Swiss passports are issued to citizens of Switzerland to facilitate international travel.

[edit] Physical Appearance

Swiss passports are Red in colour, with the words "Schweizer Pass" (German), "Passeport suisse" (French), "Passaporto svizzero" (Italian), "Passaport svizzer" (Romansh) and "Swiss passport (English) at the top right corner with the Swiss equilateral white cross below. Swiss Biometric passports have the standard biometric symbol at bottom right.

  • 2 Given Names
  • 3 Nationality

  • 7 Place of Origin (- note, this is different from Place of Birth)
  • 8 Date of Issue
  • 9 Issuing Authority
  • 10 Date of Expiry

[edit] Swiss Passports in Popular Media

In John le Carré's novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, British Secret Service officer Rikki Tarr keeps a "Swiss escape" in his suitcase, in case of trouble. Le Carré implies that this was common practice in the Circus, without specifying the attitude of the Swiss government toward foreigners' casual use of Swiss citizenship for espionage or romantic cover.

According to a study done by Henley & Partners, Switzerland has a Henley Visa Restrictions Index of 127, which means that Swiss citizens enjoy visa-free access to 127 countries and territories for short-term tourism visits. Switzerland is ranked 4th in the study in terms of international travel freedom.
