Grimstadbanen was a Norwegian railway between Rise and Grimstad in Aust-Agder. Opened on September 14, 1907, the railway was a branch line of Treungenbanen, later Arendalsbanen. Grimstadbanen was abandoned on September 1, 1961 when passenger transport terminated.[1]

[edit] History

The railway was built as a narrow gauge (1067 mm) line from Grimstad to Frolund by private investors, where the railway connected to the state built railway between Arendal and Frolund that opened in 1908. The railway was nationalized and became part of Norges Statsbaner on January 24, 1912.[1] The railway was extended via Nelaug to Treungen in Telemark by 1913, though this railway became to the national rail network in 1935 when Sørlandsbanen connected to Treungenbanen. After Norges Statsbaner (NSB) eventually acquired the railway, and upgraded it to standard gauge (1435 mm) on November 9, 1936 just after Arendalsbanen; the latter was converted to standard gauge because it was for three years the terminus of Sørlandsbanen. NSB operated a branch line rail service to Grimstad from Rise Station until 1961, when the railway was abandoned. [2] Part of the railway is now a hiking trail.
