[edit] 2008 controversy
The election of Poulicek, a native speaker of French and Czech, has even been linked to the 2007 Belgian government formation. The reason is that, during the traditional language test, she failed to speak or understand Dutch. Knowledge of both national languages usually being an important prerequisite for a Miss Belgium[citation needed], the audience even booed her for this. [1]. The behaviour of the audience was noted across Europe [2] [3], and the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws sarcatically put the headline "Miss Belgium doesn't speak Flemish. Our country is in a deep crisis". [4] Poulicek is the daughter of a Czech father and a Belgian mother, and has spent half her life in the Czech Republic [5] While she does not speak Dutch, she is not monolingual as the popular press often suggests - she speaks French and Czech natively as well as English[6].
