[edit] Mainland China
The test of whether or not a consensus is achieved is by how well the decision holds in practice and over time, and I expect this subject will keep coming up as it has in the past. I'm sure if I asked the Falun Dafa practitioners down the street from me that they would disagree with my opinion, but that would be a political discussion and a politically motivated response. Conversely, I could go the other direction and ask the storekeeper that sells Mao's Little Red Book and probably get a completely different answer.
Mainland China means precisely what the words indicate: "mainland" distinguishes it from islands, which is geographical, the same way Lower Mainland is used when the speaker wishes to exclude Vancouver Island; the term is first and foremost geographical. Esoteric legal points don't remove Macau and Hong Kong from the PRC. The PRC has sovereignty over those places. That's the way the international system works and has worked since it was created in 1648. Maybe it's not the best system, but Wikipedia's not the place to change it, nor to establish an independence that these places don't have in the real world. Yes, there are lots of things that make these places different from the rest of China, besides being islands, but that's taken care of by subcategories and wikilinks to where those details are laid out. bobanny 19:46, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- My apologies if I was a little snarky with the above comments - I was a little grumpy before. Note that my vote to delete wasn't conditional on the "Mainland" cats being deleted as well. With the Maoists and the Falun Dafa illustration, I don't believe that a consensus exists, and a vote on Wikipedia (though called "consensus") isn't about to create a consensus. From what I can tell from every indication, politics and the PRC is very polarized. Most Chinese immigrants I come across here are quite happy to leave homeland politics behind. I'm not arguing that "Mainland China" isn't a useful term or even that it is a disputed term, just that it should be used where appropriate, i.e., to indicate location, not distinctions in political economy. Hong Kong and Macau are exceptions to the rule in the PRC, and so should be treated as significant subcats of PRC. The 1648 thing was a reference to the Peace of Westphalia, where the principle that sovereignty trumps everything else in international relations originated. The PRC state/government is the sovereign, despite whatever accomodations it makes for political and administrative purposes. Grouping all three together without a hierarchy seems an attempt to deliberately ignore the huge significance of sovereignty, and makes the cats all the more confusing. bobanny 03:58, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Vandalism
Please stop calling my enforcement of your ArbCom sanctions as vandalism. It is rather incivil. SchmuckyTheCat 22:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Apologies
My fault. I misread that ban of yours to refer to all China-related edits, not just China-related categories. Sorry for wasted time. johnpseudo 22:19, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:West kowloon1a.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:West kowloon1a.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 00:27, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Extra smartone.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Extra smartone.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. JackLau 06:24, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Scottish English
Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland wants to use {{User en-sc}} for Scottish English, and I have suggested they follow ISO code to use {{User en-gb-sct}} instead and allow en-sc instead for Seychellois English, per the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 having "sc" Seychelles and ISO 3166-1:GB#BS-only codes having "gb-sct" as Scotland, just like ISO 3166-1:US having "us-ca" for California and {{User en-us-ca}} for California English. Could you please take a look at Wikipedia:User categories for discussion#Scottish English and give your thoughts? Thanks! Taric25 16:25, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
