[edit] Den Den Mushi
Called a Transponder Snail Phone in the English dub. These are the odd "phone snails" that are used throughout the series. They come in a variety of colors and shapes and have multiple functions. The snails act as a number of devices including: rotary phones, fax machines, and cellular wrist watch devices. It's unknown how the Den Den Mushi are able to communicate with one another over such great distances. When they are used, the snails speak in sync with the caller's voice, as well as sometimes imitating the facial expressions of the caller. Other Den Den Mushi resemble the caller, by adding hair, or something else.
According to Eiichiro Oda, Den Den Mushi have the ability to communicate with one another using radio (thought) waves, an ability harnessed by people attaching buttons and receivers to them so they can transmit voice messages between specific snails. Thus, a Den Den Mushi is not harmed if its receiver is damaged or destroyed. Due to Humans breeding them for usage, the Den Den Mushi species as a whole receives a large benefit in return. When not in use, the Den Den Mushi are usually inert, either sleeping or in a dazed state. Other types of Den Den Mushi include:[1]
- Kuro Den Den Mushi
- A (Black) Den Den Mushi, is used by the Navy as a wiretap to intercept calls between pirates or other miscreants.
- Baby Den Den Mushi
- The Baby Den Den mushi is fairly small and portable, but incapable of international calls.
- Golden Den Den Mushi
- This Den Den Mushi is a special kind that is used to summon the Buster Call.
- Silver Den Den Mushi
- The Silver Den Den Mushi is used as an alarm to alert the Navy to the Golden Den Den Mushi's Buster Call request. It is the largest snail phone, and does not seem able to transmit speech. It is depicted as old and bearded.
[edit] Sea King
Sea Kings are mythical sea creatures in the anime and manga One Piece (or Neptunians in the English Anime and Manga), which are generally much larger than normal sea creatures. They are found in great numbers along the Calm Belt around the Grand Line, although in rare occasions they can be found in other places throughout the world.
Sea Kings make trade and travel difficult for anyone trying to cross the water where they are found. Cases have arisen where some islands in the Grand Line close to the edge of the Calm belt have ended up getting almost completely cut off from the rest of the world. In Water 7 and its surrounding islands, this led to the eventual creation of the Sea Train as a means to travel safely to and from each of its surrounding islands.
Sea Kings are serpent-like in appearance. However, they vary from one Sea King to another in exact appearance along with their size. Only the strongest of ships or captains can take on a Sea King. Most other creatures in the ocean fear the Sea King and confrontation with one by all but a few humans is inadvisable. Many characters such as Franky see the act of killing one a sign of strength and achievement.
It is revealed that Sea-stone can be used to mask the presence of a ship, allowing it to travel through calm belt.
The Sea King that ate Shanks' arm is known as The Lord of the Coast.
The Sea King that terrorized Longring Longland was known as the Master of Waters.

So far four sharks have been shown in One Piece. They are the panda shark that Yosaku took back to Baratie at the end of the Baratie arc, the skyshark who are extremely carnivorous and will eat anything, even their own kind, the starshark Monda of the Foxy's pirate crew who participated in the Davy Back Fight, and an unnamed horn shark that Luffy and Usopp caught, and put in a fish tank which had fish until the shark ate them.

[edit] Blue-Finned Elephant Tuna
("Titanic Tuna" in the 4Kids English dub): A fish native to the South Blue, with elephantine features and an approximate length of 2.5 meters. Chefs consider it a miracle ingredient and call it "the jewel of the sea." In the manga, Sanji purchases one in Loguetown. In the anime, he beats four chefs to win the beast as a prize in a cooking contest.

The island which Gaimon lives on has varies types of animals all of which are hybrids. These include,

[edit] Island Whales
The largest whale species in the One Piece world. They come from the West Blue. They normally swim together with other Island Whales in pods (just like real life whales) but may adopt another family (E.g. Laboon adopted a pirate ship as his pod) and swim with them.

A species of Dolphin that is larger than most ships. The Straw hats encountered one as they approached little garden.
[edit] Dinosaurs
Apparently, due to the unpredictable weather patterns of the Grand Line, dinosaurs were able to survive and live on the island of Little Garden, which is hot and humid enough for the dinosaurs to live in. The dinosaurs range from Tyrannosaurus's to Apatosauruses. Dorry and Broggy usually hunt the dinosaurs as a source of food. Also during their stay Zoro and Sanji killed dinosaurs as a competition.

Big tigers with long fangs. these animals are shown to inhabit Little Garden and the Straw Hats witnessed one being killed by a dinosaur and Sanji riding one {after beating it up} to search and find Nami and Nefertari Vivi.
[edit] Giant Goldfish
Giant Goldfish is an enormous fish that haunts the sea around of Little Garden. It's known as "Island Eater" and its feces are so big that they are known as "Nothing Island". This is another of Usopp's lies becoming true. This fish ate Going Merry, when Straw Hats were leaving Little Garden, but was killed by Dorry & Broggy, with their strongest attack, Hakoku Sovereignty, saving their friends' lives.

A type of tick that inhabits hot, humid jungles and carries bacteria in its bite. Once bitten an infection forms and after 5 days the infection begins to spread, causing the victim to experience intense pain. During this time, the victim’s temperature rises up to 40°c causing Myocarditis, Arteritis and Encephalitis. After the full 5 days of infection, the patient apparently dies. It takes 10 days after treatment to recover from the disease. While the Straw Hat Pirates were on Little Garden, Nami is bitten by a Kestia causing her to become sick. Kestia was supposed to have become extinct 100 years ago, but it survived on Little Garden because of its prehistoric setting. In the 4Kids dub the whole visit to Little Garden was removed, but oddly 4Kids kept the part about the Kestia or "Stingy-Dingy Bug".

A giant white bear from Drum Island known as a mountain climber. The usual manner in dealing with one is just to bow to it as a respectable mountain climber and leave it be.

Big, white, carnivorous snow rabbits from Drum Island. They are the most vicious species of animal on Drum Island, however Luffy becomes friends with them after saving the dad of a young Lapahn who was buried in the snow. Recently Doctor Kureha also tamed them and is shown riding one. Their name is a reference to the French word for rabbit - 'lapin,' which, incidentally, is what they are called in the English translation of the manga.

Tony Tony Chopper himself is one. They are described as usually having red noses like Rudolf.
[edit] White Walky
More commonly known as "Hairy Hippos," these are as their second name implies, a species of hippopotamus covered in long fur. These have adapted to the environment of Drum Island to the point that they have become lethargic in nature. Though they appear to be short, the legs of the White Walky are actually rather long when not tucked under its fur, allowing it to move faster than it could were its legs tucked in. However, having them tucked in gives it remarkable ability for climbing vertical slopes. Wapol was able to scale the tallest peak of the Drum Rockies to get to his castle with ease by riding on the back of his pet White Walky, Robson.
It seems to be something of a national animal of Drum Kingdom, as the Kingdom's throne has a top resembling a white walky's head. However, this may just be because Wapol likes the style (his ship's figurehead is also a white walky, and he wears a walky hide as a cloak).

(Bananagator in English versions): A giant crocodile with a banana-shaped growth on its head. These are so fierce that they are said to even prey on Sea Kings. However, Sir Crocodile seems to be able to control them, as one is often seen in the same room as himself and Miss All Sunday without making any attempt to attack either one of them. Luffy calls them bananas with crocodiles attached to them and Usopp argues with him that they are crocodiles with bananas attached to their head.
[edit] Kung-Fu Dugongs
Called a Kung-Fu Jugon in the English dub. A type of Dugong living in Alabasta that is famous for their martial arts skills and strength. Their code of honor states that once they are defeated, a dugong must become the follower of the one who defeated them. Their code extends to any 'disciples' their master may have with him as well. Currently, their master is Luffy as he unwittingly defeated them all.
[edit] Desert Strawberry
A poisonous spider indigenous to the deserts of Alabasta that bears a strong resemblance to a strawberry. Some desert travelers will come across this spider and, if they're hungry enough, will eat it, mistaking it for an actual strawberry. Upon eating it, the traveler will then become poisoned and then die within a few hours. Upon death the body will then release further toxins poisoning anyone around them. The corpse of a suspected victim of the Desert Strawberry are to be approached with extreme caution. It was never seen by the Straw Hats, only being mentioned by people in Nanohana who thought Ace had eaten one.
[edit] Moving Crab
A giant crab found in the deserts of Alabasta. Unlike normal crabs, they hate water, and are dry land creatures. "Scissors" (Pincers in the 4Kids dub) was the only moving crab shown, and helped the Straw Hat Pirates move from Rainbase to Alubarna.
[edit] Sandora Catfish
A giant catfish found in the Sandora river in Alabasta. It is normally rarely seen. Its favorite food is people.
[edit] Sandora Lizard
A giant purple lizard that hides underground waiting for a prey. In the anime, they hunt in pairs. They are called Sandora Dragons in the 4kids dub.

(Cat shark in the 4kids dub): A strange fish living around Alabasta, it is sacred (endangered in the 4kids dub) to the people in Alabasta and killing one is forbidden.
[edit] Super Spot-bill
A type of duck that has web-less feet and comes from Alabasta. They are incredibly fast runners, reaching speeds faster than a leopard, and can even run straight up walls. Karoo is an example of this species.
[edit] Warusagi Birds
Birds that trick anyone traveling through the desert and rob them by lying around as though they're seriously ill, then stealing any belongings the travelers may drop when they run to find help for them. Called bilker herons in the dub. Their name is a pun on the Japanese word "Sagi" which means either Heron or Swindler.

[edit] South Bird
The Southbird is a bird found south of the forest in Jaya and also on Skypiea that most resembles a Toucan. A Southbird has a distinctive call and has been used on ships since ancient times to help sailors navigate through the waters of the Grandline. These strange looking birds have a freak habit of always pointing their head south, no matter where they are (much to the amusement of Luffy). In fact they find it most uncomfortable to point in any other direction. They have a loud call that can control bugs.
Note that in the Grand Line normal compasses don't work because of the strange magnetic fields, so it's unknown how the South Bird always points to the south. It's most likely they living so much time in Jaya they can only point to the south of Jaya, and in any other island they would be able to point to the south.
[edit] Hercules Beetles
Beetles found in the jungles of Jaya. Luffy finds one while there, looking for a south bird, and claims he's a god. The beetle is based on the actual Hercules beetle.
[edit] Giant Praying Mantis
A species of enormous praying mantis found in the jungles of Jaya. These are very aggressive and will not hesitate to attack a person. Their forelimbs resemble scythes and are capable of cutting wood.

Probably the least expected animal to be seen in a forest. The pigs of Jaya Island's jungle seem to in types of packs for protection.

The island of Jaya's insects consist of:

There are many creatures around the Sky islands, however, most are not named in neither the Manga nor the anime.
[edit] Balloon Octopus
A species of giant octopus found in the White Sea. These have evolved to where their bodies are full of air like balloons to survive in the sky without falling down to the Blue Sea. It's unknown if a balloon octopus that falls down to the Blue Sea can ever return to Skypiea.
[edit] Cloud Fox
A small white fox creature found in Skypiea with a long snout. Suu is the name of cloud fox owned by Conis.
[edit] Giant Python
Giant pythons were originally found (extremely rarely) on Jaya 400 years ago, where they were worshiped as gods by the Shandians. However, the last one (Nora) was launched into Skypiea along with the rest of the land that would become Upper Yard. Giant pythons possess highly corrosive venom and are typically very aggressive, not hesitating to attack humans and devour them. They also seem to have fur covering the undersides of their bodies.

A fish that evolved to become flat so it could live in the clouds of the White Sea. Some of them grow very large.
[edit] Sky Lamprey
A gigantic lamprey that is three times the length of a human and is found in the rivers of Upper Yard. This species tried to devour Luffy, Sanji, and Usopp, but was easily defeated by Luffy.
[edit] Sky Shark
A strange-looking shark that inhabits the areas around Upper Yard. They are vicious, attacking anything they can reach without hesitation and will even devour other Sky Sharks that have been wounded.

The Southbird on Jaya are the same on Skypiea except the ones on Skypiea are much larger and a little friendlier than the ones on Jaya. They seem to like meals prepared by humans very much and Roronoa Zoro had to put up a fight to keep one from stealing his lunch.
[edit] Speedy shrimp
A creature from the White sea, a shrimp that is incredibly fast. It is large enough to move small ships at great speeds. Known as the "Express Lobster" in the English dub.

A faster, larger version of the Speedy Shrimp, it's a special species of the White-white sea.
[edit] Sky Crocodile
A species of brown crocodile found in the cloud rivers of Upper Yard with a finned tail. One of these attempted to attack Nami but was easily dispatched by Zoro and Robin.

A species of white-furred wolf found in Upper Yard. Like most wolves, they travel in packs and are territorial. However, unlike most wolves they seem to possess an almost human degree of intelligence. They can walk (or even dance) on their hind legs, pick up and hold things with their front paws, respect human strength, and can even make juice.

Note: All the animals on the island are simply regular animals but with extended parts. Their names are also longer versions.

Probably the longest animal on the island. The one shown in the series was very obedient, doing the generic dog tricks (sit, lay down, etc.) but it is unknown whether or not all daaaaaaaachshunds are like this.

A horse with an extremely long neck and is known to be used frequently by the island's nomadic tribe as a beast of burden. Tonjit owns one named Sherry.

A snow leopard with a wide face and mouth. This allows it to take big bites. It is another animal that has been stretched by the effects of Long Ring Long Land.

A large mole that has a constructor's helmet to see in the dark. They are apparently able to dig long distances. Tonjit's grandson owns one. (Anime only.)

A Duuuuuuuuuck is a regular Duck with an extended neck, bill, and wings.

These are three types of sea-horse bulls.

Sea horse-like creatures used to navigate the canals of Water 7. Used for every day travel, sightseeing and carrying light cargo from one part of Water 7 to another. It costs 2,000 Beli to rent a Yagara Bull.

A larger size class of the Yagara Bull.
[edit] King Bulls
Giant versions of Yagara Bulls, they are used for carrying heavy or large loads. Sodom and Gomorrah, two King Bulls owned by the Franky family, are examples of this species.

[edit] Flying Fish
A breed of fish in the area around Fishman Island and Shadondy Island. When these fish exit the water they become airborn for 5 minutes. They are captured and used like motorbikes by the Flying Fish Riders.

- Sea Cow - (Possibly found in the waters around the Fish-Man island) A fish which loosely resembles a cow. Arlong brought the sea cow Mohmoo with him from the Grand Line. Although resembling cows, they are carnivorous.
