison to NZ)
No, but then again, almost no place is safe compared to NZ. Cape Town is a wonderful and safe place as long as you're willing to be somewhat street smart. Don't piss off parking attendants.
 • Are schools multiracial or dominated by one ethnic group?
That depends upon the school, but in general, no.
 • What are English South Africans like? (in terms of culture, attitudes etc...)
A bit like Australians.
 • If am placed in a mainly Black school should i be worried?
No, why would you be?
It's pretty common in NZ to be pushed around if your white and going to a Maori school.
 • What do i call Black Africans without offending them?
Black people?

Cheers Arguss 10:42 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't know about NZ, even though I'm an NZ citizen (don't ask). But basically, don't be stupid, and stupid things won't happen to you. But I definitely recommend going to SA, you'll have a great time! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 02:47, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crash space during Wikimania

Hello,

You have put an information on Wikimania webpage, that you are offering crash space.

I'd like to attend Wikimania, and I am wondering if you can accomodate me. I have no big demands. Just a place on your floor is absolutely OK.

Polimerek 22:02, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Some info about me:

I am the treasurer of the Wikimedia Poland Society and its board member for the first year, elected on August 2005.

I am a chemist from Centre of Molecular Studies of Polish Academy of Sciences, involved in editing Polish Wikipedia, sometimes English and recently uploading chemical pictures to Commons.

My story with Wikimedia projects begun one month after launching polish edition of Wikipedia (at 2001), as a 7th registered user. Several weeks later I have also joined English Wikipedia, but I have registered there one year later, and have never been very active there.

In Polish Wikipedia I was mainly involved in editing chemical articles, translating basic meta articles from English Wikipedia, and also many articles for various other areas of knowledge. I don’t know exactly how many articles I have written from 2001 but my estimation it is in between of 1000 serious content additions and much more minor editions. Currently, I am responsible for maintaining Chemistry Wikiportal and category chemistry on Polish Wikipedia.

I am also admin of Polish Wikipedia almost from its beginning. I am administering articles for deletion, featured articles and Questions of newbies. I am also a member of informal "cleaning department" on Polish Wikipedia.

Sorry, I cannot send you an e-mail, because your Wikipedia e-mail is not confirmed :-) Go to your preferences and confirm it. I am not quite sure if I come to Wikipedia. Actually I am applying for "Wikimedia scholarship", therefore I am looking for methods to lower the cost of my stay in Boston. If I came I would fly from Warsaw to NY (JFK) and then I'll travel by bus to Boston. Direct flights from Poland to Boston are for some reasons much more expensive than to NY. [edit] Re: Help

Done. I'm not really surprised by his perception; a lot of the expats are those who are afraid of change, and afraid of adaptation. Anyway, we can only try and make that better.

PS: I see you're offering crash space for Wikimania; I'd love to go (I'm going to apply for a scholarship), and if I can save on the accommodation, that'd surely help... dewet| 06:35, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh, of course, for you I can surely manage something. You'd also be welcome to come and stay with me in New York for a few days — I'm going to be driving up to Boston and back — so you can get some time in New York as well, If you need help with the visa section, I have a very good relationship with the US embassy in Pretoria, I'm sure they can help you out, or I can ask my friend who's the editor of Beeld to talk to their political-support staff. But that would be great if you could come! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 07:10, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Added my bit as well. BTW, if anybody wonders why I'm a bit scarce lately - work pressures. Hope to be back at full strength one of these days ... Kind Regards, Elf-friend 07:05, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

[edit] Unfair deletion

Hi Paul,

The matter concerns this link, which is marked for deletion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Abbotts which concerns the Bromley & Chislehurst by-election: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromley_and_Chislehurst_by-election,_2006 .

Ben Abbotts came a very close 2nd. As it stands, the result may actually be disputed by the UKIP party, because the winner, Bob Neill, actually was technically invalidated and ineligible to stand as a member of Parliament at the time, because he held a job that was considered a conflict of interest. He knowingly incorrectly filled in this form.

The consequence of this is a repeat by-election would be forced because of the invalidated candidate, Bob Neill, or, depending on how things turn out legally, Ben Abbotts would automatically win as all votes for the invalid candidate would be thrown away.

The information written, is not what I have written, in fact, Timrollpickering is a political opponent. The information he has added is somewhat inaccurate. I would change it now, but it has been marked for deletion, therefore I don't know whether to consult you.

The grounds for deletion are not legitimate in my opinion. I made the site for Sue Doughty. She, like Ben, is a PPC - prospective parliamentary candidate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sue_Doughty .

So, I would make a proper full page for Ben Abbotts, clearly, maintaining an impartial line as required, very much like Sue's. If you could please find a way to prevent the deletion, I would be grateful, or if you could inform me of what I need to do.

Please reply, thank you very much for calling.

Yours sincerely,

Alan.

[edit] August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
 1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
 2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
 3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
 4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
 5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
 6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
 1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
 2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
 3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
 • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
 • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
 • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
 • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
 • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
 • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Apartheid Sporting Centre.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Apartheid Sporting Centre.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nilfanion (talk) 19:18, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:GregoirePicture.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:GregoirePicture.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok 23:05, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stubby articles

I ran across an article you created, Aeroton, Gauteng, apparently one of a series, and left comments on the talk page. Apparently someone created a stub for every town in the U.S. from Census Bureau data, so at least there is some info about the population. These seem to be a bit less than stubs. I will defer from plastering each with tags for lacking references. You must have obtained the basic info from a source, so please at least add a link to it. Believe it or not, pranksters have created numerous hoax articles about nonexistent towns in the U.S., so every article needs a verifiable and reliable source. Thanks. [edit] Suburbs of Johannesburg

[edit] R369 (Northern Cape)

I've added the "prod" template to the article R369 (Northern Cape), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:R369 (Northern Cape). You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. [edit] Untagged image

An image you uploaded, Image:Za coa.gif, was tagged with the coatofarms copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as seal. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 01:44, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A stupid question

Having read your Userpage, it is unclear if you've ever actually been to South Africa (or Namibia for that matter) - but it is clear that you've made significant contributions. So first off, thanks a lot for all your apparent great work, and if I may ask, how much time have you spent in South Africa -- purely out of interest? Rfwoolf 19:27, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh lord. It's this kind of churlishness that encouraged me to leave Wikipedia back in August. Yes, I've been to South Africa. I've lived there. I've met almost every South African Wikipedia editor. I have an ugly green passport that says Republic of South Africa / République de l'Afrique du Sud on it. Any other questions? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 04:38, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
There's no need for incongruity, PZFUN, 'twas simply a bid of thanks for your work on South African articles, and an attempt to familiarise myself with some of the stronger editors on South African articles. For this reason I hardly see how I can be accused of churlishness? Such a statement was unbecoming coming from a prominent editor such as yourself who should by now be more than familiar with the fact that we are slightly lacking in South African contributors. You may be surprised if I tell you that I am South African myself, and my query was not an attack on your authority to contribute to South African articles but rather an interest in your link to South Africa as my question mentions I was asking simply out of interest. As my question further stated, your userpage doesn't mention if you've ever actually been to South Africa, and you claim to be various nationalities aside from South African, I'm sure you'd agree that my question has some merit? Rfwoolf 11:46, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Your question fit into a patern of the other South African editors on here giving me a hard time because I do not live there at the moment. It was nothing personal directed against you. I actually have lived in Cape Town for a long time and hold a South African passport. Just like to keep things as simple as possible on the user page. Sorry for barking. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 17:11, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hakanana

Could you please check wether "Hakanana" is the correct spelling of this constituency? These sources: [25], [26], [27], [28] and many more have Hakahana so I think the article should be moved to Hakahana. All google hits seem to be clones of your Wp article. --Proofreader 19:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome back!! You're editing again!!

Dear Paul: You're back here on the wiki! I'm thrilled. :-) I only just noticed that you've started editing again merely by chance. I did send you a rather strange e-mail to your (old?) address yesterday asking about your disappearance, but I should have checked your contribs first. Silly me! *slaps forehead* In which case, ignore it. How are you doing? It's absolutely ages since we last spoke - far, far too long ago. I myself have been away from WP for a while, owing to a lack of Internet access, and I think it probably did me good. I trust all has been going well for you? --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) 04:42, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I just got your e-mail and was about to call you but remembered that it is probably a bad idea to call you at all hours of the night now! I was so thrilled to hear from you. I will call you tomorrow afternoon. And no, not editing again. I have to for an assignment for university, but once it over, I plan to go right back into retirement. How the hell are you? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 05:37, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Paul!!! It is really, really wonderful to hear from you again. I must say, I have missed you greatly.
I would certainly call you myself, but alas I don't have your telephone number any more, I think, unfortunately. Regarding times to call, though, don't worry, you can call me at any time at all - I do sleep these days, but I still don't sleep very much, and at highly variable times of the night. And besides, talking to you again would take precedence over sleep, certainly. :-)
I must confess, I'm not sorry to hear you've kicked your Wikipedia habit in this regard, as my extended hiatus has in fact granted me time to be involved in this intriguing thing called "real life" instead. Regarding how I am, probably the most succinct way of answering that would be a hell of a lot better than I was the last time you spoke to me. On reflection, I think in fact you played a crucial role in planting the seeds of change in my mental outlook back then when we talked on IRC - so, in part, it is you I should thank for this. But certainly, a great success to report. I hope that your university course is going well, as mine has been - and incidentally, how the hell are you doing, too?
(Sorry for the rambling nature of this reply. I think I'm just excited that I've got to talk to you again. Really this probably should have gone in an e-mail instead of here on Wikipedia; but what the hell, I'm clicking "Save page" anyway.) --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) 01:57, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Role of the international community in the Rwandan Genocide

Hi there PZFUN.

This will take you back: some translating you did back in 1995 from a French text to English. What was the text you translated for this article? There are no citations, and it is pretty POV in some areas. Do you remember where it is from?

Many thanks

[edit] Template:Iraq war protests

Hi. I notice that you are the creator of and primary contributor to Template:Iraq war protests. However, the template does not currently seem to be in use in any article. In fact, much (or perhaps even all) of the content is reproduced in the articles February 15, 2003 anti-war protest and List of locations which held February 15, 2003 anti-war protests. Could you please inform me of the template's purpose and, equally importantly, if it was at any time merged into either of the two articles mentioned (that is, of course, if you are aware of such a merge). I would appreciate your response. Cheers, Black Falcon 20:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:MapoftherouteoftheGreakTrek.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:MapoftherouteoftheGreakTrek.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self-no-disclaimers tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:24, 5 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Joonasl 13:24, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:Hong Kong relief map with geographic labels.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Hong Kong relief map with geographic labels.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 17:45, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Johannesburg-stub idea

Hey there,

I saw that you have contributed so greatly to South Africa-related articles, specifically creating Johannesburg-stub. I am currently going through the Cat:South Africa geography stubs and I feel that it would be most effective to merge Johannesburg-stub to Cat:Gauteng geography stubs. As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL.

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Old montreal.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. [edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:Michaelancher.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Michaelancher.jpg.

[edit] Can you change your signature please

Hello can you change your signature please. Currently it is <font color="000000">Páll</font></font> <font color="ff66cc">(Die pienk olifant)</font>. I would like it if you could change it because it contains incorrect syntax and in some cases can cause the whole page underneath it to be coloured a different colour than the normal black colour. If you can change it to <font color="000000">Páll</font> <font color="ff66cc">(Die pienk olifant)</font>, that would correct the error while still maintaining an identical signature, thanks. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. [edit] Tagalog Wikipedia

Tagalog Wikipedia Campaign March 2008!

Tagalog Wikipedia is campaigning for your participation in writing, editing, assessing and translating articles!
The purpose of this campaign is to expand and improve articles at Tagalog Wikipedia. Your participation will be highly appreciated by the community.

There are over 16,000 articles to view, read, review, edit, and expand, so please visit the Wikipedia Café and the WikiProject Philippines at Tagalog Wikipedia to help out!

The campaign includes seeking your assistance in:

Or just anything you can do to help us just like what you are doing there at the English Wikipedia.

Thank you in advance and regards, Tagalog Wikipedia Community

Finally, Wikipedia is the 7th most visited site in the Philippines. Then why is it that the Tagalog Wikipedia, the Wikipedia in your own language remains unknown to most of the Filipinos? The mission of this campaign is to change that. Will you join us?

[edit] Hong Kong FAR

Hong Kong has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here. --Joowwww (talk) 11:42, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Commons images on the main page

Hello! When placing a Wikimedia Commons image on the main page, please remember to first upload it to the English Wikipedia and tag it with the c-uploaded template. Otherwise, it will not be protected, so a vandal can replace it at the Commons and change what appears on our main page. Thank you! —David Levy 08:40, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] You're welcome

Hello :)

Yes, I am danish, so thank you for the grammar-correction..

And good work as well on the bombing article —Preceding unsigned comment added by AndrokleSasser (talkcontribs) 08:50, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ITN image

You appear to have added an unprotected Commons image to ITN. This can result in image vandalism on the Main Page. Please refrain from adding unprotected images to the Main Page in the future. Thanks, BanyanTree 11:44, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ITN contributions without prior discussion

I am assured that a request has been posted on the edit box for ITN to the effect of

Admins: if you are taking the initiative to post an item that has not been discussed at WP:ITN/Candidates, please add it there and explain why you believe that it meets the criteria.

It is disappointing therefore, and appears disrespectful to the regular contributors at ITN/C, that you seem to ignore this request. Kevin McE (talk) 21:54, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
