Among South Pacific nations, New Zealand has the largest and most industrialised economy and is second only to Papua New Guinea in population. New Zealand is notable for its isolation, being separated from Australia on the northwest by the Tasman Sea, some 2,000 km wide. The closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of New Zealand is the Queen of New Zealand and is represented in the country by the non-partisan Governor-General. De facto political power is held by Prime Minister Helen Clark who, as Head of the Government, requires the confidence of the democratically elected New Zealand House of Representatives. The Realm of New Zealand includes the self-governing Cook Islands and Niue islands as well as the Tokelaus, and New Zealand's claim in Antarctica.
Great Barrier Island is a large island of New Zealand, situated 90 km to the north-east of central Auckland in the outer Hauraki Gulf. With an area of 285 km² it is the fourth-largest island of New Zealand's main chain of islands, though its highest point, Mount Hobson, rises only 621 m. The remote island, initially exploited for its kauri trees and seeing some very limited agriculture, is now inhabited by a small population of around 850 people, mostly living from farming and tourism.
The island receives its European name because it acts as a barrier between the Pacific Ocean and Gulf. For centuries, the indigenous Māori called it Motu Aotea, meaning (island [of the] white cloud) in the Māori language. Lyttelton is a port town located on the north shore of Lyttelton Harbour on Banks Peninsula, 12 km by road from Christchurch. The town is linked to Christchurch by railway and road tunnels through the Port Hills. At 1900 m long, the Lyttelton Road Tunnel (opened in 1964) is the country's longest road tunnel, and the railway tunnel is the country's oldest, dating from 1867. ... that the wood rose, a parasitic plant with no green leaves, is primarily pollinated by the native New Zealand Lesser Short-tailed bat? ... that Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the longest placename in the world? ... that the native Parapara tree catches birds in its sticky seeds? ... that Houhora Mountain was the first part of New Zealand that the early explorer Kupe saw, but he thought it was a whale, according to Māori legend?
