I don't think linking to a half-baked (quarter-baked?) list like that improves this article in any way.

I think that was a pretty rude thing to say considering I wasn't even the one who made the page. I thought a nice link to the page that I restored would be nice because I thought cleaning up the page and giving it a nice place in Wikipedia was the thing to do. Whether "half-baked" or not, something someone else worked hard on doing does not deserve to be just left out, especially by someone as trustworthy as a Wikipedia Administrator. After all, isn't that what Wikipedia is all about; its just a bunch of amateurs building upon the work of another amateur. This was in reference to this edit of mine, removing a newly-inserted link to List of famous people who died of pneumonia from Pneumonia, a Featured Article. I don't mind saying that the list, as it now stands, is a terrible article. I'm glad you are trying to improve it! It isn't rude to call a bad article a bad article. (The saying at WIkipedia is comment on the edit, not the editor.) But until it's a lot better than it is now, it hurts a good article like Pneumonia to have a prominent link to it.

By the way, you should sign talk page posts by typing four tildes (~~~~)

Well... if you have a reference for all of these statistic from one source. Instead of just one source per page per fact. (ie.: adding this source to the article of 1924 http://www.olympic.org/uk/athletes/results/search_r_uk.asp )Then perhaps it may be time saving to simple incorperate the reference into the template that already happens to be on the 50 odd pages. ie.: Put you bibliorgraphy into Template:Olympic games medal count. sort of like what I did by adding the reference required, NPOV, delete, etc.

I've removed the AfD notice and other nonsense from the template. Since the accurate listings are usually available on the IOC website after the event I think calling WP:CITE is pointless at this stage. Hey Jared, there is a bit of debate on the talk page concerning the Soviet Bloc states and their medal tallies. Feel free to verse your opinion on the subject. I felt that we should continue to count Russia and the USSR as separate entities as well as with East and West Germany since they each participated separately. Another user was claiming that the list was biased toward the US, so I was just trying to explain why that isn't so. I totally agree that there should be a universal convention on how to list the medal tables...or else anyone can dispute the counts and risk losing the tables altogether. Thank you for your message. I am not sure whether my contribution should be on the Wikipedia:Olympic_conventions page or the discussion page on the 2006 winter olympics medal count. I have no contribution for the actual ranking itself. My contribution concerned the following passage:

"The "Rank By Total" table shows the country's rank in terms of total number of medals won. For ties, the number of golds is taken into consideration next and then the number of silvers. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically. This is the system used in the U.S. and Canada."

I believe (I'm not sure, though) that the last sentence should be changed, because Radio-Canada does not use this system, so I believe it to be possible that this system is only used in English-Canada. I appreciate your creation of this page, and I think that by gathering the community of editors for Olympic pages together into one place to vote on standards that should be used in order to unite all of the topics with some basic guidelines to follow, but here are some problems that I've identified with the page, and I think that it can be drastically improved by fixing these. Please let me know what you think.

• Lack of enumerated goals/purposes. This is the first thing that needs to be done right away. There needs to be a opening paragraph that lists exactly what the purpose of the page is. Is it there to provide suggestions for future edits? Will pages be changed to look like this if the guidelines established have not been followed? Is everything not spelled out on the page against Wikipedia policy for editing Olympics pages? There needs to be a list of exactly what the page means to editors who plan to follow it and to editors who don't follow it, and it needs to be shown how powerful the page is, whether it is official Wikipedia policy or merely suggested guidelines.

• Bedlam. There is far too much happening on the page. It is getting difficult to tally the votes because every vote is a paragraph long, and for every vote there is a question or comment discussing it. My suggestion would be to move ALL discussion to the chat page, and on the main page only leave supportvotes, opposevotes, and neutralvotess with the voter's signature, with no discussion listed, or maybe allow one line per vote if you want.

• Poll oversaturation. From now on new polls should have to pass some kind of test on the discussion page before being moved to the main page, and the rules for a poll moving to the main page need to be made clear. When a format is being voted on, a second, contradictory format cannot be polled at the same time until the first loses. Maybe something as simple as having a poll get a second nomination would suffice. Simple rules like this will make all of our lives easier.

There needs to be rule and order on that page if it is going to be used as a reference for editors. Please think about my suggestions and let me know if I'm out of line, or if you have more ideas, or what. Thanks. --Josilot 15:50, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

You sound like you've got things under control. My original idea was to have a purpose/goals section on the front page and then a closed poll summary (which doesn't exist yet) and then a list of open polls after that, with just support, oppose, or neutral, and signature of each person. From that point, all that's left to fix is the talk page with what is allowed. As far as discussion, pretty much anything should be allowed. And have a separate nomination for new polls section maybe. I have no idea how to format everything the best way. Here is what I had in mind for the polls on the main page: User:Josilot/Sandbox. You can do it as you see fit, but to reduce confusion you should copy all the votes from the previous polling to the main page where applicable. In this case the "Wikipedia community" simply decided the wrong thing. It seems to me obvious that in all cases the right thing is to use the official terminology for each sport in the Olympic programme. The official rules of figure skating are that "ladies" is the correct name of the event, and that is what it was officially called at the Games. Maybe you should have consulted someone from the figure skating community before you arbitrarily decided to attach the wrong terminology to our sport? I wasn't even aware that there was any ongoing discussion on the issue before someone started messing with the figure skating article, and I still haven't been able to find a pointer to the page recording *where* it was discussed. It doesn't matter what constitutes the UK and what the country is made up of. I'm well aware that Northern Ireland is part of the UK. That's completely beside the point though. They call themselves Great Britain in the Olympics. Their official name, as given by their NOC and confirmed by the IOC, is Great Britain. If you guys have a problem with that, you should contact the NOC and suggest they change their name, not fill Wikipedia with erroneous data. I'm changing it back. Please leave it be. Well the sig you show above is not what appeared on my talk page under your RfA thank-you template. That's where the unpaired div showed, causing all following text to align right. I don't see that your current sig has this problem; maybe it's in your private template.

But as long as we're on the subject of sigs: Do you ever look at yours in markup? I count seven full-width edit box lines -- and I have a big monitor. I'm all for expressive sigs, if that's what people like to do; but when I'm inserting a comment in a crowded talk page I sometimes get peeved just trying to sort out editors' sigs from whatever they might have to say. I noticed you have fixed up all the confusing links on the FINA and Swimming World Championships. I wonder if you think it would be worthwhile starting up a WikiProject for Swimming at all, because there a few things which need to be organized, and there MAY be a few regulars around who want to also participate in this. (My swimming related edits are also at User:Blnguyen/AusSport as well as my general userpage). Also I have created Portal:Swimming, and I would like some input into this as my understanding of Swimming is rather Australian-centred (wrt Long Course metres events), so feel free to suggest improvements, or simply jump in and add a more global perspective. Well, my reasoning is simple: the one that's on commons (Olympic flag.png) is going to get deleted from Commons. Perhaps what I should do is upload the one from commons as a 3rd image on Wikipedia, and replace both with that one. Anyways, the AWB doing something wrong is my fault. Well, the one I was working to replace was on Commons, and it had an inappropriate license so it was deleted. However, the one that is being used is on Wikipedia, so it can still be used. Since t's close enough, we can use it for now. While checking recent edits in History, when I click on "diff" or "hist", a pop-up appears to ask me to download some php stuff... however, the downloaded stuff can't be read by my puter. I randomly happened across your note in User_talk:Danny#Asking a favor... and just thought I'd mention that you may need to clear your cache for your monobook.js changes to work properly. Simply shift-click on the refresh button (works in mozilla at least), and that might fix your problem. Shift clicking also seems to fix the problem where links spontaneously become underlined... but that's another story. If the problem you're having is completely unrelated, then don't mind me. I rm'd some content from the Ten Commandments article...content that has been removed several times already today. The additions seem valid but, where this article is constantly used as a soapbox, new lengthy edits such as that one have been cleaned when no citations have been included and/or "Original research" seems previlent(as in this case). I also do not speak German. I have left out the "Hardenne"-part because that is not here name. It is the name of here husband. I know that in some country's a wife's lose there name when the are maried. But not in Belgium. The only way to change your name is my following a special legal procedure. Here legal name is Justine Henin.

If you really like it I am willing to record a new version with Hardenne included. But I would prefer not to do it. The idea of those recordings is so you can hear how a name is pronounced by a native. She is French speaking. I am Dutch speaking. But because I am living in Belgium , Brussels I can pronounce it a lot better then let say an American. I am sure that the current recording has the correct pronunciation. There are 28 talk archive pages for the 2005 season which is too much trouble to search through. All I can say is that I believe this has been discussed before and the general agreement was to leave the image out, because there was not an image on the 2005 page until we got the track map. If you're interested, you can also have a look at Talk:Île-de-France (région) and comment. The same user, ThePromenader, has removed the following sentence from the introduction of the article: "Its territory corresponds for the most part to the metropolitan area of Paris.", and he removed it for about the same rigid reasons that he wants to change the title of List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris. It's very hard to reach any sort of compromise with this guy, and despite being told by both User:Metropolitan and I on the Île-de-France talk page that the sentence should remain in the introduction, he removed it nonetheless. I'm sorry for my strictness, but it's important to remain true to reference here. Paris is unlike many of the world's metropoles, that is to say it is quite administratively separated from its suburbs - this is a real problem for city-suburb relations. All suburban communes have their own administrations, and have often even pride in their quite distinct identity - communes have been around since 1790. These make a large part of the reason that nothing outside Paris is called "Paris" - a situation quite peculiar, I agree, but one you can find in most every reference you look at. You will not find "Courbevoie" under "Paris" - actually, you'll have more chance of finding "La Défense" under "Courbevoie" than "Paris". Since this is supposed to be an encyclopedia, it is important to stick to referenced fact and not rely on greater ignorance - this is the "big deal" with this. Although many theories have been "explained" by certain contributors (Paris is bigger than Paris), nothing has ever been proven in this regard - and there is very good and obvious reason for this.

Just a word of explanation for my stance on this matter, but thanks for your input.

Jared, don't be fooled by ThePromenader here. First let me warn you that the guy is Canadian and has lived in Paris for only about 10 years, and yet he believes he's an authority on Paris. Unfortunately, his many misguided and erroneous edits show his not so good knowledge of Paris. One example: the Paris article, in its Administration section, asserts that (I quote) "Although Paris' history is long, that of its municipal government has less than half a century: Paris and its surrounding territories were always governed directly by the highest power of the time: this was the Crown before the French Revolution, and a state-appointed préfet (governing the Seine département) afterwards." This bit was written by ThePromenader, and it is completely wrong. There existed a municipality of Paris from the 13th century until the French Revolution, but ThePromenader doesn't seem to know that. I already told him to correct that bit, but as you can see it is still standing uncorrected. The fact that people would write erroneous things about subjects that they are not very familiar with is beyond my understanding.

Then, there is the nice slant written above, trying to persuade you that nothing outside of Paris is called Paris, that the City of Paris is strictly separated from its surburbs, and so forth. This is of course for the most part wrong. There exist many metropolitan structures (encompassing the City of Paris and the suburbs) that manage such things as public transportation, fire rescue, or garbage collection. Then there is also the administrative région of Île-de-France whose territory for the most part corresponds to the metro area of Paris and which has all the communes (including the City of Paris) working together for metropolitan projects. Of course, Promenader didn't tell you any of this. I can only suggest again having a look at Talk:Île-de-France (région). Hardouin 19:56, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Aquatics v. Swimming/Schronized Swimming/Waterpolo/Diving

Hey Jonel,

I was recently doing some edits to the 2008 summer page and I was going through the sports when I realized that the only sport that isn't listed is Aquatics, rather, its disciplines are listed. I've noticed this all along but havn't really made anything of it until now. It seems that the 4 disciplines are not grouped together into one page, like Volleyball at the 2004 Summer Olympics (Beach and indoor). Instead, they have their own pages. Why is this? Is this just something that we have just gone along with and never changed? If it has to do with the size of the page, obviously Athletics would be just as big if not bigger. And that's what subpages are for anyway.

So what do you think? I know you've been on the project longer than I have so I figured I'd ask you, the veteran of the Olympic WP pages! I think that they should be merged into one page, [[Aquatics at the ____ Olympics]], so that every sport is consistant. From there, we can have more subpages, but I think that a consistancy would be nice. With a mix, it just doesn't seem right. Anyway, respond when you can. Hey Jared. The mixed treatment of sports and disciplines is essentially a historical relic; it's simply the way things have been done and no one has made the effort to change it. Consistency would be good, but with the wonderful things called "redirects" the page location is not a big priority for me. If you want to undertake changing things, please go ahead. My preference would be to have pages for each discipline (that is, breaking out the two disciplines of "Volleyball" and "Beach volleyball" from the single page) rather than agglomerating. An "Aquatics at the xxxx Summer Olympics" page would be more of a disambiguation page than anything else, pointing to the various pages on disciplines. The same would be true for Canoe/Kayak, Gymnastics, Volleyball, etc. But again, my priorities are 1) people can find what they're looking for; 2) consistency; 3) disciplines rather than sports. #1 is satisfied with the current arrangement, beyond that I care less. -- Jonel | Speak 15:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I definitely think that there should be pages for each discipline, but I think the main pages should be the actual sport that is falls under. So for now, I'll set up the 2008 page so that Aquatics is just a brief "This is what's happening under the sport of aquatics" and just go right into subpages for each. Hi Jared & Jonel, please allow me to offer my opinion here. The definition of a "discipline" is based on the governing sports federation. For example, FINA covers all the aquatics disciplines, so that's why the IOC calls it a single sport. Sometimes, this definition seems weird. For example, FIS governs all the skiing disciplines — but not biathlon. I think most people would consider biathlon and cross-country skiing as closer than alpine skiing and cross-country, yet it is alpine and cross-country that are both part of "one sport". How about the sliding events — the bobsled federation covers skeleton, but luge has it's own federation, so there are actually two sliding "sports" instead of one (or three) as you might expect.

Anyway, my point is that I strongly believe that a "one size fits all" policy of how we handle sports & disciplines on Wikipedia is bound to result in some goofiness. Some disciplines are quite "large" and deserve their own treatment. Some are just 1-2 events, and can be covered together. For example, I see no value in a "Skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics" page as a portal to such diverse disciplines as figure skating and speed skating. Figure skating and speed skating ought to be explicitely identified on the navigation box, and other places where a list of sports is mentioned. That's what people are going to look for, and a pedantically-correct structure within Wikipedia that puts those sports one level beneath the "Skating" heading will be confusing. Similarly, the four aquatics disciplines all should be on the {{EventsAt2008SummerOlympics}}. People are going to look for Swimming, Diving, etc. and I am certain that some will be confused by having to go through Aquatics first.

On the other hand, should it seem like I'm arguing the point about breaking every discipline out to the same level, I think all 4 cycling disciplines can easily be handled by a single Cycling at the 2008 Summer Olympics "portal" to individual events, as should the 3 disciplines of Gymnastics at the 2008 Summer Olympics. I don't want to see the navigation box expanded so that trampoline, BMX cycling, slalom canoeing, beach volleyball etc. are all listed at the same level as the "full" sports.

Note that I'm not suggesting that we delete Aquatics at the 2008 Summer Olympics — it is useful as now written. It makes a perfect spot to explain what "aquatics" is, explain the FINA linkage, etc. I did something similar for Nordic skiing at the 1964 Winter Olympics (for example). But it is a secondary article, so fans of specific sports like ski jumping and cross-country can use their respective navigation structures that we're established.

To summarize — I think we actually got it right for 2004, and I wouldn't revamp that whole structure for 2008. I hope you see my points! Andrwsc 02:35, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your vote, but one thing to note: "Paris" does not signify any "greater Paris area" - to both locals and reference. Textbook definition of a place is important here, as the article is an explicit "list of X in X". Also, you'll find that, contrary to what you said in your vote, no other "list of x in x" article has an incorrect title - objects are either within the space indicated, or have a secondary and quite separate list for notable structures in the vicinity. Were this applied to the "in Paris" article, you would have a "secondary list" that is 70% of the article.

You can refer to Tallest buildings in New York City, List of tallest buildings and structures in London (remember the all-too real administrative "Greater London" is known even officially as "London"), List of tallest buildings in Chicago. If you would like to see "bigger than textbook definition" solutions, I can cite Category:Chicago area expressways and Boston-area streetcar lines. Please reconsider your vote - thanks. There a few problems with {{Navigation}}... firstly, it insists on making the body conmtents "small", which causes accessability problems. (I strongly belive that WP is for evryone, including those with inperfect eyesight. If the small font size was so wonderful, we'd have everything in WP in it... but I digress). Secondly, it has to be full width, which is not needed (the Olympic Games template requires five lines either way, and looks all strung out in tehfull width versio). Thirdly, you can't set the header bar colour... I'm assumeing someone set that for a reason, so I like to be able to keep it.

That said, I really like that five rings/colours bit at the top :-) . I've kept that, but gone back to Tnavbar-header (which is so widely used it canalso be considered standard). Tompw 13:21, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Expecially on large pages like that, editors will typically work on a sport at a time, and it's almost impossible to scroll through the full page results to find the right spot. I've got something that might be workable. (User:Andrwsc/Test) I had to split the template into two parts, one for the pictogram rendering and another for the section wrapper. (We'd probably want to wrap the div/div stuff into a "section end" template too.) That puts the edit button and the hide/show button on different lines. At first glance, not using a single template might look inelegant, but there are some benefits. First, on pages where a nation only has a handful of athletes, we can still use the pictogram header but it would be overkill to use the hide/show sections. Second, it provides an opportunity for some narrative text to appear outside of the hidden results section. This might be good for a casual reader scanning the article without having to hit show/hide on each section. What do you think? Andrwsc 20:22, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I did mention something under controversy. I think a section about bell ringing, including objections to it on the basis of causing severe pain to a large number of people, are an important aspect of the Salvation Army.

On Friday, I was unable to move because of the amount of pain being caused. The person with the bell just laughed at me. They are sadistic. Hi Jared,
Yeah the (relative) success of my panorams is due to decent stitching software - w/o you don't have a chance to get a good panorama. I use Arcsoft Panorama 4 which is a really easy to use program which gives decent results. However for a more advance one (bit more expensive but probably better for advanced users than Arcsoft) Panorama Factory is quite good. Diliff I know relies on PTGUI which I think is quite good but I've never got the hang of - it would be well worth you talking to him as he is far better at panoramic work then me. However a good start to a good panorama is to use a tripod where possible. If not lock your elbows in close to your body and rotate around on your hips. Not having the ability to lock exposure is a bit of a problem, but Panorama Maker usually can blend differently exposed images fairly well (as long as they are not too different). I use a few specific techniques to maximise the quality of panoramas. Firstly, I do use exposure and white balance lock on the individual photos to minimise the differences between frames. Also, a good stitching program is pretty essential (I use a program called PTGui which isn't free, but I've heard that autopano is also good and free, haven't tried it though). Without this, even with the best technique, it will be quite time consuming the results won't be much good. It is still possible to take panoramas without full manual control but you are far more limited in what you can do. Its hard to be more specific though as each scene is different and there are different tricks in different circumstances. Hope that helps, sorry I've taken so long to reply. Why do you have the intention of "pulling out"? Believe me, just exert yourself and you'll be paid off. Don't give in so easily. I have some advice for you. Begin from now:

1. Visit 'admin areas' more frequently: WP:RFAR; WP:CHU; AN; WP:ANI; WP:DRV; WP:AFD; WP:MFD etc. (all the things that they call "admin tools). Try to put your name there as regularly as possible and they will think you are very active and you have penetrated every policy of Wiki (although in fact you may deeply seize the rules without having to appear everywhere).
2. Keep calm (as cool as a cucumber) and select your words thoroughly in each debate (become an admin also means that you are limited in expressing your opinion), or they will delve out a smallest word you had said (which you may have forgotten) to analyze it and conclude that you aren't fitted for adminship (do you understand what I mean?) without regarding all your attempts before.
3. Try to reduce your signature (^_^), or they will make it a fine reason to oppose you.
4. Increase your edit count.

Right now, there are two specific positions I'm looking to fill:

• Features and admins- Compiling all the promoted administrators, articles, pictures, sounds, topics, portals, etc. It sounds like a tough job, but once you get the hang of it, it'll only take 20-30 minutes. See this week's Features and admins for an example of what you'd have to do.

• In the news- This position will take a little more time. It basically means following news stories about Wikipedia, and reporting on them (not just articles that cite Wikipedia, because there are too many of those to get anything useful). See this week's In the news for an example (although I'd really prefer the article to be longer than that, I had to publish a short version this week due to time).

However, what I'd really like most is a couple reporters to just fill in the cracks, reporting on things that don't fit into one of our features (things like Michael Snow's report on Wikipedia traffic from Google, and Sam Blacketer's report on the furor over Wikipedia:Wikipedia is failing). If they're big enough for a full story, they get one; if you can only make a paragraph's worth of copy out of it, you can move it into the News and notes report, which covers all the small stories. Most of these stories can be easily taken by reading Foundation-l and WikiEN-l mailing lists. Also, if I see a story worth covering, I'll leave a note in the newsroom about it, under "special stories". If you do decide that you want to write about a story, just make a note that you'll take care of that particular story.

All stories are due around 17:00 UTC every Monday. If you'd like to take a stab at it, that'd be great; let me know if you have any further questions, or if you need help with your story. I removed {{cquote}} and added the quotes in plaintext; with the graphic on the right side of the screen, cquote often looks weird for multiple quotes. For long quotes, {{quote}} works fine, but plaintext is usually the best. Other than that, I'd say the article's great. If you want to make it easier on yourself, it's not necessary to poll administrators on the issue; if there's any on-wiki discussion that you can crib quotes from, that's perfectly fine with me. Once you have the *.zip file downloaded, extract its contents to your AWB directory (probably C:\Program Files\AutoWikiBrowser if you're using windows). Then copy the two *.dll files from the zip file's ".\Plugins\Kingbotk (WikiProject tagging)" directory to the AWB root directory (C:\Program Files\AutoWikiBrowser). That's all it takes to install.

When you start up AWB, there should be a new "Plugins" drop-down on the top menu bar. It has a list of supported WikiProjects, if you're not tagging for one of the WikiProjects listed, then use "Add Generic Template" to set it up. Once that's done, there will be a tab for your WikiProject on the panel next to the "make list" panel. You set the WikiProject template name and parameters there. Then look at the "Plugin" tab and click "Manually assess" at the bottom to start assessing. Everything else (making the list and whatnot) works the same.

Be sure to save your settings before you quit AWB, so you won't have to set it up again. If you have any problems, just ask at User talk:Kingbotk/Plugin. Happy assessing. - Jwillbur 22:37, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I wasn't sure what you were talking about at first, but I think you mean the thing that I just did to the Olympic Header etc. template. I wasn't thinking that they would be for specific events (that's actually very interesting, though) but I was going to try to use the same templates on Olympic sports, because the pictograms look nice there. I was thinking to try to get it to FA list status, so I would need to fix up the lists first. We'll see how my recent changes go, and if they don't work as planned, I'll change it back. Again, in no way was I suggesting that you'd make all those pictograms! Haha.

Yes, it was on the course of those edits that I posted that message. Of course, I knew you weren't suggesting, it was a joke :P Actually, I came up with that idea when I saw those changes and, even though I could end up being the maker of those hundreds of new pictograms (it's better to keep the design consistency), I wouldn't mind! First, I'd have to do the remaining Winter sports who still don't have one.

My initial idea was to take advantage of the existing sport/discipline pictograms and only add a very specific label on it to relate the image with an event; nothing to much, that would be done instantly. Yeah, my problem was that I didn't want to make those cells so that they would stick out. If they did that, it would make them look "special," like they were more important to the other ones. I tried to make the bullets smaller, but that didn't work. Maybe the combination of small and gray? I'm not sure. If you can think of a way that doesn't stick out and looks good, please tell me. I think you should go ahead. The infobox is nothing more than a summary and thus should not be restricted by the detail level of a specific info on the article body. As you said, most pages might display more info, but others do not (yet), so you probably should move the template subpage, as is (total of athletes). The images would be about the events that occurred during the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. This was for cross country skiing, nordic combined, and ski jumping. I have been working with another user and we both agree that it needs more images than the one it has now in order to get it up to GA or FA status. I hope this helps you out on this. As a follow-up to your e-mail, I managed to find a location on where you can get the Sapporo photos. It is called Nordic Focus, a Swiss-based site with its link being http://www.menzpics.ch/info/indexfisevent.html. Another possiblity of consideration is http://www.eurosport.com where you can click on the Wintersports section and it should give you access to cross country skiing, nordic combined, and ski jumping. The idea would be to chose a irrational number - say "pi" for example. Every day you move along the number, four digits at a time, until you get a number between 1 and c.1300 - that number is the featured article for tomorrow, which gives everyone time to clean it up

You then make a long list in alphabetical order including all the FAs, like this: 1 Abacus 2 Aborigine 3 Animal ..... 1298 Zulu This could be done with the # symbol. So every day, when new FAs are chosen they are added to the list in the proper place. This would continually shuffle the list, so although you could predict the number for a day months in advance - you could never predict the FA that would be in that position. This makes the process entirely transparent and fair.

That is the whole system. But if people want there can be a process for "override" say for the world cup or something, if a lot of users nominated it. If people are nervous that certain subject are over-represented in the FAs - then there can be a simple rule to precluded articles on the same subject being nominated within say a month of each other - but I don't see that as being necessary.

That's a great idea. I'm not understanding you fully as far as the pi thing, but everything else makes a lot of sense. I'm glad you allowed for things such as real world events, so that the process is not totally secluded from the rest of the goings-on in WP. It seems very reasonable, but maybe just a few clarifications as far as the random numbers thing. Maybe have a page with the random numbers already generated on it, so that we don't miss numbers, and highlight as we go. So when I think about it, about 1/3 of the FA have already been chosen - so the list will only have 800 initial entries. Hello, Jared. I removed some language you added to 100-Hour Plan on March 28 saying that none of the measures of the plan have gotten further than passing the House. I am not sure where your information came from but it is well out of date. I'll respond here. I very much like the result. I think it is very consistent with all the other pages of the 2004 Olympics, and is what I think we should strive for as far as all the other pages. Again, good job. It was not something I was planning on doctoring up anytime soon! Thanks. The only thing I'm a little bit hesitant about is that I could not use the full name of each athlete because the bracket would be too wide.
