U.S. Route 22 is an east-west route stretching from Cincinnati, Ohio in the west to Newark, New Jersey in the east. In Pennsylvania, the route runs for 319 miles between the West Virginia state line at Hanover Township and the New Jersey state line at Easton.
[edit] Route description
US 22 carries multiple names as it progresses eastward across the state, including the William Penn Highway and the Lehigh Valley Thruway. Several sections of the road are highway, including the Lehigh Valley Thruway. From Easton, after going through some sharp curves, US 22 becomes an expressway going past Allentown. It then merges with and runs concurrently with Interstate 78 for a 40 mile stretch before splitting off on to the William Penn Highway, which turns into Allentown Boulevard. Allentown Boulevard turns into Jonestown Road approximately 15 miles from Harrisburg. Jonestown Road turns into Walnut Street several miles further, and turns onto Herr Street, in Penbrook. US 22 then turns onto Arsenal Boulevard, entering Harrisburg. Approximately 2 miles further, at the intersection with Pennsylvania Route 230, US 22 turns north onto Cameron Street, passing the Farm Show Complex, the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, and Harrisburg Area Community College. It turns into a highway and has an interchange with Interstate 81 (exit 67 on I-81). At this exit, U.S. Route 322 runs concurrently to the north with US 22, northwest to Lewistown, where US 322 splits to the northwest to State College, and US 22 runs concurrently with U.S. Route 522, to the southwest. US 22 splits northwest of US 522 near Mount Union. US 22 keeps zig-zagging through the mountains until it reaches Hollidaysburg and Altoona, when it becomes an expressway called the William Penn Highway. The expressway ends near Ebensburg, continuing as the Admiral Peary Highway, and then the William Penn Highway.
At Monroeville, approximately 15 miles from Pittsburgh, US 22 runs concurrently with Interstate 376, later also picking up U.S. Route 30, on what is called the Parkway East. From downtown Pittsburgh, US 22 and US 30 run concurrently with Interstate 279 on the Parkway West (I-279 ending at I-79), to near the Pittsburgh International Airport. Continuing as an expressway, US 30 splits north near Imperial. US 22 runs as an expressway to the West Virginia border.
Reconstruction of US 22 is nearly complete between Armagh and Altoona. The entire highway in this section provides four lanes of travel. From New Florence thru most of Ebensburg, US 22 is an expressway with the remaining portion from Ebensburg to Altoona operating as a limited-access freeway.
[edit] Lehigh Valley Thruway
The Lehigh Valley Thruway is a 24 mile long freeway portion of US 22 from the eastern end of the Interstate 78/US 22 concurrency in Kuhnsville, west of Allentown, to the state line in Easton. The highway travels to the north of Allentown and Bethlehem and passes through Easton. Originally, I-78 would have continued with the U.S. 22 concurrency on the Lehigh Valley Thruway into New Jersey, with I-278[citation needed] running south as a bypass, and I-178 and I-378 serving Allentown and Bethlehem respectively. Due to opposition in Phillipsburg, New Jersey on the building of a I-78/U.S. 22 highway through the town (the same opposition that later killed the Somerset Freeway for I-95 in 1982), PennDOT and NJDOT decided to reroute the I-78 highway onto the proposed I-278 bypass and allow U.S. 22 to remain on the limited-access highway, which, after going through sharp curves and crossing the Delaware River into NJ, becomes an at-grade divided highway in Phillipsburg.
