Miss Malaysia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miss Malaysia represents Malaysia in two of the major international pageant - Miss Universe and Miss World. Both winners of the national pageant are selected at separate competitions as both pageants are owned by different organisations. Usually, the Miss Malaysia Universe pageant is held earlier to coincide with the Miss Universe pageant and the Miss Malaysia World pageant later on in the year.

The winner of these contests will hold the title of Miss Malaysia Universe or Miss Malaysia World for a one year term. The pageant does not emphasize merely on appearance but also beauty that radiates from within. Many viewed the winner of Miss Malaysia World as superior to the winner of Miss Malaysia Universe for the fact that many former Miss Malaysia World have went on to make a name for themselves as compared to former Miss Malaysia Universe. Cases in point - Michelle Yeoh , Fazira Wan Chek, Lina Teoh, Arianna Teoh, Jaclyn Lee, Tan Su Wei, Gloria Ting, Emmeline Ng and Deborah Priya Henry. Nevertheless, two former Miss Malaysia Universe stand above the rest, stamping their mark on the entertainment industry - Elaine Daly and Andrea Fonseka.

The first and only Malaysian semifinalist in the Miss Universe pageant is Josephine Lena Wong (now Fonseka) in 1970. She is the mother of Miss Malaysia Universe 2004, Andrea Fonseka.

[edit] Fatwa

Muslims are currently banned from entering any beauty pageants following a fatwa issued in 1997. Rahima Orchient Yayah was the last Muslim Miss Malaysia World titleholder in 1994 and the first Malaysian semifinalist in the international pageant. To date, apart from Rahima Orchient Yayah, only three Miss Malaysia World have made the semifinals of the Miss World pageant - Lina Teoh, Arianna Teoh and Deborah Priya Henry. Lina Teoh holds the record for the highest placement when she finished as 2nd Runner-up to Miss World 1998, Israel's Linor Abargil. One prominent Muslim former Miss Malaysia World is the singer-actress Erra Fazira. The last Muslim Miss Malaysia Universe titleholder was Suziela Binte Azrai in 1995.

Currently, it is not possible for a Muslim girl to win Miss Malaysia because of the swimsuit category of the Miss Universe and Miss World competition which contradicts with Muslim law. The last Malay girl winning Miss Malaysia World was Rahima Orchient Yayah back in 1994 and the last Malay girl winning Miss Malaysia Universe was Suziela Azrai in 1995. This rule does not apply to all Muslim populated countries however because girls of the Muslim faith still do win beauty pageants in countries such as Indonesia and Singapore.
