This WikiProject aims primarily to provide information on articles relating to the Auckland Region, especially the Auckland metropolitan area. Feel free to contribute to any articles relating to WikiProject Auckland and add your name to our list of participants.

[edit] Scope

This WikiProject aims to:

  • Improve articles related to the Auckland Region. The New Zealand Portal is intended as a front page for Wikipedia's Auckland coverage, and should aid the reader in navigating around the articles. It should also draw attention to current events and some of Wikipedia's best Auckland related articles.
  • Support Auckland related articles by ensuring that Wikipedia has plenty of high-quality articles to showcase and ensuring that readers starting with the project can find their way around easily
  • Ensure that articles are well organised (through the use of categories) and that due attention is paid to the further reaches of the project.
  • Be truly international - this project welcomes participants from anywhere in the world. The project should be used to highlight articles about Auckland that most readers may not be aware of.
  • Oversee the development of Auckland-related articles - for example, through the Collaboration of the fortnight
  • Provide a clear structure of how Auckland articles are arranged on Wikipedia and present the project so as to facilitate reading and research
  • Coordinate efforts and peer review articles

Getting the project off the ground

  • Compile all templates, infoboxes and categories relating to the coverage of politics and link to them via this page (use a subpage if the list will be too long)
  • Assemble a list of all featured content
  • Advertise like mad! Add links to Auckland articles and as many City and related pages as possible - please expand this in any way you see fit
  • That's all for now, but please add to this list if you have further ideas on how to get this project up and running!

Downtown Auckland Skyline
Downtown Auckland Skyline
The Auckland metropolitan area or Greater Auckland, in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest urban area of the country. It is also New Zealand's most populous city with approximately 1.3 million residents, over a quarter of the country's population, and demographic trends indicate that it will continue growing faster than the rest of the country. Auckland also has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world.

It is a conurbation, made up of Auckland City (excluding the Hauraki Gulf islands), North Shore City, and the urban parts of Waitakere and Manukau cities, along with Papakura District and some nearby urban parts of Rodney and Franklin Districts. In Māori its name is Tāmaki-makau-rau, or the transliterated version of Auckland, Ākarana.

Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the south-east, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges and smaller ranges to the west and north-west. The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the few cities in the world to have harbours on two separate major bodies of water.

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the fortnight, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced. You can also add any articles to be worked on in the To-Do Section of the project.
