Manchester Airport railway station is the station that serves Manchester Airport, and is built into the airport's terminal buildings. The station was opened together with the second airport terminal in 1993.

The station is situated 16 km (9¾ miles) south of Manchester Piccadilly at the end of a short branch from Piccadilly to Wilmslow Line. It is accessed via a triangular junction located between Heald Green and Styal.

The station platforms are connected by escalator, elevator, ramps and an elevated covered walkway (known as the "Sky Link") to the airport terminal buildings in which a manned railway ticket office is situated. Throughout the airport complex, the railway station is known as "The Station" and is signposted as such.

There are plans to link Manchester Airport to the city's Metrolink tram system but these are currently on hold awaiting Government decision.

[edit] Services

Northern Rail and TransPennine Express are the two current franchise holders who operate services between Manchester Airport, Crewe (for connections to the South of England) and Manchester Piccadilly, various destinations across the North of England and also since December 2007 to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Carlisle.

There is a very frequent service from the Airport to Piccadilly. Services also operate during the night to Piccadilly and beyond (York, Doncaster and Blackpool North).

There are currently eight trains per hour to Manchester Piccadilly. This will increase to nine from December 2008 when the third platform opens and Northern Rail will run an additional local stopping train every hour. [1]There aren't any long distance services that approach the airport from the south, a Manchester Airport to Derby previously operated but was made to terminate at Crewe due to poor passenger numbers.[2]

Plans were drawn up in the 1990s for a direct rail link from Altrincham and Stockport to the airport (achieved by linking the Altrincham-Stockport line to the Manchester-Manchester Airport line that it crosses.) [3]However, these plans failed to materialise.
