[edit] Types
- Regular Passport - Issued for ordinary travel, such as vacations and business trips
- Diplomatic Passport - Issued to New Zealand diplomats, top ranking government officials and diplomatic couriers.
- Official Passport - Issued to individuals representing the New Zealand government on official business
All newly issued passports will have a maximum validity of five years from the date of issue under the Passports Amendment Act 2005, regardless of when the previous passport (if any) was issued.
[edit] Obtaining a Passport
The Department of Internal Affairs is responsible for issuing, renewing and extending New Zealand passports. The Department of Internal Affairs issues Passports from offices in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand, and has overseas offices in Sydney and London. New Zealand Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates outside of Sydney and London are not able to issue Passports, although diplomatic officers may be able to provide application forms and assist in communicating with an issuing office. In emergencies some diplomatic posts may be able to issue an Emergency Travel Document, a Passport-like document with a validity of only one year intended to assist New Zealand citizens who do not have the time to obtain a Passport in time to travel.
[edit] Entitlement to a Passport
Only New Zealand citizens are entitled to be issued New Zealand passports. Other travel documents are available for refugees or residents of New Zealand who are unable to obtain passports from their home countries but need to travel; see Refugee Travel Document and Certificate of Identity for details.
[edit] Physical appearance
New Zealand passports are in deep navy blue, with New Zealand Coat of arms emblazoned in the center of the front cover. The word "NEW ZEALAND" is inscribed above the coat of arms, and "PASSPORT" below, with the standard biometric symbol at the bottom.
[edit] Identity information page
The New Zealand Passport includes the following data:
- Photo of passport holder
- Type (P)
- Country (NZL)
- Passport No.
- Surname
- Given names
- Nationality
- Date of birth
- Sex
- Place of birth
- Date of issue
- Authority
- Date of expiry
The information page ends with the Machine Readable Zone.
[edit] Passport Note
The passports contain a note from the issuing state that is addressed to the authorities of all other states, identifying the bearer as a citizen of that state and requesting that he or she be allowed to pass and be treated according to international norms. The note inside New Zealand passports states:
- The Governor-General in the Realm of New Zealand requests in the Name of Her Majesty The Queen all whom it may concern to allow the holder to pass without delay or hindrance and in case of need to give all lawful assistance and protection.
and in Māori:
- He tono tēnei nā te Kāwana-Tianara O te Whenua o Aotearoa i raro i te Ingoa o Kuini Erihāpeti ki te hunga e tika ana kia kaua e akutōtia, e whakakōpekatia te tangata mau i te uruwhenua nei i ana haere, ā, i te wā e hiahiatia ai me āwhina, me manaaki.
[edit] Languages
The textual portions of New Zealand Passports is printed in both English and Māori.
[edit] Refusal
Under Passports Act 1992, Minister of Internal Affairs has the power to refuse a passport, for example, on grounds of national security. The Minister also has the discretion to issue a passport for less than the full five year validity period.
[edit] Visa-free Travel
According to a study done by Henley & Partners, New Zealand has a Henley Visa Restrictions Index of 125, which means that New Zealand citizens enjoy visa-free access to 125 countries and territories for short-term tourism visits. New Zealand is ranked 6th in the study in terms of international travel freedom, on the same standing as Austria, Canada and Luxembourg.
It is estimated that 190 countries and territories granted visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to ordinary New Zealand passport holders. 150 (visa on arrival for free counted) countries and territories are visa-free accessible. Visa prior to arrival or pre-arrangement required for countries or territories not mentioned below.[1]
Where visa-free access is permitted, such access is not necessarily a right, and admission may technically be at the discretion of border enforcement officers. Visitors engaging in activities other than tourism, including unpaid work, may require a visa or work permit.
