The Thousand Sunny (サウザンドサニー号 Sauzando Sanī-gō?), which Franky intended to be named the "New Battle Franky, "The Lion Gang Champion""[1], is a brigantine-rigged sloop-of-war (brig sloop) used by the Straw Hat Pirates in the anime and manga One Piece; from manga chapter 436 to present and anime episode 321 to present. The name Thousand Sunny was proposed by Iceburg and adopted by the Straw Hats, despite Franky's objection.

[edit] History
After the events at Enies Lobby, Franky felt morally obligated to repay the Straw Hat Pirates for their trouble and also for stealing their 200 million Belli. With the assistance of Iceburg and the Galley-La foremen, Franky built a new ship from the wood of the Treasure Tree Adam, the same wood that the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger's ship, Oro Jackson, was built from. Aside from assisting the Straw Hats, Franky built this "Dream Ship" to fulfill his dream to build a ship that would travel the world and reach the end of the Grand Line. Iceburg stated that since Luffy's dream is to become the Pirate King, then he should sail on the Thousand Sunny, which carries a lion motif as the "King of the Beasts." [2] The name comes from the idea that the ship will cross over a thousand seas like the sun, and was suggested by Iceburg.
Franky stated that the Thousand Sunny will carry on/inherit the Going Merry's spirit and even has a mini-Merry supply ship designed to carry four people.
Shortly after its unveiling, Garp attacked the ship, which was able to escape by the use of the Coup de Burst installed by Franky. Afterwards, the crew sailed into the Florian Triangle and met Brook whose ghost ship became caught in the Thriller Bark along with the Thousand Sunny. When the Sunny is trapped by a giant spider web, the crew settles on exploring an island, during which time the ship is searched by Perona and several zombies.
[edit] Recent Chapters
Recently, the crew has made contact, and dealt with Duval, a mysterious man, and are soon to be arriving at fishman island after having the Thousand Sunny coated with a layer of special resin.
[edit] Features
[edit] Layout
The ship's main construction material is the wood of the near-indestructible tree Adam. The same material was used to build Gol D. Rogers ship, the Oro Jackson. The Figurehead resembles a lion with crossbones below it. (This is often mistaken for a sun by people other than Franky, which begat the name of the ship.) Accompanying the lion's head are a paw on either side that double as anchors similar to those of the Sexy Foxy used by Foxy the Silver Fox.
The ship has two masts with a closed and windowed crow's nest residing on top of the foremast. The deck below the foremast is carpeted with lawn and features a few trees as well as a swing and a slide. The deck below the main mast and on top of the kitchen has a garden on it. The back of the ship also includes a balcony.
[edit] Facilities
Besides separated quarters for male and female crew, the Thousand Sunny encompasses a few luxury rooms such as a bathing house and a library. The crow's nest doubles as a gym. Franky and Usopp both have specialized rooms for making inventions or developing weapons. A sick bay for medical care is also present.
The kitchen features a big stove and a lockable refrigerator. It doubles as the main dining room with a large table and a sofa and also includes a Den Den Mushi. Adjacent to the kitchen is a pantry for unprocessed food. Located directly below the kitchen is the aquarium bar, which is a large semi-circular room with a sofa wrapping around it. The back of the room has a large aquarium which doubles as a fish tank to store living seafood. The kitchen and bar are both pierced by the main mast which has a food elevator built into it.
[edit] Armaments
The only known weaponry so far is a normal cannon Usopp has been shown using once and the special cannon embedded in the lion figurehead[3], "The Gaon Cannon" , it uses 5 barrels of cola, therefore Franky warned that they can't use it that many times. The lion figurehead is also able to allow the ship to move backwards. However, layout sketches of the ship also showed cannons on the side of both female and male living quarters (which are located on top of each other) and a cannon near the aquarium bar[4].
[edit] Soldier Dock System
An invention of Franky's that involves a rotating wheel with six compartments, which is mounted in the center of the ship horizontally. Each individual compartment has its own door, allowing deployment of whatever that is within the compartments. There are five different channels for the Soldier dock system: 1, 2, 3, 4 and two 0's. The channel can be chosen with a lever embedded into the steering wheel.
- Channel 0: Contains two large cola-powered paddle wheels within two opposite compartments that extend out to propel the ship while the sails are tied up; In this configuration, the ship is called 'Paddle Ship Sunny'.
- Channel 1: Contains a one-person Waver, Shiromokuba I. When the Thousand Sunny's doors are closed, they display Channel 1, possibly in homage to Dock 1 of the Galley-La Company.
- Channel 2: Contains a supply ship, the Mini-Merry II, a four-seat paddle steamer that resembles the Going Merry.
- Channel 3: Contains a 3-person scout submersible, the Shark Submerge III. Maximum depth of 5000 meters.
- Channel 4: Shown to contain a pool where Usopp and Chopper (aided by a floatie) swim when the ship is stopped. Franky plans to place a weapon in there when he finds a good one.
[edit] "Coup de Burst"
A huge cannon on the stern, similar to Franky's "Coup de Vent", that can launch the ship over a kilometer through the air fueled by 3 barrels of cola. The "Coup de Burst" cannon is also used to stabilize the ship when firing the Gaon Cannon.
[edit] Video Game Appearances
The Thousand Sunny is the Straw Hats ship in One Piece: Unlimited Adventure for the Wii. In the game the Straw Hats get separated from their ship after Luffy finds a mysterious Orb which cause an island to rise out of the sea causing a tidal wave that throws the ship onto the island. The ship however lands safely on the inland in the "Autumn Colored Ruins" area. After the Straw Hats defeat Enel (an illusion of Enel the serves that area's Boss), the Straw Hats move the Thousand Sunny and dock it near the base camp they set up on the island.
The Thousand Sunny wil also be featured in One Piece: Unlimited Cruise for the Wii. Unlike the the previous game however, you actually get to explore the entire ship. In the tankōbon version of One Piece manga, Oda drew detailed interior design for Thousand Sunny including each piece of furniture and passage ways. From the current preview it seems Unlimited Cruise kept Oda's design down to exact detail down to the patterns on the walls and furnitures.
