WGMN (1240 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a sports talk format. Licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, USA, it serves the Roanoke, Virginia and New River Valley areas. The station is currently owned by 3 Daughters Media.
This station had originally been WROV-AM, which was the leading Top 40 station in Roanoke during the 60s, and 70s and was owned by Burt & Muriel Levine. In 1980 , WROV got new FM competition from 100,000 watt WXLK "K92", and ratings waned.
In the late 80s , Tom Joyner, who had just recently purchased WMVA-FM in Martinsville & moved the station's tower closer to Roanoke with the intention of debuting an FM Rock station in the market, purchased WROV-AM from the Levines , and WMVA-FM became WROV-FM. See WROV-FM
Shortly after the purchase , WROV became an automated oldies station.
Joyner later sold both stations to Benchmark Communications , who in turn sold the stations to what is now Clear Channel. In 1998 WROV-AM became WGMN. In 2006 as part of a company wide divesiture of smaller stations, Clear Channel sold WGMN to 3 Daughters Media.
