Homosexual, Heterosexual, Bisexual, Nonheterosexual, and Sexual

Should there be an articles on Sexual X, Homosexual X, Bisexual X, Heterosexual X, and Nonheterosexual X? Disregarding, for the moment, the debate as to whether Homosexual X should be Gay X, Gay sexual X, or Same-gender sexual X, instead see: Terminology.

  • Articles on Sexual X adequately deal with both Heterosexual X and Homosexual X.
  • Except that articles on Sexual X are often simply articles on Heterosexual X, so Homosexual X provides the rest of the story of Sexual X.
  • However, its POV and inaccurate to say X is only Heterosexual X, and Homosexual X does not cover the entire rest of the story of Sexual X as anything outside of the hetero vs homo dichotomy is unwritten (Bisexual X etc).
  • But the articles on Sexual X, Heterosexual X, and Homosexual X often contain redundant information that could more concisely be covered at what may be a stub Sexual X

Proposals

Wikipedia should not have any articles titled Homosexual X, Heterosexual X or their variants

All applicable content may be added to Sexual X.

Wikipedia should include articles title Homosexual X, Heterosexual X, and Sexual X or their appropriate variants

Homosexual X and Heterosexual X complement each other and anything not covered (and possibly applicable to both) may be added to Sexual X. If both Homosexual X and Heterosexual X are brief, their content may be merged into Sexual X until such day as the content requires them to be split.

  • Agreed (providing that bisexual is also a cat., see talk for more) Lestatdelc 15:15, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)
  • Agreed, provided this is for articles that are particularly or specifically or exlusively about homosexual, er, X. Gay bathhouse, for example, is an appropriate title because the content is specific to gay bathhouses, which are very different from non-gay ones. Homosexual sex, on the other hand, is just silly because the most it can ever be is a list or a repetition of the inevitable articles on all forms of non-homosexual sex. Exploding Boy 15:22, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • Comment I concur, that was basically what I was saying in the talk entry about this, that bisexual should also be a category as well, but all such entries for any of these categories should be carefully used (as well as the terminology) within well considered contextual usage so as to not be inaccurately exclusionary by using the wrong term. Lestatdelc 15:45, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • Comment It seems that you are disagreeing, or it may be you're obsessing over a very specific example. See talk. Hyacinth 19:49, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • Agreed. -Seth Mahoney 19:24, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • Belatedly agreed, especially with what User:Exploding Boy wrote. — OwenBlacker 00:07, July 18, 2005 (UTC)
    • Agreed. Although it's difficult for me at least to see where heterosexual X would frequently occur as a separate category from X, I can certainly see the benefit of having separate discussions & articles on Gay, Bi, Les, Trans, & the rest of the rainbow. - Jowfair 6 August 2005

Any such schema proposed above has to take into account bisexuals and bisexuality. Both as behavior, and sexual identity. Rather late at the moment, so will have to think on this before more formed commentary can be made. Lestatdelc 04:48, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)

I would suggest that the proposals also include the bisexual and the contextual usage of "non-heterosexual" when referring to both homosexual (male and female) and bisexual criterion. Lestatdelc 15:26, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)

I realize this discussion and the proposals are biased themselves, but I'm not sure how to discuss choosing terms without reference to what they refer to, and to mention that one must choose a term...Hyacinth 19:53, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

User:Exploding Boy, can you give examples of Homosexual X, unlike Gay sex, that you would be okay with? Hyacinth 19:53, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Gay bathhouse, Gay pride parade, Gay nightclub, among others. Exploding Boy 22:22, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

Regarding terms like Homosexual X and Heterosexual X: Most of the time you seem to be thinking about Gay X and Lesbian X, which is no problem from the point of view I wanted to point out - however, the words homosexual and heterosexual are a bit of a problem when it comes to transgendered people. The moment a transgender person consideres themselves not just "male" or "female", which many do, most other people become "hetero-". Which means that a transman who is in a relationship with a cisgendered man will be in a gay, heterosexual relationship.
I just wanted to mention it now, while not much is being written, will probably save me changing pages later ;-)
Your project seems to be a good idea, BTW, if I weren't so busy on the German WP, I'd probably join. -- AlexR 15:11, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I added the context bar because reading down the main page, it was all in shorthand and jargon. If it's perfectly comprehensible to everyone else, that's great, but aside from clicking over to this discussion, I couldn't understand what issues were under discussion, how they were to be dealt with, etc. - Jowfair

Work in Progress: Guidelines for images in Sexology and Sexuality articles

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 23:40, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Category:BDSM submissives

Apologies for a few cross-posts here, it is hard to guess just where this should go.

Category:BDSM submissives Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_November_24#.5B.5B:Category:BDSM_submissives.5D.5D is currently being discussed for possible deletion because it contains only one article (Bob Flanagan). This drew my attention to several other BDSM-related categories, at least one of which is, well, weirdly populated. Copying some remarks (mine) from the discussion in question:

It is remarkable that this category is so empty when (I just checked, following a guess) Category:Dominatrices has 12 entries and Category:Bondage models has a whopping 76. [Warning, slightly tasteless humor follows.] Just goes to show what the nerdboys writing articles in this subject area are into, I guess. And at a quick look, 100% of the bondage models listed are female. Don't we have any gay nerdboys into leather here at the 'pedia? Practically worthy of WP:CSB.

Anyway, can someone help populate Category:BDSM submissives rather than delete it? And is anyone writing about male bondage models? - Jmabel | Talk 18:10, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Template:WP_Sex

Any comments on renaming Template:WP_Sex to "Template:WP Sexuality" or similar? I have not gotten any replies on its talk page. --Strait 22:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

It sounds okay to me. I didn't do it when I migrated the other stuff as it looked like a big pain in the rear to do that. Do you think it is necessary? Atom 22:56, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, it would help clarify what the project is. There's a big difference between a project that deals with "sex" and one that deals with "sexuality and sexology". I think that it's very tempting right now to start adding this template to pages like Ploidy and Ovipore, which is not what is intended (right?). The big pain in the rear would be to go around to all pages which have the template already and update the template's name. I can do this. Are there anyother complications? --Strait 23:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Updating the articles that have a link would probably be the biggest thing. Fifty pages or so. Atom 02:23, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Ya, that's what I was saying. I can handle it. Shall I go ahead? --Strait 21:55, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

We've given plenty of time for others to say something. I can't see an issue. Go for it. Atom 22:36, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok, done. *whew* Please fix anything I've just screwed up. I tried to be thorough, but my eyes are crossing now. :-) --Strait 05:10, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

What an effort. I appreciate it because I sure was not looking forward to all of that work. Atom 23:09, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:48, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Merging sex position articles

I have recently opened discussions for the merging of leapfrog sex position into doggy style and side entry missionary position as well as butterfly sex position into missionary position. Please comment on the respective talk pages. --Strait 16:44, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Naming of articles, etc.

I frequently find myself in arguments about the naming of sex positions. Generally someone wants to give a position a name I have never heard and use it as though it is the name for that position, even though they cannot provide any evidence that it is generally accepted. (Often the highly dubious "but it has a lot of google hits" defense is used at this point...)

And now there is a huge debate going on about whether or not "handjob" and "fingering" are appropriate words for Wikipedia or whether we ought to say "manual genital stimulation" instead (yuck).

Would anyone be interested in hashing out a guideline on naming conventions in sexuality/sexuality articles which clarifies how Wikipedia:Naming conventions applies to them? --Strait 16:52, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I'd be glad to work with you on that. I am sure we can get a few others involved as it is developed. Atom 18:10, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

"Not-censored" box

I've added the following box to the top of a few articles' talk pages, where (a) no such notice had already been posted and (b) the topic either did or seemed likely to draw requests for censorship. If this would be helpful elsewhere, please use or adapt where you deem it suitable. -- Ben 19:14, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Before complaining about article content, please read: Wikipedia is not censored.

I have now turned the above box into Template:Notcensored.

Also, someone else had created a longer block of text, with a stop-sign, that specifically fits (and is on) the talk pages of articles with images of nudity or sexual anatomy. I've adapted this into Template:Notcensored2, with two minor changes from the original text: 1) removed a blank line from top, 2) used BASEPAGENAME to provide the article name automagically, so that doesn't have to be typed in every time.

It's probably better to "subst" these -- {{subst:notcensored}} or {{subst:notcensored2}} -- rather than make the poor computers transclude them each load. That also reduces the risk of being affected by template vandalism. -- Ben 10:50, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Article classes

I am quickly assigning quality classes to sexuality articles. These are not meant to be the final word, so please change and/or discuss if necessary. --Strait 18:12, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Go for it. I have had that on my list for a long time. Based on past experience, I doubt your classification will be substantially different than my own. Atom 18:43, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

BDSM stubs

I have taken a little time to try and attack some of the stubs floating around. I rewrote Fire play and included a lot of content but it probably needs a bit more to it. Same for Vi Johnson's wiki entry. --User:Rose Ashe 16:25, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

A long standing debate over adolescent sexuality.

See Talk:adolescent sexuality for information on the proposal. It would create a branch off article containing solely views on the subject and hopefully get rid of the POV currently in the articles which are supposed to say what adolescent sexuality is. Not is it good or bad. In my opinion I say let the POV wars take place in an article ABOUT POV. not elsewhere. Tell us what you think at the above link.

This debate has been going on for months. Spanning text being copied into a dozen articles, numerous edit wars. And almost no blocks... Nateland 02:23, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Christian Perspectives on Human Sexuality

I started to work on this article because I came across it by chance early in my pediatric days. I'm not really interested in continuing with it. If no one at the WikiProject Christianity or WikiProject Sexuality is interested in working with it, I will slate it for deletion. Fixer1234 04:19, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Project Banner

I have recently created a banner for Wikipedia:WikiProject Biology which has assessment parameters. I notice that your existing banner does not. Given the amount of overlap in the biology sector, and the concerns expressed elsewhere about the proliferation of project banners, I was wondering whether the members of this project would be interested in perhaps utilizing the Biology banner, with a "drop down tab" for this project, perhaps similar to the {{WPMILHIST}} banner. Doing so would permit for individual assessment for each project, as that is something the Military History banner does, while at the same time reducing the amount of banner "clutter" on talk pages. If you would be interested in such an arrangement, please let me know and I will work to revise the Biology banner to include the "drop-down" tab and make the other arrangements required for your project, as well as theirs, to have assessment data available. Thank you. John Carter 21:04, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Update and request for advice.

Hello all. I would like a some advice on the article glans. When it first came to my attention, it was listed by this group as being a stub of "high" importance. Over the last month, I have spent considerable time expanding the article into a comparative biologically-oriented (rather than completely anthropocentric) article, with references. Although I have sought input on the changes, few were forthcoming. Recently, an individual who apparently vehemently disagrees with my input reverted the article back to the original stub. Thus, I have sought advice from other specific editors, and am seeking advice here. Perhaps the members of this group could provide input on the changes made and recent revert as well, as the exchanges on the talk:glans page. It would be most appreciated. As the article is also relevant to the Biology and Anatomy projects, I will be posting this request to those projects as well. Thanks, and look forward to hearing from you. User:Fl1942 prodding of articles

Fl1942 (talk · contribs) is prodding a lot of articles that are about women's organisations or that are critical of (child) prostitution, women trafficking and rape (National Clearinghouse on Marital and Date Rape, Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, All Bengal Women's Union, Tulasa, and others). Many of these articles are notable, so I have deprodded them. He has taken revenge on me by reverting all my edits (see this edit on Alice Bailey). Can someone else keep a watch on future proddings. --Voidocore 15:22, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Its good to hear that you are working to improve the Wikipedia. Please don't you or anyone else take opposing edits personally: most editors are acting in good faith to also improve ( as they see it ) the Wikipedia. Sexuality related articles are all controversial and most people think there's a bit too much porn-star trivia floating around. I found 3 references from reputable sources to back up facts in the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee article and removed the non-notability tag. Adding references is the best way to secure an article against attack. --Simon Speed 13:15, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Scope

The one thing this project fails to clarify is whether its scope is limited to humans or not. I presume it is, but it doesn't really make it clear whether animal sexuality would be included or not.

Edit: Ah, it says on the banner. I'll add this to the scope section. Richard001 08:12, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Pregnancy, POV, and templates

see talk:pregnancy and Wikipedia:Requested_templates#LGBT_oddities. Basically, it's come to my attention that it's offensive to transmen and so forth to refer to a pregnant person as a woman or "she", but for the sake of sanity, we have to pick a pronoun (can you imagine picking up a book on pregnancy where it says "When one becomes pregnant, one will feel..." or "he or she may experience"? Ick. Messy). Anyway, we're looking for input, and it falls under this wikiproject; I'll also inquire at the LGBT wikiproject, since it's their domain as well. And if someone can make a template, that'd be nice. Kuronue | Talk 13:28, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Talk:BDSM/Translation

I'm the main author of the featured :de article BDSM.
Following the discussion related to the structural problems in this field I continued the translation of the article under Talk:BDSM/Translation. The translation was discussed on the en talk page and started about a year ago. Later it stalled. Some parts are already included in the main en article (e.g. textfragments, movies, most of the images). I guess it was simply to much for 2 persons...

I'm sure that the translation will help to organize this field of topics and might help to evaluate the the importace of some "fan-topics" which are appearing more frequently during the last months. Being a member of :de Project Sexology and sexuality (Redaktion Sexualität) and :de admin I only know to well how difficult it can be to sort out the possible nonsense appearing on this topic.

The :de version of the article was designed in part closely following the :en articles discussion on relevance and structure and therefore has solved 90% of the topics on the article's talk page and archive. While its legal chapters are basically eurocentristic (UK, Austria, Switzerland and Germany) it would take only minor efforts to include US backgrounds once it is translated. The historical and most of the other chapters (about 90%) are "internationalized". Both articles' content is highly interchangeable. While the German one features scientific resources the English one has the Chance to structure a rich field of surrounding articles.

We started translating about a year ago and stopped because progress slowed down.

A request with translations was unsuccessful and I would like to ask you guys if any of you are interested in giving a hand. ;-) I can make my way in English, but as soon as the result needs to be raised to an quasi-scientific level I definitely need native speakers helping to proofread and raise the language level. Is anyone interested in cooperating in this project? I guess this could be good fun and there is a realistic chance to improve the entire field related to this article. Kind Regards. --Nemissimo 21:10, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I've just finished the translation. It would be great if someone could start proofreading it. After the proofreading I will integrate the minor aspects from the old article whitch are not already included and move it.--Nemissimo 15:56, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
The article has been copy edited by native speakers and is nearly ready to be moved.--Nemissimo 15:00, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

sexless marriage - afd?

the [sexless marriage] article appears to have little to say that couldn't be included as a subset of marriage or asexuality. Before anyone gets involved in this edit war, please consider the talk page conversation. Also, edit warrior Student erotica is an single-purpose account, and possibly a sock puppet of User:South Philly.
The main issue editors have with including South Philly's material is student erotica is too small and too recent a genre to add to a broad article like Erotica, especially with details of known publications that User:South Philly/User:Student erotica wished to add — basicly South Philly is reporting on a recent trend (and not apparently a large one) in American college zines. User:Student erotica has been offered alternatives, including creating a stub that would be linked from See also in the Erotica article. But that editor continues edit warring and making spurious accusations.
Histories of the edit war itself can be found on the sock puppet report and the 3RR report. / edg 05:07, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

WP Sexuality: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 10 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. Any help in cleaning up this backlog is appreciated. For further information, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the Notability project page or on my personal talk page. (I'm not watching this page however.) Thanks! --B. Wolterding (talk) 16:55, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

RFC for Gay

Hi, there is a request for comment at Talk:Gay#Request for Comment that could use some more input - most of the contributers so far have already been involved in the dispute, and some outside voices could certainly be used. If you could take a look and comment, it would be appreciated! Aleta Sing 17:10, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

I had a look. The discussion looks like War and Peace. A part seems to be about the definition of the word "potato". Could somebody do a short precis on the nature of the dispute(s) from whatever POV (so long as this is made clear). --Simon Speed (talk) 19:46, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

The verbosity of one particular person is part of the problem. Masculinity is trying to introduce material that purports that the concept of "gay" does not mean the same thing in non-Western/non-Westernized spaces as it does in the West, and parts of the non-West that have been Westernized. He has references to support this contention. Others feel that there are issues of undue weight and POV with what he wants to say, how much he wants to write, and where in the article to put it. (Should it go in the lead section, or only lower down in the article?) As per this RSN thread, there are also questions about the reliability of one of his main sources.
