[edit] Khmer Rouge
Dammit. I have to let off steam somewhere and this seems to be the place. As I wandered around the places where I may be able to add some information to this wonderful Wiki project – I found to my distress that many important and topical articles related to Cambodia like – Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot - are currently in a sad state indeed. The information included is scant, poorly cross- linked and contains many gaping holes.
I began plugging some of these by drafting an article about Khieu Thirith – Ieng Sary’s wife, Pol Pot’s sister-in-law, member of the DK central committee and Minister of Social Affairs and Education under the DK regime - who I noticed was a red link from various pages. Imagine my surprise to find that her even more infamous sister Khieu Ponnary – Pol Pot’s wife - also had no article and was barely mentioned in the encyclopaedia.
Pol Pot, Ieng Sary and the Kheiu sisters have been described as the Cambodian version of Mao’s “Gang of Four” the ideological heart of the revolution and the party – yet Ieng Sary has only six lines in Wiki (including three dates of birth) while both Ponnary and Thirith are missing entirely – indeed Khieu Samphan has only four lines.
Despite these glaring omissions and the meagre information currently available in the article, the talk pages for Khmer Rouge reveal SIX DAMN ARCHIVES full of arguments, counter-arguments and ideological debate. Most of this is about vaguely related topics – are Chomsky, Chandler, Kiernan, Vickery, Heder, Kissinger, Samdech Sihanouk, American Foreign Policy, The Red Menace, Green Men from Mars, Bill Gates or the Stay-Puff Donut Man REALLY to blame for the Genocide/Collateral Damage/unavoidable egg breaking that happened between 1975 and 1979 etc.
At present, any poor sucker who wants to actually USE Wiki to FIND some information on the Khmer Rouge is S out of L.
This stinks and undermines the purpose of an online encyclopaedia.
I would like to propose a small and worthwhile community sub project – A clean, detailed and working series of articles about the Khmer Rouge – taking in the history of the movement, bios of each of the major leaders, some info on the killing fields, evacuation of the cities, collectivisation, Toul Sleng, Choeng Ek, some links or summaries of survivors stories and an updated article on the preparations for the KR tribunal.
Finally (and not before) there should be a summary of the different academic points of view on the intent, culpability and destruction wrought (or not) of the KR/DK regime. This necessarily controversial article should present both sides of the debate – perhaps to even things up, each side could be written by it’s most vitriolic detractor
I would be interested in collaborating on such a project with some of you (or any interested others). I have read most of the published works by the authors above, I live and work in Cambodia and have a wonderful Khmer wife and family who lived through the 70’s in rural Cambodia. I speak Khmer and although I am Australian (Gidday mate owyergoin’?) I can even claim Cambodian citizenship by marriage. In my chequered past I have studied SE Asian history, worked as a journalist and photojournalist (Wiki needs more photos!). Currently, I work as a consultant and social researcher here in Cambodia.
Some of the required articles exist but need expansion or some work to weed out factual inaccuracies. All need to be linked in some coherent manner. There is an excellent online source for primary sources (translated into English) and secondary sources - [1] – and there are plenty of other Googleable resources around. If there is some interest in this idea, we could divide up the articles and tasks required between us and edit and proof each others work. This would be a very interesting task.
I would even go so far as to say this is an important task. To give voices to those who suffered and died here in the ‘70’s, to raise international awareness of the KR in the lead up to the Tribunal and like the Vietnam wall or the museum at Auschwitz to provide some global memorial that can inform the generations born after the downfall of the KR – may it never happen again.

[edit] Slovakia Edit War
Hi. To explain my edit-warring and 3RR rule violation, I was reverting his vandalism to Slovakia and Principality of Nitra articles, but he keeps undoing them without comment. He even stated that he's going to act like a sockpuppet(diff, diff - Slovakia and diff - Principality of Nitra). MarkBA t/c/@ 16:35, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi, User:MarkBA is doing just what he has to do in order to enforce a community ban. User:Pannonia is a sockpuppet of a banned user. Pannonia vandalized Slovakia and keeps reverting to his version. He has now seven reverts on that page only for today! I have already asked to block him indef as a sockpuppet of a banned user trying to evade his block.[2] Tankred 16:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] A Call for Peace in Central Europe
Pannonia I read the link - I definitely don't think you are a sockpuppet and I liked what you said about making articles more neutral - it sounds like Slovakia may need some of that treatment. However, you didn't discuss any of your changes before making them - this is pretty naughty by wikipedia standards.
MarkBA I read that link as well. I saw all the reverts and also saw that neither of you went anywhere near the article talk page.
Folks, can we do a couple of things:
- Agree to disagree strongly on points of Slovakian/Hungarian history
- Each write a concise summary of suggested changes to the POV sections of the relevant article/s - on the talk page
- Reply/Critique each other's suggestions
- Prepare a revised version of the relevant article sections (perhaps prepare one each) aiming to include all points of view and with appropriate references. Remember history is rarely definitive, different interpretations will always exist and we should try to cover them all in Wikipedia.
- Play nice in future.
Hell, both of you obviously have the sort of specialized knowledge that Wikipedia needs to create a great encyclopedia - let's not waste it in stupid edit wars. Paxse 17:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Reverting
Rather than undoing multiple edits as you did here, you can revert in one step as described here. Λυδαcιτγ 23:33, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
What you can do is check all of the edits made by the vandal in one step, and mass revert them. In this case, you would go to the edit history for the Hall article, check the circle in the first column next to the pre-vandalism version (09:55, 1 May 2007 Gurch (Talk | contribs) m (7,303 bytes) (Revert 1 edit by 66.159.152.54 to last version by Gaius Cornelius)), and check the circle in the second column next to the last vandalism edit (15:09, 1 May 2007 208.0.195.254 (Talk) (3,236 bytes)). Then click "Compare selected versions." You'll see that all changes made are vandalism, so click "edit" next to the original Revision as of 09:55, 1 May 2007, hit save, and you're done. Λυδαcιτγ 23:09, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome. Looking at your contributions, I see that you mass-welcome users, which I find admirable, but misguided. There's been at lot of talk about this at WT:WC, which you might want to take a look at. My opinion, in short, is that welcoming users who have not yet contributed is little better that welcoming by bot, and that welcomes should be personal. This isn't a guideline or policy, just something to think about. Λυδαcιτγ 00:31, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't disagree that personal welcomes are nice, but I don't see why they should be given to every new user. Would you rather have been welcomed en masse, or after someone noticed your work on an article? And if you decide to limit your welcoming to contributors, you can still welcome a large number of users by checking for good edits by new users during RC patrol, and giving these users a welcome.
- Incidentally, I checked out the "new accounts only" feature of Special:Contributions, clicked the talk page of the first user I saw making a good edit, and found this: User talk:A. Carty. Insulting, no? Λυδαcιτγ 22:48, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

It's always good to get postive feedback. I'm kind of learning on the job with the military history articles -- writing WP articles is a great way of absorbing facts, I find. [edit] Category:Wikiproject Cambodia
I set up Category:WikiProject Cambodia articles and Category:WikiProject Cambodia. It's actually really easy. When you put articles into a new category, it first shows up as a red link. When you click on the link, you just need to make an edit of some kind to the category page. It's enough to put it into a parent category (in this case, Category:WikiProject Southeast Asia). That's all you need. Hope it helped. Good luck on the new project! Fishal 02:58, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your interest in VandalProof, Paxse. As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. [edit] Proposal for global perspectives task force
Hi Paxse. I noticed your name on the members list of the countering systemic bias project. Based on your interest in diversifying sources used for the Cambodia articles and your impressive work on the site in general, I wanted to bring your attention to a recent proposal to start a task force to improve the global perspective on key articles. I am not exactly sure how it will work, but I definitely think the expansion of sources will be a part of it. This seemed to be up your alley, so I figured at the least you might want to drop in on the discussion and add your two cents. Cheers! --Mackabean 02:09, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Our friend in Cambodia
If you do know him/her, go poke him for me. This person has some very interesting views on American and Canadian politics, especially since he/she apparently resides in Cambodia and has a friend, colleague or second residence in Thailand. They're also very abusive in spreading these views, which has made watching for them fun. I have noticed the possibly good edits (although some of the IP addresses our friend uses are dynamic or shared, so it might be some other person). I am not an expert on Cambodia, so I really don't know anything about airports there, but I would suggest making any potentially good changes to the airports statement yourself, as I imagine you will not be so hyperbolic as the IP editor. I took a look at the contribs and the talk page of the user who added the prod tag (Special:Contributions/One_Night_In_Hackney) and it doesn't appear to me to be a sock of the people who were originally involved in the AfD. I'm not sure it's related, so the article will stay deleted for now. You could always bring it up at WP:ANI or WP:DRV if you still have hang-ups about it. Sorry I'm not able to help more, but I don't usually deal with sockpuppets. Good luck! ~ Amalas rawr =^_^= 15:20, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Maurice Chavez
Just to let you know, I've removed the prod template you placed on this page. The edit before yours in the article history was an editor removing a previous prod template. If the prod template is removed it shouldn't be replaced. It's worth checking the history before you place a prod tag and always mention in your edit summary that you have prodded the article and why. If you think this article should still be deleted you should list it at WP:AFD. Cheers, Paxse 19:39, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I just saw your comments on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Puerto Plata (musician). [edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Irish Famine (book) (2nd nomination)
Hello Paxse, your attempts to disrupt my nomination for the AfD will not go unmentioned. I have in one instance raised this matter with an administrator. Your attempts to justify putting misleading information before the first nomination are facile. You have had plenty of time and opportunity to address this before my re-nomination, and you failed to do so. It takes years for a book to appear on the curriculum of any college, and only then, when it has assumed some considerable notability. The fact that you simply Googled the title for references, dose not lend weight to any of your contributions. It shows a complete lack of interest in, or understanding of, or respect for the editors who have an interest in the subject involved. Your recent contribution to this AfD, where you dissected and cut up my edit, rendering it incoherent and disjointed is completely objectionable. I want you to return my contribution to its original condition, and place your comments below it, and refrain from any further attempts at justification on the AfD page. A simple comment directing editors to this discussion here will suffice. --Domer48 16:30, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Dear Domer48, your reply to my AfD argument was 900 words and used a variety of spacing and different levels of indent [3]. In it you fired off a variety of criticisms of my actions, the sources I added to the article and threatened to report me to an admin. I replied to each point as briefly as I could, because I felt obliged to explain and defend myself from your criticisms and accusations. You were (and are) obviously furious. Can I suggest that we both step back from this AfD - just let it run without further comment. I'll do the same and we can both do something more productive and take some time to chill out. Let's talk about this in a day or two when things have calmed down. I'm very happy for you to move both your comments and my replies (though not my vote) to the AfD talk page. Or I'm happy to do it if you prefer. I agree that our lengthy comments and arguments make it more difficult for other editors to easily summarise the debate. I will cross post this to your talk page as well. Cheers, Paxse 17:42, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Could you review my recent edit

- Gidday Domer48, I had sleep then work as well. The edits look excellent, great job! I think you've successfully sanitised the debate without losing the substantive arguments. Editors looking for the R rated version can read the talk page. Dammit I may just end up liking you. Can I make one small request? Could you place a tag on the article authors page informing her/him about the AfD? I'd do it, but it looks better (for you!) if you do it yourself. This really is the courteous thing to do - even if it costs you a 'keep' vote. The proper tag is:
- {{subst:AFDWarning|The Irish Famine (book)}} Cheers, Paxse 13:55, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
-
- I have just placed the tag, I do not think it worked out. Want to check it? --Domer48 14:43, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- No problem at all. Sorted. I used <nowiki></nowiki> around the AfD notification tag, these 'nowiki' tags allow you to display another tag without actually triggering it and making it display the full message. This was so you could cut and paste straight from my talk page. I was being too clever by half by showing you the tag instead of simply pointing you to the Wiki page. When you copied the tag from the edit window and pasted to the user page the <nowiki></nowiki> tags came along for the ride and thus prevented the message from displaying. I edited the user page and deleted the 'nowiki's and presto - it displayed. Cheers, Paxse 12:48, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Scouting in Cambodia
Thank you so much, you do great work! What does this one Image:Cambodiaarc.jpg say, then? Thanks, Chris 22:39, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Kayarith(y) Kampuchea or Cambodian Scouts as a rough translation. Listen Chris, I've stuffed up somewhere here with these two scripts, sorry. Scratch the Cambodian Guides article script and I'll prepare a new one, then replace the Scouts article script with the former Guides one - confused? Me too :)
This shoulder patch has the longer formal version while the circular badge is a more generic term - Khamarak Kayarith - no mention of Cambodia and it has a spelling error to boot. Both the words khamarak and kayarith are being used somewhat differently to normal usage. Give me a chance to check the large dictionary at work next week to be sure of the meanings. I think Guides is Khamarak Kayarith Neary but I'll need to check at work to be sure. Then I'll have to go and sort all this out on Commons as well - groan! Cheers, Paxse 11:35, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks once again for all your help! Can you help render "Be Prepared", the Scout Motto, into Khmer script? Thanks! Chris 06:18, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Hi, nice to meet you. I do a fair bit on China articles as well and a lot of Vietnam; not as much on the other SE Asian countries. On my new Windows Vista computer I can see the Khmer (though the font size is really small) but on the Windows XP machine at the office I just see square boxes. Badagnani 02:33, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
I just added a new template to match the ones we use for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese articles. It can go right on an article, at the top, rather than on the talk page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Needkhmer Badagnani 02:38, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- Great job and lightening fast. I'll post it over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cambodia as well. While you're watching, can I ask for your opinion? Which do you prefer Khmer script in small jpegs which everyone can see or unicode (which everyone should have but currently don't)? I'm trying to decide on a standard for this for all the missing articles on Cambodian districts. Paxse 02:46, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, the Burmese (and Tibetan) language people use little .jpgs or .png files or whatever, so maybe that's the way to go so it's easiest for people to read? But the problem is, one of the best things and reasons behind having the native script in the English-language articles is that it allows one to copy and paste into a Google search to find pages in the native language, as often the sources on a particular subject are better in that language. I do it for China all the time, and then translate into English with Babelfish. With little .jpgs that wouldn't be possible. Badagnani 04:07, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
So far we have "needkhmer," "needhanzi," "needkanji," "needhanja." I think there might be some other ones. We could probably use a "need Thai" too. Badagnani 04:24, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Would you mind having a word with this hot-headed deleter? I believe there's no objection to the new template among the editors interested in Khmer topics, thus we should object to this deletion. Badagnani 05:22, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sosthene Fernandez
User:Poniev is not willing to negotiate, and he is continuing his Wikipedia:Disruptive editing, tarnishing the article in accordance to W:MOS. What shall we do? He did not even replied to us at all, or uttered a sentence.
I believe that reaching this point can be considered Vandalism and perhaps we should take disciplinary actions through Wikipedia:Request for comments, or should we take steps to ban him? I hope to hear from you. Mr Tan 13:56, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- I have sent a request to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, so as to put a temporary stop to this edit reverts and bring admin attention to this matter. You are welcome to help out. Thanks. Mr Tan 14:07, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- Gidday Mr. Tan and thanks for your message - I've seen your edits around the KR pages. I think we need to give User:PONIEV some time to reply. Many of us are in different time zones here and may not be able to log in as frequently as we'd like. As I said on the talk page there are different references that show Fernandez was Vietnamese Philippine[5] or Khmer Philippine[6]. So one of those well regarded sources is probably incorrect - who knows which one? As a small cultural point - many nationalistic Khmer would consider being called 'Vietnamese' a deadly insult (and vice versa for many Vietnamese). I note that User:Poniev has made about 50 edits to this article and she/he created it. Imagine for a moment that Poniev is a grandchild of Fernandez - and you're insisting on identifying his revered Grandad, who resisted the NVA and the KR, as one of the hated Vietnamese.
So, relax, keep up the good work you do on articles and I'll add both sources to the article with a sentence explaining the conflicting sources soon. Cheers, Paxse 17:25, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion
Did you see what was present? The "article" consisted of three links and no explanatory text. It was exactly what was contemplated by the A1 rationale for speedy deletion. Warning users for removing speedy deletion templates on articles they created and reinstating those templates is most assuredly not edit warring, if you take that term to have its conventional harmful meaning and not the very most expansive one. My actions weren't a commentary on the topic or its worthiness -- that isn't at all what an A1 speedy deletion is about. If this hasn't clarified my actions, please feel free to respond. Erechtheus 18:55, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. You raise some good points. Honestly, the only things I'd like to talk a bit more about are as follows: 1) I don't consider using the standard templates from WP:WARN in their proper order biting the newcomers at all. In fact, I'd submit that my use is precisely appropriate. One important rule of this project is that article creators should not remove speedy deletion templates. The warnings start out very politely and encourage an increase in knowledge about the procedural aspects of the project. 2) I'd agree that what I did with the Indian pilot was wrong, but it made sense to me at the time. The article was started with the hangon template, and it just made sense to me that it was only appropriate to take it before an admin with a speedy template. Now that I see how that worked out (and note I removed the template myself), I certainly agree it would have been more judicious to proceed a bit more slowly. I think you can see my focus is a procedural one, and that certainly does rub some people (especially the "foo doesn't need sources" crowd) the wrong way. I do thank you for seeing that I'm trying my best to contribute, and I'll take your words of supportive criticism under consideration in my future editing. Erechtheus 21:51, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, there was one more thing I wanted to address. One concern of mine with a new article on a topic that I feel likely exists is the POV fork. I see now that's not really a reason for speedy deletion, though -- the better practice would have been to do exactly what was done in redirecting the new topic to the established article that covers the subject matter, making sure any appropriate new content was reflected in the established article. Erechtheus 21:56, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Cambodia-related entries
Hello, thx for your message. As I'm new to Wikipedia, I think I have screwed up the template you created for the 2003 Elections. It was too late when I realized it and didn't know how to undo it. Sorry. J Lam 22:49, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- No problem - fixed already. You've been doing some great work in your first couple of days here - excellent stuff. Changing an edit its easy. Next time you want to undo something you've done (or a vandal edit) click on the history tab at the top of the article (or template page). This shows you a list of edits by each editor. Find the edit you want to undo - in this case the one by Jplam - then click on the highlighted word 'last' to the right of that edit. This will bring up the article again with your edit and changes shown at top right of the screen and the previous edit shown at top left (so that you can compare). Above your name you'll see something like "Revision as of 04:45, July 4, 2007 (edit) (undo). Then click on the highlighted word (undo) and this will bring up the normal editing screen that you already know. [edit] Kind words appreciated
Thanks for your kind words about my edit on Suryavarman II. I had just bought the Briggs book (quite a lot in it) and was inspired to go in and elaborate. I saw your note to another editor about the Khmer Empire article and am thinking I might give it a try. I gather you live in Cambodia? I first visited in 1969 and have been going back, most recently last fall. Writer128 02:01, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- You are very welcome - the praise was well deserved. I'm deeply jealous that you have Briggs, I haven't found a copy here yet. I recently picked up a secondhand copy of Mabbett and Chandler's The Khmers. I was planning to use it to do some of the work you have been doing - though probably not half as well :) Yes, Cambodia is home now. I came in 1996 (your date reversed) and fell in love, first with the country and then later with a wonderful Khmer girl from the countryside. I still love this crazy fascinating place and enjoy writing about it here. The Khmer empire article is in a pretty poor state. Mostly referencing and formatting problems but it could do with a rewrite in a consistent style as well. It would be great if you would look at it - I'd be happy to help out in any way. Cheers, Paxse 14:09, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Khmer spellings
Seems like something went wrong with the Khmer spelling you tried to add to the district articles, e.g. Bakan (district). It shows only as ???? here, while in Pursat Province I can see some Khmer script above the infobox. andy 11:57, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hey Andy, thanks for noticing (Wow someone actually read the Bakan article!). I put those in as a placeholder until we can decide on small jpegs or unicode for Khmer names - at the moment there seems to be no policy or consensus. I also did it to remind myself to add them later - feel free to edit them out and that will help me get my backside over to Commons to upload the jpegs I've prepared. I see you've done some excellent work on Thai districts too - I'm inspired to get the Cambodian districts up as well. Cheers, Paxse 12:11, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- IMHO the Unicode characters should be there, like it is for many other obscure scripts. Someone who can actually read the script will have the necessary font on the computer, and for others it doesn't matter if they see small boxes (like I see for Laotian, even though I have a Lao-capable font) or the actual script. Using PNGs (JPG isn't good for line-art things) I would only use for scripts not yet covered by Unicode at all. But I have no idea if this is just my personal preference, the common usage on Wikipedia, or even a policy - Thai letters are much more common than Khmer... If you want more readers, a good thing would be to add coordinates to the articles, because then in a few weeks they will show up in Google Earth [7]. If you need any technical help on the district articles, feel free to ask me or "borrow" from the Thai district articles. andy 15:49, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] KRT
Thanks for recreating the KRT entry. I got all these annoying speedy deletion messages while I was entering the info. I didn't know what was going on so I just gave up. Thanks again. Just created a "commune council" entry. Feel free to edit it when u have time. Thx again.
[edit] Wikiproject Cambodia
I notice you wanted an award for the Wikiproject, i would like to mention that i am interested in designing you an award/ barnstar
Chaza93 17:20, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- Wonderful! I need something project specific to give to those kind Wikipedians who help out the project. A couple of levels would be nice and something fairly iconic about Cambodia. Thanks! Paxse 17:22, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
OK what would you think about a medal, with different ribbons, and the actual medal bit in the shape of Cambodia Chaza1000 19:48, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- How may different levels do you need? Chaza1000 19:08, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm good question... Maybe three levels - One for Great New Contributors to the project, One for General great contributions to the project and one super-duper-mega-special one for saving the president or something. Perhaps create just the general one to start with and then let's have a look at it and discuss - is that cool? Paxse 19:16, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok i came up with this, the gold ribbon says that it is a level 1

[edit] Pax
Followed you here after leaving another comment on yer Pony Express page. You live in Cambodia? Was over there for a short visit in 1970 (did not stay long) and revisited in 2000 to view the temples at Angkor before they became tourist traps and to hang out at Apocalypse Now in Phnom Penh (the bar with the finest decor, bar none, that these old eyes have seen). A beautiful country populated by friendly, curious, and young people. Their history is indeed one of the most tragic in the region. RM Gillespie 15:08, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hi Paxse
Thanks for your note to me today. I can't say I've done much on Cambodia yet. My main interest is cooperative microfinance and I'm labouring along right now on an article on credit union history. I spend about 4 months of each year in Cambodia supporting the emergence of community-based banks, and obviously have a lot of photos and a certain amount of local familiarity to show for it (slow progress on Khmer though, sigh ...!)
Sorry about the mix-up on naming conventions. The link for Banan went to Ba'nan, a district in China. So I corrected it. But I'll re-dub it match your naming convention.
I'll be in Cambodia in August. Will you be there?Brett epic 16:19, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hello Paxse again
Paxse--I'm honored you asked but I'm afraid I just don't have the time. Lately I've had some extra to put in here, but that's about to go away. I can keep working on the occasional article but can't take on something more regular. Don't know how you do it--if I've figured out how to read these things right, you're evaluating, tagging and adding to, generally improving dozens a day. Hats off from a male American journalist in Washington. Writer128 02:44, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Greetings from Thailand
Hi Paxse. Luckily, I don't have to do visa runs. In fact, I understand quite a few expats who formerly did visa runs from Thailand have moved to Cambodia permanently because of the Thai government's crackdown on that activity. Anyway, I do hope to be in Phnom Penh in the coming months for a visit, and hope to check out some of the markets. — WiseKwai 05:32, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Aha, a legitimate expat I see :) I saw the panic on the message boards when the visa regulations changed too - can't say I've noticed any change around town. I've heard from friends in Sihanoukville that some Pattaya-pats have become Snooky-pats instead.
Oh your're welcome thanks I'm glad you've noticed. I'm very interested in Khmer history indeed as Tibet and the far and south east in general. I'm glad to be a part of WikiProject Cambodia although unfortuntately I don't understand Khmer language!!. Yes I know Wise Kwai well anyway from our extensive cooperation for WP Films - another great contributor. As with Tibet I'd very much like to cover more Cambodian biographies and architecture. If you know of some missing articles feel more than free to prompt me with them - all the best! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 16:48, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

OK I did promise myself to cut back on the work and spend more time reading and browsing this ginormous encyclopedia but I'll definately start what I can. -Regardless of what is missing - I always seem to come across encylopedic articles that are missing!!!! from Mining in Wales to Ernest Chinnery - an anthropologists in Papua New Guinea there are so many missing articles that propels me into action!!! -potentially there are an amazing amount of articles to cover. Incidentally I was just looking about stubbing a few districts of Cambodia which I'll do now I think and maybe stub a film or two later ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 18:05, 13 July 2007 (UTC) Ah I'm clever - I understood this convention already and have actually already done the redirects!!! Ha!! You're doing a great job with tagging -theres about four or five new bio articles I've just created - I wish I could upload the images of the people but they would get deleted soon wnough because if the living people imagery rationale thing that a free alternative could be created. I'm done for the moment anyway I'll add some more Cambodian stuff tomorrow. Eventually I'll get around to blue linking all the articles on the list of Cambodians page . [edit] Did you know
Sorry man. I've nominated every recent Cambodian film article I've created that is rated higher than a stub, so there's a few more in the pipeline. If it attracts one quality editor who makes a significant contribution to the Cambodia project, it's worth the effort, I think. With the Rithy Panh films about filled in, and the crowning touch that is The Snake King's Child - probably the most significant film in the history of cinema - I'm just about done for now. — WiseKwai 19:15, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I've made a go at Tum Teav -still needs copy editing -you can't write a quality articles in several minutes!!! It will take some time but its a start right? I hope it is correct as I did get some mixed versions from my research ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 20:05, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I started some articles on Khmer dance but is this category incorrect Category:Cambodian dances should it be Category:Dances of Cambodia?? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 20:35, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm... Good question. Honestly the Cambo cats are so bloody convoluted there currently IS no system. It's a free for all. I've been cleaning and sorting the 3 stub cats and managed to get the bio stub category properly listed for the project. Did you know that there is a minimum threshhold of 60 articles needed to create a stub category? True story, see the procedure for yourself. It seems as though everybody pretty much ignores these rules tho' so don't panic :) For interest, this is an incomplete list of Cambodia cats as of yesterday User:Paxse/Sandbox5. Scary huh? It is correct? Where are you living by the way. Are you Cambodian? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 13:47, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
I would like to see even coverage on wikipedia. Cambodian literature should be crammed full of articles -hundreds of them. The category didn't even exist until yesterday!!! I am planning many articles on pieces of Cambodian art also ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 13:48, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Suramarit Theatre
Do you think Suramarit Theatre warrants an article? — WiseKwai 05:53, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Ah, - absolutely yes Mr Wise. Preah Suramarit National Theatre and its designer Vann Molyvann both warrant articles!!!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:08, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Right I've begun developing the article on Phnom Penh -i'm sure you'll agree it has come on evne since earlier. It will need referencing later but I want to add content first. Really the article should be twice as long as it is even now. Once this has developed then I can begin adding landmarks and articles. But this is a core article and needs attention. Agreed? ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:20, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I also started Sport in Cambodia article -but this needs a complete rewrite as it contains some copied info from the existing articles. But when rewirtten should provide a decent overview of Cambodian sport ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:21, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Once the capital is sorrted out I think it is of prime important to make each province have an equally long article - coverage is pathetic at present ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 17:01, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- All agreed! But leave Pursat for me you madman - that's our hometown. I'm working on taking some pictures for some of these Phnom Penh articles and plan to visit the ruins of the Suramarit theater before the developers knock it down (hopefully I'll be able to go with Molyvann and snap him too). Last I heard the theatre had been sold and it's time is limited. I took some photographs of the Royal University of Phnom Penh another Vann Molyvann effort this afternoon. I went up on the roof for a great angle. I'll hop in and help out with the Phnom Penh article soon but my watchlist is going crazy right now and it's time for sleep.
Right I've begun sorting out the districts with this pretty template - as content is added I hope to add the Wats and notablr landmarks of each province ti the templates What do you think?

[edit] Thanks for the heads up
I'm not sure exactly how much I have to offer WikiProject Cambodia, as I'm sure my knowledge on the country doesn't even begin to touch yours. I've just travelled there several times in my life and it's hands down my favourite place to visit. I know more about Cambodia than the average person, but that's not saying much. I'll help where I can, I look forward to working with you to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Cambodia related topics. Cheers.CloutierFan02 23:53, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Well yes first of all we need articles started on the districts =they cover a big area (othe countries would have articles even on the communes and even the villages too. Then as I already told you this that I want to see all the provincial and district articles turned into full length articles as with many of the other stubs. This = improving existing content. However such is the poor coverage I'd like to get some content up and running also whilst gradually improve exisiting content. I don't know if you have noticed the Phnom Penh changes ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 21:21, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
But please bear with me. I can't get every Cambodian article full length overnight!!! We are almost having to start from scratch!! Many of the provincial articles are shocking!!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 21:24, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Ah Meester Paxse. Thankyou!!!! I hope the new district stubs can become like the ones in your home province -I noticed you added some stuff for the districts of it. I'll try to set up all the districts and templates now and hopfully we can start stub removing!. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 11:53, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Right I've also begun expanding some of the stubs. I will be going through each district and add the new info box (with Cambodian flag colors and the new commune and village parameters) and all the communes and villages of each district e.g see Mongkol Borei District. Then they can be filled with district info like I am working on on Battambang Province -still needs copy editing to avoid sniffers and othe rinfo on sports, politics etc- these articles should resembles the length of the msin Cambodia article. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 14:42, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Ha!!! This was my evil plan. You may be pleased to know that every district in Cambodia has now been set up save one or two -over a 100 articles need tagging -I'll get to this when I go through and ad the details -if you don't beat me to it. We now have them onto wikipedia organized by provincial templates!! Next stage is to go through every district add an infobox and and communes/ villages table. I will note to mark them as phum and khum not khoom and phoom as some idiot has been doing!!! So within -I'd say -10 days every district in Cambodia should be more than a two line stub. Next stage then will be landmarks adding all the sights of each province / district and adding them to the provincial templates. I also intend to stub the main roads in Cambodia - National Highway 1 etc -I've already linked these in the disamb pages ready. Once the country is "mapped out" then we start to add the people and every article imaginable. Cool? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 10:40, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Krŏng Kaôh Kŏng
The redirect was made because the page was a short page, showing up on the Short Pages report, and had no information in it that was not already presented in the destination. Every single bit of information on the Krŏng Kaôh Kŏng article is availible at the destination. The redirect in no way says that they are they same thing, just that information about Krŏng Kaôh Kŏng can be found just as well at the destination without a sub-stub of a page. - TexasAndroid 18:01, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
- My issue was with the article as it was, not with an expanded article. If you want to just put it back to how you had it, then I would have a problem, though I would not necessarily revert again. (I got into a back and forth minor revert war yesterday, and am still a bit frustrated at myself for letting myself get into that.) But if you are up for expanding it, then that is great. IMHO a good article, or even a good stub > a redirect > a sub-stub. - TexasAndroid 18:57, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

- the trick I have always used, here and in RL, is to work on a number of different things, and when it gets frustrating one place, to do something else for a while. Hi the most difficult by far was Siem Reap Province. I have created Category:Siem Reap Province but there are so many angkorian sites I wasn't sure about the provincial template conflicting with the angkorian template - i left it off some of the stubs. Ha more articles - I've stubbed the National Highways now -hopefully these can be writtne into decent articles. Contribs 12:49, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Well yes I was thinking about strictly narrowing it down to just the most famous landmarks and then providing a link more... to the main Ankorian template . I'd like to add as many sites as possible to the provincial templates but in Siem Reap's case I think its best that only the most notable selection of places is listed. Obviously Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom are very famous ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:19, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh I just started Chath PierSath. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:19, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Well no of course it is only the sites actually in that province given not other Angkorian sites elsewhere. It is to connect places within that province. I though the templates already had the edit icon - I mus thave used a different template system -note the templates also need categorizing e.g Category: Cambodian Province templates and tagging also - I've just about done on Cambodia for today ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" [edit] Cambodia images
Didi you say there was a chance you could meet Vann Molyvann. Wikipedia is crying out for images of Cambodia!! Is it possible you could take a few photos wherever you are and upload them to the commons. I would be certain to use them in new articles immediately ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 14:03, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh please!!!! upload as many photos you have on Cambodia as possible to the commons. All of them -every one of them!!!!. -I regard Cambodia along with the Himilayan countries of Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan indeed amongst the most photogenic in the world. It makes an !!enormous!! difference. -I'll let you know a secret - more than often I am only attracted by articles which have pictures. Long articles without any images I started snoozing!!!! zzzzzzz! I recently kitted out [[Mongolia] with images which makes a huge difference. It is certainly the artisitc streak in me - I come from a family of painters, sculptors, poets and novelists -see my Aunt Jennifer Sullivan - I had to mention my 101 year old Grandmother in the article!!!. My mind is stimulated by colour and powerful imagery and must admit often I am guilty of scanning the text and drooling over images of places in the far east!!! I'd love for every district to have images too -of course this will take time but anything really anything you can find would be monumental!!! The National Bank of Cambodia also needs an image ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 14:24, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
I've started Cambodian clothing as a summarized article but it contains some copied text from existing articles at present. It will need a complete rewrite and references. You would have a greater knowledge of what Cambodians wear. There must be more types of Khmer garments to be included ? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:38, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mystery places
Its from a world atlas I used back last year from the early 1980s. Note many of the names are dated -I've had the same problem with other places across the world - it probaly refers to a city already on wikipedia with a different name -does it ring a bell? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 18:08, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, three bells at least. Problem is there are several places with that name and even more with Chhlang + somethingelse. It's probably a district capital (like Cheom Ksan, another ancient Blofeld orphan) North, South, East, West? What is it near?
I think this is it:
♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 18:09, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
It could refer to Chhloung District as in Chhloung ? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 18:11, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- I think to be in an Atlas is would probably be a district capitol - like Cheom Ksan above. 'Phumi' is some new word internet map sites have copied from each other. It doesn't exist in Khmer language, like poom and kooooom :) Have you still got the Atlas? perhaps check it when you get the chance and solve this mystery. Paxse 18:27, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I aim to. Ahh I just quickly left wikipedia to buy a pair of distressed blue jeans on ebay and just won them!! I was selling some stuff on ebay to raise a bit of extra cash - I was going to sell off my old stamp collection which is pretty big including some "Kambodge" stamps but I keep buying things like Hawaiian shirts and aviator sunglasses - Tyler Durden style! Paying rent is a nuisance but everyones got to do it. I'm working part time at Marks and Spencer in Culverhouse Cross. -really I should have a proper job though!! I did initally study law at Cardiff University but dropped out - I hated law but was thinking of the money. I have a BA in Science for Geography now and aim to try to get a job in ecological management soon enough where hopefully I can work abroad ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Here is the view from my attic room. See also Wenvoe images. I can't bleeive there is an article on the local pub!!!!! I think this is hilarious for a global site ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 20:18, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Ah amigo sorry to steal your thunder = Wat Bakan I thought had potential -but as i was preoccupied with distircts I didn't add any more info. Any images you can upload to the commons will be a treat. I am taking it very easy the next few days working mostly on the film lists- I've been watching some footage of Phnom Penh on Youtube -talk about traffic!!!! If you want a DYK go for it!!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 20:59, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] DYK
Cambodian clothing has been picked up by the bot as a great article for a potential DYK. But the mid section need referencing ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 10:04, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh yeah wicked!!!!! Thats a great new article -great with pictures!!!!. I am thinking about creating a new Category:Cities, towns and villages in Cambodia -this way we don't have confusing categories -all settlements (not distircts and communes of course) could go in this. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:00, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
What would be even better if we could get two Cambodian DYK'S at the same time! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:00, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
You amuse me Mr Paxse -I find you hilarious!!! = my sentiments exactly - all we seem to see is Angkor Wat and the genocide museum!!!!! I'll leave you Pursat disrict -but if you could add the commune/village tables it would help considerably - like I have been doing the districts of B.... Meancheay Province this would be great as will be the photos I'm sure - I'm getting excited to see them. I think I found a site yesterdat where we can blag some images. Kepp up the great work . El Calvo (The Bald ) ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 17:04, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Hey thanks for chipping in there. I'm not really compiling the films by genre - it is the Films by country I'm working on but its potential is clear and I supported it 100%. I am tired of such users who relish the thought of deleting other people hard work -wikipedia should cater for everybody. I personally hate Japanese manga and comics - ahh this is the worst!!!! -it is my pet hate but that doesn't give me the right to delete them because it is not a personal preference of mine!!. I've currently got a super project on the go - the entire American film history!!! still in its infancy stage. i;m a major film buff and wikipedia needed articles which document films: - check out this (you can delete the template after you've seen it) What do you think:
♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:01, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
When they are fully complete they will provide an excellent overview of film. I'm trying to put the "iconic image" of the film of that year at the top. E.g 1982 is E.T with the bike and the moon!!!! Oh by the way I found a site for older Cambodian films and got a chance to see some footage of them from the 1960s. I aim to add these films and actors when I can. Regards ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:08, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Pretty scary huh? Well don't expect it done over night!! This will gradually take probably 8 months + to complete adding a bit every time. As you know I am ambitious but everything is within possibility. This organization does not tolerate failure. I'll add some communes to the district stubs later ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:29, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I've reworded it thanks. It needs referencing though. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 14:18, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Images
Mr Paxse a present for you see User:Paxse/Koh Kong. I am waiting for you to complete this it looks fine to me!!. I've stubbed a river to fill your red link. From what I underatand many images of Flickr are created under the Creative Commons which I believe means we can use the images -if so this is brilliant news ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:01, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh! I knew there was some catch to it. Flickr is amazing for photos -the best on the web isn't it. Do you realise how much better wikipedia would become if you could upload anything!!!! Teaphoo, Tahiti and Thimpu, Bhutan I've just been looking at have thousands of BEAUTIFUL images!!! Oh wow stunning images like this just make me high!! Maybe I should leave wikipedia and just use flickr! This way I can see thousands of images on Cambodia and not have the really annoying limitations of wikipedia! But I also love information of which flickr is as good as the rubber on your shoe. Hmm -you can't have them all ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 15:55, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I think I see now which are permitted -it is the some rights reserved tag isn't it. Are my images I added to Mondulkiri Province ok? They make a hell of difference ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 17:16, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I had just noticed that before you told me. Not for commercial purposes - ahhhh!!! Well in future I'm going to lie and say its my own (half joking). How can it possibly hurt to use the images for an encyclopedia?. The creator should be very pleased a top world site like wikipedia wnats to use them ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Hello. Back in May you participated in an AfD discussion on Stephen King's inspiration. I have called this AfD for review as I believe it was deleted against consensus in the discussion. If you have a few moments, would you please read the review and weigh in with your current opinion? Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2007_July_22#Stephen_King.27s_inspiration Many thanks. [edit] An award for the whiner!!
Had a hard time huh?. Well its much appreciated. Each man unto his own. Often people are so engrossed in their own work that they have little time to recognize the efforts of others. Although I've had numerous awards -beleive it or not I have never been given the official coveted "Film barnstar" after all of my efforts in film work on wikipedia!!! Its seen as the academy award of wp:films - I guess I'm a kind of Peter O' Toole!!. Well here's your award ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 09:13, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Encyclopedia article of the century
I've begun writing a feature style article for Cambodia which will take several weeks to complete. It is an article on Deforestation in Cambodia. Its time to do some real writing!!!! I've copied from various sources and am now in the process of writing a monstrous article which I hope will reach FA someday. This will be a fantastic article when complete buts gonna takes a few weeks to do. Its useful for me too as I intend to go into forestry management eventually like my cousin in Peru. Its time wikipedia had a full detailed article on Cambodia!!!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 13:54, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
You'll also be pleased to know the bald bastard has abused the US aid website by uploading around ten of its "fair" images. We now have images of Cmabodian politics, law, education, and healthcare!!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 14:42, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh its a crucial topic -one which I have recently become aware of. I knew the problem existed in Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia as I case studied it for my finals but I didn;t have aclue about Cambodia. Sad isn;t it. Those sources are great thanks. I rarely can be bothered to write a full article like this but Cambodia needs some putting on the world map on wikipedia - and awareness of this problem to the world too. A worthy cause don't you think. Hey yes the image count is starting to develop. Best thing is to browsw all US government related sites and upload every image on Cambodia as possible ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 14:48, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oddar Meanchey map
I am working on district boundary maps, and already succeeded with one for Banteay Meanchey
, but now I want to move further to the next province and run into contradicting maps. The one at the World Food Program (claiming to be from the government as of 2000) show some straight lined boundaries of Anlong Veng, while those at the Asian Developement Bank lack the boundary between Anlong Veng and Trapeang Prasat, but have the boundary to Siam Reap the way I have seen on several maps. Which one is the right one? Can you find me correct up-to-date maps with district boundaries clean enough to draw vector images from them? andy 17:22, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] KR flag, again
Hi,
could you check the text on the banner at [9]? --Soman 21:33, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Legal status of Hawaii Page
Aloha Paxse-- I could really use your help as a member of the CSB project to take a look at this page and give your mana'o (thoughts). I am currently in a bit of a struggle over a question of "undue weight" (it is true that Hawaiians are now a minority in Hawai'i, and those both knowledgeable in history and willing and able to speak out about it are a relatively small group, but I don't think the indigenous viewpoint being squashed is ok either). I am not asking for anyone to participate in the struggle itself, but there needs to be a broader perspective, so if you can take a look at it and give your thoughts (it's okay not to know anything about the subject; it might be better that way), it would be really appreciated! I appreciate honesty, even if you do not agree with me. Aloha, --Laualoha 04:43, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Yep its OK I'm back as baldy now. I'm sorry you got fed up with wikipedia also and that your kid is sick - I'm afraid nothing much has developed on the Cambodian front still - I wish people would contribute more to it The Wild West guy 21:25, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Concerning my contributions...
Hi Paxse, this is dvtouch. You left me a message and I currently just reviewed. I'm currently new to this whole Wikipedia editing contribution thing and so it was good to receive a message from someone that included hints and pointers. Sorry if some of the information were from other sites. Should I reference and cite them or should I edit them into my own words? I hope the contributions I made towards Battambang & Siem Reap don't get reverted, because I will try to edit some of the information I added to those articles. It will take a while though because I'm currently a university student and don't have too much spare time. But yeah, my goal here on Wikipedia is to help contribute/edit towards articles related to Cambodia. Mainly at the moment, I want to work on cities & towns in Cambodia because I think a lot of them needs cleaning up, organization and updating. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dvtouch (talk • contribs) 02:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I miss you on wikipedia. I don't know why you lost interest but I always appreciated everything you did for Cambodia on the wiki and hope you can still contribute.
