Clarke Quay MRT Station (NE5) is a station on the North East MRT Line in Singapore. It is located next to Swissôtel Merchant Court on Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road and Merchant Road. Located directly above the station is the mixed development complex, The Central.
The station is located on the opposite side of the Singapore River where Clarke Quay is actually situated. The distance between Clarke Quay and the previous station, Chinatown, is the shortest distance between two MRT stations in Singapore, a mere 360 metres. The reverse bungee ride, the Ministry of Sound nightclub and Club MoMo are located near to the station. The station occupies the site of the former Ellenborough Market, which has since been demolished. The shopping mall Riverside Point is also located near this station.
Currently, the station has one of the lowest riderships along the North East Line, probably because it is on the wrong side of the Singapore River, and also partly due to the lack of developments surrounding the station, as well as its proximity with Chinatown Station. Development of the areas surrounding Clarke Quay station, in particular The Central and Clarke Quay Festival Village, are expected to bring more passengers to use the station.[citation needed]
The Art in Transit artwork featured in this station is The Reflections by Chua Ek Kay.
When the Downtown MRT Line is built, Chinatown MRT Station will become an interchange, thus making this station one of three stations that is between 2 interchanges (along with Lorong Chuan MRT Station and Tanjong Pagar MRT Station).
