WCTI Channel 12 is the ABC affiliate serving the Greenville/Washington/New Bern, North Carolina television market in the northeastern part of the state. It is licensed to New Bern, with studios on Glenburnie Street in downtown New Bern and transmitter near Trenton, North Carolina.
The license had been granted in 1954, but sign-on had been delayed almost a decade. This was largely because the military was concerned that the tower's height would interfere with the operations of the numerous military installations located in eastern North Carolina. Also, WRVA-TV in Richmond, Virginia (now WWBT) was concerned about possible short-spacing. All objections were eventually overcome, and the station took to the air on September 7, 1963 as WNBE-TV. It became WCTI in 1970.
The station has been an ABC affiliate since its inception. When it signed on, the Greenville/Washington/New Bern market became one of the smallest markets in the country with three commercial network affiliates.
In 1980, WCTI erected a 2,000 foot (610 meter) tower located near Trenton to allow greater coverage throughout Eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks and part of Raleigh. The station's original tower, located at the New Bern studios, is still in use as a backup.
In 2007, Newport License Holdings, a part of Bluestone Television, was sold along with the latter to Bonten Media Group. WCTI 12 is available on satellite thru Directv and Dish Network. WCTI was the 1st over the air digital station in the Greenville NC market.

In addition to ABC, WCTI also carries ENC-TV, programming on digital subchannel 12.3. ENC-TV airs first-run syndicated programming, as well as local news and sports. Prior to September 18, 2006, the subchannel was UPN-48, broadcasting programming from the defunct UPN.
When UPN and The WB merged into The CW on September 4, 2006, WNCT-TV chose to carry The CW on one of its digital subchannels. When News Corporation started up another new network called My Network TV, it seemed likely that either 12.3 or cable-only WB affiliate WGWB would affiliate with My Network TV, but that affiliation went to local ION affiliates WPXU and WEPX.
When the station was called UPN 48, it was carried on DirecTV channel 13, and also on basic analog cable through Suddenlink. When the station changed to ENC-TV, DirecTV dropped the channel and replaced it with Baltimore station WNUV briefly until it added WNCT-DT2 in its place on channel 15.
Suddenlink later moved ENC-TV to a digital channel and put C-SPAN 2 in its analog slot. Attempts have been made to get it back on DirecTV and basic cable with little success. The channel is available on Dish Network channel 48.
