Hi; as you may have guessed, my name is Grant. I live in Perth, Australia. I was born in 1965 and grew up on the border of the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions of Western Australia.

The Stirling Ranges, Western Australia. If you take away the mountains, the scenery is similar to that which I grew up with; blue sky, red dirt, star pickets and parched paddocks.

Makhaya Ntini bowls at the WACA Ground, Perth on 16/12/05, the first day of the First Test, Australia v South Africa. Can't remember who was facing, Andrew Symonds is the non-striking batter. Ntini took five wickets for 64 runs on the day. I took this with my run-of-the-mill Fuji and got lucky with the timing — both the ball and Ntini are suspended in mid-air.

[edit] Pet hates

  1. use of adjectives as nouns: "eat more dairy products" not "eat more dairy" (Consuming a shed is a recipe for indigestion.)
  2. misuse of dashes and hyphens, i.e.:
    1. emdash ( — ) only ever used as parentheses, either with or without spaces, according to style and preference, i.e.: Sdgdf sdasfasag — bvbnnbsngn jfdgjdj hfhsf agdfgf — fgagfga fasdfasdf or; Sdgdf sdasfasag—bvbnnbsngn jfdgjdj hfhsf agdfgf—fgagfga fasdfasdf.
    2. endash ( – ) used in ranges, such as "10–20" years. Now sometimes used as parentheses, usually with spaces, i.e. Sdgdf sdasfasag – bvbnnbsngn jfdgjdj hfhsf agdfgf – fgagfga fasdfasdf.
    3. hyphen ( - ), which should only ever be used both to join two words, without spaces, e.g. Hobson-Jobson. (See also en dash versus em dash.)
  3. the dodgy qualifier "in the southern hemisphere", which is popular with some of my fellow Australians; do people who use this have any idea what goes on in South America or southern Africa?
