[edit] Project overview

This project focuses on creating, improving and organizing content related to the subject of astrology in Wikipedia. Our goals include the improvement of articles on historical, technical, philosophical and theoretical issues involving astrology in different cultures and traditions, as well as its relation to other fields. The project will also work on improving the categorization of astrology-related articles.

[edit] Tasks

  • Identify unmarked astrology-related stubs and expand them into full articles. See Articles in need of expansion below.
  • Grab your favorite reference works and identify missing articles on notable astrologers for the list of astrologers, and/or create articles for them.
  • Improve this page and make it more useful for potential astrology editors and project members.
  • Invite active editors who write for astrology-related articles, history of science articles, or other applicable fields to join the project.
  • Add the project templates to astrology articles. See Templates.
  • Identify and create missing astrology articles.
  • Improve and refine existing astrology articles by drawing on reliable primary sources and academic works and citing them as sources.
  • Create a Collaboration of the Month page.
  • Improve the categorization and organization of astrological material.
  • Gather interest and participation in an astrological community within Wikipedia.
  • Maintain the Astrology portal.

  • Astrology articles are categorized pretty poorly overall. I would like to suggest we join together to document existing categories, create new categories as needed, and ensure pages are categorized correctly. — Sam 04:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
  • All the astrology articles I think should be written in a way that they conform to a same pattern in the manner they are written, also the way the info is laid out. Just like in the same way most album articles are written in the same way everytime, so should the zodiac stuff be written the same. A stable format on the way the articles were written will not only help new readers to each article be able to identify where the info is by knowing that they are written the same way, it will also help people like me who go back to the articles to refresh our memories about those signs. The way the articles are currently set up the info is always scattered and in different spots then in the other articles thus making it harder, more confusing, and more time consuming then it should. I plan on starting this venture and I hope someone can help me cause it will not be easy. --Diaboli (talk) 12:57, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Expanding on what Diaboli said, I think all astro-signs should included the basic categories(C) and sub-categories(SC) in this order. An intro(C), "Origins"(C) [as model by the Aquarius (astrology) article], "Mythology"(C), "Symbology"(c) [as model by the Sagittarius (astrology) article], "Associated traits"(C) with a "Characteristics considered positive"(SC,list), a "Characteristics considered negative"(SC,list), an "Attribute"(table), and "Physical traits"(SC) [as model by the Gemini (astrology) article], Compatibilities(C), Correspondences(C) with a "Corresponding Archetypes"(SC,list).

The mythology sections of most of these articles includes the phrase "associated with" referring to, as I put it, "Corresponding Archetypes" rather then actual information about the constellation's mythology or sign mythology. Mythology sections badly need expanding. I strongly suggest the site http://songsdomain.tripod.com/zodiac/, which has great myth sections (ie:The Gemini Myth), be used as a model. [edit] Resources

[edit] Categorization and media

  • Wikipedia: Monitor the broad astrology categories and keep them clean by replacing overly broad categories with more specific ones.
  • Commons: Ensure that astrology related images are properly categorized, especially in relevant subcategories.
  • Wikisource: Upload public domain content related to astrology and ensure that existing content is properly categorized.

[edit] Writing and editing

[edit] Articles in need of copyediting

  • Arabian Parts; a lot has been done already but it is still in need of a fine-tooth combing. Also the name of the article needs to be fixed in accordance to article naming conventions.
  • Electional astrology (NOTE: needs VERY heavy copyediting) - The article needs to be broken up into separate articles on electional astrology in different traditions. Right now it is mainly on Indian electional astrology, and most of this info needs to be in a specific page of its own.
  • Islamic astrology
  • Arab and Persian astrology
  • Astrological symbols
  • Egyptian astrology - article is in very bad shape with a bunch of bogus information. It basically needs a complete rewrite. We may need to enlist others that are more familiar with Egyptian history who are not astrologers.
  • History of astrology - article is in deplorable condition. Needs a massive rewrite.
  • Astrological Ages - the first major edit has been completed. Two additional sub-sections are required - The History of the Astrological Ages and Sub-Periods. Hopefully this will occur ASAP, see discussionn tab for further notes on editing the Astrological Ages.

[edit] Articles in need of expansion and cleanup

Zodiac sign articles are 'gateway' introductory articles for many people into astrology - they aren't looking good at the moment.

[edit] Collaborations

  • I'm new to editing in Wikipedia, so please be gentle on me there. I am a 20-year veteran of the High-Tech industry, a published author for PC Magazine, am currently in the process of writing a book (meaning I have an actual book deal, AND that this is a really long post) and I work as a consultant in the High-Tech industry. I'm an very good editor, an excellent Project Manager and all around considered a (sometimes) funny and (really) nice guy if I do say so myself. I'm a deeply spiritual person with a very practical side. I am neither a Christian nor will I hold it against you if you are. I'm sort of Jewishy-Buddistish and have done literally years worth of reasearch for the book I'm writing which relates to betterment of self through incorporating as much of the body of knowledge that humanity has produced and bringing it to good use for yourself -- this includes Astrology and many other facets of Art, Science, Literature and what I whimsically refer to as 'Common Sense'. I promise you that I am "not" here to take over, nor sabotage the project. Quite the contrary -- I want to be of service to the rest of you who are the true Subject Matter Experts here, and get a team of writers and editors working with you who can take what you write and make it sparkle like the stars that first time you ever saw them -- remember that night? Laying there, looking up at The Stars... did you get the same feeling I did... that i might fall off the Earth? I got really scared the first time my mind for a split second began to hold the very embryonic thought of what "it goes on forever" really meant. I had to shut my eyes. Then my best friend and I laughed and laughed all night. Suddenly our problems didn't seem so BIG anymore... we were these tiny little specs on this tiny little planet in the middle of nowhere! We were so freed by that thought. I don't think I've really gotten my brain back from that day over 30-ish years ago and I'm really glad for it.
  • Enough of my Shenanigans :) ... I very much would like to see this project be more successful than it currently seems to be. If I'm wrong about my assumptions here, please let me know, I'll be more than happy to be incorrect.
  • I "think" I've read the project page well, and I've looked through most of the articles and changes so far. 39 weeks in. How are we doing? I see a lot of edits around this theory or that, a lot of complete re-writes of single subjects, one 'good' page and one 'former good' page. Both of these pages happen to be related directly to Christianity or close.
  • If indeed this project is not dead (it appears there have been a ton of edits done in just this month!) I believe you all may be wanting to contribute more but are a bit unsure of how to go about that. I'm going to step out on a limb here (and again -- please please forgive me if I'm stepping on anyone's toes as that is certainly not the intent) and I'm going to create a Google Group for discussion. Due to the high amount of vandalism of these pages, I've made it a closed group so that it doesn't show up in searches and we won't get spam. If you are a member of the WikiProject and would like to be added to the General discussion group so we can all discuss where we are, possibly taking a step or two back, looking at the big picture and determining next steps, let me know by sending one of those new-fangled messages to 'theotherrob' (then little symbol that's the glyph for the 2nd and 3rd letters of "Tattoo"), a period and the first three letters of 'common' (sorry I know that's strange, its to keep spam away -- when posting to public pages like this its a great idea unless you like SPAM.
  • If I've already made you mad feel free to say so -- I hope I can provide some assistance in overall guidance, focus and at the end of the day successful wonderful magical completion of this labor of love -- and help all you smarties get your work recognized!

ARGH! forgot to sign!! Yours Humbly, Rob (talk) 10:51, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
