[edit] Numberwang

I was surprised and disappointed to see that you had decided to delete the “Numberwang” entry. I must assume you are not English or not aware of English popular culture.

I am writing this not because I care that much about the details or even the entry having never been anything but a user of Wikipedia but to explain that having seen a number articles stating all was not well with Wikipedia and never given them much credence.

That an editor delete an article on something that they clearly know nothing about, having received no objections and as far as I can tell pretty accurate (and easily verifiable using Google) undermines (at least for me) the high esteem that I held for the quality of the editing found on Wikipedia.

I am moved to write because I needed to express my frustration that yet another really good idea appears to be going wrong going wrong.

I hope you can view the BBC as a reliable source:

I'll keep it in mind, but I simply deleted the redirect, not the article itself, which was deleted by Deb under the title NumberWang. Hiberniantears (talk) 15:33, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] subst:

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Also, please ensure that a vandal you're reporting has had the full range of warnings (from 1 to 4) and vandalised after the final one. Skipping a warning stange or reporting a vandal without cause will just annoy those who have to clear the list and won't result in the block you're seeking. Thanks and happy editing! [edit] Re: vandal warning

Hi Hiberniantears. You placed a vandal warning post on my user profile page. You thanked me for experimenting in editing a particular Wikipedia article although I do not know which article you are referring to. I generally do sign in and take full accountability when I make a change to an article. Even when I do not on occasion sign in, I am always careful in what I write and I try to be non-biased. I therefore find it strange that you should find fault with an edit I made. The only article I can think of where I may have transgressed was in relation to the term Hun. However, I promptly removed a possibly controversial edit after reading the the contributions made in the discussion page of the article. If it was not this article, I cannot think of any other article edit where you may find fault. Could you please tell me with what particular article did you feel I made an "experimental fault". I only ask because I am genuinely interested in understanding the problem, as you seem to see it. 83.70.73.48 04:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Well... let's see, IP 83.70.73.48 has only made edits to my talk page, and to the article Dundalk. My vandalism warning was for the edit from said IP address to Dundalk was was a string of vulgarity inserted into the article. If you are serious in asking me this question, then click on the user page for the IP address I just mentioned, and then click on user contributions. Hiberniantears 17:46, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

It looks like 207.166.7.209 has vandalized the Leon Sullivan again. I reversed the changes, but is there anything else we can do to keep this issue from happening again.

[edit] Pyramids

Hi Gene, I saw that you reverted my edits on a couple of pyramid related pages to include links to the pages on Ukrainian and Bosnian pyramids (and for links to the pyramid category as well). I just wanted to clarify why these links do not belong. The Bosnian "pyramid" is considered a hoax. If the digging on the Bosnian hill does eventually reveal a pyramid, then the links are justified. However, until proof of a pyramid is found, the site remains a hill, with an archeologically significant medieval village on top. In the case of the Ukrainian pyramid, the press simply carried a wrong impression of the site into the popular culture. This innacuracy was soon clarified by the archaeologist in charge. Hiberniantears 12:33, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Please do not revert the external links sections of pyramid articles again. I am well aware that the Bosnian and Ukrainian "pramids" are not really pyramids, and that the scientific consensus supports this - however that is entirely beside the point; the main reason they are known by most people is because some people claimed they were pyramids; it is not for us to make value judgements concerning those claims; our job is simply to provide links to all pyramid-elated articles and let people read those articles and decide for themselves. The "see also" list is a list of related subjects - it is not merely a list of "legitimate pyramids". --Gene_poole 01:39, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I think when something is either falsely called, or accidentally called, something it is not, no reasonable source of information would list it said entity under the misleading heading. For example, when a toddler calls a car a boat, the rest of the world does not have to amuse the toddler by now considering cars as boats "because some people claimed they were" boats. I realize you're taking an inclusionist stance on this, and I respect that. However, I think the fact that the articles themselves are already improperly named is inclusionist enough. Including the Ukrainian and Bosnian "pyramids" in a list of legitimate pyramids is very efficient way to undermine any intellectual weight this encyclopedia has. I think making lists of things which are entirely opposed to the scientific consensus (and in the case of the dig site in Ukraine, against the stated clarification by the archaeologist leading the dig) is irresponsible. To that end, I am once again making my reverts, but in the interest of fairness, I am also moving this conversation to the talk pages of the articles. Hiberniantears 12:39, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Please note that your continued reversions on this subject do not comply with WP:NPOV. Accordingly, I am reverting them again. --Gene_poole 21:46, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
It is not a matter of "reverting ad infinitum" - it is a matter of complying with Wikipedia policy - which your continued removal of valid data directly contravenes. Stop it. --Gene_poole 21:52, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for respecting my edits. Just a reminder though that we are not here to "debate" anything - the purpose of any discussion and/or poll is to establish a broad community consensus. --Gene_poole 22:56, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nazarene Bible Quizzing

I undid the redirect to Bible Quiz in that I will be adding much more specific information on Nazarene Bible Quizzing alone in order to assist in training new quizzers and quiz officials. There will be enough information here to fill the page on its own. I just need the time to do so. Though, please do not add a link to this page from Bible Quiz quite yet as it needs more work. Thanks!

  • Sounds fine to me. However, be mindful that there is a section within Bible Quiz on the Nazarene kind, and as such other editors may also see fit to merge the two articles. Also consider adding your information to the Bible Quiz article itself, rather than a unique article. In the case of a redirect, users searching for Nazarene Bible Quiz will be brought to the Bible Quiz page, and could then scroll down to the Nazarene section.

In the interest of avoiding any other redirects, make sure to add a detailed note to the article's talk page, so that other editors will be aware of your plan. Happy editing! Hiberniantears 21:46, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:GMU Seal.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:GMU Seal.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. [edit] Help

Hello :-) You were involved in writing the article Stereotypes of white race ethnic groups and right now it's nominated for deletion. I really hope you could oppose it being deleted and ask to keep it. It's a nice interesting article, and only the polit-correction fanatics oppose to it (but those oppose to everything. I myself am white, Russian by the father and Jewish by the mother, and i really enjoyed the article and even created the Jews section and added information to the Russians section). Your oppinion on the article should be stated here. Thank you. M.V.E.i. 16:14, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

I only reverted some vandalism once... I'm not a contributor to that page, and am not really certain it belongs here. Hiberniantears 16:58, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

I was not vandalizing anything, and I shall tell you why. Vandalism is when you

  • add nonsense to a page
  • put copyrighted material on a page that does not qualify as fair use

I was not adding nonsense, and I was putting what was under fair use back up. I have not broken any rules, have not started a revert war, have not broken the three-revert rule, and have not done anything remotely obscene.

I will undo my edits anyway. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.67.159.96 (talk) 19:37, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Changes to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Hello,

I believe my removal of the POV and Dispute tags on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus should not have been reverted. I do not believe these constitute a vandalism and believe certain users are constatly re-introducing these tags to de-credit the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. I believe the wiki page is already for two sided and paints a fair picture of the northern part of the Island and its history.

I would also like to complain about Vonones threatening me with a Block for removing these tags. Why can I not block the people who put these tags in the first place?

Thank You. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.137.53.47 (talk) 20:45, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

As Hiberniantears is not responding, I shall. Wikipedia has procedures, which include the placing of tags. Once placed a tag should not be removed until the matter has been discussed at the appropriate venue. It may be decided that the criteria for the tag was not breached. Placing a tag on an article does not mean that the article is wrong, only that someone believes it should be discussed.
Removing tags before the process is complete is regarded as vandalism, and Vonones was correct to report this. Since you were attempting to discuss this matter I have removed the vandalism report to discuss this with you. If you wish to participate in the discussion regarding why the article was tagged you will need to register an account. LessHeard vanU 20:55, 31 August 2007 (UTC) Removing the tag again will very likely attract a block, so please don't yield to temptation.
My apologies for not responding earlier. Simply put, LessHeard vanU hit the nail on the head. The tags should simply indicate to you that there either is, or should be, a conversation discussing on the article talk page whatever the specific tag indicates is in need of attention inside the actual article. If you disagree with the tag, it is not your responsibility to remove the tag without discussion, and discovering if there is consensus to remove the tags. There are a number of steps following this to see that an article receives an objective airing out from editors not caught up in a given dispute. If you would like to hear more on this, I would be happy to walk you through the various avenues available to you. Hiberniantears 21:50, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

On my user page I have this tool box, but it is pushed to the bottom, is there anyway I can get it to fill into the white space? Thanks. Phgao 16:15, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Well there is the heading toolbox, but the actual box is way way below, due to interference by the userboxes. So yes, I dont really want seperate links, but merely to reposition the whole box, if that's any clearer. Phgao 17:23, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

What is Wiki's policy on banning users who for example previously have been warned multiple times (more than 4), and then after a couple of months come back and re vandalise. How many warnings should they get before ban? Thanks. Phgao 07:59, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

True point, digital means of teaching are being increasingly common, and hence many schools would probably try to introduce wikipedia for a variety of means. So it's best to assume good faith.

No problem. You actually reverted to my version, rolling back the anon vandal. I've had the same problem with Vandal Proof recently, where the edit summary indicates a rollback of the version prior to what is actually being reverted, and then the warning is dropped in the wrong place. [edit] You're a sysop!

Hi, Hiberniantears, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop!

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, block anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on articles for deletion for more than 5 days (provided there's a consensus), protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=
PS Please add you name to WP:LA!

Hey there Hiberniantears, Congratulations on becoming an administrator. [edit] Child Poverty In Renfrew County

Hi, I am wondering if you can help me.

I am writing to you hoping that you can help. My name is Lyn Smith and I am the coordinator of Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network, I am also very technically challenged! (This is my problem). I registered our network in the hope of raising awareness of child poverty, I did register (kudos for me), and tried to start an article (with info I thought may be helpful) and when I went onto Wikipedia noticed the following message

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Please do not add copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder, as you did to Child Poverty in Renfrew County. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Toddst1 19:11, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User:Renfrew County Child Poverty Action (CPAN) A tag has been placed on User:Renfrew County Child Poverty Action (CPAN), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} should not be placed on talk pages. Please remove it and place it on the content page. on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Calton | Talk 23:52, 31 October 2007 (UTC) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I have tried everyway to find an edit or even my original doc to edit, also Carlton/talk, but I am left exhausted, frustrated and feeling very dumb! My 17 year old daughter said that maybe I should have omitted the phone number or address etc of our network (which is not a business, but helps those in need) How do I share this info with others so that they are aware of child poverty in Renfrew County (or Ontario, or Canada)? And the issues that come with it (social exclusion, stigma, judgmental attitudes) I also feel like I inadvertently have done something very wrong, when all I want to do is to provide information on an extremely important topic.

I am wondering if you can get me on the right track, I thank you in advance for any help that you can offer me.

Yours respectfully,

Lyn Smith, Coordinator

[edit] My Rfa

Thanks for voting in my Rfa, which I withdrew from yesterday. Though I did not get promoted, I see this Rfa as being a success nonetheless. What I got out of this Rfa will help me to be a better, all around editor. Because of this Rfa I have decided to become better in other areas of editing. I'm not going to just be a vandalfighter. Though vandalfighting is good, being active in all areas of editing is even better. Have a nice day.--SJP 22:45, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Turkey

Hi. I see that you have been active in that page for a while, undertaking some overhauls of the article. I left some notes about in the talk page, would you care to join in the debate? Cheers! Baristarim 05:13, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

By the way, I just wanted to let you know that I reverted to the full history section. The mass removal also made some references unworkable which were cited elsewhere in the article. I left notes on the talk page, but please be careful as not to forget the quality of the article. Somewhere you compared the loading time of Portugal and Turkey, but Portugal is not a even a Good Article (GA), let alone FA. I think that the full history section is extremely useful since it also helps situate the country's current foundations (Turkish) with its multicultural and imperial past for the uninformed reader. Anyways, feel free to contact me for any of the points above. cheers Baristarim 07:38, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
I wanted to say that there were no issues raised about this in the FAC, on the contrary many people thought that the article had great flow and was very informative covering every aspect of Turkey. I had to roll the history section back not because we shouldn't have a discussion - but because I think that the debate should start from the full history version, rather than discuss the possible expansions to the 1923-onwards version, see what I mean? that's all. However, you are right: nothing is set in stone. I am aware that you have been trying to improve the article and I laud your efforts so I apologize if it might have been seen as disrespectful. We should continue this discussion in the article's talk page so others can participate. Baristarim 17:55, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Camp Monroe

Can I ask you why felt the need to delete the Camp Monroe page? Why is this considered advertising when there are plenty of camps listed under Category:Summer_camps. I am not advertising, I have no active connection with the camp. TheBY 08:52, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandal reporting: Syncing with my own user page

[edit] Vandal Reporting

Hi Excirial,

I have been blocking a lot of editors which you have reported to WP:AIV recently. Just wanted to thank you for your efforts, and give some tips on increasing your effectiveness. I noticed that a number of your reports include the reason "vandalism directly after release of block", but that this has often not been the case. For [10]. While these have in fact most often been legitimate cases of vandalism, the level of vandalism has not always warranted a report to AIV. In the example above, the vandalism did not take place right after the release of the block, but in fact a number of days had passed. I have seen a few other examples where the period of time was weeks, or months. In a few instances I have not blocked because there had not been much current vandalism (which is not to say a block might not happen eventually), and the fact that an IP has been blocked before, does not mean that they should automatically be on a short leash. In the case of an IP with an established history of vandalism and blocks, feel free to circumvent the normal four warning process, but do at least try to issue a few warnings, and verify that vandalism is still in progress when you report to WP:AIV. A lot of admins are unlikely to block an account that stopped editing hours before being reported, or did not make any edits following a final warning. The process can be a little annoying, but following it more routinely will make the blocking process go more smoothly. The less detective work and admin has to do to make sure warning are in place, vandalism is recurrent, and that actions reported are accurate, the quicker we can put a stop to vandalism. Hope this helps, and keep up the good work! Hiberniantears 14:41, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Many thanks for brining this to my attention! Lupin, which i use to revert vandalism, has a checkbox that states "Vandalism after recent release of block". Personally i have been interpreting this as a two week period, as edits prior to that date are to long ago to call them recent. But it seems like lupin reports this as "vandalism DIRECTLY after a block release", which is certainly not the case.

Most times i use that option in conjunction with a "vandalism after final warning" to emphasize that the vandal is a second time offender. But recently i started to use these alone for schools which received long term block. Guess id better lay of that checkbox use a bit, as its not entirely doing what i suspected it would. :) --Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 14:53, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
I figured this was the case, since all your reports have in fact included actual vandals. I concur with your reasoning on the two week period... we should see about getting a check box for that option! :-) Your response reminded me of one other thing. If someone previously received a final warning on their talk page, and was either blocked following that warning, or did not vandalise again for a period of time (let's go -arbitrarily- with two days), start the warning process over again. I think with a long term vandal it is OK to skip warnings 1 and 2, but if someone has only received one set of warnings before, start over from 1. This just covers us against the "I'm not the same person who was using this IP before" argument. Hiberniantears 15:08, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, two days is very short i think, as a lot of the vandals i see around vandalize with 2-3 day intervals, but are still the same persons (Such at the "I LIKE PIE!!!" guy). Personally i am on an IP that hasn't changed since last year (Quite funny to see those old edits again!). Perhaps the warning period should match the warning history of two weeks. It might be a little long, but lets be honest: No one gets instant blocked. Everyone gets at least two warnings before getting reported, and you wont receive a vandalism warning if you didn't vandalize :). --Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 15:26, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit war POV dispute brewing

There is a bit of an edit war/POV dispute brewing at Spanish Courts for Violence against Women. I've blocked one user for sockpuppetry (per checkuser) - although it might only be meatpuppetry and I'm still considering that. I restored the article after realizing that the PROD had been contested and later closed the (withdrawn) AFD. I've cautioned another editor for incivility. You are the only admin I recognize in WikiProject Spain, can you lend a hand? GRBerry 15:47, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for adding this to your watch list. It seems to have simmered down without further intervention. I think having you keep it on your watchlist will be good, as some of the edit summaries were in Spanish, and many of the sources are, so you'll be in a better position than I to monitor the article. [edit] League of Copyeditors roll call

Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

[edit] Vin DiCarlo

Hi, I see you speedy deleted this article. Can you please copy it to my userspace. Though I was not a contributor to the article I do recall briefly skimming over it once or twice, and I'm pretty sure it did assert his significance. If not, this can easily be rectified if it is restored as he has been featured in the media numerous times at the very least (just simply from those that I'm aware of). Anyway, I'd like to look over the past form of the article. Thanks.Mathmo Talk 05:34, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rudget!

Dear Hiberniantears, my sincere thanks for your support in my second request for adminship, which ended with 113 supports, 11 opposes, and 4 neutral. I would especially like to thank my admin coach and nominator, Rlevse and Ryan Postlethwaite who in addition to Ioeth all inspired me to run for a second candidacy. I would also like to make a special mention to Phoenix-wiki, Dihyrdogen Monoxide and OhanaUnited who all offered to do co-nominations, but I unfortunately had to decline. I had all these funny ideas that it would fail again, and I was prepared for the worst, but at least it showed that the community really does have something other places don't. Who would have though Gmail would have been so effective? 32 emails in one week! (Even if it does classify some as junk :P) I'm glad that I've been appointed after a nail biting and some might call, decision changing RFA, but if you ever need anything, just get in touch. The very best of luck for 2008 and beyond, Rudget. 16:11, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Muhammad FAQ

Why did you delete this with no discussion on the talk page first? The talk page still has links to it, so it's probably going to be re-created a few more times. This seems a bit heavy-handed.—Chowbok 01:50, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Actually, don't bother replying to this on my talk page; I've rolled this into a general complaint at [[Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Heavy-handed admin behavior at Muhammad. —Chowbok 02:11, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Why was Muhammad FAQ deleted? It looks to me to be very arbitrary. That page was an extension of the Talk:Muhammad and was a tool used to try to calm the mass wave of people who have never used wikipedia before coming in and remove pictures of Muhammad. That was hard work on the part of honest editors to try to make this encyclopedia better, and you just deleted it without even knowing what it was. Put it back. NOW. Zazaban (talk) 02:15, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Stay calm, it was probably just an error. Avruchtalk 02:28, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
I've restored the sub-article in question. Hiberniantears would appear to have accidentally deleted it. The article was vandalized, a CSD was placed on it without checking the history, and was subsequently deleted. If I've missed something, please feel free to reverse this action, but it seems to be a simple misunderstanding. Not a big deal; let's move on. Kuru talk 02:31, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
The vandalism was the second time it was deleted, it was deleted the first time for 'being a talk page with no article.' It appears Hiberniantears simply deleted it without reading it or knowing what it was. Zazaban (talk) 02:32, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
You're correct. I missed the first time stamp. Kuru talk 02:44, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Block of Ravaghi ardabili|

Just a little question on the block of this user. Is the amount of vandalism really just enough for a one day block? This entire game of creating CSD pages has been going on since yesterday, the user has been properly warned and i don't think that it will stop any time soon. Besides, the sheer amount of vandalism would be enough for 2-3 blocks if each separate instance would have resulted in a warning. Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 22:45, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] CfD nomination of Category:Shuttle-Derived Launch Vehicle

I have nominated Category:Shuttle-Derived Launch Vehicle (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) for renaming to Category:Shuttle-Derived Launch Vehicles (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at the discussion page. Thank you. GW_SimulationsUser Page | Talk 19:43, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Done! Sounds fine to me, and I noted it on the discussion page. Thanks for leaving me the note. Hiberniantears (talk) 19:47, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Massachusetts Article

As a resident of Massachusetts, I take umbrage with the suggested impropriety of calling my fellow citizens "massholes". I think you'll find that the word is used widely in common parlance; in my experience, far more often than "Bay Stater". I humbly suggest the addition of "masshole" as a proper demonym in the article.

I hope corrective action is swiftly taken to correct this mistake.

[edit] Parthian Empire

Hi. I noticed you were also working on the Parthian Empire article this morning. I hope my edits didn't interfere with yours. I'll be doing various edits to the page throughout the day, do you plan on making any more edits? The reason I ask is so we can avoid editing the same sections at the same time. Respectfully, Thomas Lessman (talk) 18:03, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] thank spam

Thank you for voting in my RfA, which passed with 194 supporting, 9 opposing, and 4 neutral.

Your kindness and constructive criticism is very much appreciated. I look forward to using the tools you have granted me to aid the project. I would like to give special thanks to Tim Vickers, Anthony and Acalamari for their nominations.

Thank you again, VanTucky

[edit] G. David Schine

Rather than just silently reverting, why don't join the discussion on this article's Talk page? I'd be interested to hear the reasoning behind your support of your preferred version. RedSpruce (talk) 15:18, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

I have no stake in the G David Schine article. I only reverted you to move back one version to another admin who was stabilizing the article. I took notice through this ANI post. It would appear that you are behaving in a manner that brought you a recent block, but I was called away before I finished evaluating. Hiberniantears (talk) 15:25, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. It might be best to avoid taking actions or making comments on a situation that you haven't evaluated yet, since by definition those actions and comments are uninformed. RedSpruce (talk) 15:34, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Srictly speaking, it is my responsibility here to become informed and take action. That said, please don't regard my rollback as punitive. Rather, I moved the article back to a version in line with community consensus while I evaluate the larger issue. I see that you and the Richard Arthur Norton have had a contentious relationship, but that you have both managed to discuss thing civily as well. I am reaching out to another admin who has been more informed on this apparently long standing issue. Hiberniantears (talk) 15:40, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
I agree that it is your responsibility as an admin to become informed and take action. I only hope that in the future you'll try to do things in that order.
Unfortunately no admin (including Scarian) has taken the time to become informed and offer a considered opinion on this long-standing dispute. If you have any ongoing interest in this dispute, I think my best articulation of my disagreement with RAN is here: User talk:Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )#Discussion. As you can see, RAN has not seen fit to grace me with a response. Perhaps you will have an opinion you'd like to share. RedSpruce (talk) 18:27, 24 April 2008 (UTC) and 11:14, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi Hiberniantears

I left a small comment. Right now I'm a bit exhausted so that will have to suffice for now. To be honest, I think an article/topic ban would be a productive/efficient way to deal with this type of thing. It does seem like RedSpruce and another editor are constantly battling over that article. Sorry my comment wasn't any larger. Perhaps I could elaborate on it later on. Thanks for mailing me! [edit] Bible Unearthed

Hi H. I don't want an edit war either. And I'm quite happy to see the summary shortened. It's just that I put a lot of work into that summary (misguided tho I may have been) and don't want to have to start from scratch. Wouldn't it be simpler to leave the current summary on the page and shorten it? PiCo (talk) 16:27, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Redspruce

You commented at the active ANI on RedSpruce, now the deletion of quotes in the citations has moved to the article Melvin Purvis, this is now after 3 ANIs, and at least 2 RFCs, and a 24 hour block. The consensus at all being that using the quote parameter in citations is not cluttering the article, but is helpful in documenting the sometimes controversial information in the article. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 14:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lady Aleena's RfA

Hiberniantears...Thank you for supporting my nomination for adminship. Through it I have become aware of a great many people who can help me in my future editing endeavors. Even though I was not promoted, your support shows that I still have something to contribute to Wikipedia, even if it is minor edits to fix spelling and grammar to working in WikiProjects to help others make great articles. If you wish to further discuss the nomination, please use its talk page. Stop by my talk page anytime, even if it is just to say hello. Have a wonderful day! - LA @ 04:41, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: SOCKS

SOCKS is a type of internet proxy- for example, people will install a proxy server on a computer, and have a network connect to the Internet through the proxy. In some cases (like this one), the proxy can be delibrately or accidentally misconfigured to allow anybody to use it- it could be human error, a virus, etc.

Since open proxies can be used by anyone, they can cause problems. People can use an open proxy to mask their real IP address, so that they can do things without getting caught, like creating and using sockpuppets, or vandalism. And because of that, Wikipedia blocks open proxies. Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 20:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

One second. I had written instructions, but hit "Back" by mistake on my mouse, and wiped them out. Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 20:51, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Heres the instructions:
  1. Open ipchicken.com, and note your IP address at the moment.
  2. Open the Preferences window (Tools -> Options under Windows, Edit->Configuration under Linux)
  3. Click the "Advanced" button at the top (it has an icon of a gear), and select the "Network" tab that comes up.
  4. Click the "Settings" button under "Connection".
  5. In the window that pops up, select "Manual proxy configuration". In the big blank, put in 202.47.69.219 and in the small blank, put in 1080
  6. Click OK, and OK out of the other window. Reload ipchicken, and your IP address should be that of the proxy.

[edit] User:PIO & page protection

Hi Hiberniantears, many thanks for acting on my request for page protection. Much appreciated. Hopefully it'll save us a bit of aggravation at that article. Just a couple of minor queries, if I may. Would you consider raising it to two weeks to bring it into line with what Mastcell has done here [12], here [13] and here [14]. Then they'll all become unprotected the same day, and in a fortnight (as I suspect may be necessary), they can be re-protected together. Additionally, perhaps you could add here [15] that you've protected the page so other admins can ignore it? Many thanks, AlasdairGreen27 (talk) 21:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks :-) AlasdairGreen27 (talk) 15:11, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Requesting an Editor Review

Hi, you opposed my last RFA at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Gary King a few weeks ago. I have decided to open an Editor Review at Wikipedia:Editor review/Gary King so I could receive a new assessment for my recent activity on Wikipedia. I would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to look over my recent contributions and point out areas where I could improve. Thanks in advance! Gary King (talk) 05:23, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mistake

Your mistake is evident here because IPs of user PIO were different: no 151.70.... was used by PIO. I am an informatic and I know edit war by user DIREKTOR/AlasdairGreen27 on that article. Regards.--Ciolone (talk) 12:38, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] My recent RfA

Thank you for supporting my RfA, which unfortunately didn't succeed. The majority of the opposes stated that I needed more experience in the main namespace and Wikipedia namespace and talk space, so that is what I will do. I have made a list and I hope I will be able to get through it. I will go for another RfA in about three month's time and I hope you will be able to support me then as well. If you have any other comments for me or wish to be notified when I go for another RfA, please leave them on my talk page. If you wish to nominate me for my next RfA, please wait until it has been about three months. I will not be checking back to this page so if you would like to comment or reply please use my talk page. Thanks again for participating in my RfA! ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 06:36, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
