Please be aware that the character "–" which I used is the same as "–". The "–" clutters up the source code and has no advantage I know of. --Jaellee (talk) 17:30, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hertfordshire Rangers

Hi, DM. Sorry for not replying sooner, have been fairly busy of late. The second link you gave me gives the correct tale - the first link is entirely inaccurate and the third and fourth mix up Hertfordshire Rangers and West Herts, two different entities. I have added what there is in my Watford history book to the article. Cheers, HornetMike (talk) 03:15, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

I shall try my best, and I would like to thank you for helping my with the Kenwyne Jones and Andy Reid Peer Reviews. Thanks.  Sunderland06  12:27, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah the section on the Sunderland A.F.C. page looks great, and i'll be sure to pop by.  Sunderland06  14:20, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
I've just created Thomas Porteous (footballer) it hasn't got much info in. I was hoping that book you have might have some info in it.  Sunderland06  19:03, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Move

Hi! I saw that you moved Edward Wright (footballer) to Dundas Wright. Can you please show me your source, that he was refered as Dundas Wright? Thanks and kind regards Doma-w (talk) 16:52, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks for your answer. Yes, of course, this helps a lot! I have seen, that Edward was not the name he was commonly known. But I was pondering why you did not prefer Gordon? If you prefer Dundas I think it would be good to add some sources, because the two sources now added on his page show him as Gordon, so this does not correspond. By the way, do you have any info (date of birth/death) for the two red links in the 1912 squad of England (Walter Bailey and Samuel Sanders)? And do you have any info if "William Martin" from the same squad is linked to the right William Martin? Kind regards Doma-w (talk) 18:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, now I saw your new mail! Yes, I think I would like to move him to Gordon Wright (footballer). Do you want to do it or should I do it? Kind regards Doma-w (talk) 18:18, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks for all your help! Good to know you as expert for questions like this! :) Kind regards Doma-w (talk) 18:42, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Article titles

There are actually two issues here. One is whether to use the term "footballer" which may be seen as a localized term (which are frowned upon) or "football player" which of course could be confused with American/Canadian football; this being an American-based website, it would be correct to use the term "soccer player" and possibly preferred for this reason. The second issue is in using the year of birth in the title -- just because it's used by a number of articles doesn't make it correct under MoS. But as I say I need to check this out. The fact we have 2 football players with the same name complicates matters. 23skidoo (talk) 12:49, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Fair enough. I've left my response there, but it seems people are more concerned with the semantics of the word football than the reason why I moved the article in the first place, so I'll abandon the issue to others to decide. 23skidoo (talk) 13:56, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Comprehensive long lists‎ discussion

Hello, I noticed that you took part in the recent FLRC for List of Arsenal F.C. players and thought you might be interested in participating in a new discussion. The FLRC was closed as no consensus and it is clear the the issue of incompleteness in longer FLs is not over, so a discussion page has been started here. [edit] RE:Alf Jones

I have looked in the book I use and I only see one Jones in the list. "Jones, WA Born Wednesfield, from Walsall TS, joined 1885, retired 1886, 0 League appearances, 2 FA Cup appearances." Don't think that sheds any light on it though. I would suspect that they are the same person going under a pseudonym? Woody (talk) 19:28, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Nice work. I added a few names of novels, etc., and I imagine that there are more. A number of his books re available on Googlebooks. But I think you've got the most important ones. There is an entry on him at the Dictionary of National Biography, but I don't have access to that. DNB articles generally have a lot of informative info, and if you can get access to it, I think it would give you more info. I enjoyed reading the article. [edit] Gazette

The search page is http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London Because of the way the majority of the pdfs having been created by scanning in the original printed issues, the indexing can be a little hit and miss, so to be reasonably sure you've go tall the entries relating to a given person you relaly need to search on full names, first name, middle initials and surname, all initials and surname, and for those in the military, service number, assuming one of the other searches turns that up. In addition to beign a defintive source for commissions and prmotions of officers of the British armed services, it's the honours lists as published in the Gazette that are the definitive record of peerages, knighthoods, decorations for gallantry and so on. To try and get round the issues with indexing, I've been creating a list at User:David Underdown/Honours which liks to the relevant issues for the New Year and Birthday Honours lists each year (not yet complete), so if you know that someone was appointed OBE or whatever in a certain year, this provides an alternative way of fidning the reference. Perhaps not so relevant for the sorts of articles you appear to do, certain Church of England appointments are also gazetted, as are results of general and by-elections to the UK parliament. Feel free to let me know if you're struggling to find something, adn there are a couple fo subtleties with the template which may not be immediately apparent, but they've done a major revamp of the website at elast once recently, and using the template should allow us to fix references more easily if they do that again. Hi - a stub template or category which you created has been nominated for deletion or renaming at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. They're acceptable in that we use them all the time, even if we can't personally verify them, per WP:AGF. However, I don't mark them as verified because that implies I did personally look it up, which I couldn't do. Just leave it, and if there are any other concerns anyone has, they'll be expressed. [edit] George Brann

I'll take a look tonight. Sorry if I sounded a bit brusque on Winlaw: I just recognised the rather arch and archaic Wisden style, which is reverential to the point of obsequiousness when it comes to old public school cricketers. Without being an expert on it, I reckon that Wisdens from 1935 onwards are probably still in copyright under the "70 years after the death of the author/editor" rule in the UK, where they were first published, so I suppose we have to be careful! You seem to have a nice niche there with your Corinthian footballers. Johnlp (talk) 08:09, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Great work! I don't have much in the way of reference material personally (I really should invest in some good Wednesday books!). Mick Knapton might be able to help out though. Dan1980 (talk ♦ stalk) 07:33, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm working on it now, but before I forget, he made 83 league appearances for Blackpool, not 90. I think the additional seven came from his FA Cup appearances for the club (that is, he made seven FA Cup appearances for the club). - Dudesleeper / Talk 13:22, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
He also played in the number-10 shirt for one game, so it appears he was an attack-minded midfielder if not an out-and-out forward. - Dudesleeper / Talk 20:23, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Thats a nice article, well done. Can't really add much to it. The book "The Men Who Made Sheffield Wednesday Football Club" have his birthplace down as Kirkham, Lancashire which is midway between Preston and Blackpool. The reason he left Wednesday ?: "He was one of a number of players who rejected the new terms offered in 1925". Regards Mick Knapton (talk) 20:21, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Billy Williams (footballer born 1876)

I've added a few bits, but to be honest you've done a really good job with the article and I don't think there's that much more I can add. My WBA Who's Who has a different date of death for the player, so I will start a section on the article talk page to keep track of the date of death as listed in various sources, then if appropriate maybe add a footnote to acknowledge the discrepancy. Matthews' books are normally excellent, reliable sources, but he isn't infallible as I have discovered. --Jameboy (talk) 09:36, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 1895 FA Cup Final

"Villa scored the game's only goal after 39 seconds. Chatt appeared to be the scorer, but after the game, the Villa players confirmed that John Devey had netted after Chatt's shot had been blocked straight into the latter's path and had ricocheted off his knee."Ward, Adam; Griffin, Jeremy. [edit] Michael Keeping

This is probably a hopeless cause but as a Saints fan and part of the cycling project you seem an obvious man to turn to. Here's the query, whilst doing some personal research I found that Frank Keeping (actually called Fred), the silver medal winning cyclist from the 1896 Olympics, went into business in Milford-on-Sea running the "Cyclist's Shop" and later a garage. Now Michael Keeping of Saints and Real Madrid fame's bio reads that he "continued to turn out occasionally for Fulham until 1941 when he returned to Milford to join the family motor business.". I wonder if you have a source that could prove Fred and Mike were father and son? All the Best Topcardi (talk) 09:44, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi DK. I was just wondering if I could ask you for your opinion on the Southampton page. Someone has started a massive overhaul of the history section and while I think done without any malice or anything like that, I'm not convinced it is actually improving the article - quite the opposite in fact. However, I appreciate I may be wrong on this and was wondering if I could get a second opinion, as no-one has really got into the debate on the talk page. [edit] Players honours

Hi DK - I would like to have honours for every single Arsenal player but I'd rather they be comprehensive so that's why I reverted your incomplete edits - either have them all or not at all was my line of thinking. Obviously that will take a bit of time, I'm currently most of my way through my second pass over Arsenal player articles to improve them. On my third one I'll add honours but it might be a few months before they all get done - but they will I promise! Qwghlm (talk) 12:55, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately I have nothing beyond statistical information. He played for City in a period which is not well documented; after the 1926 cup final team, but before the consecutive cup finals of 1933 and 1934. I don't know of any book which would have more information about his time at City. Even for captain Sam Cowan I had to skip from promotion in 1928 straight to the 1933 cup final.
