[edit] How you can help

[edit] Structure

[edit] Infobox information

Articles should use Template:Infobox road, and all known info should be supplied. See the Infobox section on applicable flags as well as standards for the routebox.

[edit] Introduction

The introduction describes the route. Depending on the route this section may just name the direction (E/W or N/S) and termination points, or may go into considerable detail. However, the majority of detail, such as progress by town or county, should be reserved for the next section.

[edit] Route description

This section is for describing the route itself and its progression across Alabama. Regardless of the route's length, progression should be described from south to north or west to east, since that is the direction that mileposts go. There should not be a standalone list of communities; see Wikipedia:Embedded list for details on why. There should also not be a separate trivia or miscellanea section (see Wikipedia:Trivia sections).

[edit] History

Any historical information known about the route should be noted.

[edit] Major intersections or Exit list

The contents of this section may vary by route. Refer to the table below and WP:ELG for the appropriate section header and further instructions.

Route composition Section header title What should be here
All grade-separated interchanges; no at-grade intersections Exit list An exit list designed in accordance with the Interstate exit list guide
Mixture of grade-separated interchanges and at-grade intersections Major intersections or Exit list Depending on the route in question, either a junction table or a "combo" exit list featuring exits and intersections can be used.
All at-grade intersections; few or no grade-separated interchanges Major intersections A junction table for at-grade intersections

Place relevant internal links here, if they exist.

[edit] References

Place all references here, using the <ref></ref> tags in the article and the {{reflist}} tag in this section.

[edit] External links

Place relevant external links which are not references here, if they exist.

[edit] Categories

All state highways should include the category tag: [[Category:State highways in Alabama|nnnA]] where nnn is a 3-digit route number, and A is the letter designation if any (e.g. SR-1A is "001A", SR-2 is "002"). Also place the article in the category for any counties and cities it passes through, with a sort key of - for example - "State Route 001A" (for SR-1A), "U.S. Highway 80-2" (for US-280), or "Interstate 59-4" (for I-459).

[edit] Talk pages

{{Template:U.S. Roads WikiProject|state=AL}} should be placed at the top of all talk pages of articles related to Alabama Highways.

[edit] Infobox

The infobox to use is Template:Infobox road.

This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete routebox on the article page, just place this before any other text and fill in the variables. Remove any that do not apply.

{{Infobox road
|state=AL
|type=SR
|route=
|alternate_name=
|length_mi=
|length_ref=<ref name=MP>[[Alabama Department of Transportation]], [http://www.dot.state.al.us/NR/rdonlyres/7B15B300-359D-413A-A7FA-ED33C8C261CD/0/CountyMilePostMaps.pdf County Milepost Maps], accessed September 2007</ref>
|length_round=3
|established=
|direction_a=
|terminus_a=
|junction=
|direction_b=
|terminus_b=
|previous_type=SR (note: use US or I if applicable)
|previous_route=
|next_type=SR
|next_route=
}}

For the above parameters here's what you should fill in:

  • route: This is the number of the route the article is about
  • alternate_name: Use in situations where the entire route has another common name (i.e. SR-152 is North Boulevard)
  • length_mi: This is the length of the route in miles
  • established: This is the date the route was commissioned or assigned to an alignment that has evolved into the current one
  • direction_a: This should be either South or West
  • terminus_a: This is where the route begins and is either at the southern terminus or western terminus.
  • junction: major junctions; see WP:INNA
  • direction_b: The opposite of direction_a
  • terminus_b: where the route ends, in accordance with the guidelines set forth with starting_terminus
  • previous_route: The number of the route preceding this one; the "priority" is Interstate-US-SR - in other words, the order would be SR-4, I-5, US-5, SR-5, US-6, SR-6, SR-7
  • next_route: The number of the route succeeding this one

[edit] Templates

{{jct}}

Not required, but a useful template for infoboxes and intersection/exit lists. See template:jct/doc for usage.
