The 2008 South Carolina United States Senate election will be held on November 4, 2008. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is seeking a second term, but will face a primary challenge from Buddy Witherspoon on June 10 because of the positions he has taken that have put him at odds with his party and South Carolina constituents. No major Democratic candidate filed for the race and it has been rated "Safe Republican" by Congressional Quarterly. This Senate seat was held for much of the latter part of the 20th century by beloved South Carolina icon Strom Thurmond. On May 10th, the South Carolina Working Families Party held a statewide nominating convention and for the first time, it nominated a candidate for statewide office Michael Cone. Cone is also seeking the Democratic Party nomination, South Carolina allows electoral fusion.
